Nigerian rapper MI Abaga has expressed his profound admiration for hip-hop, describing it as the truest art form. In a recent episode of Pulse Fun Fact, the multi-award-winning artist was asked to choose his favorite genre among hip-hop, Afrobeats, and Amapiano.

Without hesitation, MI Abaga selected hip-hop as his favorite genre, placing Afrobeats in second place.

According to MI, hip-hop is the genre that has served as the foundation for many other musical styles. He referred to hip-hop as the deepest art form and described it as the love of his life, highlighting its significance in shaping his musical identity.

Hip-hop holds a significant place in the rich tapestry of Nigerian music history, boasting a cadre of top-class rappers who have left an indelible mark on the industry. Icons such as Eedris Abdulkareem, Ruggedman, Mode 9, M.I, Ice Prince, Naeto C, Dagrin, and Olamide have played pivotal roles in popularizing hip-hop within Nigeria.

In the realm of Afrobeats, hip-hop stands as one of the foundational genres, influencing the early sounds of groups like The Remedies, Trybesmen, and Plantashun Boiz. These pioneering acts drew inspiration from hip-hop elements, infusing them into their music and contributing to the development of Afrobeats as we know it today.

Furthermore, rap music has transcended geographical boundaries, becoming domesticated in various parts of the world. Its influence extends far beyond traditional hip-hop realms, feeding into and shaping a multitude of genres that borrow from its rhythmic and lyrical elements. This cross-pollination has resulted in the evolution of diverse musical styles, showcasing the universal appeal and enduring impact of hip-hop culture worldwide.

The early to mid 2000s were a good period for the Hip Hop community in Nigeria as a number of Nigerian rap songs came out and went mainstream.

Over the years, Nigerian hip-hop has gone through multiple periods with various actors and notable scenes.

Rap in Nigeria has advanced considerably. There have been songs that have changed the music industry, expanded its boundaries, and set new guidelines for rappers to follow. T

The music genre is more than just spitting out words after lines; it’s about recognizing the environment, identifying the needs of the audience, and meeting those needs.

The reason many rappers were such big hits back then was because of the energy they put into their songs.

The majority of them were anthems that people repeatedly sang and recited. Regrettably, the values that rap ought to promote have been losing ground in Nigeria.

The Nigerian music scene has been overshadowed by a growing love of Afrobeat and its many children sending rap into the background.

However, many millennials would remember some of these songs that at one point dominated the airwaves during the 2000s.

Mode 9 is considered as the leading pioneer of hip-hop music in Nigeria after earning the prestigious Lyricist on the Roll award multiple times. Cry was one of the tracks that solidified his position on the A-list.

The song, which was taken from Mode 9‘s 2007 album E’ Pluribus Unum, features beautiful singing by Nnenna and powerful lyrics by Mode 9.

It gained widespread critical praise and topped charts across Africa, winning three Channel O music awards for hip-hop, among others. The hip-hop music culture in Nigeria still finds Mode 9′s Cry to be relevant many years later.

He used to produce and previously produced a single called ‘Open Pooner‘ for Dammy Krane.

His breakthrough song, “Dami Duro” was first produced by him before Shizzi reworked it. He also produced an unreleased song for one of his artists, Peruzzi which is titled “Gaza.

These are the top 10 states in Nigeria that produce the best musician according to the number of mainstream artists they produce in the space of popular music.

Nigeria is officially the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is a country in West Africa, and here are the top 10 states in Nigeria that produce the best musician.

It is the most populous country in Africa and in Sub-Saharan Africa before South Africa, Kenya, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Ethiopia; geographically situated between the Sahel to the north, and the Gulf of Guinea to the south in the Atlantic Ocean; covering an area of 923,769 kilometers (574,003 mi), with a population of over 211 million.

Nigeria Flag

Opinion

First and foremost, to be able to analyze the top 10 states in Nigeria that produce the best music, it has to be regionalized and refined by the number of mainstream artists in the Nigerian music industry produced by the state.

Shout out to another genre of traditional music and instrumentation, but then, this post revolves around mainstream contemporaries.

So! which region in Nigeria produces the best musicians? I’m from the Southeast, and as much as I love our beloved Chief Osita Osadebe, I have to say those Yoruba artists have been giving everyone else a run for their money for way too long

If we’re talking of contemporary Naija music in genres like hip-hop, rap, and R&B, it is an understatement to say the Southwest part of Naija top the chart of quality musical artists but, to be more precise, the Middle-belt region with states like Benue, Plateau, Nassarawa and the FCT, in particular, are also inclusive, Southeast holds very tight too.

In summary, Nigerians are great talented people!

If you are surprised to see this song on this list, then you haven’t listened to the lyrics.
The song was a hit, not just because of its beat but because of its lyrics. Certain lyrics like “Tell odogwu say we like to party” suggested that the song was a medium to throw shots at Burna Boy who he allegedly had issues with.

Furthermore, the song would go on to be a protest anthem during the revolutionary 2020 #Endsars protests where protesters used it to hush Government Officials trying to talk to them.

Ruggedman has been the subject of a number of diss songs, and it’s easy to see why.

There was controversy in 2010 between Ruggedman, 9ice, and Toni Payne (9ice’s wife at the time), which resulted in a leaked conversation, a barrage of accusations, and a slew of diss recordings.

But, of all the diss songs that have been released, this one has taken the cake.

With the help of Seriki, 9ice fully reversed the script on Ruggedman (his one-time mentor). It helped expose Seriki to the Nigerian hip-hop scene in certain ways.

Ruggedman eventually replied to the diss with “A Word Is Enuff For The 9ice” before the two went on to settle their differences and collaborate on several songs.

The music industry is filled with loads of talents, it’s certainly one of the few hardest industries to crack a hit from!

Nigeria, being the most populated country in Africa also carries one of the largest numbers of aspiring and successful musicians.

As a matter of fact, the competitions vary from the numerous genres sung in the country.

The hip-hop genre which is our focus started gaining momentum over two decades ago, going down the Mode 9, Rugged Man, Eedris Abdulkareem, days, and many more.

Upon arrival into the Nigerian borders, the genre took on the form of its founders in the USA and so, it was usually rap music in English.

However, amongst them was a young rapper by the name, Lord of Ajasa who took it upon himself to establish the indigenous rap game.

Under him erupted the likes of Reminisce, Da Grin (late), 9ice, and also Olamide.

Olamide being the youngest to taste stardom took great advantage of his and became one of the most unique rappers in Nigeria and Africa at large.

His debut hit tune, “Eni Duro” paved the way for the street sensation and solidified his spot at the big table.

Although, he started off as an underground rapper and was involved in rap street battles.

His story however changed when he met Lord Of Ajasa and became a protege under the veteran.

Since then, the rapper has released back-to-back tunes with 12 studio albums to his career.

Many would agree more fans for rap music in the western part of the country tuned in love for Nigerian rap songs because of Olamide.

He successfully made it a thing everyone could flow with, even if you do not understand the lyrics.

Being versatile, he is one of the few who have adopted the style of singing and rapping at the same time.

His blend of taking up a chorus and adding a rap rhythm to his songs increased his fanbase and certainly his relevance.

Categorically, Olamide emerges as one of the most influential Nigerian rappers and this he has built over the years.

This is really not a debate, as his “works have proven him”!

Going by the widespread of street sensations such as; Naira Marley, Zlatan, Lil Kesh, Bella Shmurda, and many more, Olamide‘s imprint into their journey of fame cannot be overemphasized.

Another great difference between Olamide and other rappers is the number of awards he has bagged.

With over 40 nominations, Olamide has won well over 20 awards and this includes; City People Entertainment, The Headies, MTV Africa, and many more. Arguably, this one top feat from an indigenous Nigerian rapper.

Also, in his career, he has bagged many ambassadorial deals such as Guinness, Monster, Tekno, and many more.

Like him, not many rappers in Nigeria have as many deals as this. This further proves his worth in the game.

Conclusion

Olamide is a great force whose worth is unmatched. Certainly, he came, he saw, and he conquered!!!

Some of you may be wondering why we chose Vector for this week’s installment but the answer to that question, “Why Vector?” is actually very simple.

For those who haven’t noticed, Vector Tha Viper (real name Olanrewaju Ogunmefun) has been on a lot of features ever since last year.

Vector

And, it came to our notice that in Vector‘s case, familiarity does not breed contempt because rather than water down his talent on a feature, he takes the challenge upon himself to outshine his counterpart as well as trump his previous performance.

Vector

Nonetheless, Vector is a good lyricist, so we decided this week’s BNMusic Friday Top 5 be made up of songs that Vector graced, but not alone. Here are the Top 5 of songs featuring Vector:

Vector feat. 2Face Idibia – Get Down

This collaboration, for me, was the pivot of Vector‘s career; from reigning underground new kid on the block to the mainstream must-hear artist.

But “Get Down” wasn’t just a track that 2Face Idibia featured on, it was a smash hit and the H-Code produced song went on to get syndicated well on the radio.

The video of the song just solidified its ground as a successful transition for Vector and with Vector‘s epic wordplay and 2face‘s killer hook, there’s no wonder as to why this is number one. The video was directed by Clarence Peters.

Ijeoma feat. Vector – Love In The Air

“Love In The Air” was my best Christmas song by a Nigerian artist last year. It should be no surprise that Vector‘s presence made a very emphatic impact.

Vector
