Club brawl with Obafemi Martins

In march 2022, Obagoal became the topic of conversation online when indigenous rapper, CDQ, blasted Burna Boy for disrespecting the football star.

According to reports, Burna Boy engaged in combat in Lagos’ Bayrock Club with Obafemi Martins and CDQ.

Reports claim that Burna Boy confronted Obafemi Martins and demanded that the football player show him some respect, which sparked the altercation.

Hours later, a video showing the trio relaxing in the same VIP area surfaced, suggesting that the “fight” had apparently come to an end.

Longtime beef with Davido

Although the pair had been trading lyrical jabs from the vocal booth, they practically took their war to the streets of Ghana. In 2020, at a club in Ghana, the two got into a free-for-all brawl.

Steven Mingle, a bystander, claimed that Burna Boy entered the club and charged at Davido. Later, the African Giant and his boys were ordered to leave the area.

Online fight with AKA

In 2019, when xenophobic riots happened in the South African city of Johannesburg from September 1–5, resulting in the deaths of at least seven people, Burna Boy reacted to the attacks as Nigerians were also impacted.

This sparked outrage on social media as Burna Boy declared that he would boycott South Africa because his fellow Nigerians were being mistreated.

Burna Boy targeted AKA in a series of tweets during the xenophobic attacks for his stance on the attacks against Nigerians in South Africa.

Although they have a record together ― All Eyes on Me ― Burna Boy, in one of his several tweets, threatened to ‘deal’ with the South African rapper when next their paths crossed.

He wrote, “And @akaworldwide I knew you was retarded but I didn’t know it had gotten this bad. Next time I see you, you better have a big security bro, On Gambos Grave ur gunna need it.” (sic)

Burna Boy further narrated how he suffered a xenophobic attack in South Africa in 2017.

“I personally have had my own xenophobic experiences at the hands of South Africans and because of that, I have not set foot in SA since 2017. And I will NOT EVER go to South Africa again for any reason until the SOUTH AFRICAN government wakes the fuck up and really performs A miracle because I don’t know how they can even possibly fix this,” he wrote.

Physical assault on Mr 2kay

Their feud began in October 2017 when Mr 2Kay reacted to Burna Boy’s negative remarks regarding Nigerian pastors. According to Mr. 2kay, Burna Boy should not have slandered pastors since they are anointed men of God. He made this observation during an interview.

His remarks did not sit well with Burna Boy who allegedly threatened him. “You better have that energy when I come for you because I’m coming for you,” he allegedly threatened.

On, October 22, 2017, Tubaba and Tiwa Savage headlined Buckwyld ‘n’ Breathless at Eko Hotel & Suites where Mr 2Kay performed.

After his performance, he went to his room at the hotel where he was attacked and robbed. Most of his possessions were gone and he was left with bruises. The case was reported to the police by the hotel management.

The police arrested four suspects including the road manager of Burna boy, Joel. During interrogation, the robbers confessed that they were hired by Burna Boy through his manager.

On November 20, 2017, the police announced that Burna Boy was wanted for questioning over Mr 2Kay’s robbery incident.

The singer later honoured the police invitation. So far, it seems the case has been settled.

Tonto Dikeh

Tonto released two tracks on October 17, 2012: Itz Ova and High. Both songs were ridiculed by the general public, and she became a Twitter trend for days.

Burna Boy posted on his Twitter page that those who put out subpar music deserve to die.

He wrote, “God punish all of you who disrespect the name of music by releasing d noisy wackness being released these days. Death is d least yu deserve.”

Many believed his tweet was directed at Tonto Dikeh, even though the singer did not mention any names.

On October 21, 2012, Burna Boy fell on stage in the middle of his performance at the Hip Hop World Awards.

A few hours after the Hip Hop World Awards, Tonto Dike took to her Twitter account to diss Burna Boy; this time, she mentioned his name.

One of the most talked-about scandals in Nigerian entertainment a few years ago was the attack on musician Mr 2kay by some hoodlums in Eko hotel.

Trouble began for 2kay when he lambasted Burna Boy over a tweet. Burna Boy immediately responded with a threat.

Mr 2kay was robbed and beaten to a pulp following the “Buckwyld N Breathless” event at the Eko Hotel and Suites on Sunday, October 22, 2017.

Four suspects were detained following the event, and they later admitted to the robbery and attack of Mr. 2Kay, including his road manager, Joel.

During interrogation, the robbers admitted to being hired by Burna Boy.

The police then declared Burna Boy wanted over the incident. Burna Boy was later arraigned in court over the crime.

Both singers finally put the feud behind them in 2021. A video of the two PH singers hanging out together was shared online.

Coachella and saga of the font

in 2019, when the singer called out the organisers of the annual music and arts festival for printing his name on the poster of the event in small letters.

According to him, he represents a whole generation of solid African creatives globally and therefore, deserves to be given a prominent space on the poster.

Burna reiterated that he is an ‘’African Giant’ who wouldn’t be reduced to whatever the tiny writing meant while urging the organisers to fix things quickly.

Expectedly, the singer’s outburst triggered reactions from his fans, forcing the organisers to effect a correction on the poster by enlarging his name.

This incident inspired the title of his first Grammy-nominated album, “African Giant” which was released in 2019.

Alleged fight with Davido in Ghana

Nigerians awoke in December 2020 to reports of an alleged altercation between Burna Boy and Davido in a bar in Ghana.

According to several reports, the two music stars got into a scuffle after Burna Boy moved to the club where Davido was partying.

Many eyewitnesses gave several reports as to what transpired at the club that night. Some said the fight broke out after Davido’s men tried to prevent Burna Boy from entering the club

It came as no surprise when it was reported that the two singers actually got physical at the club because it was well known that they did not get along too well.

Clash with CDQ

In March 2021, rapper CDQ called Burna Boy out for disrespecting former Nigerian international footballer Obafemi Martins and for being associated with people that attacked him.

Burna Boy and his group were at Quilox, an exotic club on Victoria Island in Lagos, on the evening of February 28. That evening, Martins and his group were also present at the club.

Then, a brawl started between businessman Rahman Jago, a well-known Burna Boy associate, and another person.

Martins’ camp was impacted since the problem grew so big. They clashed with the former Super Eagles player and his camp because of Jago’s connections to Burna Boy.

Martins himself got physically involved and in the heat of the moment, the footballer had to defend himself and found a way to escape the drama and the danger of it.

A bemused CDQ, who was also at the club on the night, vented at Burna Boy on social media. He felt Burna Boy’s camp had disrespected Martins, a respected footballer and philanthropist.

Bole and Fish saga

Burna Boy and his team were called out on social media by a Bole and Fish vendor who accused them of not paying after she brought the delicacy to them in London.

Recall that Burna used social media to offer a sizable reward to anyone who could provide him PH-style fish and bole in London.

The seller contacted his group and ultimately delivered. She did, however, mention that she was never compensated for it.

The Cubana shooting

Burna was once more accused of instigating a shooting at Cubana Nightclub in May 2022.

After multiple witnesses described what transpired, one of the victims involved offered her account of what happened.

According to the victim, Briella Neme, they were visiting Nigeria from the United States of America and the United Kingdom for a friend’s wedding.

Briella described how Burna Boy’s men approached her three times and asked her to meet him.

She claimed that as a result, her friends and Burna Boy’s crew got into an altercation. However, the security staff at the club quickly put a stop to it.

Things took a different turn when Burna Boy’s friends started a fight again and started shooting. She alleged that Burna Boy gave the green light to his security to start shooting at them in the club while he laughed about it.

Briella while recounting what happened said within a split second there was chaos in the club. Her partner and friend were shot in the head and leg respectively.

Davido and Wizkid like every music artiste in this article started out as friends but the rapid growth of the former saw him become rival to a man that used to inspire his work.

The pair had been in a heated battle of supremacy along the lines of chart list dominance, talents, and the calibres of international collaborations for years.

The first time the duo were publicly sorted their issue was during Wizkid’s concert, which took place at the Eko Convention Centre in Lagos in December 2017 where they performed together.

However, their feud continued the following years disappointing many music lovers and worsening the issue between the fanbases.

Recently a video of them cuddling appeared online, which sent the internet into a frenzy. The two were apparently clubbing at Quilox when they saw each other and gave each other a hearty hug.

Don Jazzy and Olamide

This was undoubtedly the most high-profile celebrity feud of 2016. It all started with Don Jazzy’s singer, Reekado Banks, receiving the highly coveted Next Rated Award at the Headies Awards.

Olamide was disappointed since he had hoped that his artist at the moment, Lil Kesh, would receive the prize. He expressed his dissatisfaction while accepting his own award.

Don Jazzy, who felt slighted by Olamide’s outburst, stormed the stage and demanded that Olamide come up to the podium and accept the prize for the prized award, a car, if he feel wronged.

After years of hostility, 2baba and Blackface reconciled and buried the hatchet.

Years ago, 2baba (Innocent Idibia) and his old Plantashun Boiz label mate Blackface (Ahmedu Augustine Obiabo) had a falling out when the latter accused the former of ripping off his song, African Queen.

African Queen was originally created by Blackface, but 2Baba allegedly remade the song without giving him credit, causing him to lose royalties.

An enraged Blackface, who has been passionate about his charges since the release of African Queen in 2004, has pursued it with all means available, including calling out his former label partner on social media.

2Baba, enraged by Blackface’s frequent attacks, filed a defamation suit against him for N50 million, resulting in the music industry’s most famous legal battle.

After a supposed out-of-court settlement, Blackface agreed to stop publicly defaming 2Face’s image in exchange for the latter agreeing to work out a settlement plan allowing the former to profit from the hit single’s earnings.

Despite the fact that they both chose an out-of-court settlement, their rivalry lasted after several attempts to reconcile them by entertainment industry giants failed.

However, after the shocking death of Sound Sultan in 2021, Eddy Lawani, the man who literarily found Plantashun Boiz, used Sound Sultan’s tribute night to bring the feuding parties together.

After what could be perceived as a squashing of their long-running feud, the event reached a pinnacle with a magnificent musical performance by Plantashun Boiz (2Face, Blackface, and Faze).

Zlatan and DJ Cuppy

DJ Cuppy and Zlatan in 2021 made the headlines after the former took to social media to reveal that the latter had blocked her on all available social media channels.

Zlatan did not help issues when he denied knowing who Cuppy was when asked about the issue during an interview.

Afeare Israel also known as Israel DMW, logistics manager to Davido revealed that the Zanku rapper did not make any money from his collaboration with DJ cuppy in their hit song ‘Gelato’.

In 2019, Vector made headlines after he dropped a diss song for fellow rapper, M.I Abaga. Prior to that, there had been cold tension between the two and wasn’t until Vector dropped a diss track, things began to unravel.

This led to a couple of diss songs traded between the two rappers and a docu-series by Hennessy on the growth of Hip-Hop in Nigeria.

In 2020, decided to sheath their swords and end their famous beef which dominated the Nigerian rap scene the previous year.

In the third and final part of “The Conversation”, a Hennessy Nigeria documentary series based on the rivalry between M.I and Vector, the duo met face-to-face and discussed what transpired between them.

The episode started with both rappers previewing what the other had said during the course of the series. At one point, M.I said he had the impression that Vector just doesn’t like him, while Vector said he believes M.I is cunning and deceptive.

Later, M.I and Vector were invited into the same room where they discussed their rivalry and resolved the issues between them.

Not too long, Vector dropped a rap track titled “Crown of Clay” which featured M.I and Pheelz. In 2022, they also dropped another track titled ‘Spirit“.

Burna Boy and Davido

Another major beef in the Nigerian music industry that also came to an end was that of Burna Boy and Davido.

The “Bank On It” crooner took to his Instagram story to inform his fans that he has “no issue” with Davido, assuring that they have now settled their drawn-out rift.

The head or tail of their beef isn’t certain but according to Davido in an interview with notable compere Ebuka on Bounce radio, his relationship with Burna Boy went sour after he posted a picture of himself and Wizkid as the “greatest of all time(goat).”

Shortly after Davido’s post, Burna Boy tweeted “everybody knows you don’t know how to play football, your dad bought the football team.”

Ever since then the duo have not ceased to take shady jabs at each other publicly.

Moving forward, Burna boy insists they must love themselves regardless.

“2022 all of us must love ourselves by fire by force, if not make we just kill ourselves,” Burna Boy said.

Music festivals are a relatively recent addition to the independent arts festival scene in Nigeria and account for 15% of all festivals in the country.

Based on the international popularity Nigerian musicians have, the music festivals are able to adopt a commercial model offering a variety of revenue streams which include entry tickets, concessions, merchandise, advertising, VVIP tables and hospitality areas.

Music-led festivals are able to attract significant government and corporate support because of their ability to draw audiences in the thousands and generate high levels of local, regional and international media exposure.

Extension of Record Label

The fastest and easiest method to blow as an upcoming artist in Nigeria is to sign a record label deal with popular and successful music records.

There is a need for a renowned record label to extend to other regions, in other words having YBNL, Mavins, DMW, Kennis music, etc in other regions will serve a long way in decentralizing the Nigerian music industry.

The Media

The media plays important role in centralization, there isn’t much debate about it, they focus only on the mainstream, extending or engulfing other regions will channel the spotlight to other regions as well, from radios, TV channels, magazines, and other media outlets.

Show Promoters/Organisers

show promoters can also play important roles in billing and allocating big stage concerts regularly to other regions, it will bring the spotlight and other investors around the region.

While people will argue that the industry is a Yoruba-dominated one due to the common use of the language in songs and most Nigerian Artists are from the tribe, other regions have also done their part in producing talented artists, most especially Port-Harcourt.

Recently, Burna Boy became the first Nigeria-based artist to win the Grammys’ “Global Music Album” category with his 2020 “Twice as Tall’ album.

Here are some Popular Artists Port-Harcourt city have produced;

Duncan Mighty

One of the great Port-Harcourt artists, Duncan Mighty made a name with his vibrant Highlife sound spiced by his usage of his native Ikwerre dialect.

In 2010 he released his sophomore album, ‘Ahamefuna (Legacy)” which produced hits like Obianuju and Port-Harcourt son” which earned him popularity in other regions.

In 2018, he made a spectacular return to nationwide fame as he enjoyed a feature run that saw him appear on tracks alongside Wizkid, Tiwa Savage and Davido, among others.

Timaya

Timaya actually hails from Odi, Bayelsa but was born and bred in Port-Harcourt. It was from the city his career started.

The Egberi Papa has been around for a while. His earliest songs spoke against the oil-related politically-sponsored conflict which has rocked the South-South for some time now. Nowadays he’s an Afro Dancehall legend whose influence transcends borders.

Burna Boy

Burna Boy is probably the biggest export of Port-Harcourt so far. The self-proclaimed African Giant has the whole world eating from the palm of his hands. He is also the only Port-Harcourt artist to have been nominated for a Grammy twice and win one time.

Mr 2Kay

Mr 2Kay was born in Port Harcourt. After his birth, his family moved to Bonny Island, Rivers State where he grew up.

He enjoyed a good 2010s run which began with “Bubugaga” (2012), and has several hits to his name.

Omah Lay

Omah Lay is the latest act from the oil-rich city that is dominating airwaves.

Within the period of one year, Omah Lay has risen from obscurity to be one of the hottest new acts from Nigeria thanks to the runaway success of his ‘Get Layd’ EP which landed him a deal with Warner Music Group.

Ajebo Hustlers

Ajebo Hustlers made up of Knowledge and Piego, scored a hit with the street conscious ‘Barawo’ in 2020 and tapped Afrobeats superstar Davido for the remix.

The Port Harcourt duo at first attained recognition in their home city and have begun to make targeted efforts at a larger market. With a fresh sound that spurned the 2018 project ‘Ideas in my Voicenote’, they’ve managed to consistently climb to something great.

Mercy Chinwo

Mercy Chinwo became popular after winning Season 2 of the Nigerian Idol in 2012. The talented vocalist has gone on to become one of the foremost gospel musicians and songwriters, holding her turf with acclaimed albums and hits like “Excess Love“, “Incredible God” and “Akamdinelu.”

Mr Eazi

While Ghana influenced his sounds, Mr Eazi was actually born in Port-Harcourt where he stayed until he moved with his family to Lagos aged 4.

The singer had a great run from 2015 to 2017 when he released hit songs like, “Skin Tight”, “Anointing”, “Leg Over”, “Ohema” and others.

Ric Hassani

Ric Hassani was born in Port-Harcourt but later travelled out of the country for school. In the early days of his career, he was known as Rico Slim. 

Hassani released his debut album The African Gentleman in 2016. He is said to have a dress style that is influenced by his self-acclaimed stance as an African gentleman.

Recall that in 2017, Burna Boy had allegedly sent thugs to attack Mr 2Kay at Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

In a recent interview with The Punch, the singer said,

“The incident happened about four years ago. We went back and forth on the case for some time.

At some point, the guys who carried out the attack were arrested and they were locked up for over two years. Their parents and Burna Boy’s people kept begging. At the end of the day, I decided to withdraw the case out of court.

A lot of people that I respect, including my godfather (Tonye Princewill), and kinsmen reached out to me. I listened to those people and withdrew the case.”

He also added that the Grammy Nominated singer reached out to him severally after the incident to apologise.

“Yes, he reached out to me (to apologise) when the case was very ‘hot’. He actually called me, though that part was never put out in the public. It was quite a long conversation and he apologised,” he said.

When asked what caused the spat between them, Mr 2kay said,

“I cannot really give you all the details. To be honest with you, I have taken my mind off it because at some point, it was affecting with me mentally.

Whenever I heard doors opening or I saw people with guns, flashes of the incident came back to me. However, I think it all started from an interview when a journalist asked me a question and I answered. But, he (Burna Boy) did not get it the right way. He flared up and it led to something else. We then exchanged some messages on social media before the incident happened.”

Gifty threw shade at her Mr 2Kay on her Instagram story after he posted a birthday wish for their daughter on his page.

The singer had posted an adorable photo of their child, Alisha, as she clocked three and he accompanied it with sweet birthday wishes.

He wrote:

“Shine bright my diamond ????, Happy birthday to my beautiful, lovely & adorable daughter Queen A. May God Blessings & Grace continue to be with you all the days of ur life Aman. #Alishais3“

In reaction to the birthday post, Gifty threw shade at the singer on her page. The reality show star said she wondered how someone would put her daughter’s picture on his page, claiming her as his.

She then proceeded to ask what the definition of a father was. She then added that she would start arresting people guilty of the act.

Buju

Daniel Benson also known as Buju is an Afro-Fusion Singer and Songwriter. The name ‘Buju‘ is a coined acronym that stands for ‘Beauty Underneath Just Understood’. He is the young artist who burst onto the scene in 2019 after his request for Zlatan to feature on his song, ‘Spiritual’ went viral. Buju recently got signed to Burna Boy‘s record label, Spaceship Records. He also released the remix of his song “L’enu” featuring his new boss, Burna Boy.

Recall that, Mp3bullet.ng reported that Buju got into trouble for insulting an upcoming artiste after the artiste begged him to feature on his song.

Ceeza Milli

Ceeza Milli came to the limelight after featuring in Wizkid‘s 2018 banger, “Soco” and since then gone on to produce songs like “Nawa”, “Kofindential”, “Stranger”. He is signed to the Aristokrat record label.  Mp3bullet.ng once reported how Ceeza Milli found himself in trouble after Burna Boy had threatened him for claiming he wrote Burna Boy 2018 “On The Low” song.

Ckay

Ckay is an artist signed to Chocolate City Music label, his 2018 song, “Container” introduced him to music lovers but it was his Love Nwantiti remix featuring Joeboy and Kuami Eugene that gave him the recognition he needed. Recall,  Mp3bullet.ng reported that International model, Winnie Harlow played his song, Love Nwantiti during P. Diddy‘s dance-a-thon Instagram live session.

Dotman

Olatunji Oladotun Alade popularly known as Dotman came into the music scene in 2015 and has dished out songs like “Awe’, “Yes Melo”, “Akube”, and he recently released “Enugbe” which is currently rocking the airwaves.

Mr 2kay

Abinye David Jumbo better known as Mr 2Kay is a singer who was formerly signed to Grafton Entertainment but left the label in 2018 to float his own imprint Better Life Entertainment. He broke into the music scene with his 2014 smash hit song, “Bad Girl” featuring Patoranking.

King Perryy

King Perryy is a recording and performing artiste signed to Timaya’s DM Records.  He came to the limelight with his 2019 song “Murder” featuring Teni. Blaqbonez

Emeka Akumefule, known professionally as Blaqbonez, is a Nigerian rapper signed to 100 Crowns, an imprint of Chocolate City. Blaqbonez started exploring his rap skills from a tender age and has won several rap competitions and has released 8 EPs and a mixtape.He is widely known for his controversial self-proclaimed status as the “Best Rapper In Africa” (abbreviated as “BRIA”), which became the most talked about topic in the Nigerian hip hop space between July and September 2019

Terri

Terri who is signed to Wizkid’s Starboy Label was discovered after he performed a cover to ‘Oshey’ by DJ Jimmy Jatt featuring Wizkid on Instagram in January 2018 after which he got a message from and had a meeting with Mut4y – one-half of Legendury Beatz and Head of Music at Starboyleading to him getting signed in February of the same year.

He became popular after getting featured in Wizkid’s 2018 banger, “Soco”. he recently released his first major project, Afroseries, a seven tracklist EP with Ojoro as its lead single.

Ladipoe

Ladipo Eso popularly known as Ladipoe or Poe is a Nigerian musician and rapper signed to Mavin Record label. He came into the limelight after featuring in “Feel Alright” by SDC “Show Dem Camp” and Falz‘s debut single, “Marry Me”. His recent song “Know You” featuring Simi is currently topping music charts.

Brymo

Ọlawale Ọlọfọrọ also known as Brymo is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and author. He was formerly signed to Chocolate city where he was featured in Ice Prince’s 2011 “Oleku”. His 2012 hit song, “Ara” made him more popular. He recently released his seventh studio album, “Yellow”.
