Chelsea have reportedly identified Enzo Maresca as their primary managerial target and are moving closer to securing a deal with the current Leicester City boss. This development comes as the club looks for a new head coach following their decision to part ways with Mauricio Pochettino. The Blues are focusing on younger, up-and-coming managers, particularly those who have recently achieved promotion from the Championship.

Initial talks were held with Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna, but he is no longer considered a candidate. Another potential option for Chelsea is Thomas Frank of Brentford, with the club potentially seeking to lure the Dane across west London.

According to The Telegraph, Maresca has emerged as the leading candidate for the position. The Italian manager, who previously served as an assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, successfully led Leicester City to the Championship title in the 2023-24 season.

Chelsea have formally requested permission to approach Maresca and have been impressed by the initial discussions. A deal could be finalized soon, which would see the 44-year-old take on the significant task of meeting the expectations set by Chelsea’s ambitious owners.

The Blues have decided to part ways with Pochettino after only 11 months in charge. Crucial disagreements during his end-of-season review ultimately led to the decision to part ways. As always, nothing is ever simple at Stamford Bridge.

Predictably, social media exploded with reactions to the news, reflecting the shock and mixed feelings among fans.

Pochettino: “you’re letting me go?!?”

After a challenging start to the 2023/24 season, it appeared inevitable that Mauricio Pochettino’s tenure at Chelsea would come to an end. The team struggled on the pitch, and Pochettino faced criticism from a significant portion of the fanbase due to his previous association with Tottenham Hotspur.

However, 2024 brought a notable improvement in Chelsea’s performance. The team experienced a significant upturn in form, clawing their way back into sixth place in the Premier League standings. As a result, they are set to compete in Europa League football next season, unless Manchester United manages to achieve a surprise victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

I honestly think Pochettino deserved another season but this is Chelsea they don’t accept mediocrity 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️😤

The actual point of contention was who would be the future manager.

Because of the unpredictable volatility surrounding this Chelsea team, the search for the fourth permanent manager of the Boehly-Clearlake era appears to have no end in sight.

By mutual consent, Mauricio Pochettino has departed Chelsea.

Pochettino met with co-owner Behdad Eghbali, sports directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, and other team members on Monday to discuss the Argentine’s situation before reaching an agreement to split on Tuesday.

Stuttgart’s Sebastian Hoeness, Girona’s Michel, Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna and Leicester City’s Enzo Maresca are all named as possible targets for the Blues, who are now looking for their fourth permanent manager since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital arrived at the club.

After taking Chelsea to sixth place in the Premier League and securing the team’s return to Europe, Pochettino departs from Chelsea, winning over many of the team’s detractors with the team’s strong finish to the season.

A review of Pochettino’s role this summer was decided upon last summer, as per report in February. As part of the process, the manager will also have the opportunity to provide input on the club’s board-level operations.

There is a strong emphasis on the lack of “bad blood” between Pochettino and Chelsea’s officials, and it is not thought that any conflicts over player sales this summer had anything to do with the decision to split.

Rather, Pochettino is thought to have expressed reservations about operating inside a club framework, and both sides ultimately decided that a split was appropriate.

In advance of a big summer transfer season that may see several exits and a few high-profile signings, Chelsea will now begin their search for a new manager. We anticipate the arrival of a left back, a center back, and a striker.

Despite Chelsea’s convincing 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, manager Mauricio Pochettino remains uncertain about his future with the club.

The Blues, who had won only two of their last seven games in all competitions, showed no signs of struggle as they comfortably secured a two-goal win over their London rivals at Stamford Bridge.

Additionally, Chelsea managed to achieve just their second clean sheet in their last 18 games against Ange Postecoglou’s high-scoring team, marking one of their stronger performances this season overall.

Speaking after the match, Pochettino offered an update on his future: “Enough is enough. All managers need time to translate their ideas and philosophy. It’s not my decision [if I get time]. I don’t know [if I am being judged by the owners].

“It’s difficult to see every single week that I am under scrutiny and judgement. It’s not my decision whether to be here or not to be here [next season].

“I can’t say nothing. What I can say is if after the decision, if we want to match the history of Chelsea it’s a lot of work to do. We’ll see if we have time to build this way.”

Despite the potential for a return to glory and a commendable performance on the night, it will be a challenge for Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital to overlook the lows that Chelsea has experienced this season. Despite significant investments during the summer transfer window, which saw Chelsea’s total spend under new ownership surpass £1 billion, the club has faced its share of setbacks.

With Mauricio Pochettino’s future at the club still uncertain, his focus remains on preparing his team for the remaining four games of the season in hopes of impressing the Chelsea leadership. Their next challenge comes against West Ham on Sunday, May 5th.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has delivered encouraging news regarding Christopher Nkunku’s fitness ahead of the FA Cup clash against Manchester City.

Nkunku’s debut season at Stamford Bridge has been marred by injuries, which have limited his appearances for the Blues. However, Pochettino has revealed that the young Frenchman has resumed training with the team, raising hopes for his potential return to action before the conclusion of the season.

Speaking to the media, the Chelsea boss said: “They assess him day by day and now in the last few days, he has the possibility to be involved in some parts of the training session.

“We now need to see the reaction of his body and then how he is going to evolve. We hope we can involve him and he will be involved as soon as possible, or before the end of the season.”

Chelsea has felt the absence of the French striker keenly, particularly in their struggles to consistently find the net, with the exception of Cole Palmer. Since his high-profile £52 million ($66m) transfer from RB Leipzig last summer as part of a significant overhaul at Stamford Bridge, Christopher Nkunku has only featured nine times for the Blues this season.

Although Chelsea remains optimistic about Nkunku’s potential return before the season’s end, his absence has been notably felt, especially as they prepare for their upcoming FA Cup semi-final clash against Manchester City on Saturday, April 20.

Mauricio Pochettino has urged Chelsea fans to rally behind the team following the incident where Raheem Sterling was subjected to booing during their FA Cup victory.

Despite facing adversity, the Blues emerged victorious with a thrilling 4-2 win over Leicester City in injury time, courtesy of goals from substitutes Carney Chukwuemeka and Noni Madueke.

Although Leicester staged a comeback from a two-goal deficit and had defender Callum Doyle sent off in the second half, Chelsea faced challenges, particularly with Raheem Sterling missing crucial opportunities, including a first-half penalty and a one-on-one chance with Leicester goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk.

A disappointing free-kick attempt further led to some Chelsea fans expressing their frustration by booing the star winger during the match.

Pochettino’s call for support underscores the importance of backing the team as they navigate challenges on the pitch.

Speaking to BBC Sport after the game, the Argentine said: “We need to support him, he’s an amazing player. He has more than 10 years experience in the Premier League. Of course I think the contribution was good. He was a little bit unlucky with some actions where he should have scored. But we are a team and we need to be there for everyone.

“Fans are entitled to show their emotion. For us we try to emphasise with our fans not to criticise. They want the best for our team and players. But we are in a project. We need support and to really believe. We are trying to build something.

“We are in a process to build the team. I know really well how to manage. What the fans want is to win the game and that we achieved. What the fans want is to go to Wembley and that we achieved. They need to trust me to manage in the way I think is the best way for the club.

“We need to respect their opinion as much as they need to respect my decision.”

Despite the tense conclusion to the game, Mauricio Pochettino will draw many positives from his team’s triumph. The win not only sustains the Blues’ aspirations of clinching silverware this season but also propels them into the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

With the victory secured, Raheem Sterling will have an opportunity to take a break and focus on regaining his form, as Chelsea’s next fixture won’t occur until after the international break. Sterling’s recent decline in performance has also been a concern for Gareth Southgate, who has refrained from selecting the 29-year-old for the national team in recent times.

Conor Gallagher gave Mauricio Pochettino credit for the tactical adjustment that enabled Chelsea to overcome Crystal Palace on Monday, coming back from behind.

At Selhurst Park, a Jefferson Lerma screamer initially put Chelsea behind. However, Gallagher immediately tied the score after the break before giving the Blues a crucial second goal in stoppage time. Even later, Enzo Fernandez made it 3-1, and Sky Sports then interviewed Gallagher.

Gallagher heaped praise on his manager, stating: “In the second half the gaffer gave us more structure in their half of the pitch to try and create more chances. Having the two strikers to make more runs in behind to create more space which I think it did. It was really good from the manager and definitely helped us to play better.”

Gallagher is making his mark on Chelsea this season in a way that he couldn’t in 2022/23 when he he started fewer than half the team’s games. So far in 2023/24, the 24-year-old has started all but one of Chelsea’s Premier League fixtures, even captaining the side before Ben Chilwell returned from injury. More recently, Pochettino has deployed Gallagher as a ‘number 10’, despite fans more used to seeing him a bit deeper.

On his positional preference, he added: “I’ve played in a number of positions this season, more so holding midfield. I’m happy to play anywhere for the manager. I’m happy wherever I play. No problem.”

Chelsea must build on their recent winning streak of two games—the FA Cup replay success over Aston Villa midweek and the victory over Palace—because an ugly home loss to Wolves still stings. This is especially significant since, the following weekend, following the Premier League matchup with Manchester City, Liverpool will play in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley, providing Pochettino with his first major trophy win as manager.

Christopher Nkunku from Chelsea will not be making an early return from a hip injury, and Malo Gusto has also joined him on the treatment table.

Nkunku, who missed a significant portion of the first half of the season due to a knee problem, encountered a fresh injury in early January during training. Initially, it was suggested that he would be sidelined for three weeks, and there were reports of a potential early return. However, Chelsea has now confirmed that he is still “undergoing his rehabilitation programme.”

When questioned about Nkunku’s availability in a press conference before the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Middlesbrough on Tuesday, head coach Mauricio Pochettino stated, “No. He’s not available. It’s a shame. He’s still recovering. He suffered a little bit in his hip, now he’s recovering. It’s not a big issue. It’s just delayed the possibility of being available again.”

The £52 million ($66 million) summer signing, Christopher Nkunku, has yet to make an appearance in 2024, missing games against Preston, Middlesbrough, and Fulham. Additionally, Nkunku’s compatriot, Gusto, has also joined him on the treatment table, ruling them both out for the clash with Middlesbrough.

With 10 first-team players unavailable for the second leg, including club captain Reece James, Romeo Lavia, and Wesley Fofana, and loanee Cesare Casadei being cup-tied, Chelsea faces a challenging scenario.

Nevertheless, they hope to have enough quality players to overturn a 1-0 aggregate deficit and secure a spot in the Carabao Cup final. The Carabao Cup represents Chelsea’s best chance of winning silverware at this stage of the season, with Liverpool being the likely opponents in the Wembley showpiece. Nkunku aims to return to training before the significant league meeting with Aston Villa on Friday night.

Lavia, who was a £58 million signing in the summer, made his long-awaited debut by playing the final 30 minutes of the victory at Stamford Bridge.

However, the excitement of his debut was dampened as Pochettino revealed that, by the end of the game, Lavia could hardly walk. The midfielder is set to undergo fresh medical checks after experiencing another problem, raising concerns about his fitness and availability for upcoming matches.

“He feels something, some issue,” Pochettino said. “We need to check and hope it’s not [bad].

“I’m a little bit worried. I don’t know, because if you were watching the game [against Crystal Palace] you cannot appreciate I was changing the position with Lavia at the end because he was struggling to run. We will see what is going on.

“Hopefully it is not a big issue and he can play with us again. Important player that will recover and it is going to be a shame if we cannot use him in the next few games.”

In addition to the injury concern for Romeo Lavia, winger Mykhailo Mudryk also underwent a scan after the game, having limped off with 20 minutes to go during Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Crystal Palace. The extent of Mudryk’s injury is yet to be determined.

As Chelsea concludes the year 2023, they are set to face Luton Town at Kenilworth Road. Luton Town, having embraced their role as underdogs, are currently on a two-game winning streak.

The match will be a challenging end to the year for Chelsea, considering the injury concerns and the form of their opponents.

“I think that game against Crystal Palace is a good example that we need to go there, to Luton, and to think it is going to be really tough,” Pochettino said of the upcoming game. “The stadium, the fans, it is a team that loves to fight, loves to work really, really hard.

“It is so difficult if you watch the last few games at their stadium, it’s always tough for all of the opponents. If we want to get a good result, we need to be ready to of course play football, but we need to match their desire, the capacity to fight in every single goal. It’s going to be a good test for us. It’s the challenge to be consistent. For us now, it’s to go there and first of all to fight, be clever, be focused and then try to win the game.”

Noni Madueke has provided insight into his conversation with Conor Gallagher before stepping up to take the crucial penalty that secured Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace.

Despite initially taking the lead with Mykhailo Mudryk’s early goal, Chelsea found themselves level at halftime following Michael Olise’s equalizer in first-half stoppage time. In the second half, Chelsea’s persistence paid off, and in the final minutes, Madueke won a decisive penalty after drawing a foul from Olise following a corner.

After VAR confirmed the infringement inside the box, Madueke took charge of the ball and reassured Gallagher that he would convert the penalty. This conversation between Madueke and Gallagher played a role in the decisive blow that secured Chelsea’s victory over Crystal Palace.

Speaking to Chelsea’s official channels after the match, Madueke said: “It was always gonna be mine, I’m confident, confident from the spot so yeah. I just told him [Gallagher] don’t worry I’ll score. I scored one earlier this season [against AFC Wimbledon]. So when I saw the VAR give the penalty, there was no doubt in my mind that I would take it.”

Madueke has found it difficult to nail down a starting berth under Mauricio Pochettino, as he has struggled with a couple of muscle injuries since the start of the campaign. He admitted that it has been a rough start to his journey in west London but vowed to make an “impact” whenever he is handed the opportunity by the manager.

“It’s been a stop-start campaign for me,” he said. “I’ve had little niggles, little injuries, things that haven’t quite gone my way. I’m happy to have an impact off the bench today and whether I start the next game – or have the same impact off the bench – is up to the manager.”

Madueke is already looking ahead and emphasizing the importance of consistency for Chelsea, as the Blues will be eager to close down the gap with the top four sides by building on the momentum after this victory.

“It’s about consistency for us at the moment, that is the big thing,” he said.

“We play good football and are scoring goals now – I remember last season we weren’t scoring those goals. We’re probably conceding a few too many but I just feel it’s that consistency we need to get down. Once we do, we’ll be a really good team. We’ve had some very good performances this season where we haven’t got the rub of the green. It’s a process and where we are now will not define us come the end of the season.”

The final game of 2023 for Chelsea is scheduled for Saturday afternoon, when they will travel to Luton Town.

Mauricio Pochettino has acknowledged that Chelsea is grappling with a significant challenge amid their difficult Premier League campaign in 2023-24.

Despite delivering promising performances against top-tier rivals such as Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester City on home turf, Chelsea has been plagued by inconsistency since Pochettino assumed managerial duties in the summer.

Pochettino maintains that the team’s overall performances haven’t been overly subpar. However, he candidly concedes that his players seem to be missing the crucial competitive edge required for success in the demanding Premier League. This acknowledgement suggests that Chelsea is facing difficulties maintaining a consistent level of performance and competitiveness, potentially contributing to their challenging run in the league.

Speaking to the official Chelsea website, Pochettino said: “The performance from the beginning of the season is not bad. We could have said it’s very good, but in terms of competing we are at the bottom. That is why we are not in a better position in the table. Football is about having all the quality and knowledge in your set-ups, the way you press and build from the back, and so on. Then at some point during the 90 minutes, you need to compete: that is the moment you need to show you can play another [style of] football. We need to improve there.”

Since Todd Boehly took over in 2022, Chelsea has invested over £1 billion in player acquisitions. Despite significant financial outlays and heightened fan expectations for the club to be competitive in European football, reality has fallen short of these aspirations. As of the 2023–24 season, Champions League qualification appears to be slipping out of reach, prompting the acknowledgment that Chelsea may have to wait another year before making a return to the elite stage.

Mauricio Pochettino, Chelsea’s manager, has conceded that the team is significantly behind the preseason targets. In his own words, “We are so far away from our targets. Our target was to be at the top, even if nobody believed it. Now we are fighting for different things. Because of our history, the demand is to be at the top, but at the moment, being realistic, we need to increase the way we compete if we want to win more games than we lose.”

This candid assessment underscores the gap between the club’s expectations and its current performance, emphasizing the need for improvement in their competitive approach to achieve better results.

Last weekend, Chelsea lost their 19th Premier League match of 2023 to Wolves, which ties them for the most losses in the English top division with Fulham, Bournemouth, and Nottingham Forest.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that goalkeeper Robert Sanchez will be unavailable for the upcoming match against Sheffield United due to a knee injury.

Sanchez was substituted in the 83rd minute of Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat to Everton, and the severity of his injury rules him out of the next game. Summer signing Djordje Petrovic is expected to step in and make his Premier League debut in Sanchez’s absence.
