MI Abaga is widely recognized as one of Nigeria’s finest and most influential rappers, and his contributions to the Nigerian hip-hop scene have earned him acclaim both locally and internationally.

Furthermore, Ice Prince’s praise for veteran rapper Modenine as the best metaphorical rapper to ever exist highlights the impact and legacy of Modenine’s lyrical prowess in the Nigerian hip-hop landscape.

Ice Prince’s concerns about foreign record labels dominating the Nigerian music industry are shared by many artists and industry professionals. The global reach and resources of foreign labels can sometimes overshadow local talent, making it challenging for Nigerian artists to compete on an international scale.

His call for veteran music executives in Nigeria to step up indicates a desire for more support and opportunities for local talents to thrive in the music industry. Encouraging and nurturing local talent is essential for the growth and sustainability of the Nigerian music scene.

Overall, Ice Prince’s comments shed light on the dynamic and evolving nature of the Nigerian music industry, and his recognition of MI Abaga and Modenine’s contributions adds to the celebration of Nigerian hip-hop talent.

Ice Prince said; “I can put M.I next to any rapper in the world. He made us study the game a lot. He played a huge role in my life.

“Don’t see anybody that raps better than Mode 9 (Modenine) on planet earth. He is the best metaphorical rapper ever to exist”.

He added; “Our OGs like Obi Asika, Audu Maikori, Kenny Ogungbe and Segun Demuren need to have their foothold in the game. We need them as much as we need these international labels.”

These Nigerian artists have not only broken records beyond the of Nigeria but found themselves in the good books of the Guinness World Record.

Achieving Guinness World Records status has never been a small feat.

Due to fortitude and perseverance, both young and old Nigerians, like people from other countries throughout the world, are proud Guinness World Records holders.

Anyone can strive to be listed among the Guinness World Records holders for anything, regardless of age, gender, or race, as long as they are prepared to put in the necessary effort.

Here are Nigerian artists who are Guinness World Record holders:

MODENINE

Modenine

The Headies (formerly the Hip Hop World Awards), were inaugurated by Hip Hop World Magazine in 2006 to honour outstanding achievements in Nigerian music.
Celebrating the Classic Nigerian songs turning 15 years in 2022.

2007 was a pivotal time in the Nigerian Music industry. Its era saw artists like Asa, Timaya, 9ice drop their debut albums to critical and commercial acclaim.

In Nigeria, Mo Hits, the largest label at the time, released a first-of-its-kind label compilation album.

The project produced singles like “Booty call,” “Move your body,” and “Close to you,” with Don Jazzy, the country’s most prolific producer at the time, handling the majority of the production.

Much has changed in the industry in the 15 years since 2007. Nigerian music has progressed in leaps and bounds to the point where it can now be classified as mainstream music on a global scale.

While this is stunning, it would be negligent of anyone to overlook the amount of effort that went into getting the scene to where it is now.

The early and mid-2000s labour put in by artists, labels, and other business stakeholders is unquestionably what the scene is benefiting from now.

Here are some of the evergreen songs that would clock 15 years in 2022.

Kini Big Deal- Naeto C ft. Ikechukwu

Naeto C- Kini Big Deal

Naeto C had been around for a long before the release of “Kini Big Deal.”

This, however, was the song that revolutionized his life and the course of Nigerian commercial rap music.

Prior to this, rappers of the time were more concerned with the technical aspects of rapping, hence the commercial worth of their music was poor. Naeto proved that you can be a great rapper and write a terrific rap-pop song at the same time.

Hip-Hop in Africa has been a growing genre, evolving and finding its place in history; for M.I Abaga, it was more than just been the best but redefining a genre and leading a new reign of rappers.

Prior to M.I’s entrance into the music scene in 2006, the Nigerian Hip-Hop community had rappers like Ruggedman, Modenine, Eedris Abdulkareem, Eldee among others.

However, there was a switch that came with his entry into the Industry; the rap genre was beginning to enter a new phase that he would lead as its messiah.

When Jude ‘M.I’ Abaga released his Crowd Mentality single in 2006, he started his ascent into the list of Africa’s Best Rappers book.

Nigerian hip-hop heads applauded the novelty of his concept, the audacity of his humorous lyrics crammed into bars, and a fair dose of social satire.

While “Crowd Mentality” was the John the Baptist, wetting an already fertile soil, his Djinee-assisted “Safe” was the seed that blossomed into a fruitful venture for him.

His debut album, “Talk About It“, which was released on December 11, 2008, was an acknowledgement that the hip-hop torch held by Hip-Hop rulers such as Modenine and Ruggedman could be passed on to him.

That recognition showed itself in him winning Best Hip Hop and Best New Act at the 2009 MTV Africa Music Awards, as well as being nominated for Best International Act at the 2010 BET Awards the following year.

What would follow was a couple of projects, some of which are classics.

Impact and Evolution

You can’t mention Best African rappers without M.I Abaga

In 2010, M.I teamed up with Flavour on the Hip-Hop/Highlife tune, “Number One” where he bragged about his prowess and what makes him special.

When you look at his career overall and the impact he has had on Hip-Hop in Nigeria, his lyrics on that song hold some water.

With the release of his debut album “Talk About It“, the Nigerian Hip-Hop scene witnessed the birth of a new star and forever altered the Hip-hop scene in Nigeria.

The album not only put him on the radar, but it also helped him break into the elite class of rappers with a mean pen game and faultless delivery, cementing his status as one of the most influential rappers of all time.

“Talk About It” is the key to the glory age in terms of cultural effect, success, ground-breaking moments, and just challenging the status quo.

The album’s popularity paved the way for a new generation of rappers to enter the industry, confident that they could reach a larger, and more significantly, responsive audience with their music.

However, “Talk about It” wasn’t M.I’s last bus stop, it was more like a foundation- M.I followed up with several projects numbering about ten (3 Solo albums, 1 Compilation album, 4 Mixtapes, 2 EPs).

His evolution is also seen on every project where he keeps trying and experimenting and while sometimes this has caused some hitches, most of the time, it has earned him more fans and boosted his OG status.

One of these notable evolution was his sophomore album, “MI 2: The Movie” which was released in 2010. On This album, M.I plays the main protagonist of an action film one can liken to Tom Cruise’s “Mission Impossible.”

With features from 2Baba, Bola Adebisi, Brymo, Flavour, Ice Prince, Jesse Jagz, Julius Ceaser, Femi Odukoya, Loose Kaynon, Praiz, Ruby Gyang, Timaya and Waje, M.I had a lot to give and he didn’t disappoint.

On this album, M.I took on the cloak of different personas; the loverboy, the cocky prince of Hip-Hop, the activist amongst others.

Successes

M.I is not just a rapper but also a music genius who also helped contribute to the careers of the likes of Ice Prince, Jesse Jagz, Wizkid, Ruby Gyang, Brymo and others.

While signed under Chocolate City Records, he headed the record label from 2015 to 2019 as the CEO. In 2020, he announced his exit from the label and launched his own label, Incredible Music under which he is currently releasing music.

Thanks to his over 17 career awards including a nomination in the Best International Act category at the 2010 BET Awards, M.I is one of the most awarded African rappers of his time.

Described by many Nigerian hip hop fans as Nigeria’s “Hip Hop Messiah”, M.I has done a lot to bring not just to keep Hip Hop alive in a Pop dominated Industry but also to bring Northern presence to the South dominated Nigerian music industry.

M.I Abaga still magnificently at the forefront of Nigeria hip-hop since his debut.

M.I is one of the few artists that holds a record for longevity, with over 17 years of artistic life and still orchestrating the new rap culture, factually safe to be considered a legend in the Nigerian music industry.

Breaking out as early as 2006 with the launch of impressive rap, debuting cultural impacting album titled Talk About It, which was widely and intensely acclaimed.

M.I Abaga

It’s obvious that most Nigerian rappers would have been more respected if they were US or UK based, sadly but true perhaps language barriers stagnated crossover appeal.

The industry was controlled by the likes of Ruggedman, Modenine and Eedris Abdulkareem, before he arrived with a solid project and single titled ‘Safe’ which shake the airwaves, introducing something more clearer and relatable.

<iframe title="MI Abaga - Safe ft.
However, M.I’s role in the evolution of young Nigerian rap artists diverging focus on building up a new sonic export cannot be overstated.

Orchestrating in the form of modern rap was Obviously before the emergence of the digital streaming era and Internet exposure, yet still carving out space for other rappers in the broader hip-hop market.

Also, M.I Abaga consistently exploiting the waves with a unique style, lyrical prowess and stellar delivery with production that matched Nigerian western idols.

his message while rapping is always explanatory and story relatable which makes it easy for the audience.

Cobhams Asuquo has been into music for more than a decade; be it singing, writing songs, or producing, the man didn’t let his defect stop him.

He started as a music producer as far back as the early 2000s also doubling as a background singer for some of the artists he produced for.

It wasn’t until 2007 he became publicly known as a singer and performing artist when he featured on what became the wildly popular Nigerian campus favorite, Mo Like Jesu Gan by Dekunle Fuji.

Later on, he featured in the song’s music video, officially introducing himself to a very adoring Nigerian public and finally gaining some recognition. In 2008 he produced and dropped a verse on Lagimo which became another fan favorite, for the gospel duo Rooftop MCs.

In 2014, he released his debut hit single, Ordinary People which has gone to achieve status as a timeless classic.

The multi-talented singer clocked 39 years old on the 6th of January and to celebrate the music icon, mp3bullet.ng has compiled a list of songs you didn’t know were produced by him.

‘Not The Girl’ would forever be remembered as one of Darey‘s best timeless pieces. The emotional R&B love ballad sees Darey sing about the painful knowledge that his love interest’s heart no longer belongs to him.

The song is taken from Dare’s sophomore album ‘unDAREYted’ and was written by him and Cobhams.

Rooftops MCs- Lagimo

Rooftop MCs consisting of the duo, Soulsnatcha, and Sokleva came into the spotlight with their hit song, ‘Lagimo’ which ruled in airwaves from radio to television between 2007 and 2009, totally redefining what gospel music has been known to be prior to RoofTop MCs.

When roughly translated as a whole from Yoruba to English the chorus means, “if my head will swell up in pride, beat it back into humility”.

Cobhams apart from producing the song also featured on the song in which he dropped a powerful verse.

Modenine- Cry

‘Cry’ which features the soulful vocals of songstress Nnenna, is the second track on Modenine‘s 2007 album E’ Pluribus Unum released under Questionmark Entertainment.

‘Cry‘ is his most successful award-winning single to date. The song brought him on the radar of even non-hip hop listeners.

The song tells of two tragic stories, one of a new mother who becomes a widow the same day she gives birth and two friends turn archenemies due to being in rival gangs.

Cobhams and Asa both rose to international acclaim as a result of their collaboration on Asa’s platinum-selling debut album, “Asha“.

One notable song off that album is the Socio-political commentary song, “Jailer“. The song is a reflection of the political climate in Nigeria and the rest of the world.

It has also been interpreted to be a metaphorical commentary on how society has become prisons and some selected people have become ‘Jailers’. Cobhams is credited as a co-writer of the song.

“If You Ask Me (Na Who I Go Ask)“ is a soulful yet socially conscious track that tells the story of an abused child.

The song’s chorus which takes the call and response format has become a popular slang used on the street whenever someone is asked to narrate a befuddling story.

There’s has been various opinions flying around, some of the opinions supporting M.I Abaga to win the battle while others believe Naeto C is capable of matching M.I Abaga in a battle.

However people forget that despite the name given to the battle, this event is actually not a battle but a celebration of icons.

First of all, let me introduce you to the icons that will be giving us premium content on Sunday.

Jude Abaga popularly known by his stage name, M.I Abaga is a Nigerian rapper, songwriter, activist, and music producer. M.I Abaga came to the limelight after his song, “Crowd Mentality” became popular.

The rapper was signed to Chocolate City Music and the go on to become the Label’s CEO from 2015 to 2019. The rapper exited the label after thirteen years of being with them and launched his own record label, Incredible Music.

Naeto C whose real name Naetochukwu Chikwe is a record producer and a rapper. Naeto C‘s career started back from the university days where he met Ikechukwu and Uzikwendu and three rappers formed a group called the World Famous Akademy.

Naeto C got signed to Storms record under which he released two albums, “U Know my P” and “Super C reason”. He left the record in 2013 and was signed to Cerious Music where he released two more albums in 2015, “Day 1” and “Festival”.

DISCOGRAPHY

Numerically speaking, M.I Abaga has more projects to his name than Naeto C who has only four Albums released. M.I Abaga has Four albums, Four Mixtapes and playlistS, two EPs, and one compilation album which brings it to a total of nine projects so far.

However, this does not in any way bring down the value of Naeto C as the rapper has hit songs to his name. Naeto had “Kini Big Deal” in which he featured Ikechukwu, his critically acclaimed “Ten Over Ten” which he released after bagging a master’s degree in Energy Studies from the University of Dundee, Scotland and the rest.

M.I Abaga also has hits that span across the projects he has released. Songs like “Safe”, “Bad Belle”, his controversial “You Rappers should fix up your life”, “Monkey”, “Bullion Van” and his successful album, “MI 2; The Movie” gave the artist the success he enjoys today.

AWARDS

In terms of Awards, M.I Abaga also takes the lead. He has over nineteen awards and over twenty-one award nominations. He is one of the few Nigerian rappers who can boast of that level of success.

Naeto C has about three awards and two nominations for his career.

IMPACT ON THE RAP INDUSTRY

Impact wise, the two artists have contributed their share to the Rap culture in Nigeria. Rap before the era of M.I Abaga and Naeto C was ruled by artists like Modenine, Ruggedman, Eedris Abdulkareem, and being able to successfully launch their career was no small feat.

M.I Abaga was also responsible for the bringing out of artists like Wizkid, Phyno, Jesse Jagz, Ice Prince, Brymo amongst others.

Naeto C had a stan following, his dressing and mannerism set a trend that Future rappers would later inculcate.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Generally speaking both M.I Abaga and Naeto C have done well. From Awards to setting trends, dominating the rap industry, grooming young rappers, endorsement deals, Awards, the two rappers are icons who deserve to be celebrated.

The soundclash between them is not a battle but a celebration of two icons who came, saw and conquered in an industry that wasn’t as popular as Afrobeats in Nigeria.

What’s the occasion? No, it’s not another “Define Rap” and it’s not just subliminal shots anymore. Things seem to have gone out of hand, as both of them have now called each other’s name out, on separate diss tracks. And for many, it got interesting.

The history of friction between the two of them go way back beyond 2017’s You Rappers Should Fix Up Your Life, or Vector’s 2018 Cool FM interview.

That was just about the time it started getting serious. We’re talking of a rivalry that spans across a decade, a couple of albums, cyphers and guest verses. It’s just like Modenine vs Ruggedman. The only difference is, Modo and Ruggedy got into the booth quickly to settle the beef, by murdering each other. Besides, neither M.I or Vector seems to be as good as Mode9 was back then.

But how did the diss start in 2019 and how did it escalate? How did it become the platform on which Nigerian hip-hop is resurrecting on? Not such a long story, but one good enough to tell our kids, I suppose.

M.I Abaga was the first to go into the Studio, this year, taking multiple shots at Vector. Not just Vector, but also Hennessy. Hennessy, the popular cognac company, has been the main power behind the annual Hennessy Cyphers and VS Classes, which for many years (even years when M.I forsook the throne) was the only hope hip-hop and rap music in Nigeria had. Every year, new cool cats, usually underground guys come together and do something cool, cyphers that are usually refreshing and being the spirit alive.

M.I Abaga

In the last couple of years, though, we can say the quality of lyrical content and magic in these cyphers has declined. Most people didn’t care, the Nigerian economy has gone down, too, and no one is complaining. The state of the rap game has gone down rapidly, too. But M.I noticed, and wouldn’t keep shut about it. In his opinion, if he was the brand ambassador for Hennessy, the Cyphers would be better. That’s a lot to ask for, though, because Vector’s livelihood probably depended on his ambassadorship to Hennessy, since he’s not actively doing music.

When M.I got something going on with another brand Martell, who actually is not that much of a competition to Henny, when it comes to the business, it changed everything. He had a platform to school not only Vector and Hennessy but also everyone who was watching how it should be done. So, on the first-ever Cypher, he came in with his LAMB crew and did some bars. While A-Q and Blaqbonez were just trying to earn their bragging rights, Loose Kaynon, his deputy, took a couple of shots we believe were aimed at VEC and M.I did the same. “There’s no rapper I can beef with, I son ’em all…”

Vector Tha Viper

There was peace after that, relatively. But then the Hennessy Cyphers and it was much worse than before. Better aesthetics paid rappers, higher budget than before, apparently, but it was still lacking in content. And that opened the doorway for more criticism and shots at Vector tha Viper, the man who’s the face of the Hennessy Artistry, in Nigeria. A couple of Social Media kerfuffle happened, but it didn’t stick.

Not until Blaqbonez said he’s the best rapper in Africa, and other underground guys, mostly repping the Hennessy came for his head. It wasn’t long before the LAMB guys teamed up again and did the second coming of the Martell Cypher, called The Purification. On this one, M.I went straight for the heads of all the rappers, Vector especially and even those who went after Blaq.

That was what prompted Vector to pick Payper and Vader, two Hennessy guys with him for “The Purge” a track that dissed M.I, Blaq, Choc City and all M.I’s ‘dumb fans’. In about a week, Vector came in again with “Tetracycling”, a straight diss, which most people think is lightweight. That desperation gave M.I the opportunity to reply with fire, “The Viper” which detailed all of the Vector’s weaknesses and how he could correct them. Maybe it was just punchline, but The Chairman even offered to sign Vector.

Vector’s made it clear he’s going to reply when he tweeted that he wanted a beat for the response. The tweet started with “Lol” and that alone speaks a volume. No doubt, M.I is winning and probably will emerge victorious when this is all over, but should VEC have an edge over him, there’s no coming back from this because all of Vector’s shortcomings have already been used. He wouldn’t have anything else to say, in the event that Vector was to bring something to the table.

Whichever way it happens, this year it will all be settled. And what will be settled exactly? Nobody knows? Who the best rapper is? People will always take sides, for sure. Who is the greatest? Subjective, too. But after 2019, there’s a good chance the diss between Vector and M.I is over, for good!!

In other news, DMW boss and pop star, Davido is also making rounds for suggesting that his protege Dremo diss M.I Abaga. He did this, when Dremo who is currently embroiled in a war with DavoLee, posted a diss track on Instagram. “M.I next, please,” the Blow My Mind singer commented.

We’re not sure about what’s going to happen, though. And then, Blaqbonez has done his own diss track for Vector, “Exile.” Perhaps this will end as a Game of Thrones, where everyone in the industry has to take sides? If it goes down really, whose side are you gonn’ be on?

So VEC has Replied; Check Out The Editorial Here.

Probably ’cause of the charts, Awards, ratings, money, views, and all that. But, you can’t ignore the fact that whoever gets the G.O.A.T title is beating Modenine to it. Just how relevant the man is to the culture.

The Yoruba MC is a very intelligent rapper, whose lyricism is the core point of his game. He also has that dexterity in his flow that makes him one of the hardest in the game. While you may know him for a couple of songs (Death Blow, Cry, Elbow Room etc), you may know him better as the rapper that kept taking the “Lyricist On The Roll” plaque at The Headies. At a time, he had to ask if there was no other person.

You may, however, know him best as the man that murdered Rugged Man, in that epic beef, which led to the biggest beef song, in Nigeria’s hip hop history. He literally murdered Ruggedy, and in that sense got compared to the Almighty Nas.

Whichever way you know him better, the truth is, Mode9 is one of the greatest rappers
Just how relevant the man is to the culture.

You may, however, know him best as the man that murdered Rugged Man, in that epic beef, which led to the biggest beef song, in Nigeria’s hip hop history. He literally murdered Ruggedy, and in that sense got compared to the Almighty Nas.

Whichever way you know him better, the truth is, Mode9 is one of the greatest rappers to ever grab a microphone. And, the best in Africa, in terms of rap skills. The Nas comparison ain’t over-hype!

He came onto the scene, first as part of the hip-hop group SWAT Roots, prominent in the early 2000s. He hit limelight, as a solo act, with his 2006 single “Elbow Room,” which made him a name, amongst hip hop heads. It’s considered Naija hip-hop’s most lyrical till date. His single, “Cry” also off his debut album; “E’ Pluribus Unum,” put him in the mainstream, even with the deep content of the song. His peak might have been shorter if not for the beef with Rugged Man, which got everyone talking. However, Ruggedy Baba was getting all the spotlight, with a whole album taking shots at him.

Although Nigerians have succeeded in sending the 41-year-old rapper packing from the industry, he’ll forever be idolized in Nigeria’s hip-hop. He already said he’s done putting out albums in Nigeria.

Whether he’s your favourite rapper, or not, Modenine remains a relevant part of Nigerian hip-hop. And the history won’t be complete without him. You can only forget him, you can never ever evict him from the history!
