For Manchester United’s No. 10 position in the upcoming season, Bruno Fernandes will compete with recently signed Mason Mount.

The Portuguese midfielder has revealed that Erik ten Hag has not yet made a decision on whether he or Mount will play at No. 10 next season for the Red Devils.

Mount cost £60 million ($76 million) to acquire from Chelsea but has the versatility to play as a playmaker, wide forward, or center midfielder. According to Fernandes, he is still unsure of who will be selected to play at No. 10 in the upcoming season.

“No, we haven’t spoken about that decision. It’s the manager who makes that decision. Both of us can play in many roles… We are really happy to have him here, wherever he plays, as a 10 or 8 or wing. We can both do that. The most important thing is that we help the team succeed,” he told reporters.

“I said this a couple of years ago, that he [Mount] is one of the best players in the Premier League at the time and I hope he can do it again because he is a really good player and he is still really young – he has a long way to go. He is really good at pressing, he has a lot of energy, and really good on the ball. He has goals and assists in him too. He can create chances so we are expecting a lot from him but he is aware of that. He is at a big club and he knows the expectations on him will be big,” he added.

Fernandes sent Mount a humorous welcoming message by uploading two photos from a previous match in which United drew 1-1 with Chelsea at Old Trafford in the 2021-22 season. Mount’s enthusiasm and ferocity have now been praised by him, and he has sworn to defend his new teammate.

“We need players with that kind of aggression and passion, we need players to be like that in the games. These are the kind of players that I like to play against and even more to have in my side so I am happy he is here now. And now instead of me on the side of David, it’s me on the side of Mason defending him from someone else. Now he is on my side and I will do everything I can to defend him,” he said.

The midfield duo will face Borussia Dortmund at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sunday evening.

Declan Rice has said that his close buddy Mason Mount is overjoyed to have joined Manchester United, but that he had no influence on the midfielder’s choice to leave Chelsea.

Mount’s dramatic departure from Stamford Bridge was confirmed earlier this month, following a protracted contract squabble that resulted in his choice to join United.

Many expected the England internationals to create a long-term combination at Chelsea, with Rice frequently linked with a return to West London during his spell at West Ham.

Circumstances, however, dictated that both players lined up on opposing sides for their respective teams last Saturday, when United defeated Arsenal 2-0 in respective York.

‘I read loads of bits that said me and him were speaking saying that we’d always end up at the same club but it wasn’t like that at all,’ Rice told ESPN.

‘I’ve got to do what’s best for my career, Mase has got to do what’s best for his career.

‘We never really had that chat, I know he was going through a tough time at Chelsea with a few thing and of course I was there for him and he was there for me, but obviously my situation was very different compared to his.

‘We support each other we are very happy for each other. I spoke to him the other night after the game, he’s so happy to be at United and I’m so happy to be here at Arsenal.’

While Saturday’s loss in New York was discouraging for Arsenal’s revamped midfield, Mikel Arteta maintains that Rice, Kai Havertz, and Martin Odegaard have the physicality needed to succeed in the Premier League.

Arteta said: ‘We’re going to have to find the right balance as well, but a year ago Granit could never play that as an attacking midfielder. So let’s try to get the work done. It’s the first time we played with four players inside, and three of them had never played for us.

‘So three out of four, they never played together ever. So, tranquilo! Day-by-day, keep doing the right things, give people opportunity to settle them into the right things and we will be fine. You use a word that is ‘physical’. So if I put Granit and Kai and I ask you who is more physical? What would you say?

‘Kai is one metre 91, so it depends what you mean physical. Physical is (also) to run, running behind the forward, to tackle. It depends. So we will fit in with the qualities that we have, that’s for sure.

‘And the good thing is that we have options as well. When we have a game that is more physical, we can become very physical as well. We have the right options.’

Concerned about the “too many players” in Chelsea’s squad, Mauricio Pochettino emphasized the importance of resolving their futures this summer.

Chelsea has been actively selling players this summer, both to lower the size of their squad and to balance their books after spending almost £600 million ($775 million) during the previous two transfer windows.

They have already let go of 12 players, including stars like Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, and Mateo Kovacic. A number of other players, including Romelu Lukaku, Callum Hudson-Odoi, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, appear to be leaving Stamford Bridge as well.

According to reports, Chelsea is already planning to sell more than £200 million ($253 million) in order to pay for new signings like Moises Caicedo, Rayan Cherki, Paulo Dyabala, and Elye Wahi.

Manchester United responded to a viral video in which Mason Mount tells fans he would not autograph their shirts.

Mount signed the Red Devils from Chelsea in July for an initial fee of £55 million, and he made his debut against Leeds United in Oslo on Wednesday.

However, the midfielder has already become the topic of social media debate after a video surfaced of him denying the opportunity to sign shirts for supporters who have followed him since his arrival at Old Trafford.

“You know I ain’t signing it,” Mount said in the video. “I haven’t signed for the last three days so I don’t know why you lot keep coming back.”

Man Utd have now commented on the situation and have leapt to the defence of Mount.

“Unfortunately this kind of situation has become far too common. It’s the last thing Mason deserves after being so friendly with everyone he has come across since joining United,” the statement read.

“Professional autograph hunters are regularly pressuring United’s players to sign large quantities of items that that they then sell for hundreds of pounds.

“It has become an every day occurrence and a major problem at Carrington. These organised groups will block players’ cars and harass them as they arrive and leave their workplace. It is becoming really dangerous and you have to worry that it is only a matter of time before someone gets hurt.

“It also means that young fans, who just want to interact with their heroes, often miss out because players can’t stop to take pictures with them without having to engage with the groups.

“It’s a real frustration for everyone, security staff are in regular dialogue with the players around how to stop the problem. Action will definitely start to be taken if it continues to persist.”

A massive club, huge iconic players have played here, and I wanted to be a part of that from the beginning. Getting in early and ready for pre-season to start was a main objective of mine as well.”

Mount, who has been given the renowned No. 7 shirt at United, is confident he can have a significant impact on the Red Devils’ offensive line.

He added on his role in Erik ten Hag’s plans: “I’ve always seen myself as a midfielder or a number eight that can obviously get forward, attack, try and score goals, create goals, but also be able to do the other side as well and defend and help the team when we’re under pressure. The Blues eventually accepted a £55 million plus £5 million bid from Manchester United as Mount entered the final year of his Chelsea contract and no agreement had been made over a new one.

The 24-year-old completed a physical and completed the transfer at United’s Carrington training facility after reaching an agreement on personal terms. Prior to returning to Carrington for club media duties, a photographer also took pictures of Mount in Cheshire.

However, Mount wanted to speak directly to Chelsea supporters in a video message that was shared on Instagram before being officially introduced as a Manchester United player.

“Given the speculation over the last six months, this may not come as a surprise to you. But it doesn’t make it any easier to tell you that I’ve made the decision to leave Chelsea,” he said.

Mount explained that he thought supporters ‘deserve more than a written statement’.

He went on to add, “I know some of you won’t be happy with my decision, but it’s what right for me at this moment in my career. I joined Chelsea when I was six years old and we’ve been through a lot together – winning the [FA] Youth Cup, my player of the year awards, the Super Cup, the Club World Cup, and of course that unforgettable night when we won the Champions League.”

The player singled out staff at the Chelsea academy, as well Frank Lampard, Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter, his teammates, family and the fans. He also reserved special praise for the club’s backroom staff, referring to them as the ‘unsung heroes of Cobham’.
