Nigerian rapper MI Abaga has expressed his profound admiration for hip-hop, describing it as the truest art form. In a recent episode of Pulse Fun Fact, the multi-award-winning artist was asked to choose his favorite genre among hip-hop, Afrobeats, and Amapiano.

Without hesitation, MI Abaga selected hip-hop as his favorite genre, placing Afrobeats in second place.

According to MI, hip-hop is the genre that has served as the foundation for many other musical styles. He referred to hip-hop as the deepest art form and described it as the love of his life, highlighting its significance in shaping his musical identity.

The early to mid 2000s were a good period for the Hip Hop community in Nigeria as a number of Nigerian rap songs came out and went mainstream.

Over the years, Nigerian hip-hop has gone through multiple periods with various actors and notable scenes.

Rap in Nigeria has advanced considerably. There have been songs that have changed the music industry, expanded its boundaries, and set new guidelines for rappers to follow. T

The music genre is more than just spitting out words after lines; it’s about recognizing the environment, identifying the needs of the audience, and meeting those needs.

The reason many rappers were such big hits back then was because of the energy they put into their songs.

The majority of them were anthems that people repeatedly sang and recited. Regrettably, the values that rap ought to promote have been losing ground in Nigeria.

The Nigerian music scene has been overshadowed by a growing love of Afrobeat and its many children sending rap into the background.

However, many millennials would remember some of these songs that at one point dominated the airwaves during the 2000s.

Cry – Mode 9 (2007)

Mode 9 is considered as the leading pioneer of hip-hop music in Nigeria after earning the prestigious Lyricist on the Roll award multiple times. Cry was one of the tracks that solidified his position on the A-list.

The song, which was taken from Mode 9‘s 2007 album E’ Pluribus Unum, features beautiful singing by Nnenna and powerful lyrics by Mode 9.

It gained widespread critical praise and topped charts across Africa, winning three Channel O music awards for hip-hop, among others. The hip-hop music culture in Nigeria still finds Mode 9′s Cry to be relevant many years later.

Baraje- Ruggedman

Released in 2005, from Ruggedman’s ‘Thy Album Come‘ project, Baraje was that song that was played in parties and clubs. Ruggedman was able to tell the truth even though the song was composed with upbeat music when he said:

“Get crazy when u hear this instrumental, and most definitely, my voice is fundamental. Na the essential ingredient wey dey make my people dem no want 2 see the end. I’m bad more than that…stay forever like culture. You better make a move cos I dey watch u like vulture.”

This song was a real blend of rap and club music from one of Nigeria’s top rap innovators.

Too Much – DJ Jimmy Jatt ft Blaise, Sasha P, Bouqui, Kemistry (2007)

The fact that there aren’t many female rappers in the music industry motivated the legendary DJ Jimmy Jatt to record a song with some of the established female rappers at that time.

In light of social norms, this song promoted the authority of a woman in a field dominated by men. When it was released in 2007, the song served as a platform for female rap artists to showcase their skills and lyrical prowess.

No be God (2008) – Gino

In this song, Gino discusses his difficulties and his unwavering faith that one day, his Creator will intervene and save him from his plight. Those on the bottom rung of the social ladder might readily relate to the song since it is pure motivation.

Anoti – M.I (2008)

M.I Abaga, hailed as one of the best lyricists in Nigeria, released Anoti from his first studio album, Talk About It, in 2008.

2Baba

Innocent Ujah Idibia, better known by his stage name 2Face Idibia or 2Baba (born in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria), is a Nigerian singer-songwriter, record producer, and entrepreneur.

Although he hails from the Idoma tribe in the southern part of Benue State, 2baba was born and grew up in Jos.

2Baba first started his music career as a member of the popular music group, Plantashun Boiz alongside Blackface and Faze.

After the group released two successful albums, they disbanded in 2004 giving the singer a chance to be signed with Kennis Music under which he released his debut solo album Face 2 Face.

With over two decades in the Industry, 2baba has earned a legendary status and is also one of Africa’s most bankable artists.

In 2015, he officially dropped the name 2face and switched to 2baba as his stage name. 2Baba is also the first winner of MTV Europe, Best African Act Award in 2015.

M.I Abaga

Jude Abaga, better known as M.I, was born in Jos, Plateau State. He attended Baptist High School, Jos where his mother purchased basic music notations and later, a 7-key mini piano which launched him into the music world.

Jude’s venture into the hip hop world started with the sampling of musical works from DMX and Lauryn Hill as early as 1998.

After returning to Nigeria from the US where he had gone to pursue a course in Business and Economics, M.I partnered with his friend Djinee to commence the production of mixtapes.

The two collaborated on the song “Safe” which received a certain level of popularity.

However, He rose to prominence in 2006 when his song “Crowd Mentality” became popular in Jos, Nigeria. He released his debut studio album Talk About It in 2008.

While in Jos, Nigeria, he teamed up with his brother, Jesse Jagz, Ice Prince, Ruby, Threadstone, Lindsay, Moses (Elbulk), E kelly to form Loopy Music.

M.I was later signed to the Chocolate City company, a renowned music label in Nigeria, which made him move from Jos city to the nation’s capital Abuja and also influenced the beginning of his successful career in the Nigerian music industry.

Abaga was CEO of Chocolate City from 2015 to 2019. In March 2020, he announced his exit from the label and launched his own record label Incredible Music.

In the course of his career, M.I has released 11 projects which include 4 studio albums, 1 compilation albums, 4 Mixtapes, 2 Eps.

He won Best Hip Hop and Best New Act at the 2009 MTV Africa Music Awards,[5] and was nominated in the Best International Act category at the BET Awards 2010.

P-square

Peter and Paul Okoye are twin brothers who were born in Jos, Plateau’s capital.

P-Square got its start at St. Murumba secondary school in Jos, Nigeria, a modest Catholic school.

Twins Peter and Paul began singing, dancing, and imitating songs by MC Hammer, Bobby Brown, and Michael Jackson when they joined their school’s music and acting club.

In 2001, P-Square” won the “Grab Da Mic” competition, and hence Benson & Hedges sponsored their debut album, titled Last Nite, which was released under Timbuk2 music label.

P-Square was also nominated as “Most Promising African Group” in the Kora Awards three months after the release of their debut album. They eventually won the 2003 Amen Award for “Best R&B Group”.

In 2005, they released their second album, Get Squared under their own label, Square Records. Four albums later, the group disbanded in 2017 due to irreconcilable differences.

The twin brothers decided to pursue solo careers going under the stage names, Rudeboy and Mr. P. while as a group, they dominated the African continent with their hit songs.

Bez

Bez, real name Emmanuel Bez Idakula, was born in the central Nigerian city of Jos in 1983. He was raised in a musical family, listening to gospel and country music.

He grew up in a musically inclined family, listening to gospel and country. As a child, he sang in choirs and began playing his father’s guitar at the age of nine.

Bez’s father, a politician and Gubernatorial Candidate for Nasarawa State in Nigeria died when he was twelve years old.

As a result, his family’s finances collapsed, and he was unable to pay the remainder of his high school tuition. His high school education was funded by an anonymous donor. He was also given assistance in paying his college costs.

Bez earned his bachelor’s degree from Covenant University, a prestigious institution.

In 2012, Bez released his album, “Super Sun” and the project includes the single “That Stupid Song” which features Praiz. In 206, he released his second album, Gbagyi Child.

He was the first African artist to world premiere his music video on BET after the music video of “That Stupid Song“, premiered on the renowned BET’s 106 & Park and the first Nigerian artist to do a solo show at the iTunes store in Soho, New York.

Ice Prince

Ice Prince was born Panshak Henri Zamani in the city of Minna, Niger State, Nigeria.

He relocated to Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria, with his family when he was two years old. He attended St. Murumba College in Jos while living there. He also went to Jos’ Science Tutorial College.

He began writing rap songs and started performing them while in school. In 2002, he and some friends formed the “ECOMOG Squad” but split after a year.

In 2004, he connected with M.I, Jesse Jagz, Ruby, Lindsey, Eve, Taz, and together they became what is now known today as the “Loopy Crew”

After he was signed to Chocolate City, He rose to fame after releasing “Oleku“, one of Nigeria’s most remixed songs of all time.

In 2011, he released his first studio album, Everybody Loves Ice Prince, then released his sophomore album, “Fire of Zamani“, then his third studio album, Jos To The World in 2016 after leaving Chocolate City.

Jesse Jagz

Jesse Jagz was born in the chilly city of Jos to Chris and Lydia Abaga in 1984. His father is a pastor and his mother is a gospel artist and counsellor. He joined his church’s choir at the age of seven and later learned to play the drums on his parents’ drum kit.

He started his career with the Gospel Insanity band. Unfortunately, due to a squabble among the band members, the record was never released.

After that, Jesse began professionally producing beats and founded another group, Eleven Thirty; they enjoyed local success in Jos before disbanding in 2006.

He teamed up with his brother Jude Abaga, a.k.a. M.I, in 2004 to form Inner Hub Studios.

Jesse Jagz released his debut studio album Jag of All Tradez on 21 April 2010. It included the singles “Wetin Dey”, “Pump It Up”, “Jesse Swag”, “Sugar Cane Baby” and “Bend Down Low“. The album was produced entirely by Jesse Jagz.

In March 2013, Jesse Jagz announced his voluntary exit from Chocolate City and the launch of his own independent outfit Jagz Nation.

Apart from being a great artist, Jesse Jagz has produced songs for several artists, including Majek Fashek, M.I Abaga, Banky W, Ice Prince, Mode 9, Proverb and Dekunle Fuji.

Omah Lay

Omah Lay made his major breakthrough in the industry in 2020 with “You“. When he released his debut EP, “Get Layd” he proved he was here to stay.

Phyno

Phyno is one of Nigeria’s biggest Indigenous rappers whose songs have amassed millions of streams over the years.

He started his music career as a producer in 2003 and is renowned for rapping in the Igbo language.

Phyno developed an interest in music production during his secondary school days and began producing because the Highlife producers in the East could produce the kind of Hip-Hop beats he wanted.

The rapper rose to stardom after he released “Ghost Mode” featuring Olamide in 2012. Thanks to his several hit songs Phyno is still one of Nigeria’s biggest artists to date.

Davido

Davido is one of Nigeria music royalty but not many know he started out as a producer.

Despite the fact that David Adeleke has never been credited with a successful song for another singer, Davido, as he is affectionately known, has a long list of hit songs to his credit.

He used to produce and previously produced a single called ‘Open Pooner‘ for Dammy Krane.

His breakthrough song, “Dami Duro” was first produced by him before Shizzi reworked it. He also produced an unreleased song for one of his artists, Peruzzi which is titled “Gaza.

Jesse Jagz

One of the most intelligent artists in the Industry, Jesse Garba Abaga, better known by his stage name Jesse Jagz, is a Nigerian hip hop artist.

He re-signed with Chocolate City in April 2015, after leaving the label in May 2012 to start his own brand, Jagz Nation.

He began his career as a producer, but he refused to settle for less, so he moved on to music. Jesse Jagz has a few songs under his belt and is unquestionably one of today’s most brilliant musicians.

Jesse Jagz has produced songs for several artists, including Majek Fashek, M.I Abaga, Banky W, Ice Prince, Mode 9, and Proverb and Dekunle Fuji.

Terry G

Terry G once ruled the streets of Lagos with his eccentric and unique of music. The “Gingah your Swagger” had people dancing to his dance hits.

Nigeria is officially the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is a country in West Africa, and here are the top 10 states in Nigeria that produce the best musician.

It is the most populous country in Africa and in Sub-Saharan Africa before South Africa, Kenya, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Ethiopia; geographically situated between the Sahel to the north, and the Gulf of Guinea to the south in the Atlantic Ocean; covering an area of 923,769 kilometers (574,003 mi), with a population of over 211 million.

Opinion 

First and foremost, to be able to analyze the top 10 states in Nigeria that produce the best music, it has to be regionalized and refined by the number of mainstream artists in the Nigerian music industry produced by the state.

Shout out to another genre of traditional music and instrumentation, but then, this post revolves around mainstream contemporaries.

So! which region in Nigeria produces the best musicians?  I’m from the Southeast, and as much as I love our beloved Chief Osita Osadebe, I have to say those Yoruba artists have been giving everyone else a run for their money for way too long

If we’re talking of contemporary Naija music in genres like hip-hop, rap, and R&B, it is an understatement to say the Southwest part of Naija top the chart of quality musical artists but, to be more precise, the Middle-belt region with states like Benue, Plateau, Nassarawa and the FCT, in particular, are also inclusive, Southeast holds very tight too.

In summary, Nigerians are great talented people!

Ogun State

Ogun State is a state in southwestern Nigeria, Created in February 1976 from the former Western State.

Ogun State has numerous mainstream artists in the Nigerian music industry, which includes Fela Kuti Olamide, Wizkid, D’banj,  Reminisce, Kizz Daniel, Zlatan ibile, Laycon, Vector, etc.

The conflict usually begins when an artist believes he or she should be receiving more attention than their peers, or when envy and greed are present.

Mallam Spicey- 1005 Naira

When you look back on Terry G’s career, you’ll see one major blunder: putting Mallam Spicey to the test with the lyric “me I no be Mallam Spicey, Me I no dey stop for the fourth bar over.”

in response, Mallam Spicey dropped one of the hottest and most blatant diss tunes ever in Nigeria on Terry G.

“1005 Naira (Free Cure)” was recorded entirely on the beat of Terry G’s hit “Free Madness” and was followed by a video ridiculing Terry G.

Unfortunately, we didn’t get to hear much from Mallam Spicey after this.

Tony Tetuila created the mega-hit “Omode Meta” released around 1999 after quitting the Remedies, which was a diss track directed at former group mates Eddy Montana and Eedris Adbulkareem.

Tony Tetuila featured 2baba(2face Idibia), Blackface, and Ruff, Rugged & Raw, a rap group. This is one of the most well-known songs from Nigeria’s hip-hop history’s early years.

If you are surprised to see this song on this list, then you haven’t listened to the lyrics. After going on a Social media pilgrimage for months, Davido returned to the scene with “Fem.”

The song was a hit, not just because of its beat but because of its lyrics. Certain lyrics like “Tell odogwu say we like to party” suggested that the song was a medium to throw shots at Burna Boy who he allegedly had issues with.

Furthermore, the song would go on to be a protest anthem during the revolutionary 2020 #Endsars protests where protesters used it to hush Government Officials trying to talk to them.

Ruggedman exploded onto the scene with no regard for anyone’s face, and it showed in his epic diss tune, “Ehen!”.

He came out swinging for the industry’s prominent stars at the time. Eedris Abdulkareem, Maintain, and Rasqui were all impacted by what Ruggedy Baba was dishing out.

That catapulted him to a new level in Nigerian hip-hop at the time, and he garnered a sizable fanbase as a result.

The Song was a Hit and changed the Nigeria Rap scene.

He’s dissed Kennis Music, MI, Ice Prince, and Jesse Jagz, but none of those diss singles compares to “Igwe (Kom Kom)”, a masterpiece he created to diss Don Jazzy, Dbanj, Wande Coal (Mo-Hits at the time), and Terry G.

The song is still one of the funniest jabs at a whole record label in Nigerian history. Thrown in the hilarious makeshift animation video, and we have something that will always be remembered for years to come.

Wande Coal- Who Born this Maga

Wande Coal was the sole member of the defunct Mo Hits to answer to Kelly’s diss with his “Who Born the Maga” track off the M2M album, which featured Kayswitch as a guest artist. Wande Coal directed the video.

That’s what M.I was up against in 2010, when Iceberg Slim and Kelly Hansome, among others, took separate swings at him.

M.I’s reaction wasn’t a natural one. Instead, as the astute businessman that he is, he responded to both of them, as well as a slew of others, in his song Beef, which was released alongside his album MI2.

9ice ft Seriki- Talk I am Listening

Ruggedman has been the subject of a number of diss songs, and it’s easy to see why.

There was controversy in 2010 between Ruggedman, 9ice, and Toni Payne (9ice’s wife at the time), which resulted in a leaked conversation, a barrage of accusations, and a slew of diss recordings.

But, of all the diss songs that have been released, this one has taken the cake.

With the help of Seriki, 9ice fully reversed the script on Ruggedman (his one-time mentor). It helped expose Seriki to the Nigerian hip-hop scene in certain ways.

Ruggedman eventually replied to the diss with “A Word Is Enuff For The 9ice” before the two went on to settle their differences and collaborate on several songs.

As a matter of fact, in all the versions combined, I’m sure his verse is in most people’s top 3. No wonder he’s always a welcome guest when it comes to all-star features.

Ijeoma feat. Vector – Love In The Air

“Love In The Air” was my best Christmas song by a Nigerian artist last year. It should be no surprise that Vector‘s presence made a very emphatic impact.

With the wordplay and the way he related with listeners in both verses, he proved that he’s a versatile rapper and can give his unique touch to any type of song regardless of its topic.

The video was directed by DuduToonz.

Laylow feat. Iceberg Slim, CartiAir, Liu T, Mode Nine, Terry Tha Rapman, Skales, Vector, DaGrin, Ludu & Gino – Meet Me At The Top

Once again, another all-star cast of rappers was called to the table and Vector was one of them.

This song featured as many as ten artists, each with their own individual style and fan base.

And, though this was not one of Vector‘s best verses, he still managed to stand out in the multitude. The video was directed by Patrick Elis.

Vector feat. 9ice – Angeli

This Clarence Peters-directed video was full of special effects and awesome visuals that would keep you glued to the screen even if you didn’t like the song.

“Angeli” also called upon 9ice whose voice was even mixed into the production for the song.

Vector once again showed his versatility with production and content; add little bits of 9ice here and there into his verses in this catchy tune.

After she is diagnosed with H.I.V she finds herself and redirects her steps, going forward to help others and sensitize the youth on abstinence and responsibility.

Omawumi took this song as an opportunity to speak on some of the hidden perversion existing in modern society.

A typical example is a story she tells of a family consisting of a father, mother, and daughter who sees the mother travel, and Omawumi noticing questionable activities between the father and daughter.

of course, the presentation of the subject matter is a bit amusing, but she calls attention to the disturbing habit of some fathers molesting and also impregnating their own daughters.

Mode 9’s Monalisa of Song is one of the most powerful Nigerian hip-hop songs of all time which tells two different stories with each first.

Verse 1: the story of university sweethearts who got married, but the husband went on to become a drunk and the wife was home and miserable. She got pregnant and on her delivery date, the drunken husband drove in a rush to meet her and got into an accident, leaving his wife a widow and the newborn baby boy fatherless.

Verse 2: Tells the story of two childhood friends ending up in the same university but joining two different rival cults. The gang rivalry flung them against each other and when there was an eventual showdown, they both died by each other’s trigger fingers. This verse will literally give you chills when you listen.

Timaya- Dem Mama

The Odi Massacre was a mass killing in Odi, Bayelsa state where civilians were killed by the military in response to a high tension conflict involving oil resources.

As Timaya tells it, civilians were raped and killed, children were victims as well as parents of children who were orphaned.

Dem Mama had vibrant beats and a heavy tempo, making it sound like a club banger (which it actually was), but the message was a tragic report of the violence that tore families apart and claimed lives.

PSquare- Oga Police

PSquare came through on this one to speak the minds of the average Nigerian who has experienced Police harassment either as a motorist or as a local beer and Nkwobi joint customer.

Verse 1: Crusing down the road with a chic in the passenger seat and police tries to cramp your style and harrass you for paper.

Verse 2: Chilling at the joint with homies from abroad while chics are ordering Isi Ewu and Turkey and the cops come through on buzzkill patrol.

Following the death of eastern Nigerian artist MC Loph, Flavour who was a friend and affiliate released the tribute single where he expresses his personal grief and that of MC Loph’s family.

He narrates the story of Loph traveling to the east with his brother as they took a new car home to their mother.

The heartbreaking vocals and the deep lyrics that state the consolation Flavour offered to Loph’s mother, make this one of the deepest Nigerian songs of all time
