He’s the real OG and every album since his 2011 debut “Rapsodi” has been an addition to his now-classic catalog, an improvement on his artistry and a testament that nobody’s got nothing on him.

Even the recent ones that are not critically sound as you’d expect from a don like Olamide (“Lagos Nawa”, “The Glory”) are not light, in the sense of it. When it is time to do hip-hop, Olamide won’t ‘carry’ last. And either he’s gyrating or just bouncing on some sick afrobeat, you just know this is someone that knows what he’s doing.

I don’t think there’s anyone who drops singles like Olamide either. He drops hits, every now and then and he’s not even going to add them to his next album like most artists would. He’s got more than enough. The streets will say “o por, it’s plenty.”

Olamide 999 EP Review

We weren’t expecting “999” or a new Olamide album, not in February anyway. Last year, 2019, the YBNL boss didn’t drop any project, making it the first in seven years that he didn’t drop at least one album. In 2018, he still put out the YBNL Mafia Mixtape and appeared on it, multiple times.

So “999” is like a revival, whatever. And that’s the point, he didn’t have to hype this. The music should hype themselves. People should decide if they still want to listen to Olamide in 2020, or maybe his music is now boring to their ears. Let’s evaluate, then!

The album (or as they call it, EP) starts with “No Time”, a hip-hop track where Olamide just spits some rhymes, definitely no storyline whatsoever, but it’s not a miss. His voice isn’t the same as before, studio work, maybe? It’s definitely not a befitting intro for an Olamide project.

Olamide 999 EP

The progression into bassy electronic hip-hop instrumental by Pheelz is magical. Phyno rapped hard, better when he was saying English, but doesn’t really matter. Rhatti and Snow had their shine. It was enough to convince us they’re good guys.

“Billion Talk” featured Olamide’s son, Milli’s voice and started on a high note. The beat is trap hip-hop, and Olamide wasn’t really dropping anything unconventional. Just normal auto-tuned voice and a catchy hook. “Money sweet like candy” after all.

Three other songs had features, “Dance With The Devil” with Sosa-E and Jackmillz, “Demons” with Jackmillz and “Mojo” featuring Jayboi. Olamide is one of the big guys that puts up-and-coming artists on in this industry, so yeah, it’s not too much of a surprise. What is surprising however is how all these guys are rappers. I meant who’s gonna say Olamide is not doing enough for the culture?

“Wonma” which circulated a day before the release is kinda like the highlight of the Extended Play and well, honestly, it is very vulgar and people who speak Yoruba already complained. Although it’s more funny that it is ‘stupid’. Olamide just doing his thing. What’s even crazy is how most people will hear the song, laugh and then say “it’s true sha.”

The last two tracks on the project, “Prophesy” and “Rich & Famous” are also hip-hop. On “Prophecy” he rapped, did a hook, nothing we’ve not heard before. “Rich and Famous” is like it’s Lil Wayne. I’d say nothing we’ve not heard before, but that will be boring, like some of the songs on the album.

You’d think if Olamide was going to do an album after all those street songs, “Choko Milo”, “Oil and Gas”, “Pawon” and “Gobe”, it was going to be streetical. But here we are, listening to Olamide doing hip-hop like it’s ’11. Olamide for President!

Rating: 4/5 (Smoking!)

It’s not a punchline or wordplay battle, this is more. It’s not just a game of thrones, it’s chess of personalities, where someone’s life might end up wrecked, at the end. Or could there be a stalemate?

M I took the lead, this year, by firing the first shots, on the Cyphers and on multiple occasions VEC, one of Yoruba’s finest rappers, took L’s, as M.I trumped him, not just with lyrical capabilities but by also bringing morals to question.

Truth be told, Vector the Viper’s career and path and everything has become more and more demystified, to a level of ‘see finish’. So what we did when M.I Abaga did “The Viper” was nothing but just watching the body drop, as Pusha T put it. Blaqbonez too weighed in, and for what it’s worth, it’s just to restate on whose side he’s on. Not that it really was impossible in any way. M.I already did the finishing touches, but the whole thing wasn’t just gonna’ go away. Not at this point where it’s got dirty.

Does “Judas The Rat” answer all the questions M.I raised about VEC?

On “The Viper”, Jude questioned Vector’s involvement in other people’s upliftment and called him ‘jealous’.

But you know how Davolee said he knew Dremo would say he (Davo) didn’t make Baddo any money (not a pun) and that he said it first, so when Dremo says it, it wouldn’t move him an inch? Well, there are a lot of things M.I couldn’t say first.

“I’m the only number one, in the 234” Vector started. The man always liked reminding himself (or maybe us?) that he’s actually good, and he’s not a fluke whatever. But, on a diss track, after things have got bloody already, we don’t care if you’re number one or N6, just drop something that will make us take a deep breath, immediately after a deep sigh.

Vector Tha Viper

So, Vector dived in, starting from an obvious point of view. Jesse Jagz. M.I could go tomorrow and do a video of him and his blood brother, Jesse, chilling at the Choc City lounge. That wouldn’t clear our minds, and won’t answer the question “why didn’t it all work out?” Jesse was a talented rapper, and that’s right, it’s a ‘was’. Jesse Jagz had a hit with Wizkid. Remind me, what does he have with M.I? Does he have a career? But that’s obvious. He then talked about the CC mess, and oh my, there’s a Brymo. Dice Ailes was a good rapper, too. VEC even made a pun out of Milli, saying the Chairman wasted him.

So, what about all the questions M.I raised about him? How he didn’t sign anybody. OK, VEC said he put on two guys out of the three he’s parading (Blaqbonez, A-Q) and all for free. Whoa. Vector did do that though. So what do you want him to do? “Sign a man I wouldn’t sign?” Mad.

M.I Abaga

The way of the Lord is not to do everything for gain, I’d suppose. Vector insists that’s all M.I has done. “The only light in the video was black (Blaq)”. Another point, M.I Abaga uses youngins to shine, only to dump them later.

If “The Viper” raised any question about Vector’s personality, Yoruba has got a win this time, because “Judas The Rat” isn’t just a bitter track about the Choc City boss, it also answers all the questions. And then the facts that we didn’t know. So Abaga had the Hennessy job? And, Vector’s a single dad? He said he succeeded in life!

Plus, everyone he mentioned is currently trending. If Ambode drops a track now, he go blow. That’s what I heard. LOL, right? Exactly!

Meanwhile, you can read how it all started here.

Is Blaqbonez the Best Rapper in Africa? On paper, big no. But then we look at it and we’re like “why the hell not?”

For starters, there is absolutely no one that has ever taken the VS Class and is as big as Blaqbonez today. Hennessy doesn’t put anyone on the kid’s level, so I guess we could just squash the beef talks and move to a more interesting topic. Best rapper in Africa?

In the past couple of months after his “You Rapper Should Fix Up Your Life” reply, he’s gone up the ranks and unless you think hip-hop is Davido and Wizkid (my pastor does), you will know that Blaq is not just one of the guys keeping hip-hop alive. He’s kinda like the only one.

He’s got an album, produced by M.I Abaga, and last year, he could have got the “Best New Rap Act” if there was any category like that. And a number of singles, and collaborations, and freestyles and that.

Perhaps the Chocolate City co-sign was what shot him up to his current status. But, it takes way more than that to become a successful rapper. You can take it from a guy who watched Milli and Pryse‘s career never take off.

A-Q and Loose Kaynon too, yeah. But that was also a bet. They were just betting on him, maybe for the future. A year and a half ago, we didn’t know he wasn’t going to become a one-hit-wonder, or worse, a no-hit wonder. But he defied all that when he got Nasty C saying he’s fire, and that was because he’s actually fire.

His rap prowess cannot carry a question mark, we all know what the big nigga is capable of. His lyrical prowess, as he’s showcased on many tracks (“Martell Cypher”, “BRIA”, “), and his killer versatility. Today he could be trapping (“Off Black”) and tomorrow, he’s a pop star (“PLAY”, “Mamiwota”). It’s not every day you find just any underground rapper who’s that good.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B0iZqUHB3vv/

But, he’s not even underground. He may not be Fireboy or T Classic, but when it comes to hip-hop, Blaqbonez is probably Africa’s best shot at having a prince. And consistently, he’s proven himself to be better than everyone else who has tried to stick their heads up. He is on the Big League.

BEST RAPPER IN AFRICA #BRIA!!!

now you gon learn to just keep quiet and watch me work! 😈https://t.co/BIMpPZFFQc pic.twitter.com/QCAatywENU
— Emeka Must Shine ‘23 ✨ (@BlaqBonez) July 30, 2019

And since he’s saying it himself, perhaps he’s the current best rapper in Africa. Seriously, the lyrics, the charisma, the platform, the album, and yeah I’m like, why the hell not? At least, he’s not a flop!

The song, featuring former Choc boi – Milli and Gospel singer – Nosa, was released via his Instagram TV and Mr. Jude Abaga came correct on this one as always. It’s worthy to note that the video, which was shot in 2015 but wasn’t released due to a fall out between him, his brothers and business partners.

He wrote; “I am looking 4 talented hardworking self motivated people 2 work at CC.. we have opportunities in promotions, A&R and Business development..”

To apply, all you have to do is send a mail to jude@chocolatecitymusic.com with a brief bio and your CV. BTW, you’ll be talking to M.I personally with that mail.

Chocolate City Music, is the home to fast-rising talented artists like CKay, Koker, Dice Ailes and Yung L. Ice Prince, Jesse Jagz, Brymo, Milli and Pryse used to be signed there.

Meanwhile, M.I recently headlined The Basement Gig to showcase his new album; “Rendezvous.” The album has the likes of Terry Apala, BlaqBonez, Ckay and Joules Da Kid as guests.

Milli also wanted to open up the fan horizon a bit, so that girls don’t think he only makes music for guys, hehe. While Wickedest is really something completely different from Don’t Ask Me What Happened, if you liked “The Hood” on the EP, then this one shouldn’t come as a total surprise.

Wickedest is for the girls. I believe Milli somehow managed to make a track that would appeal to a MUCH wider audience, without selling out.

While signed to Chocolate City, the highly rated 23-year-old artist and songwriter was preparing the release of his first body of work, the Childish EP, which never dropped.

Instead of Childish, Milli has released Don’t Ask Me What Happened today, an EP with seven tracks, five new ones in addition to “Unlooking Uncensored” and “Animals After Dark”.

Don’t Ask Me What Happened is distinctly New School. The EP features some strong Hip-Hop and some dark Rap, alongside tracks that include more lofty R&B vibes; but it’s Milli’s signature Trap-influenced New School sound that is the key common denominator across all songs.

While Don’t Ask Me What Happened is Milli’s artistic way of getting over the label break-up and coming to terms with the industry, don’t expect any bashings or tell-all songs, however. Rather, Milli’s EP is setting out to make a point that there is an emerging New School sound in Nigeria, and that the versatile singer, rapper, co-producer and leader of the Up Next Movement is truly about setting his Art free, without wanting to be limited to one particular genre.

Milli is featuring the 20-year-old PatricKxxLee on two tracks, the up and coming Zambian rapper and producer, who many refer to as “Africa’s Travis Scott”, and who is also the main producer of the Don’t Ask Me What Happened EP. Apart from “Unlooking Uncensored”, which was produced by CKay and Reinhard, the EP also features an opening and a closing track produced by Surulere beatmaker Beats By Jayy.

The original Pidgin version was first released in November 2015 when Milli was still signed to Choc City, but following his premature exit from the label, the rapper made an uncensored edit of the track, changing all verses to English and making direct references to his experience at Choc City under label boss M.I. Both versions are produced by CKay and Reinhard.

The music video to Unlooking Uncensored, which is a short film that’s shot entirely in black and white with cinematic widescreen cropping, will be released on June 12.
