The Premier League Golden Glove has officially been awarded to David de Gea for the second time in his Manchester United career.

Despite the team’s ups and downs during the 2022–23 season, Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez have helped Man Utd to typically remain strong in the defence.

The two, together with De Gea’s improved goalkeeping abilities, have allowed the Man Utd starter to accumulate 16 league shutouts.

No goalkeeper can now pass De Gea in the race for the Golden Glove after the Spaniard recorded his 16th clean sheet in Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Wolves at Old Trafford.

Alisson Becker, Nick Pope, and Aaron Ramsdale still have a chance to surpass De Gea’s record, but with three games left in the season, they are now three clean sheets behind.

De Gea has won the Golden Glove twice while playing for Manchester United; the first time was during the 2017–18 campaign when he recorded 18 shutouts.

De Gea’s future at the club is still up in the air despite his recent success. The terms of his contract, which is due to expire at the end of the current campaign, are still being worked out.

However, it was recently rumoured that the club and the goalie were close to agreeing on a new, more affordable deal.

Man Utd supporters have recently questioned whether the team should extend De Gea’s contract, with blunders in defeats to Sevilla and West Ham proving to be particularly concerning.

However, United manager Ten Hag expressed his unwavering support for the goalkeeper, stating: “He has the most clean sheets in the league, so we would not be here in this position without him. He fully has my belief. No concerns with him. It happens, but as a team, you have to deal with it, show character, be resilient, and bounce back. We want him to stay and extend his contract.”

Aaron Ramsdale has been named Castrol Save of the Month for March for his outstanding save in Arsenal’s 3-2 win against Bournemouth at the Emirates Stadium.

On March 4, in what could turn out to be a game that defines his team’s season, Arsenal’s No. 1 was at his very best.

Ramsdale made a spectacular save to stop Dango Ouattara from scoring after his team was caught off guard by a rapid counterattack from Bournemouth. Ramsdale raced across his box to follow a Dominic Solanke cross and got his body in front of Ouattara’s ensuing side-footed attempt.

The Gunners would go on to complete a dramatic comeback, coming from two goals down to earn all three points with a 97th-minute winner from Reiss Nelson.

That win, and subsequent emphatic victories over Fulham and Crystal Palace, has seen Arsenal open up at an eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League table heading into the final ten games of the season.

Ramsdale is the third English goalkeeper to win the Castrol Save of the Month award during 2022/23, with Nick Pope and Jordan Pickford both previously winning the award.

Other nominees for the March award included Illan Meslier, Jose Sa, Alphonse Areola, David Raya and Fraser Forster.

Due to an injury, Marcus Rashford has withdrawn from England’s team for the March international break.

Since the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in November and December, the Man Utd star has been in sensational form, scoring 19 goals.

Nevertheless, due to an injury sustained during Man Utd’s FA Cup quarterfinal victory against Fulham on Sunday, the Three Lions will be missing their best player for their matches against Italy and Ukraine on March 23 and 27.

A club statement on the injury read: “Marcus Rashford has been forced to withdraw from the England squad.

“The Manchester United forward sustained a knock during the 3-1 victory over Fulham in the Emirates FA Cup quarter-final at Old Trafford on Sunday.

“Our no.10 required treatment after being hurt in the build-up to Aleksandar Mitrovic’s opener for the visitors and was later withdrawn in the 83rd minute, with Fred taking his place.”

With his departure from Gareth Southgate’s team, Rashford has joined Nick Pope and Mason Mount. While Fraser Forster has been called up to replace Pope, the England boss has no plans to bring in further players to replace Rashford or Mount.

Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Harry Kane, James Maddison, Bukayo Saka, and Ivan Toney are Southgate’s attacking possibilities for the forthcoming games.

Six of those amazing saves have made the Castrol Save of the Month selection for January 2023.

• Lukasz Fabianski vs Leeds (4/1/23)

Lukasz Fabianski made a great save to stop Rodrigo from scoring in one of the finest games of 2023 so far, quickly reacting to deflect the Leeds forward’s point-blank header over the crossbar.

• Emiliano Martinez vs Leeds (13/1/23)

The past few months have been rather good for Emiliano Martinez, who won the World Cup and the Golden Glove award at the competition.

The World Cup winner contributed to Villa’s victory over Leeds United in January by producing yet another outstanding save.

Martinez was in the ideal position to stop Jack Harrison from scoring from only three yards out after sprinting across his own line to follow a low cross from the right side.

• Aaron Ramsdale vs Tottenham (15/1/23)

In January, Ramsdale gave maybe his best performance of his career in Arsenal’s important victory over Tottenham in the north London derby.

The best of his saves during the contest was unquestionably the one he executed with his left foot, deflecting a drilled Ryan Sessegnon shot just wide of the post.

David De Gea has been in excellent form this January, as has almost every other Manchester United player.

In the 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace, the United goalie was on hand to push a superb shot from Odsonne Edouard onto the top of the crossbar.

• Nick Pope vs Crystal Palace (21/1/23)

That’s right, three Castrol Save of the Month nominations are saves made in games against Palace. You have to feel sorry for them at this point.

In order to prevent Jean-Philippe Mateta from scoring at Selhurst Park, Newcastle’s Nick Pope, who has only allowed 11 goals this season, made yet another outstanding save.

Nick Pope feels that the goal Cristiano Ronaldo attempted to score in Sunday’s scoreless draw between Manchester United and Newcastle United was correctly disallowed by referee Craig Pawson.

After Fabian Schar touched the ball back to Pope to take a free kick in the second half, Ronaldo felt he got the ball to start the scoring. However, Ronaldo sneaked in and dribbled the ball a few yards before finishing into an empty net before the Newcastle goalie touched the ball.

Pawson immediately ruled out Ronaldo’s effort, despite huge protests from United’s players, while the 37-year-old was also given a yellow card.

‘The free-kick was slightly in the wrong place and obviously, Fabby’s [Schar] rolled it back to me and walked off,’ Pope told Chronicle Live.

‘I think you know by everyone’s body language that you know he’s not meaning to take a free-kick. I think the referee sorted it out quickly and fair play to him for making the right decision and squashed it straight away.’

When asked about Ronaldo’s goal controversy, Erik ten Hag said: ‘I don’t have a comment, everyone has seen it. I shared that with them [the officials]. Everyone has seen what happened today on the pitch.’

Giving his verdict on Ronaldo’s attempt, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said: ‘I could see it at the time, and for me it was clear Fabi [Schar] wasn’t taking the kick. He was allowing Nick to do it.

‘I don’t know if the ref had blown his whistle, but I don’t think he had to restart play. For me, it was clear that Nick was waiting to actually deliver the free-kick and then, obviously, Ronaldo had taken the ball off him. It would have been a very, very difficult goal to swallow if it had stood. For me it was clear the ball it wasn’t in play.’

Pope also admits he was stranded when Marcus Rashford steered his late header wide of the post following an excellent cross from Casemiro. He said:

‘I just thought: ‘Please go wide! ‘It was an unbelievable ball in to be fair and he’s gone to head it across me and thankfully it’s gone a couple of inches wide.’
