As a singer and songwriter, Nissi blends Afrobeats, funk, and soul with uplifting lyrics. In 2023, she released “Nobody,” featuring Fireboy DML, an infectious pop masterpiece that fuses R&B and Afrobeats into a rich, melodic experience.

Beyond her artistry, Nissi was part of the elite team that designed the Bentley Bentayga SUV,  a milestone that made her one of the few Black women to contribute to such a high-profile automotive project.

Her work shows that her talent transcends music, bridging art, science, and engineering in a way that highlights the limitless potential of African women.

“Being part of the EQUAL programme means being a part of a movement that’s levelling the playing field for women, and I am beyond honoured to be a part of championing this campaign that amplifies our voices,” Nissi shared.

Since its launch, Spotify’s EQUAL Africa initiative continues to amplify the voices of women across the continent, providing them with the platform, visibility and resources they need to tell their stories and connect with audiences worldwide.

We sat down with Nissi to learn more about her and her music.

What is that one surprising thing your fans might not know about you?

It might be that I LOVE cool gadgets (anything from cars to games) and I’m obsessed with popcorn.

When did you realise that making music was in your destiny and what is your WHY for pursuing this craft?

Music has been a part of my life since I was five years old, playing the keyboard in music school. I knew it was a part of my destiny when I made my first demo at 13. Not only that I made it but when I played it, it moved people in the room to tears. My WHY is that I am truly in love with the creation and performance of music and connecting with people through that musical storytelling.

Which African songs or artists did you grow up listening to?

Loads. Fela Kuti, Brenda Fassie, Miriam Makeba, Nneka, Asa, Daddy Shoki, Awilo Longomba, Fatai Rolling Dollar, Victor Uwaifo etc. The list goes on and on.

To someone who has never heard your music, how would you describe the sound, tone, and style?

I think I have a lot of depth in my tone; my sound almost feels nostalgic while being modern, no matter what genre I’m on. My style is extremely versatile; I feel like I can make any kind of music, but do it my way.

Any advice for someone dreading following their dreams?

Keep doing you, no matter what.

How do you navigate the music space as a woman artist and how does your unique perspective shape your artistry?

Most industries are not easy on women; you have to own every space and fight for the things you’re passionate about. My perspective allows me to always see that there’s nothing I can’t achieve, so I just go for it, and I hope that someday people recognise all the things that I am.

All my life, I’ve been in male-dominated industries,, and my ethos has always been to keep putting in the work, being your best, and that no one can do it the way that you do.

Here is the full list of nominees for the 2023 Trace Awards, which includes Afrobeats artists Davido, Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Tiwa Savage among other noteworthy musicians.

The first-ever Trace Awards will be held at the BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda, on October 21, 2023, and the nominees were announced by the music media company Trace on Monday.

The live event and international TV extravaganza, which will honour the originality, talent, and influence of music and culture with African and Afro-inspired influences, is scheduled to be televised live to some 500 million viewers in 190 countries.

Among those vying for the awards are artists, music producers, DJs, writers, composers, directors, and record labels.

Leading the nominees are West African artists, particularly Nigerian musicians, who dominate the Afrobeats scene with more than 40 nominations in total – including multiple nomination categories for Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, Davido, WizKid, Tiwa Savage, Yemi Alade, Fireboy DML and Rema.

Davido and Burna Boy bagged four nominations each in categories such as ‘Best Male’, ‘Song of the Year’, ‘Best Live’, ‘Best Collaboration’, ‘Best Artist’, and ‘Album of the Year’.

The music stars were followed by Asake, Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, Ayra Starr, Yemi Alade, and Fireboy DML, who grabbed three nominations each, while Rema and Kizz Daniel earned two nods each.

Odumodublvck, Oxlade, The Compozers, Moses Bliss, DJ Spinall, Olamide, BNXN, Show Dem Camp, and Nissi are among the other noteworthy Nigerians on the list.

Speaking about the awards, Trace chairman and co-founder Olivier Laouchez said: “The Trace Awards’ nominations salute achievement and excellence from more than 150 performers, producers, DJs, writers, composers, directors, established artists and rising stars, and their management and labels. We congratulate all the nominees, most of whom will attend and perform in Kigali on 21 October. It will be an unmissable experience for lovers of African and Afro-inspired music.”

Platinum-selling musicians from more than 30 nations in Africa, South America, the Caribbean, the Indian Ocean, and Europe are vying for awards in 22 different categories. Renowned Congolese artist and designer Dora Prevost created the winners’ trophy.

Along with nominees from the continent, the various music of the African diasporas is also represented by well-regarded artists from France, Brazil, the UK, the Caribbean, and the Indian Ocean, such as Shenseea from Jamaica, Stormzy from the UK, Aya Nakamura from France, and Leo Santana from Brazil.

Nissi, Burna Boy’s sister, has reacted to Davido’s recent description of Burna Boy as a “new cat” in an interview.

Following Davido’s recent interview with Brut Afrique, in which he described how afrobeats became a worldwide phenomenon in the world of music today, Nissi, Burna Boy’s sister, has turned to social media to respond to the comments made by the 30 BG CEO in the interview.

In the interview, Davido said that he and Wizkid developed the worldwide afrobeats wave. He continued by saying that the ‘new cats’, like Burna Boy, Rema, Asake, and many more, have advanced the wave to a higher level.

“Everybody knows that I was one of the first, me and Wizkid to blow up. It feels good also seeing that the news cats coming up; like Burna Boy, Rema, Fireboy, Rema, Asake, and Mayorkun,” he said.

This sparked discussion about Burna’s classification as a “new cat” on social media.

The sister of Burna Boy, Nissi, shared a video of her brother performing in front of over 80,000 fans at the London Stadium on her Instagram page as one of many people who replied to Davido’s remark.

Nigerian singer and founder of Creele Animation Studios, Nissi Ogulu, popularly known as Nissi, has revealed why she joined her brother Burna Boy’s record label.

The singer, says she at first didn’t want to be a part of Spaceship Records, the record label owned by Burna Boy, her brother.

In a recent interview with Chude Jideonwo, the 29-year-old singer said she at first didn’t want to work with Burna Boy’s record label Spaceship Records but later realized that creating a legacy with her family is “priceless.”

While insisting that there’s no perfect label, Nissi explained that having people who believe in you and are ready to fully support and understand your vision is priceless.

She said: “I think for me at that time, it was a good decision. You have to always weigh the pros and cons and select what you think is best for you,” 

“There’s no label that is perfect but having people who believe in and are ready to fully support you, understand your vision, where you’re going and draw a plan that you can align with is priceless.

“You can rest easy. You trust the people around you and at the same time, you are building a legacy.

“At some point, I didn’t want to be a part of the label, then I thought to myself why not try something different?

“You’re running away from your blood, these are the people you love the most in the world and no one else will have your back as much as your family.

“So how do we make it work in a way that can help us all shine in the way that we deserve but also help us build something together? It has never been a competition and it will never be.”

In 2015, Burna Boy establish Spaceship Records. The Grammy-winning star and Nissi are signed to the label.

The label also houses producers LeriQ and Telz. BNXN was also formerly signed to the label.

In 2020, Nissi dropped her EP titled ‘IGNITE’.

She followed it up with singles like ‘Hold’ in 2021; ‘Gravity’ and ‘Overthinking’ in 2022.
