Over the years, Nigerian artists have released hit songs that not only got popular because of their lyrics but because they also have a signature dance to go with them.

Songs and dances go together like peanut butter and jelly. However, not every song that is released has a distinctive dance move to go with it. And for those who do, not all the dances are memorable, entertaining, or popular online.

Many artists are using their unique dance movements to promote their new songs in the age of TikTok and social media dance challenges. Some musicians even go so far as to write a song just to make it danceable, in an effort to improve the likelihood that it will become viral.

In this article, we examine certain Nigerian songs, both old and new, that had a signature dance or had one provided to them and was successful in making it viral.

Shoki

The top song on this list is Shoki by Lil Kesh from 2014. The song was accompanied by the dance step Shoki. Shoki began a year before the song’s release in 2013. Although there is considerable debate regarding the dance move’s origins, Lil Kesh undoubtedly contributed to its widespread popularity.

Alingo

Alingo is a 2013 hit song by the music duo P-square. P-square is made up of brothers Peter and Paul Okoye, who have had big falling outs throughout the years but are now back together. Alingo was accompanied by the infamous dance move of the same name. Alingo was popular, although the dance required some serious practice.

Science Student

Olamide’s 2018 song Science Student featured the already well-known dance move Shaku Shaku as an accompaniment. Although numerous songs contributed to the success of Shaku Shaku, Olamide’s Science Student undoubtedly holds the top spot. At its peak, Shaku Shaku was a phenomenon that completely overtook social media.

Sekem

MC Galaxy’s 2016 banger Sekem came with a signature dance move. Following his victory in Davido’s dance competition for Skelewu, the singer released the song and the dance move that goes with it. For a long time, the song and dance had Nigerians under its spell. It is still well-liked today.

Legbegbe

Mr Real’s 2018 smash song, Legbegbe, has earned a spot on this list thanks to its accompanying dance step. Legbegbe was a legitimate party hit, and it contributed to Mr Real’s rise to fame.

Zanku

With its accompanying dance step of the same name, Zlatan’s 2018 hit song Zanku, ushered in a new wave of excitement. Leg Work, also known as Zanku, revolutionised the music industry, and Zlatan used it to his advantage at the time to achieve maximum growth. Even today, zanku is a popular dance move that has evolved into many others over the years.

Skelewu

Without Davido’s Skelewu, this list would be incomplete. Many people are quick to overlook the stand-strong crooner’s talent as a dancer.

The 2016 single popularised a dance that spread not just throughout Nigeria but all of Africa. The dance’s premiere was a pivotal moment in OBO’s career because it is still highly well-liked today. We can safely say that it was a banger.

Bobo

Olamide, the leader of YBNL, is back on the list once more courtesy to his 2016 hit, Bobo. When Bobo came out, it became an anthem, and the dance move Shakitibobo that went along with it contributed to some of its appeal.

The iconic visual that Olamide released accompanying the song makes it nearly difficult to forget the dance move. Every single time the song played, you could not help but perform the distinctive dancing move.

Ijo (Laba Laba)

Things for Mavin signee and superstar Crayon have completely changed with the release of Overloading (Overdose). A few weeks later, Crayon released Ijo (Laba Laba), which came with a distinctive dance.

Ijo (Laba Laba) is an upbeat tune that will make you want to shake your body, and the video for the song, which features the new dance move, is evidence of this.

Here is a list of Nigerian celebrities with whom Davido has recently had a conflict.

Wizkid

The feud between Wizkid and Davido seems to have begun before their friendship did. The two became friends after Davido rose to fame with his debut track, “Dami duro,” but the connection was short-lived because their never-ending feud began a few months later.

The conflict between the two parties seemingly has no beginning. Davido has been entangled in one argument or another with Wizkid ever since he rose to popularity.

Fans hardly even recall what sparked their altercation. You can say they have a love-and-hate relationship.

MC Galaxy

It was alleged that MC Galaxy was assaulted by Davido and his crew back in 2015.

The altercation began with a disagreement between B-Red (Davido’s cousin) and MC Galaxy.

MC Galaxy asserted that he was more well-known than B-Red. The HKN performer refuted the claim, claiming that he was more well-known than MC Galaxy.

Davido jumped into the fray, telling MC Galaxy to leave the studio because he did not like him abusing his artists.

Davido struck Galaxy in the back before he could respond.

When that happened, Lati, his driver, took over and punched Galaxy before hitting him in the head with an Orijin bottle.

When MC Galaxy was reached, he confirmed the attack indeed took place.

Although Davido later refuted the claims, saying that he had not been involved in the incident.

Dele Momodu

The conflict between the two parties began in December 2015, when the DMW label boss clashed with Sophia, his baby mama and Momodu’s cousin.

The two got into a fight when Sophia stopped Davido from taking his daughter to Dubai against her will.

Later, Davido expressed regret for his behaviour and claimed Momodu might have handled the situation more effectively. But he was far from finished.

First Davido created the evergreen line on Humblesmith’s breakout single – ‘Osinachi’ – which was hugely instrumental to the success of the singer.

Davido’s opening goes like this: “My humble father sinachi, My loving daughter sinachi mo, My baby mama sinachi, Dele Momodu, sinachi mo. No be by force to go Dubai, Abi na wetin cause the fight…”

But Davido was not done. In his next featured verse which he supplied for Falz’s ‘Bahd, Baddo, Baddest”, he came through with the killer line of them all: “Mr Dele na my boy Dele na my boy.”

Reacting in an interview with JOY NEWS, a Ghanaian station, Momodu said Davido cannot say such to his face.

B-Red & Sina Rambo

Earlier in 2016, the trio argued over Davido’s feelings toward new signing Mayorkun, who had back then just released his first single, ‘Eleko.’

They started exchanging rants on social media because Mayorkun received extra attention.

On Sunday, April 17, 2016, Davido wrote, “My own blood hating on me .. Over MAYORKUN’s success wow !!! I’ve done so much for u .. U still no blow !! FUCK OUTTA HERE!! Hater oshi”.

“You don do over 10 videos and nothing happened, so don’t bring ur anger to me please.”

However, they have all settled and even gone to collaborate on several songs.

Ice Prince

Davido and Ice Prince were reportedly embroiled in a brawl in Warri while in town for a show called Delta Alive.

Shina Peller, CEO of Quillox Club, organized the event, which featured Davido, Lil Kesh, Ice Prince, CDQ, and other artists as headliners.

According to reports, the commotion started when Davido was picked up by a G-Wagon from the airport and Ice Prince by a saloon car.

According to accounts, Ice Prince was enraged by the gesture and revealed his feelings to the event’s organisers.

While it is possible that the event’s organisers were sympathetic to Ice Prince’s protest, Davido was reportedly furious.

The situation escalated during the concert when Ice Prince was made to perform before Lil Kesh, which was seen as an insult as the former is a bigger artiste.

Of course, Ice Prince made an issue of this and Davido who already had an axe to grind with the ‘Aboki‘ singer, spoke up in Lil Kesh’s defence and things got messy real quick.

Burna Boy

Burna Boy’s spat with Davido is said to have started in the autumn of 2019, when Burna Boy was nominated for a Grammy for Best World Music Album for ‘African Giant.’

After Burna Boy’s loss to Beninese singer Angelique Kidjo for the prize, Odogwu went silent on social media for a while, which led some people to worry that he did not take his loss well.

His comeback to social media was marked by a since-deleted response to a Twitter user who had made the insulting claim that Burna Boy had Wizkid and Davido to thank for his success.

Burna Boy responded to the Twitter user by alleging that no one had helped him along the road and making subtle jabs at his contemporaries, claiming that nobody in his industry gave a damn.

Then in 2020, the beef became more visible as Davido announced the release of his album in July that year.

Burna Boy wasted no time in entering into Davido, as days later, he posted a black screen with the message, “JULY will be very funny, and I shall laugh accordingly” on social media, suggesting to his fans that he will be ridiculing Davido’s new album.

In his track ‘FEM’ which is Yoruba slang for ‘shut up’, Davido addresses Burna Boy directly in the line, “Then Odogwu says we like to party just call me…” – ‘Odogwu’ and ‘Like to Party’ are both names of a Burna Boy song.

The two took their beef further by engaging in a fight in a club in Ghana, in the early days of 2021.

According to an eyewitness, Burna Boy came to the club and charged at Davido. The African Giant was later asked to leave the premises with his boys.

Cynthia Morgan

Cynthia and Davido had an argument just two days into the year of 2016. Cynthia Morgan went after Davido when he revealed Lil Kesh as the winner of the Next Rated Award in October.

Davido and Wizkid

This has to be one of the most viral love and hate relationships that exist in the music industry.

Davido and Wizkid are at the top of their careers and for as long as one can remember, at being at loggerheads, although not openly.

Even when there looks to be a ceasefire between the two, their fans continue the war on their behalf.

What started out as mere social media and industry comparison turned out to become a real-life issue.

Davido and Wizkid like every music artiste in this article started out as friends but the rapid growth of the former saw him become rival to a man that used to inspire his work.

The pair had been in a heated battle of supremacy along the lines of chart list dominance, talents, and the calibres of international collaborations for years.

The first time the duo were publicly sorted their issue was during Wizkid’s concert, which took place at the Eko Convention Centre in Lagos in December 2017 where they performed together.

However, their feud continued the following years disappointing many music lovers and worsening the issue between the fanbases.

Recently a video of them cuddling appeared online, which sent the internet into a frenzy. The two were apparently clubbing at Quilox when they saw each other and gave each other a hearty hug.

Don Jazzy and Olamide

This was undoubtedly the most high-profile celebrity feud of 2016. It all started with Don Jazzy’s singer, Reekado Banks, receiving the highly coveted Next Rated Award at the Headies Awards.

Olamide was disappointed since he had hoped that his artist at the moment, Lil Kesh, would receive the prize. He expressed his dissatisfaction while accepting his own award.

Don Jazzy, who felt slighted by Olamide’s outburst, stormed the stage and demanded that Olamide come up to the podium and accept the prize for the prized award, a car, if he feel wronged.

Olamide, enraged, vented his rage on Twitter, where he called out Don Jazzy. Aliko Dangote, a billionaire industrialist, was said to have intervened and resolved the disagreement.

P-square

P-square’s split was one of the most shocking breakups in the Industry as they were twins and not many people expected that even blood wouldn’t be enough reason to hold them together.

After a series of online dragging, The duo which is made up of Peter and Paul Okoye split in 2017 after falling out over a family dispute.

In a post on Instagram in 2021, the two reconciled and jointly celebrated their 40th birthday, publicly announcing to followers that they were back together.

They also hosted a reunion event which reminded fans of their greatness.

2Baba and Blackface

After years of hostility, 2baba and Blackface reconciled and buried the hatchet.

Years ago, 2baba (Innocent Idibia) and his old Plantashun Boiz label mate Blackface (Ahmedu Augustine Obiabo) had a falling out when the latter accused the former of ripping off his song, African Queen.

African Queen was originally created by Blackface, but 2Baba allegedly remade the song without giving him credit, causing him to lose royalties.

An enraged Blackface, who has been passionate about his charges since the release of African Queen in 2004, has pursued it with all means available, including calling out his former label partner on social media.

2Baba, enraged by Blackface’s frequent attacks, filed a defamation suit against him for N50 million, resulting in the music industry’s most famous legal battle.

After a supposed out-of-court settlement, Blackface agreed to stop publicly defaming 2Face’s image in exchange for the latter agreeing to work out a settlement plan allowing the former to profit from the hit single’s earnings.

Despite the fact that they both chose an out-of-court settlement, their rivalry lasted after several attempts to reconcile them by entertainment industry giants failed.

However, after the shocking death of Sound Sultan in 2021, Eddy Lawani, the man who literarily found Plantashun Boiz, used Sound Sultan’s tribute night to bring the feuding parties together.

After what could be perceived as a squashing of their long-running feud, the event reached a pinnacle with a magnificent musical performance by Plantashun Boiz (2Face, Blackface, and Faze).

Zlatan and DJ Cuppy

DJ Cuppy and Zlatan in 2021 made the headlines after the former took to social media to reveal that the latter had blocked her on all available social media channels.

Zlatan did not help issues when he denied knowing who Cuppy was when asked about the issue during an interview.

Afeare Israel also known as Israel DMW, logistics manager to Davido revealed that the Zanku rapper did not make any money from his collaboration with DJ cuppy in their hit song ‘Gelato’.

Thankfully, the Billionaire heiress/DJ made peace with Zlatan during his O2 show.

The duo successfully reunited on a Sunday night and performed their hit single “Gelato”, during Zlatan’s debut O2 show.

M.I Abaga and Vector

In 2019, Vector made headlines after he dropped a diss song for fellow rapper, M.I Abaga. Prior to that, there had been cold tension between the two and wasn’t until Vector dropped a diss track, things began to unravel.

This led to a couple of diss songs traded between the two rappers and a docu-series by Hennessy on the growth of Hip-Hop in Nigeria.

In 2020, decided to sheath their swords and end their famous beef which dominated the Nigerian rap scene the previous year.

In the third and final part of “The Conversation”, a Hennessy Nigeria documentary series based on the rivalry between M.I and Vector, the duo met face-to-face and discussed what transpired between them.

The episode started with both rappers previewing what the other had said during the course of the series. At one point, M.I said he had the impression that Vector just doesn’t like him, while Vector said he believes M.I is cunning and deceptive.

Later, M.I and Vector were invited into the same room where they discussed their rivalry and resolved the issues between them.

Not too long, Vector dropped a rap track titled “Crown of Clay” which featured M.I and Pheelz. In 2022, they also dropped another track titled ‘Spirit“.

Burna Boy and Davido

Another major beef in the Nigerian music industry that also came to an end was that of Burna Boy and Davido.

The “Bank On It” crooner took to his Instagram story to inform his fans that he has “no issue” with Davido, assuring that they have now settled their drawn-out rift.

The head or tail of their beef isn’t certain but according to Davido in an interview with notable compere Ebuka on Bounce radio, his relationship with Burna Boy went sour after he posted a picture of himself and Wizkid as the “greatest of all time(goat).”

Shortly after Davido’s post, Burna Boy tweeted “everybody knows you don’t know how to play football, your dad bought the football team.”

Ever since then the duo have not ceased to take shady jabs at each other publicly.

Moving forward, Burna boy insists they must love themselves regardless.

“2022 all of us must love ourselves by fire by force, if not make we just kill ourselves,” Burna Boy said.

MC Galaxy used to be a comedian and dancer before he became a musician. If you check Iyanya’s Kukere music Video, you’ll notice that he’s doing his thing.

You can’t talk about MC Galaxy’s success story without mentioning Davido’s name.

In 2012, MC Galaxy won N500,000 in a phoney dancing competition at Davido’s event. Davido’s career was in its early stages at the time, and this stunt helped Mc Galaxy get some notoriety.

The following year, in 2013, MC Galaxy and Davido collaborated on Nek Unek.

The song catapulted the dancer/comedian to stardom on a national scale. Only Sekem should surpass Nek Unek as MC Galaxy’s second-biggest hit.

Runtown

Runtown began his music career in 2010, but it wasn’t until 2014 that he got his big break. He released Gallardo with Davido at the start of that year, and it quickly became one of the biggest songs in the Nigerian music industry.

Gallardo received the 2014 Nigeria Entertainment Awards’ Best Collaboration of the Year Award. Davido was the talk of the town at the time, having released his mega-hit Skelewu the year before.

The song was the first single from Runtown’s Ghetto University album, and it was a huge hit.

Tekno

Tekno deserves the most of the credit for his accomplishment. He’s on our list, though, since Davido gave him a head start. Tekno rose to prominence as a Triple MG artist with his singles “Dance” and “Anything“.

However, before joining Triple MG, Tekno was signed to K-Money Entertainment, where he released his first official single. “Holiday” was the name of the song, and Davido was featured on it.

Davido used his official Instagram page to challenge celebrities who are his associates and acquaintances to raise N100 million for his birthday on November 21st.

Zlatan was the first to respond, later, other celebrities like Mr Eazi, Patoranking, E-Money, Chike, Nengi and others started sending in their own contribution.

Nigerians love to dance and it’s in our DNA, so many Nigerian artists are aware.

Therefore they’re constantly writing songs for the latest dance moves or for the more creative ones, artists inventing new dance moves for Nigerians to rock to and extend the life of their songs.

Various artists have introduced several dance techniques over the years, but only a few have gone viral and shook the dance floors.

Galala – Daddy Showkey

This dance step is associated with “the ghetto” or Ajegunle, Lagos, it originated from the pseudo-reggae sound made popular by artists like Ras Kimono, Blacky, Fada U-Turn, etc.

Azonto – Fuse ODG

Azonto became popular in Nigeria thanks to Ghanaian singer Fuse ODG whose monster hit song ‘Azonto’ featuring Tiffany was released on the 27th of Oct 2011.

It gained more popularity when Wizkid did a freestyle on it and when the video above went viral, gaining more views than even the official video by Fuse.

It has gone on to become one of the greatest dance movements in the last decade, spreading from Ghana to other African countries and Europe.

Etighi/Kukere – Iyanya

Etighi originated from the Calabar/Akwa Ibom region of Nigeria, It became mainstream popular when Iyanya; who is from this region released the video for his hit single, Kukere in 2012.

Etighi had a brief but intense lifespan because it was the simplest of dances but if you take a closer look, it is there in many dance routines.

Skelewu – Davido

The Nigerian Afro-pop singer, Davido wowed everyone with his hit single released on Aug 18, 2013, Skelewu, and followed it up with a beautiful dance step to promote the song.

The song gave the Nigerian artist recognition home and abroad; the most memorable was when it was played during the halftime of a Spanish La Liga match.

Shoki –  Lil Kesh

Shoki will be remembered as one of Nigeria’s most controversial dance steps because about three acts claimed to be its originator.

They are Dre San, Lil Kesh, and Orezi, it had bubbled underground in Lagos for a year before Lil Kesh gave himself and the style a massive push with the release of his hit single “Shoki” in 2014.

Leaving the originator issue behind, Shoki was a hit, considering how easy it is.

Shakiti Bobo – Olamide

This dance begins and ends with the self-styled King of the Streets, Olamide. In 2015, Olamide released another one of his sneak attacks on radio and the clubs titled “Bobo”.

In what looked like a mere freestyle when it was first released, Olamide’s Bobo became a monster hit when its visuals were released with a trending dance step that many embraced with both arms.

Bobo became so famous that it sneaked into churches across the federation.

Shaku Shaku – Slimcase

This is another controversial dance step that blew up at the end of 2016 but those who are more familiar with its origins claim it has been a rave in Agege for two years and counting.

Zanku – Zlatan Ibile

Sekem dancers are lovely to watch, the jolly sideways, back and forth moves are the beauty of the dance step created by MC Galaxy on his hit track Sekem.

It had a brief life span as it was Simple but cost us our footwear.

Mayorkun is one of the few Nigerian Artists who get a chance at fame after their cover of another artist’s song gets viral.

Davido chanced upon him on social media signing to his “Money” song and invited him over a DM to his house and from there, it was history.

Mayorkun is one of the few artists in the DMW Family that bonds well with Davido and is even seen by many as his protege.

Peruzzi

Apart from being an amazing singer, Peruzzi is a talented songwriter which has earned him a valuable spot in the DMW Label. In fact, some of Davido’s hit songs from 2017 were written by him.

Runtown

Runtown gathered airplay when he released Party Like 1980 but his big break didn’t come until he got a verse from Davido.

The DMW chief laced Runtown’s biggest hit, Gallardo with one of his best verses and the Sound God has gone on to become a star of his own.

Tekno

Tekno is among those who have benefited from Davido in terms of a collaborative project.

Tekno became known and loved by music lovers after Davido featured in his 2014 hit single, Holiday. Davido’s star power heavily rode the song into the hearts of thousands of music lovers and made them fall in love with the equally talented Tekno.

Tekno would years later replicate the favour by writing and producing the award-winning and double Gold-certified “If“, one of Davido’s biggest song to date.

Humblesmith

Humblesmith was gained a bit of fame with his gospel-like song, “Osinachi” but it got bigger after Davido jumped on the remix.

Lyta

After ending things on a bad note with his former boss, Olamide (which was almost a career suicide) and trying to find his feet in the industry again, Davido graciously agreed to feature on Lyta comeback singer “Monalisa”. Davido also played a huge role in the music video of the song.

Lyta is currently signed to Marlian Music still trying to shed his past controversies off and dominate the industry.

Sauce Kid/Sinzu

Sauce Kid was a popular figure in the music scene in the early 200os with his unique style of rap songs. After a while of being in the background, he released a song titled “Carolina” in 2011 featuring Davido.

In 2017, he got arrested in the US on bank fraud charges and after completing his two-year jail term for aggravated identity theft, Not minding what people would say, Davido opened his arms wide to Sauce Kid and signed him to the DMW family. Not much have been heard from him however in terms of music.

Dammy Krane

In 2016, reports of Davido signing Dammy Krane flooded Social media. As of that time, Krane had just finished his contract with 2Baba‘s Hypertek. However, nothing came out of the relationship as Dammy Krane would get arrested in 2017 for card fraud in the US.

Although he was acquitted of all charges, Dammy’s career took a nosedive as is still struggling to revive his career, not much has been heard of his contract with DMW.

May D

May D came into the music scene with former music duo, P-square and he was one of the instruments behind the making of their Award-winning album, “The Invasion”.

Unfortunately, his relationship with the brothers went sour and also causing his career to take a nosedive. It wasn’t until 2020 when he made a comeback with “Lowo Lowo” and Davido jumped on the remix. A few weeks later, the two announced a partnership of some sort.

For reasons unknown, Skales took to social media to issue a serious warning to his colleague, MC Galaxy.

On a post sighted on his IG story, Skales disclosed he has lost his patience with Galaxy, and he is going to beat him black and blue when they cross paths.

“One day I go beat that stupid smelling MC Galaxy…fuck boy,” he wrote.

Reacting to Skales’ threat, Galaxy told him to keep him posted when he is ready for the fight. The “Sekem” crooner also disclosed the “Sensima” crooner has been collecting money from rich women. He called Skales a broke guy and advised him to stop begging.

“Broke boys when dey collect money from women can make noise sha lol. Adiok Anofii. Let me know when you are ready for the fight. Idiot lol beggar lol,” he replied.
