The Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) has unveiled the six-player shortlist for the 2023/24 Young Player of the Year award. This prestigious award is open to footballers aged 21 and under at the start of the season, with the winner being chosen by votes from active PFA union members.

Bukayo Saka, who won the 2022/23 award, is in the running to defend his title after being nominated again for the following season. Saka, who turned 22 in September 2023, just made the age cut-off by one month.

The Arsenal winger had another stellar season, contributing 16 goals and nine assists in 35 Premier League games as Arsenal finished as runners-up to Manchester City for the second consecutive year.

Manchester United has two players on the shortlist: Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho. Garnacho, already a key member of the first team, registered seven goals and four assists across 36 appearances.

Meanwhile, Mainoo had a breakout season after recovering from an ankle injury, scoring three goals and providing one assist in 24 games from midfield.

Cole Palmer is another strong contender for the award after a remarkable debut season with Chelsea. He delivered 33 goal involvements—22 goals and 11 assists—in just 33 matches, marking him as one of the frontrunners.

Brighton & Hove Albion forward Joao Pedro, one of the two nominees not from a traditional ‘big six’ club, impressed after his summer move from Watford. He played 31 games for the Seagulls, netting nine goals and providing three assists.

The final nominee, Michael Olise, now with Bayern Munich, earned his place on the shortlist following a standout final season with Crystal Palace. Despite playing only 19 games, Olise managed to score ten goals and provide six assists before his move to Germany in July.

The winners of the PFA awards will be announced on August 20.

Bayern Munich are set to sign Michael Olise after the Crystal Palace winger decided to join the Bundesliga giants.

Earlier this month, Bayern, Chelsea, and Newcastle all expressed their interest in the 22-year-old.

Negotiations for Olise were expected to be complex due to his release clause, which is reportedly around £60 million, with portions of any transfer fee owed to Crystal Palace, the player himself, and his former club Reading.

Chelsea had concerns about the overall cost of the deal. Last summer, they attempted to sign the France Under-21 international for approximately £35 million, believing they had activated his release clause, but the move was unsuccessful.

Olise subsequently signed a new four-year contract with Crystal Palace, extending his stay until 2027. He has been selected for the France squad for the Paris Olympics, which begin in July.

Last season, Olise scored 10 goals in 19 appearances for Palace, despite missing several games due to a hamstring injury. Manchester United had also shown interest in Olise but are currently focusing on targets in other positions.

Michael Olise is said to have signed a new contract with Crystal Palace after Chelsea withdrew their offer as the Eagles mulled taking legal action.

After the Stamford Bridge club apparently activated Olise’s £35 million ($45 million) release clause this week, it appeared that he would be moving to Chelsea.

The 21-year-old did, however, agree to a brand-new, four-year contract with Palace on Thursday.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Eagles considered going to a tribunal with Chelsea over their approach for the France Under-21 international – something they were reportedly unhappy about. As a result, the west London outfit pulled out of a move and Olise extended his stay at Selhurst Park.

In the summer transfer market, Chelsea has mostly prevailed.

While they had to pay more than they expected for Brighton’s Moises Caicedo and are set to beat Liverpool to Southampton’s Romeo Lavia, the midfielders cost a combined £173 million ($221 million).

They have also recouped more than £200 million ($255 million) in player exits in the last month or so, but Olise is one player who escaped.

Both teams have until September 1 to bolster their rosters because the transfer window is still open.
