So for me, I always knew that if my IP is anchored to a region where one million streams is $300, I am cooked,” Awoniyi said. “I knew this from Nonso’s time because, like I said, the trickle-down effect of the economy is going to hit the citizens regardless.”

He further compared the Nigerian reality with that of Spotify’s home country, Sweden — a high-income territory where artists reportedly earn significantly more per stream.

“Your purchasing power is going to be limited. Do you know the highest territory for streaming Spotify? Sweden is where Spotify is from. Your one million streams is between 8–10 grand.”

You know, when you present paperwork for artists to sign, it’s always tricky. But she was chasing me to sign my own part. And I have never experienced that before.

“I was like, ‘You don’t mind signing paperwork? Hold on, let’s not do this. You’re someone I can rock with for life. Let’s start a company.’ Prior to this, Tems and I were friends for about three months and we never spoke about working together.”

The Titanium Award is given to musicians whose songs have been streamed 1 billion spins on iHeartRadio stations in the United States.

Wizkid and Tems were honoured after their popular song ‘Essence’ earned 1 billion spins on iHeartRadio stations.

Since its premiere in 2021, the song “Essence” has helped the artists win awards. It was the best collaboration winner of the 2022 BET award. ‘Essence‘ by Wizkid won five honours at the 15th Headies Awards.
