It only makes sense to begin this list with the event that best represents Davido’s entry into the Nigerian music scene: the release of his smash hit, Dami Duro. It was released as the second single from his debut album, Omo Baba Olowo.

At the time, Davido was hardly a household name. But, it was his cheerful singing and vivacious excitement that drew people’s attention and effectively cemented him as a rising star. The song was released in October 2011, and Clarence Peters’ video was released a few months later.

Davido had previously released a number of songs before Dami Duro.

His debut single, Back When, which featured Naeto C, received a good amount of radio play and national recognition. Yet his second song’s popularity was what helped him break into the industry.

Davido signed a contract with Sony Music Entertainment’s African division in 2016. This entailed improved distribution, a larger audience, and Davido’s exposure to a foreign music scene that he would follow for the remainder of his career. IF, Fall, Like Dat, and FIA were just a few of his outstanding singles released that year. It was expected that he would receive a MOBO award among other honours given to him that year given the strength of his résumé.

But, it was not all joy and enjoyable music. That same year, he was significantly embroiled in the drama surrounding the death of an acquaintance, Tagbo. The topic was then taken up by disgruntled members of the public, the police, and actress Caroline Danjuma. It hung over Davido like a heavy cloud.

However, he overcame the situation, which led to the release of FIA, a slow-moving but resolute song in which he conveyed his pain. That became another major smash for him, demonstrating his claim to having the Midas touch.

Coming to America

Before Naeto C made the cap his signature look, hulas only went with traditional garb for men but the rapper rebranded the hat and gave it a contemporary feel that went with everything from tees and jeans to gowns.

Naeto C’s style included sunglasses, tuxedos or business suits, and recognizable T-shirts imprinted with slang from his songs. Everyone attempting to be as cool as him immediately absorbed his general laid-back swag.

Don Jazzy- Walking Stick

Don Jazzy, who produced the majority of Mohits and Mavin’s early songs, made boss-like cameo appearances in their videos with his ornate walking stick.

It’s unclear whether he’ll ever go back to the color of his hair before he was reborn, or if he’ll change it from blue to a different color.

Rema- Ski Mask and Teddy Bear

In 2019, he entered the game as a thief in the night, donning a knitted ski mask and brandishing a teddy bear he referred to as his “best friend” in a Twitter outburst.

Celebrating the Classic Nigerian songs turning 15 years in 2022.

2007 was a pivotal time in the Nigerian Music industry. Its era saw artists like Asa, Timaya, 9ice drop their debut albums to critical and commercial acclaim.

In Nigeria, Mo Hits, the largest label at the time, released a first-of-its-kind label compilation album.

The project produced singles like “Booty call,” “Move your body,” and “Close to you,” with Don Jazzy, the country’s most prolific producer at the time, handling the majority of the production.

Much has changed in the industry in the 15 years since 2007. Nigerian music has progressed in leaps and bounds to the point where it can now be classified as mainstream music on a global scale.

While this is stunning, it would be negligent of anyone to overlook the amount of effort that went into getting the scene to where it is now.

The early and mid-2000s labour put in by artists, labels, and other business stakeholders is unquestionably what the scene is benefiting from now.

Kini Big Deal- Naeto C ft. Ikechukwu

Naeto C had been around for a long before the release of “Kini Big Deal.”

This, however, was the song that revolutionized his life and the course of Nigerian commercial rap music.

Prior to this, rappers of the time were more concerned with the technical aspects of rapping, hence the commercial worth of their music was poor. Naeto proved that you can be a great rapper and write a terrific rap-pop song at the same time.

Yahooze- Olu Maintain

It wasn’t a party if you didn’t play Olu Maintain’s “Yahozee” at your party in 2007.
