Paying Tribute to someone or people who are dead isn’t a strange concept in the Nigerian Music Industry as there are artists who use their songs to express how they feel about the situation.

The 20th of October 2021 marks the one year anniversary of the Lekki Tollgate shooting and many people are in their feelings about the traumatic incident.

To ease the mood, we compiled a list of Nigerian Tribute Songs That still hit hard to date

Tribute to Dagrin(My Pain)- Naija All Stars

On April 22, 2010, the Nigerian music world/country as a whole lost a great legend, Olaitan Oladapo Olaonipekun a.k.a. Dagrin. After a gruesome car accident, he passed away.

This traumatic event spawned a song, which went on to become Nigeria’s most popular tribute song.

Artists such as Eldee, Sheyman, Reminisce, Durella, Banky W, Waje, Omawumi, Ruggedman, Lord of Ajasa, Posley, and others collaborated on the song ‘Tribute To Dagrin.’ For months and years to follow, the Hip Hop-based ballad topped charts and hearts.

Ashes- M.I Abaga

This song is dedicated to four University of Port Harcourt students who were killed by a mob on October 5, 2012. The horrible occurrence elicited a variety of reactions, but MI’s effort stands out.

You could hear the hurt hidden in the words in between M.I’s inquiries for everyone concerned, the society’s tolerance for such sins, and the dark mood set from the beginning of the song brought to the fore with spoken-word-style narration.

Olorun Mi – Tiwa Savage

Many hearts and earphones couldn’t thank Tiwa Savage enough for recording a memorial song for all the great we’ve lost over the years.

With this song, Tiwa gives a whole new meaning to tributes, and the video for the same song is nothing short of heavenly.

To this day, the song is one of the few that both young and old can sing word for word… Let’s just say Tiwa brought her A-game on this single with her voice.

Iwe- Flavour Nabania [Tribute To MC Loph]

Prior to his death in 2011, MC Loph was known to have a strong friendship with celebrity vocalist, Flavour. It was unsurprising when Flavour dropped a tribute in honour of the Igbo rapper.

The song titled ‘Iwe‘ saw the highly sought after Flavour simply let out his emotions, resulting in millions of hearts flocking to his side.

20.10.20- Burna Boy

Burna Boy has garnered fans thanks to his songs which are either love themed or talking about a socio-political problem facing Africa. However, he won hearts after dropping “20.10.20“, a song dedicated to the lives lost at the October 20 Lekki Tollgate shooting.

The Nigerian army had opened fire at innocent citizens protesting against police brutality at the Lekki Tollgate which led to outrage not just in the Country but outside the nation too.

To commemorate that day, Burna on a Micheal Jackson sampled beat pours his heart out and vents his frustrations about the incident.

Child of the world is a single off the 27 albums by Falz, where he narrates the perilous life of a young girl who is molested by her uncle, and eventually grows up to be some sort of a nymphomaniac.

She gets mixed up with a group of girls who do anything for money and they introduce her into the life of getting paid for getting laid.

After she is diagnosed with H.I.V she finds herself and redirects her steps, going forward to help others and sensitize the youth on abstinence and responsibility.

Omawumi took this song as an opportunity to speak on some of the hidden perversion existing in modern society.

A typical example is a story she tells of a family consisting of a father, mother, and daughter who sees the mother travel, and Omawumi noticing questionable activities between the father and daughter.

of course, the presentation of the subject matter is a bit amusing, but she calls attention to the disturbing habit of some fathers molesting and also impregnating their own daughters.

Mode 9’s Monalisa of Song is one of the most powerful Nigerian hip-hop songs of all time which tells two different stories with each first.

Verse 1: the story of university sweethearts who got married, but the husband went on to become a drunk and the wife was home and miserable. She got pregnant and on her delivery date, the drunken husband drove in a rush to meet her and got into an accident, leaving his wife a widow and the newborn baby boy fatherless.

Verse 2: Tells the story of two childhood friends ending up in the same university but joining two different rival cults. The gang rivalry flung them against each other and when there was an eventual showdown, they both died by each other’s trigger fingers. This verse will literally give you chills when you listen.

Timaya- Dem Mama

The Odi Massacre was a mass killing in Odi, Bayelsa state where civilians were killed by the military in response to a high tension conflict involving oil resources.

As Timaya tells it, civilians were raped and killed, children were victims as well as parents of children who were orphaned.

Dem Mama had vibrant beats and a heavy tempo, making it sound like a club banger (which it actually was), but the message was a tragic report of the violence that tore families apart and claimed lives.

PSquare- Oga Police

PSquare came through on this one to speak the minds of the average Nigerian who has experienced Police harassment either as a motorist or as a local beer and Nkwobi joint customer.

Verse 1: Crusing down the road with a chic in the passenger seat and police tries to cramp your style and harrass you for paper.

Verse 2: Chilling at the joint with homies from abroad while chics are ordering Isi Ewu and Turkey and the cops come through on buzzkill patrol.

Following the death of eastern Nigerian artist MC Loph, Flavour who was a friend and affiliate released the tribute single where he expresses his personal grief and that of MC Loph’s family.

He narrates the story of Loph traveling to the east with his brother as they took a new car home to their mother.

The heartbreaking vocals and the deep lyrics that state the consolation Flavour offered to Loph’s mother, make this one of the deepest Nigerian songs of all time

These songs might be old but they will forever remain classics. They were the songs our parents grew up with and they set the foundation upon which the Music industry is thriving.

Send down the rain – Majek Fashek (1988)

Majek Fashek also known as the Rainmaker was a singer, Songwriter, and Guitarist. Majek died in the month of June 2020.

His popular album, Prisoner of conscience was his debut album. Send the rain was the lead single from the album. It was released in 1988.

Osondi Owendi – Osita Osadebe

Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe is an Igbo highlife singer who to date remains the best highlife singer the Igbo trie had ever produced.

The Legendary singer died in 2007 from a respiratory illness at the age of 71. Osondi Owendi was Osita Osadebe’s best song.  Late rapper Mc Loph and Flavour did a remix of the song in 2012.

Zombie – Fela Anikulapo Kuti (1977)

Known to be the founder of Afrobeat and the most controversial artist that Nigeria must have ever produced, Fela was an enigma.

The Legendary singer made Zombie as a diss song for the Nigeria Miltary after several attacks on him, his band, and his family.

The song taunted the Nigerian Soldiers on the way they acted like robots and were easily controlled.

However, the song fueled the hatred the Nigerian Miltary had for Fela causing them to storm and raid Fela’s Kalakuta Republic. They attacked occupants, Fela was severely injured, his mother thrown out of a window.

Seun Rere  – Christy Essien

Christy Essien fondly known as the Nigerian lady of Songs, Christy was a musician and an actress. She was also the first female president of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN).

In 1981, she released a hit song titled Seun Rere (translated as ‘do good’) in the album Ever Liked My Person? under International Records, Skylark Records.

Baby Jowo  – Victor Olaiya

Victor Olaiya was a trumpeter and a highlife singer. He was referred to as the Evil Genius of Highlife. He Died in February 2020

Victor Olaiya released great hits like ‘Omo Pupa”, Mofe Muyan”, “Olalenke” amongst others. But for this writer, Baby Jowo takes the crown out of all his songs.

Baby Jowo is like an ode to a woman he loves. The song talks about the woman staying by his side while he does his best to try and love her.

Victor Olaiya remixed the song in 2013 and featured Tuface or 2Baba.

Sweet Mother – Prince Nico Mbarga (1976)

Prince Nico Mbarga was a highlife of Nigerian and Cameroon descent. The singer was the lead singer of a band called the Rocafil Jazz.

“Sweet Mother“ Released in 1976, it remains one of the most popular songs in Africa. The song is the favorite tune used to celebrate Mother’s Day.

Time na Money – Mike Okri (1988)

Mike Okri stormed the Nigerian music scene in 1988 with his chart-busting debut LP, Concert Fever.

The singer who belonged to the Nigerian pop generation of Dizzy K Falola, Felyx and Mozyx, Alex O, Alex Zitto, and Chris Mba, almost immediately changed the general tone of Nigerian pop music and was hailed as a fresh sound.

He released Time na Money in 1988. The song talked about the best usage of Time explaining that time wasted is money wasted.

Ifeoma – Felix Liberty (1989)

Known as the Lover Boy, Felix Liberty is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and record producer. His hit song, Ifeoma was released in 1989.

In the song, he sings about a girl called Ifeoma who he claims he wants to marry and begs her to give him her love.

Joromi – Victor Uwaifo (1969)

Victor Uwaifo is a musician, writer, sculptor, and musical instrument inventor. Victor was popularly known for his hit songs like “Guitar Boy” and “Mami Water”.

He released Joromi in 1969

Today makes it four years since Nigeria lost one of its best R’n’B artists, OJB Jezreel to the hands of death. Also, June 12th was also the death anniversary of gospel artiste, Kefee.

For this list, we won’t be mentioning songs from music icons like Christy Essien, Ras Kimono, Majek Fashek, Oliver de Coque, Fela Kuti, Sir Warrior, Osita Osadebe and the rest.

5. MC Loph feat. Flavour – Osondi Owendi

Mc Loph was a rapper who died in a tragic accident while en route to his hometown for his traditional marriage in 2011.

Mc Loph broke into the music with his cover of Late Osita Osadebe‘s hit song, “Osondi Owendi”. In the song, he features his friend, Flavour. The song was a massive hit, especially among the Igbo tribe.

4. KEFEE Ft Timaya – Kokoroko

Kefee was a popular Gospel artiste, who came into the music scene with ‘Brahama” and died in 2014 from lung failure. She enlisted the help of fellow South-South artiste, Timaya to deliver her best song ever, “Kokoroko”.

3. Goldie – You know it

Goldie was seen as Nigerian Lady Gaga and released songs that differentiated her from any other female singers. Goldie was not just a singer but a fashion icon. She died in 2013 from hypertensive heart disease.

Goldie released hits like “Jawo Jawo”, “Say my name”, “Don’t touch my body” but this writer thinks that her best song was “You Know It” featuring Eldee de don.

2. DaGrin – Pon Pon

DaGrin is seen as the artist that brought Yoruba rap to the forefront. The rapper brought with him cultural reset which is unforgettable. His most successful song, “Pon Pon” was a massive hit that saw him topping English rappers in Nigeria. He died in 2010 from a tragic accident.

1.OJB Jezreel – Searching

OJB was a singer, songwriter and record producer. The versatile artiste had worked with a different range of artistes in Nigeria. He died in 2016 from Kidney disease.

OJB‘s memorable song of all time is “Searching” where he showed his R ‘n’ B prowess.

Obiajulu Kenneth Nwaozor

Mc Loph sadly did not enjoy the beauty of fame for so long as he died at the bud of his career. He died while driving down to the East along the Benin/Ore road when his automobile crashed on Wednesday, September 14, 2011. Loph was in the company of his sister and fiancée who was supposed to become his bride in a few days. His bride-to-be survived the accident while his only sibling died.

He was buried on Friday, October 28, 2011 along with his sister Chinwe at his family’s compound in Ugwuaro, Anambra State.
