Believe it or not, Burna Boy triumph won at the 63rd ceremony of the Grammy Awards, with his album Twice as Tall on the Best Global Music Album opened door to other Nigerian artistes and help introduce new listeners to Afrobeat.

However, it is his first GRAMMY win in his career, Burna Boy was the first winner of the newly renamed Best World category, which was previously known as Best World.

Also, many people associate Afrobeat with the audacious, flaming, talented multi-instrumentalist and founder of the genre, Fela Kuti.

The Grammy Award is a household name in the United States, It was made to honour American music, not to please the entire globe.

While the category of ‘Best World Music Album’ may be exclusive and make the Grammys appear snobbish, it has also served a purpose that centres on the global music community.

African performers are dissatisfied with the elitism of the Grammy Awards.

The argument for altering the name of the award to “Best World Music Album” is that the word “world” implies that America is not only apart from the rest of the world, but also superior to it.

Burna Boy signed with Bad Habit/Atlantic Records, where it all started in 2017, on this notation, we’ll highlight the records that edge him towards the threshold of the biggest afrobeat artiste of this generation.

Burna Boy released his fourth studio album titled African Giant on July 26, 2019, by Atlantic Records, Warner Music and Spaceship Entertainment.

The album features guest appearances from Damian Marley, Jeremih, Jorja Smith, Future, Zlatan Ibile, and others.

The 19-tracks project was championed by 8 singles, including ‘On the Low’, Killing Dem, and ‘Gbona’ amongst others, he performed “Anybody‘ at Jimmy Kimmel Live! an American late-night talk show.

On the 11th of October, Sauti Sol took to their Instagram to post a picture of the certification they received from Grammy.

They were awarded the certification as being part of the production squad for Burna Boy’s Grammy award-winning album, “Twice as Tall“.

Sauti Sol was part of the artists featured on “Twice as Tall” on the song, “Times Flies” which they also co-produced alongside Andre Harris and Hassan Jokolo.

Burna Boy reacting to the news on Twitter hailed them as his brothers and stated that they deserved it.

Burna Boy released “Twice as Tall” in 2020 and the 16-tracks project featured guest appearances from Youssou N’Dour, Naughty by Nature, Sauti Sol, Chris Martin and Stormzy.

The album had Diddy and Mama Burna Bose Ogulu serving as the record’s executive producers.

At the beginning of 2021, the album earned Burna his first Grammy award.

He became the first Nigerian and the first Afrobeat artist to do so making this is a historical win.

3-time winner of BET Best International Act award:

Burna Boy won the award for Best International Act at the recent BET Awards, impressing the country for the umpteenth time. This was his third victory, and he became the first African act to receive three BET nominations and win in a row.

Achieving a Billion streams with “African Giant”

Burna boy released his game-changing album, “African Giant” in 2019 and while it didn’t win the Grammys Best World Album category in 2020, it was a critical success.

In 2020, Burna celebrated the one year anniversary of the album and revealed that the album achieved one Billion streams making it one of the few albums by an African artist to achieve this.

The only other Nigerian artist who has topped this record is Davido with his “A Good Time” album.

2020, however, was a blessing to some artists as their songs dominated airwaves launching them to the spotlight. For others, it was a different story.

At the core of the music industry/business is the music itself. As always, enormous amounts of it were released daily in 2020. Some of those songs took flight immediately, some fell down flat, and lastly, others were abominably underrated.

This article would highlight some really good songs with huge potentials that were slept on. Sadly, everyone seems to agree that ‘this is one great song’ but they have continued to stay pathetically underrated. At least some can pass as sleeper hits but then had so much room for more growth.

Here are some of the Underrated songs for 2020;

Tuale- Seyi Shay ft Ycee, Zlatan and Small Doctor

Seyi Shay is a powerhouse in terms of vocals prowess. She is mostly known for her Afropop/R’n’B songs and hearing her do a song like Tuale was a surprise.

‘Tuale’ is a happy and vibe filled song that pays homage to the streets and deserve top have dominated the airwaves. Unfortunately even the combination of Zlatan, Ycee and Small Doctor couldn’t boost its popularity.

Badman- Tolani

Not many are familiar with the name Tolani and that’s fine as she is the sister of popular Disc Jockey, DJ Cuppy. What Cuppy lacks in Vocals and artistry, Tolani makes up for it in abundance, her only problem would be her being so reclusive, unlike her sister.

Badman which was her debut single for 2020 is a song exploring the habit of getting caught up with the ‘bad boys’

Tesina Pot- Jaido P ft Olamide

Honestly, this writer was expecting Jaido P to be another of 2020’s breakout success story like Bella Shmurda, Omah Lay, Cheque, and the rest, unfortunately, that wasn’t meant to be as there can only be many breakout songs at a time.

Though Olamide being featured on it helped boost its popularity a bit but it didn’t level up to the potentials “Tesina Pot” contained. Maybe if clubs were open, it would have helped.

“Tesina Pot” was another street anthem in the making.

Dotman- Feelings

While still enjoying the success of his 2020 debut single,”Enugbe”, Dotman dished out another hit song he titled “Feelings”. The Mid-tempo catchy tune is a motivational piece which Dotman is often fond of doing in his song.

However, unlike “Enugbe”, “Feelings” was slept on. This writer believes the latter to be more enjoyable than the former.

Where You Dey- T-classic ft Peruzzi, Mayorkun

T-Classic has been steady with releasing hit songs like “Fall in Love”, “Nobody Fine Pass You” and continued in that same lane with the release of “Where You Dey” in 2020. However, this song is heavily slept on for unpredictable reasons.

While it dominated airwaves when it was released, it didn’t reach its full potential like its predecessor. many people rarely remember that T-Classic released this song.

Money I Dey Find- Ycee

Ycee has been underground and hasn’t released many hits for a while. “Money I Dey Find” was supposed to be his redemption in 2020 but alas failed to do the needful.

In the song, Ycee expresses the fact that making money is his newest and his only goal and intends to ignore any beef.

The song is off his two-track Quaratunes EP which also houses another great but underrated song, “Tell Nobody”.

Addicted- Niniola

‘Addicted’ was the lead single from Niniola‘s 2020 sophomore album, “Colors and Sounds”. The song which is produced by her usual collaborator, Sarz samples the trending South African sub-genre, Amapiano.

Niniola has made a name for herself as the Nigerian Queen of Afro-House with her sultry voice and erotic lyrics layered on an Afro-House beat. So for her Sophomore album, she decided to stretch out a bit and the result was a beauty.

However, Addicted was slept amassing only a few million streams on Youtube and Audiomack. The album didn’t fare any better. But as we know, numbers don’t technically translate to quality work.

Target You- 2Baba ft Syemca

2Baba is a legend on his own, being able to stay relevant in an ever-competitive industry for almost two-decade is no small feat.

2Baba proved he still more left in him by dropping an album in 2020 titled “Warriors”. The album which featured the likes of Wizkid, Burna Boy, Tiwa Savage, and others produced hits. While some were commercially successful, others were slept upon like “Target You”.

“Target You” is a mid-tempo love song that has Upcoming singer, Syemca handling the chorus.

Make Up Your Mind- Ice Prince Ft Tekno

“Make Up Your Mind” is a dope jam with an addictive melody and banging beat that shows the musical chemistry between Ice Prince and Tekno. The two acts had teamed up on “Boss” which was produced by Tekno and was a commercial hit.

“Make Up Your Mind” failed to repeat the same success “Boss” did. and not because of the quality but because of the heavy saturation of songs in 2020.

Burna Boy met up with the legendary trio, Angela Yee, DJ Envy, and Charlamagne Tha God to discuss black power and his new album.

During the conversation, the singer revealed his collaboration with Diddy, his thoughts on Africanism, and Twice as Tall. The best thing about the interview was when Burna Boy corrected DJ Envy’s allusion that he’s been stuck in “Africa.” Burn Boy said, “Lagos.”

1) ‘Twice As Tall’ would have been titled, ‘African Giant Part II’

In May 2020, Burna Boy did a Q&A with his fans. During the conversations, he revealed that his new album would be titled, Twice As Tall – after the unsavory experiences at the 2020 Grammy Awards.

But during his chat with The Breakfast Club, he says, “To be honest, man I wanted to call it ‘African Giant Part II’ but ‘African Giant’ did so well, I didn’t want to put pressure on this one.”

2) Working with Diddy

When queried about how Diddy’s contributions and influence on the album, Burna Boy said, “He’s someone I’ve always looked up to, it’s a big blessing for me. It wasn’t the plan in the beginning [laughs], but then it just happened organically and it’s been perfect every step of the way, you know…”

He continues, “I just wanted this album to be a strong bridge to everywhere there is black people. I just felt Diddy would be the best person to bring that power… I didn’t expect him to put in all that work. I appreciate it, man.”

3) Why does Burna Boy advocate black power and Pan-Africanism

Burna Boy has always championed black power and Pan-Africanism. On that, he says, “It’s very important to me because I feel like most of us black people don’t understand the importance of us being together at a time like this and we tend to forget that our real power will come from the fact that the rest of the world sees this united black power.

“That’s the scariest thing western civilization and all that – the power of black unity. If that can be achieved, the world would be black [laughs].”

On what he perceives to be ‘blackness,’ he says, “Blackness has nothing to do with where you’re from and where you’ve been. At this point, blackness is the togetherness and the fact that we all share the same struggles… The minute we understand that is the minute we come together to win this struggle. We can’t win this struggle without a base… [Blackness] belongs to you as it belongs to us…”

4) COVID-19 aided the making of ‘Twice As Tall’

Burna Boy had spoken about how he made ‘Monsters You Made’ with Chris Martin during COVID-19. Word on the street is that Coldplay was actually the dream collaboration from a strategy point of view, but only Chris Martin could be had. The self-acclaimed African Giant has credited the lack of mobility from COVID-19 with aiding the creation of Twice As Tall.

He says that he didn’t have anywhere to go or anything to do, so he focused on the album. He also says that he hasn’t been in the same place for more than two weeks over the past three years. He calls himself, “A Traveller.”

5) The first song Burna Boy ever learned was a ‘Hip-Hop Hurray’ by Naughty By Nature

When asked about featuring the American trio of Naughty By Nature on his new album, Twice As Tall, Burna Boy says that “Oh man, People might not know this, but the first song I learned how to sing word for word in my whole life – I must have been three years old at the time – was [Hip-Hop Hurray’ by Naughty By Nature]… I would be jumping on tables, singing it…”

However, Burna Boy denies that that such collaboration is him trying to break out of the Afrobeats genre. He says, “I don’t like putting myself in a box or restricting myself musically. It’s also about fulfilling childhood dreams…”

Burna Boy recently dropped his fifth album, “Twice as Tall” and as you can expect social media is buzzing with the news. The album has Diddy has its Executive producer.

The album features the likes of Senegalese legend Youssou N’Dour, Naughty By Nature, Kenyan afro-pop band Sauti Sol, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, U.K. rapper Stormzy as well as production from Timbaland, Mike Dean and more.

Burna Boy narrowly missed out on his first-ever Grammy Award this year when he lost out to African legend, Angelique Kidjo.

This time around though, Diddy wants Burna Boy to aim higher. In his words, “You know you’re going for album of the year, you feel me, not going for no African…” On a chat with New York Times, Diddy also stated categorically, “I’m on record that I like hit records. If they’re not hit records, I don’t like them.”

What we know about Burna Boy’s “Twice as Tall” album

Burna Boy announced a few days ago that he would be releasing his fifth studio album, “Twice as Tall” on August 14th.

The album which has American Rapper and Entrepreneur, Diddy as its Executive Producer boast of an impressive line up like Sauti Sol, Youssou N’dour, Chris Martins of Cold Play, Naughty by Nature, Stormzy.

Burna is also going to be releasing a comic book called “The secret Flames” alongside the album which will both be released on the same day.

The comic book is supposed to help the message of the album in perceptive.
