The qualified African teams are Senegal, Morocco, Egypt, Ghana, Algeria, Tunisia, Ivory Coast, Cape Verde, South Africa, and DR Congo. Nine teams earned direct qualification as group winners, while DR Congo secured their spot through the intercontinental playoffs.

This expanded representation gives African teams a stronger platform to compete for top honors while also showcasing emerging talents on a global stage. Scouts, clubs, and fans worldwide will be watching closely, potentially opening doors for many players to secure moves to top leagues.

AFCON 2025 Drama: CAS Breaks Silence on Senegal vs Morocco Case

In a statement released on Wednesday, CAS confirmed that it has formally registered an appeal submitted by Senegal’s football federation against both the Confederation of African Football and Morocco. The appeal challenges CAF’s earlier decision to strip Senegal of their AFCON 2025 title and instead award Morocco a 3–0 victory.

At the heart of the case is CAF’s ruling from March 17, 2026, which declared Senegal to have forfeited the final. Through this new appeal, the Senegalese federation is pushing for that decision to be overturned and for Senegal to be reinstated as champions. They have also asked for more time to file their full legal arguments, stating that they are yet to receive the detailed reasoning behind CAF’s verdict.

The controversy stems from the dramatic final played on January 18 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. Senegal had originally secured a 1–0 win in extra time, but the match was overshadowed by a tense moment late in regulation time when the team staged a 14-minute walkout after a penalty was awarded against them. Morocco, however, failed to convert the spot kick, and Senegal went on to score the decisive goal through Pape Gueye.

Following the match, Morocco appealed, and on January 29, CAF’s Appeal Board ruled in their favour. The board cited Articles 82 and 84 of the AFCON Regulations, concluding that Senegal’s actions warranted a forfeiture, and officially recorded the result as a 3–0 win for Morocco.

The decision sparked outrage from Senegal’s camp, with the federation branding it a “travesty” lacking any legal basis. Secretary General Abdoulaye Seydou Sow made their stance clear, insisting: “We will not back down. The truth is on Senegal’s side, the law is on Senegal’s side.”

Senegal’s case is expected to hinge on interpretations of the Laws of the Game. Their argument centres on the idea that the incident falls under “field-of-play matters,” which are typically within the sole authority of the referee under Article 5—meaning the outcome of the match should not be altered after the fact, even if the penalty decision was controversial.

CAS has confirmed that an arbitral panel will now be set up to review the case and determine the next steps. However, with Senegal requesting a delay in submitting their full appeal, the timeline for proceedings remains uncertain.

In the meantime, CAF has already updated its official records, listing Morocco as AFCON 2025 champions and Senegal as runners-up.

As the case unfolds, it is being closely followed across African football, with many seeing it as a defining moment that could shape how disputes—and even match results—are handled off the pitch in the future.

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has taken a dramatic and unexpected turn, with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) officially handing the title to Morocco following a controversial appeal decision.

What was initially celebrated as a hard-fought triumph for Senegal has now been reversed, rewriting the narrative of one of the tournament’s most intense finals in recent memory.

The final, played earlier in the year, saw Senegal secure a narrow 1–0 win over Morocco after extra time in a fiercely contested clash. However, the match was marred by tension during a crucial VAR decision, when Senegalese players protested a penalty call and briefly walked off the pitch.

That moment, which seemed like a passing incident at the time, would later become the centrepiece of the controversy. Morocco subsequently lodged an official complaint, asking CAF to review the circumstances surrounding the disruption.

After weeks of review, CAF’s Appeal Board ruled that Senegal’s temporary walk-off amounted to a breach of competition regulations. Acting in line with its disciplinary code, the governing body imposed a strict sanction.

As a result, the match was awarded to Morocco as a 3–0 forfeit, effectively handing them the AFCON 2025 trophy. The decision not only overturns the original result but also delivers a historic continental title to Morocco, sparking celebrations among their supporters.

Meanwhile, the fallout is far from over. Senegal are expected to challenge the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, setting the stage for a legal battle that could further prolong the controversy.

The incident is already being described as one of the most contentious moments in African football history, underlining both the growing impact of VAR decisions and the importance of discipline at the highest level of the game.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has handed down multiple sanctions against the football federations of Senegal and Morocco, while confirming a five-month suspension for Senegalese coach Pape Thiaw following the dramatic incidents at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final in Morocco.

The final, held in Rabat, descended into chaos for over fifteen minutes as Senegal threatened to abandon the pitch in protest of refereeing decisions by Congolese official Jean-Jacques Ndala Ngambo.

The controversy peaked when Morocco was awarded a late penalty after a VAR review. However, goalkeeper Edouard Mendy brilliantly denied Brahim Diaz’s panenka attempt, pushing the match into extra time.

The decisive moment came just three minutes into extra time when Pape Gueye struck a stunning left-footed goal from the edge of the box, securing Senegal’s second AFCON title.

CAF’s disciplinary action focused on Thiaw, who was caught instructing his players to head back to the locker room after Morocco’s penalty.

“To suspend Pape Thiaw, the head coach of the Senegalese national team, for five (5) official CAF matches for his unsporting conduct in violation of the CAF Disciplinary Code principles of fair play and integrity and for bringing the game into disrepute, and also fined USD 100,000,” read the CAF statement.

Thiaw’s suspension will cover the AFCON 2027 qualifiers, but he remains eligible to lead Senegal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the Lions of Teranga are in Group I with France, Norway, and the winners of intercontinental playoffs between Bolivia, Suriname, and Iraq.

CAF also sanctioned Senegalese players Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr, suspending them for two matches each for unsporting behaviour toward the referee.

The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) wasn’t spared either, facing fines totaling USD 615,000 for various breaches:

USD 300,000 for improper conduct of supporters

USD 300,000 for unsporting behaviour of players and technical staff

USD 15,000 for cautions received by five players

Morocco also faced penalties. Defender Achraf Hakimi received a two-match ban, with one match suspended for a year, while Ismael Saibari was handed a three-match suspension and fined USD 100,000. The Federation Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF) was fined USD 200,000 for ball boys’ misconduct and USD 100,000 for improper conduct by players and staff who interfered with the VAR review.

Finally, CAF dismissed Morocco’s protest alleging violations by Senegal under Articles 82 and 84 of the AFCON regulations, officially reaffirming Senegal as 2025 AFCON champions.

Morocco forward Brahim Diaz has issued an emotional apology after his missed penalty proved decisive in his country’s 1-0 defeat to Senegal in the Africa Cup of Nations final on Sunday, admitting his “soul hurts” over the moment that denied Morocco a long-awaited continental title.

The dramatic incident came deep into stoppage time in Rabat, when Morocco were awarded a penalty in the 98th minute after Diaz was brought down by defender El Hadji Malick Diouf. The decision, confirmed following a Video Assistant Referee review, sparked chaotic scenes both on the pitch and in the stands.

Senegal players briefly walked off in protest, encouraged by head coach Pape Bouna Thiaw, and it took more than 14 minutes for order to be restored.

When play eventually resumed, Diaz stepped up and attempted a Panenka-style penalty, but the weak chip was comfortably gathered by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

The miss turned out to be a pivotal moment, as the match went into extra time before Pape Gueye struck the winning goal to hand Senegal the trophy.

Taking responsibility for the outcome, Diaz wrote on X:
“Yesterday I failed, and I take full responsibility and apologise with all my heart.

“It will be hard for me to recover because this wound does not heal easily, but I will try. Not for myself, but for all who believed in me and for all who suffered with me.

“I will keep going until someday I can give back all this love and be a pride for my Moroccan people.”

The 26-year-old, who plays for Real Madrid, was born in Malaga and previously represented Spain before switching allegiance to Morocco in 2024.

Despite the painful finale, Diaz enjoyed an outstanding tournament, finishing as the top scorer at AFCON 2025 after finding the net in each of Morocco’s first five matches.

Morocco’s quest for a first Africa Cup of Nations title since 1976 will now stretch on, with their 50-year wait set to continue until at least the 2027 tournament.

A wave of emotions swept through social media on Wednesday night after a video surfaced showing popular Nigerian singer Teniola Apata, professionally known as Teni, breaking down in tears following the Super Eagles’ exit from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Nigeria’s campaign came to a painful end after the Super Eagles fell 4–2 on penalties to host nation Morocco in their AFCON semi-final clash at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, Rabat.

The encounter ended goalless after 120 minutes of intense football, forcing the contest to be decided from the spot.

Although the scoreline suggested a balanced contest, Morocco largely controlled proceedings, registering 16 goal attempts compared to Nigeria’s two.

Still, the Super Eagles stayed alive thanks to an inspired performance from goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who matched Moroccan shot-stopper Yassine Bounou save for save during regulation time and extra time.

Nigeria’s attacking duo of Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman struggled to find space against a well-organised Moroccan defence. The hosts were marshalled superbly by captain Achraf Hakimi at right-back, with Noussair Mazraoui equally influential on the opposite flank, combining defensive solidity with attacking thrust.

With neither side able to find a breakthrough, penalties followed, and it was Morocco who held their nerve. Youssef En-Nesyri stepped up to convert the winning kick, sealing a place in the final for the Atlas Lions.

Nigeria’s hopes faded after Samuel Chukwueze missed his effort and Bruno Onyemaechi was denied, while Paul Onuachu and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru were the only Super Eagles players to score from the spot.

As fans across the country struggled to process the heartbreak, Teni’s reaction quickly became a talking point online. In a video shared on her Instagram page, the singer was seen crying uncontrollably, leaning beside an elderly security guard as she vented her frustration over Nigeria’s penalty miss.

Clearly emotional, Teni appeared particularly upset with Chukwueze’s penalty, openly expressing her displeasure in the clip. She captioned the video with a mix of humour and anger, writing:

“CHUKWUEZE I SWEAR MAKE I NO JUST TALK😡 YOU GO SEE ME FOR DREAM THIS NIGHT.”

Morocco will now face Senegal in Sunday’s final as they chase only their second AFCON title, having last won the tournament in 1976. Nigeria, meanwhile, must regroup quickly as it prepares for Saturday’s third-place playoff against Egypt, which narrowly lost to Senegal in the other semi-final.

For many fans, celebrities included, the defeat was more than just a football result, and Teni’s emotional reaction captured the heartbreak felt by millions across the country.

Nigeria entered the tournament with renewed confidence, aiming to overcome the disappointment of the 2023 AFCON final loss in Côte d’Ivoire and the painful failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

However, that dream came to an end after the Super Eagles fell to the host nation in a tense encounter decided by penalties.

Speaking after the match, Chelle admitted that his side did not hit the same heights they had shown earlier in the competition.

While he refused to blame fatigue, the Franco-Malian coach acknowledged a noticeable dip in technical sharpness and intensity at key moments of the game.

“Our technicality was not like the same from last match. I don’t want to say we were tired but that’s not the level.”

Chelle explained that Nigeria struggled to impose themselves the way they had done in previous matches, stressing that small margins and decision-making ultimately worked against his team on the night.

Despite the loss, the coach was full of praise for his players’ attitude and fighting spirit. He noted that the Super Eagles showed resilience and commitment, battling until the final whistle in what was always going to be a difficult contest against the host nation.

He also addressed questions surrounding his tactical calls, particularly during the penalty shootout, insisting that his decisions were based strictly on what he saw in training.

On the penalties, Chelle said:

“We put Chukwueze for penalties because the guys who kicked the penalties were the best in training. The match was never easy, but the players showed strong mentality and fought for every ball. We worked hard throughout the tournament. This is football, and we must continue working.”

According to Chelle, penalty shootouts are unpredictable and should not be used to judge a team’s overall performance or commitment across the competition.

Looking ahead, the Super Eagles coach emphasised the need to regroup quickly as attention shifts to the third-place playoff, while also hinting that discussions regarding his future with the national team will take place after the tournament.

For now, Chelle insists the focus remains on finishing the AFCON campaign strongly and taking lessons from a tournament that once again came down to the finest of margins.

Afrobeats megastar Davido has once again shown massive faith in the Super Eagles, and this time, he’s put serious money behind it.

Ahead of Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 semi-final clash against host nation Morocco, the singer revealed that he placed a ₦71 million bet on the Super Eagles to secure victory.

AFCON 2025: Davido Goes Big on Nigeria With ₦71m Bet

The highly anticipated encounter takes place tonight, January 14, 2025, at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, with kickoff set for 9 PM.

Nigeria have been one of the standout teams of the tournament so far, cruising through the competition with an unbeaten record and scoring more goals than any other side. Their dominant run has clearly inspired confidence beyond the pitch, including from Davido himself.

Taking to his Instagram page, the award-winning artiste shared a betting slip from global gambling platform Stake, confirming he staked $50,000 (approximately ₦71 million) on the Super Eagles to defeat Morocco.

The bet was placed on 6 odds, covering:

Nigeria to win

Both teams to score

Over 1.5 total goals

A scoreline like 2–1 in Nigeria’s favour would comfortably land the bet.

If the Super Eagles pull it off, Davido stands to cash out a whopping $348,274.07, which translates to about ₦495 million.

Adding extra spice to the moment, Davido hinted he’s ready to go even bigger if Nigeria reach the final. He wrote:

“Nigeria to make the finals and I’ll double my stake on my slip…. 💰 @stake.”

The winner of tonight’s clash will book a spot in the AFCON 2025 final, where either Egypt or Senegal awaits.

For Davido and millions of Nigerian fans, it’s all eyes on Rabat football, faith, and fortune on the line.

Afrobeats star Joeboy has added extra drama to Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 semi-final showdown with Morocco, not on the pitch, but with his wallet.

As anticipation builds ahead of Wednesday’s clash, the stakes have clearly spilt beyond football. Following a trend set earlier by fellow superstar Davido, Joeboy has reportedly placed a ₦5 million bet on the Super Eagles to overcome host nation Morocco and book a place in the final.

AFCON 2025: Joeboy Bets Big on Nigeria Semi-Final game vs. Morocco

The “Alcohol” crooner, who is known for his bold interest in sports betting, shared a snapshot of the wager on social media, making it clear he has full faith in Nigeria’s ability to quieten the home crowd in Rabat.

For Joeboy, it is not just a show of support; it is a statement of confidence in the team’s unbeaten run at the tournament.

This is not unfamiliar territory for the singer. Joeboy’s betting adventures have often made headlines, swinging between big wins and very public losses. In April 2025, he went viral after losing ₦3 million on a UEFA Champions League fixture in which he backed Real Madrid to overcome Arsenal, a gamble that ended in what fans jokingly described as “premium tears.”

His latest wager now joins a growing list of high-profile financial backing for the Super Eagles as they chase continental glory. Davido recently revealed that he staked around ₦36 million (approximately $25,000) on Nigeria’s opening AFCON fixtures, while BUA Group chairman Abdul Samad Rabiu raised the stakes even further by pledging a $500,000 bonus if Nigeria defeat Morocco, along with an extra $50,000 for every goal scored.

On the pitch, Nigeria have given fans plenty of reasons to believe. The Super Eagles are yet to lose a match at AFCON 2025 and arrive at the semi-final full of confidence after a 2–0 victory over Algeria in the quarter-finals. Morocco, however, will pose a serious test, backed by a passionate home crowd at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.

Should Nigeria emerge victorious, Joeboy is expected to cash out a figure estimated at around ₦11 million. But beyond the money, the bigger prize would be celebrating Nigeria’s first AFCON final appearance since 2023, a moment that would make the gamble more than worth it for the singer and millions of Super Eagles supporters worldwide.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially unveiled the full fixture list for the Round of 16 at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025, following the conclusion of the group-stage battles.

The knockout phase is set to kick off on Saturday, January 3, and run through Tuesday, January 6, with two matches scheduled daily at 5:00 pm and 8:00 pm (local time), according to details published on CAF’s official website on Wednesday.

The round of 16 will burst into life on Saturday as 2021 champions Senegal square up against Sudan at the Grand Stade de Tangier, marking the first do-or-die encounter of the tournament. Later that evening, Mali will lock horns with Tunisia in Casablanca, with Mali hoping to move closer to a maiden AFCON crown, while the North Africans aim to relive the glory of their lone triumph in 2004.

Attention will shift to Sunday, when host nation Morocco faces Tanzania at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdellah in Rabat. The Atlas Lions topped Group A, while Tanzania snuck into the knockout phase as one of the best third-placed teams from Group C.

Sunday night promises fireworks as South Africa battle Cameroon in Rabat, a clash layered with intrigue as Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos comes up against the Indomitable Lions— the very team he guided to AFCON success in 2017.

Egypt and Nigeria Enter the Fray

On Monday, seven-time champions Egypt will take on Benin in Agadir as the Pharaohs continue their quest for a first AFCON title since 2010.

Later that night, Nigeria, one of the most impressive sides in the group stage, will face Mozambique at the Complexe Sportif de Fès. The Super Eagles will be eyeing a deep run as they seek to go one better than their silver-medal finish at AFCON 2023.

The Round of 16 will wrap up on Tuesday, with Algeria clashing against DR Congo in Rabat before defending champions Côte d’Ivoire take on Burkina Faso in Marrakech, closing what promises to be a thrilling opening knockout round.

CAF also confirmed that the quarter-finals will hold on January 9 and 10, while the grand finale is scheduled for January 18 at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdellah in Rabat.

Football fans from Cairo to Cape Town are gearing up for a December like no other, as the 35th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025) prepares to take over Morocco.

The tournament kicks off Sunday, December 21, 2025. For nearly a month, six Moroccan cities Casablanca, Rabat, Tangier, Agadir, Marrakech, and Fez—will burst into colour, noise, and national pride until the final whistle on January 18, 2026.

And this year’s lineup? A continental buffet.
Twenty-four nations have secured their spots: Morocco (hosts), Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Algeria, DR Congo, Senegal, Egypt, Angola, Equatorial Guinea, Côte d’Ivoire, Uganda, South Africa, Gabon, Tunisia, Nigeria, Zambia, Mali, Zimbabwe, Comoros, Sudan, Benin, Tanzania, Botswana, and Mozambique.

With the stage set, the group fixtures tell their own story—fresh rivalries, old grudges, and a December packed with football drama.
Below is the full journey each team must navigate in the group stage of AFCON 2025.
