At a time when hip-hop was coming in, afropop was gaining traction, and dancehall was king, Shank was one of the artists that rose from ‘upcoming’ and gave us hit (you may want to add an “s”?) “Julie” and “Salute” were major club hits, and were banging on radio, in ’09. Shank’s fame quickly spread, and by the time his album “King Kong” came, he was somewhat of a household name.

The “King Kong” album housed “Julie,” and three ‘eye-catching’ collabos. “Never Felt” with D’banj (everyone wanted the Koko, then), “Shorty” that had American superstar, Akon and “Won Le Nu” featuring Dagrin. The album was a success, and… the rest is history!

Shank didn’t dwindle, he just left the scene. No signs of a comeback. And all that’s left of Shank are just memories of his heydays… Does he even cross anyone’s mind, these days? Is he anyone’s favourite? Do new artists look up to him? Is he done making music? Is he going to come back?

That’s all that is left of the superstar. Questions, just questions!

Born Chinedu Naze, the now-35-year-old singer, was known not only for his works with Akon, D’banj and others, but also for the influences he got from the legendary maestro, Fela. His sound is predominantly dancehall/reggae, hence the popular phrase; “before there was ever Burna Boy, there was Shank!”

At a young age, I was addicted to MTV Base, that showed every week day, on Silverbird. A lot of my favourite artists, I discovered them through the show. But I can’t forget how I got addicted. That very day, in 2012, I had seen the Video of Darey’s “Sisi Eko,” the remix which featured Flavour.

To be honest, it was classic!

That must have been the big break for Darey, the general acceptance of the single was just impressive. Darey is an RnB artist, and ’11 was a year, when rap music was still dominating. If it was not hip-hop, then it was Afro-Pop. Never highlife, never RnB. But, somehow Darey had managed to gain his ground, in the Soul/RnB music genre. Flavour too, was doing fine.

Having served us a sound that stood out.

So, Darey wanted to do an album, and the highlife “Sisi Eko” actually made the cut. His “Double Dare” album had dropped, and the critical reviews were in favour of the Soul Muzik singer.

Then, just when we thought he was done with the album, he wowed us by releasing a Remix to the track ” Sisi Eko.” And, on it he had featured “Oyi” crooner, and one of the few Igbos making waves in the industry, Flavour N’abania.

Flavour added his own spice to the jam, and it went gaga, across the country.

To further boost, a Video for it was unleashed. Very colourful video, which had cameo appearances from stars like, Alibaba, Seun Kuti, Dr. Sid, Zaina and others.

While many other bangin’ collabos have come out of Nigeria, don’t you think “Sisi Eko” is the classiest?

For lovers of Naija music, “Olufunmi” remains the most classic of all RnB records, that we’ve heard. And, the record is un-beaten, till date. While you may argue, and bring up some other mega songs like Paul Play Dairo’s “Angel Of My Life” and 2Baba’s “African Queen”, there is no doubt in the fact that “Olufunmi” was the most-complete RnB record, ever, having the best vocals, a catchy hook delivered in Yoruba, an Afro-esque beat, and even rap.

Just so you know, STYL-Plus was a RnB group that rocked the early 2000’s. Starting off with four members (Shifi Emoefe, Tunde Akinsanmi, Yemi Akinwonmi and Lanre Faneyi), as STYL, an acronym of their first names. Back in 1997. In 1998, Lanre died, and subsequently, Zeal Onyecheme was added, prompting the addition of “Plus” to their name. Before they could do anything big together, Yemi, also left, in 2002. So, for the most part of it, Styl-Plus operated as a trio. And, they were sucessful!

“Olufunmi” was their biggest hit. Off their 2006 album, “Expressions”, many other hits like “Imagine That”, “Runaway” and “Call My Name” were spurred. But “Olufunmi” stood out, as a classic element. It was a song begging a defiant girlfriend, who was determined to leave ’cause of some rumours. From the storyline, to the lyrics, and the instrumental (supplied by T-Jazz), everything was perfect.

Being a successful hit, a Remix featuring Da Capo came, and an Official Video. Although by the time it was 2008, Styl-Plus were almost obsolete, “Olufunmi” will forever be remembered, as one of the classic RnB songs Nigeria’s ever witnessed. We don’t even have RnB, in the mainstream, anymore!!!

In Durella’s case, he never got the chance to get to the Topmost, but he was a star. Some call him “one-hit wonder”, but of a truth, Durella had many hits. And, he was one of the artists that held Nigeria in ’08. It was the year, he had dropped his debut album, “King Of The Zanga.”

The singer, born Oluwadamilare Okulaja, had by chance, met Execs of TC Record, while he was performing at a show. And, later, they had signed him. Back in 2006. Prior to the album, in 2008, he already had hits like “Enu O Se” and “Shayo,” which disturbed the airwaves, that year. And, so it was just normal he dropped the album.

When the Album dropped, in February, it wasn’t a disappointment. With mad jams like “Wiskolowiska”, ” Shayo”, “Queen Of My Zanga”, “Enu O Se” and “Gunners Anthem”, Durella went from just a regular artist, to a well-respected pop star.

Although, fate quickly took it’s toll on the singer, as his fame began to dwindle, right after, today we still have a lot to remember him for. If notfor the ’08 album, we can remember his 2011 collabo with Wizkid, called “GaGa”, or for the D’banj song he was featured on. He’s worked with artists like Timaya, Terry G and more.

Even though, unlike his “sound-alike”, D’banj, he’s not a star anymore, in 2008, he did drop a bang album, we all loved.

Meanwhile, where on earth is he now?

Back in 2008, if you think M.I isn’t the best rapper, you have to keep those “abominatous” thoughts to yourself. You dare not say it out, you may End up getting lynched. OK, that’s an hyperbole. But, then, M.I wasn’t only the best rapper because that’s what he was called, he actually did what a “best rapper” should do. He dropped an album that will later become the Template for hip-hop and rap albums, in Nigeria. That was “Talk About It”.

In the early 2000s, Rugged Man breathe fresh air to rap with his single “Ehen”. SauceKid came also, as one of the underground’s that rocked. There was Mode9, Elajoe, Terry Tha Rapman, provingthat the rap game is actually alive, in Nigeria. But, all of ’em lacked one thing.. Of course, they did successful albums, but none could give the original “template,” the format, the way rap albums should be. What a rap album should look like. M.I helped them. Once, he stepped into the game, Everyone had to adjust. Rappers ran away from the game, going on long hiatus. M.I wasn’t Even officially part of a rap group or collective. He just came out of JTown, with his Loopy Music gang. That is, his brother, Jesse Jagz and Icey Prince. The rest is history!

“Talk About It” stands as the only reason we doubt M.I’s prowess, these days. You hear stuffs like, “M.I in those days was better than this.” While that’s not true, and contrary to what people think, the OG has really improved on his game, the album (Talk About It) was definitely M.I living ahead of his time.

From “Crowd Mentality” which stands as a “fun” type of song, to the braggadocious “Safe” with Djinee, to socio-political “Talk About It” and “Short Black Boy,” M.I Abaga exudes an element of supernatural endowment. Whether the album sold 30,000 copies in 5 minutes or in 5 hours, or 5 years, didn’t even matter, anymore. What holds water here is the fact that, even if the man continues dropping music, to name him the G.O.A.T, you’ll still have to refer to “Talk About It.”

In 2018, you can say he doesn’t deserve to be called best rapper or to be giving any Award, but ten years ago, when he got the “Next Rated” Award, everyone nodded. Even the haters couldn’t hum a word. Many years later, we’ll just have to “talk about it” more!!!

Before he died, the yoruba rapper, gave the best indigenous rap album, in Nigeria (C.E.O.) And one of the best hip-hop shii’s ever. He gave the real template of what real indigenous hip-hop should look like.

Infact, most rappers claiming “real hip-hop” today, have something in common with Dagrin – he never betrayed the culture, till his last breath. He doesn’t sing and whenever he’s on beats other than the common hip-hop beats, he raps his soul out, to convince us that the beat notwithstanding, it’s a rap record.

The legend also did some of the best collabos hip-hop would ever have. “Ghetto Dreams,” have one of the best vocals on a rap record, ever, rendered by his producer, Sossick. “Thank God,” has Omawumi, the best vocalist in the country at that time. And it’s one of those hip-hop/gospel shii’s. That wasn’t all he did, anyway. On “Condo,” he showed us how playful a rapper can get, and he at least did a commercial shii. All that from his CEO album (considered as one of the
best albums of the last decade.) BUT, the highlight was … Pon Pon Pon!

Mo lenu bi pon pon pon pon pon pon.

Before Olamide surfaced at all, Dagrin was the voice of the streets.

“Pon Pon Pon,” a revolutionary record for hip-hop, was the song that ushered in the Era we are in now. The Era indigenous rappers will beat all these English rappers, pants down. 2009, and 2010, Pon Pon Pon was
so hot, everybody could sing along to the jam.

The song talks about the streets generally, and it boosted Dagrin’s street cred. “Omo Naija ni mi, ibe l’on bi mi si// Naija ni mo ti bere sini ka ABC// Omo Naija, mo le feyin shi pepsi.” The rhymes were regular, his flow was bool and calm. So cool you can hear everything he was saying clearly. And, it was all over Nigeria.

The instrumental went on to be a classic. Go to any rap battle arena, and just ask for Dagrin’s beat. You’ll get that sick beat.

It was a song that changed the scene, and prepared it for Olamide, and the new wave of rappers that followed after his demise.

So sad, he didn’t live to enjoy the movement he paved the way for, as he passed on, on April 22 2010 in an auto-crash. BUT, he did “Pon Pon Pon,” and TBH, without any prejudice this is Naija’s best rap song ever. “Crowd Mentality,” “Eni Duro,” “Ehen” and “Elbow Room,” should goan queue.

R.I.P Dagrin !!!

While you may know him for a couple of songs (Death Blow, Cry, Elbow Room etc), you may know him better as the rapper that kept taking the “Lyricist On The Roll” plaque at The Headies. At a time, he had to ask if there was no other person.

You may, however, know him best as the man that murdered Rugged Man, in that epic beef, which led to the biggest beef song, in Nigeria’s hip hop history. He literally murdered Ruggedy, and in that sense got compared to the Almighty Nas.

Whichever way you know him better, the truth is, Mode9 is one of the greatest rappers

He came onto the scene, first as part of the hip-hop group SWAT Roots, prominent in the early 2000s. He hit limelight, as a solo act, with his 2006 single “Elbow Room,”  which made him a name, amongst hip hop heads. It’s considered Naija hip-hop’s most lyrical till date. His single, “Cry” also off his debut album; “E’ Pluribus Unum,” put him in the mainstream, even with the deep content of the song. His peak might have been shorter if not for the beef with Rugged Man, which got everyone talking. However, Ruggedy Baba was getting all the spotlight, with a whole album taking shots at him.

Although Nigerians have succeeded in sending the 41-year-old rapper packing from the industry, he’ll forever be idolized in Nigeria’s hip-hop. He already said he’s done putting out albums in Nigeria.

Whether he’s your favourite rapper, or not, Modenine remains a relevant part of Nigerian hip-hop. And the history won’t be complete without him. You can only forget him, you can never ever evict him from the history!

While his last effort, “Authentic” (his fourth studio album), might not be as big as some albums released by veterans, lately, it is actually authentic, and on it the Abia-native puts on the whole of Africa (once again). With collaborations with artists, far and wide. There was Ycee, Vector, Koffi, Phyno, Ferre Gola, Waje, Zoro and DJ Arafat. Showing just how good J. Martins is at collabos, and Embracing Africa. Songs like “Ekelebe,” “Ikwusigo” and “Dance 4 Me,” still made waves, that year, anyway.

Born Martins Okechukwu Joshua, the 40-year-old is a veteran, and although he’s been popular before then, he got serious with this music thing with his 2008 debut, “Get Serious,” which spun many hits including his popular “Good Or Bad.” That album announced him, and made everyone take him serious.

In his decade-long professional career, he’s made a number of hits, including “Oyoyo,” “Cool Temper,” “Jukpa” and “Good Or Bad.” And even tho’ Wizkid‘s number of hits might dwarf his, his impact on the music scene, and the pop culture can’t be overlooked.

History will have it that, long before there was Adekunle Gold, there was an Igbo man who did urban highlife. And above all embraced the African heritage (before Yemi Alade was Mama Afrique). He is a UN Ambassador for peace, too. His name, J. Martins!

Mike is one artist I really loved in my childhood days. His ‘dodo ati rice’ track never failed to tickle my mumu button. I was mostly placated by my dad with this song. Mike was undoubtedly one of the hottest musicians that bestrode the musical turf since his debut LP ‘Concert Fever’ in 1988. At the peak of his career, he was also one of the highest paid acts in the land.

In the mid-90s the music world in Nigeria began to go through a significant transitioning and Mike Okri was one of the musicians whose musical fortune changed. As a result of this, he decided to relocate to the United States of America. Which is what most artists did at the time.

Mike didn’t bath in gold when he got to America as opposed to what many people thought, rumours soon began to circulate as to the real nature of business the Urhobo born musician was into. While some said he was a janitor at some super market, others claimed he was doing odd jobs to survive.

The legend however responded to the speculations, speaking on the reason he moved to the States from his California base, the singer said “It’s hard to say in one single word why I left but in my own words, I’m here in the States because God wanted me to [be]. Nigeria is strongly on my mind and I will be home soon but I’m preparing to do it right so others could benefit immensely. I’m overwhelmed with shows here, including book & music projects, not to mention school (he refused to comment further on his school details). [I have] been a busy bee and I thank God for that.” He also had a few words for fans who have been eagerly awaiting something new. “I will be releasing my comeback album soon, which will be a gospel one, while the next one will be inspirational. That is going to be my new style of keeping my fans around the globe busy when the time comes.”

But by the 2000s, Mike made a surprise appearance in a musical video alongside Sauce Kid. The legend has also been respected by younger folks who perform some of his songs on large music platforms e.g MTN Project Fame West Africa.

‘I’m catching cold o’ I am not exactly catching cold, this is just a line from Singer Tunde Ednut’s break out single, Catching cold.

Tunde Ednut was born in the northern part of the country, Katstina precisely on January 20, decades ago to a family of 5. The singer who hails from Kogi state is the first son and second child of the family. He got the name Ednut by spelling Tunde backwards.

Tunde began his University education in Nigeria at the University of Lagos before proceeding to Kingsland University of London where he studied Graphics Arts.

While abroad, Tunde Ednut delved into the entertainment industry as a comedian and was once one of the most popular stand-up acts in the UK but on his return to Nigeria he began pursuing a career in music.

He’s made some hits which include ‘Catching Cold’, ‘Baby Boo’, ‘Jingle Bell Bell’ and the likes.

The singer hasn’t necessarily kept a clean slate tho.. He once got into a theft scandal after music producer, Shizzy accused him of ‘stealing’ his beat for recently released single, ‘Kosowo’ and a few years back he had a fallout with a fellow singer, YQ.

Olumuyiwa Osinuga

Nomoreloss started his career in the entertainment industry first as a rapper, then he became a standup comedian before eventually delving into singing. During his lifetime he was opportuned to be a student of the great men in music, Kunle Ajayi and OJB Jezreel. No wonder, he was the campaign leader for the ‘Save OJB’ campaign, which sought for funds for the then ill producer who was battling with kidney disorder.

Nomoreloss came to limelight when he did a remix of Orlando Owoh’s 80s hit, ‘Iyawo Olele’ which he titled ‘Iyawo Asiko’. He also served as a jugde on MTN-sponsored West African Project Fame for two seasons between 2010 and 2012.

The singer got married to popular Rhythm FM OAP Phoenix (Adeola Osinuga) in 2008 and welcomed their daughter in January 2011.

Sadly, Nomoreloss died on the 21^st of March 2016 after being diagnosed with Typhoid fever.
