One of the standout stories sees Grimsby Town, who stunned Manchester United in the second round, handed a tie against Sheffield Wednesday.

Defending champions Newcastle United, who ended a 56-year wait for silverware by defeating Liverpool in last season’s final, will lock horns with Bradford City. Meanwhile, Liverpool have been drawn against Southampton.

Other ties include:

• Huddersfield against Manchester City
• Lincoln City taking on Chelsea
• A fierce South London derby between Crystal Palace and Millwall
• Brentford hosting Aston Villa in one of two all-Premier League fixtures.

The third round is slated for September, with matches spread across two weeks. Clubs involved in the Champions League and Europa League will play their games during the week commencing September 22, while the rest will feature from September 15.

In a nod to history, all past winners will sport a special sleeve patch on their kits this season, displaying the number of times they have lifted the trophy. Liverpool remain the record holders, with nine Carabao Cup triumphs to date.

The EFL confirmed that teams playing in European competitions were deliberately kept apart at this stage of the competition.

On Wednesday, August 20, 2025, the Magpies released an official statement through their website addressing the remarks Isak made a day earlier on social media.

In their response, the club made it clear that the Swedish striker remains under contract and insisted that no agreement was ever reached allowing him to leave this summer.

“We are disappointed to have learned of Alexander’s comments through social media,” Newcastle’s statement read. “Alex remains a contracted player at Newcastle United, and at no point has any official from the club promised he could depart this summer. While we value our players’ input, our priority will always be the interests of the club, the team, and our supporters.

“We have explained to Alex and his representatives that the conditions for a potential transfer have not been met, and we do not expect them to be met. Newcastle United is proud of its heritage and its unity as a family club. Alex remains part of that family and will be welcomed back once he is ready to join his teammates again.”

Isak, however, had earlier released a strongly worded statement via Instagram, claiming that Newcastle had failed to honor a prior understanding regarding his future.

The forward noted that “promises were broken” and argued that trust between both parties had collapsed.
