Mp3bullet‘s aim is to enlighten the public on how our recently conducted Twitter poll expresses a real-life fanbase in the music industry.

As of the 16th of February, Mp3bullet conducted a Twitter poll of which Nigerian artist has the highest fanbase.

Correspondingly, the poll was placed in two categories, with a composition of four artistes each.

Of course, the 8 artistes whose names were placed on the poll are the leading Nigerian artistes;

Wizkid, Davido, Burna boy, Laycon, Olamide, Naira Marley, Rema, and Tiwa Savage.

Furthermore, a time frame of 24hours was set and the votes were cast.

What is a fanbase?

For an artiste, a fanbase means the people that will consume your music regularly and keep up to date with your music journey.

In this era of social media and online presence, one can look at a fanbase as the people that follow your artiste brand on different platforms and engage with your content regularly.

Particularly, almost every artiste has a fanbase to sustain their relevance and push their music beyond borders.

While this is the case of every artiste, this is no different from our recently conducted poll, and its real-life situation.

The big question now is, how?!!

At the inception of the poll, Laycon took an early lead for the first poll, before Wizkid’s fans overtook.

Uniquely, Laycon has been building a fanbase for himself right from the BBNaija days, with the name “Icons“.

It was through the supports of his fanbase he was able to sustain an incredible win in the BBNaija house.

Also, the presence of this same fanbase gave him an edge over Burna and Davido for this poll.

The reflection of what they did to him in a real-life experience is what they displayed with the poll.

It sure reflects to what extent a fan or fans can go for one.

Wizkid on the other hand has been steadily relevant for over a decade in the industry.

Likewise, he has built a universal reputation and world-wide fanbase named “Wizkid FC“.

Wizkid FC have been with him right from the “Holla at Your Boy” days, till date.

Recall when he became the first African artiste to sell out the o2 Arena London, in 2019.

Also, remember when his fans came through for him and he sold out Royal Albert Hall, London in 2017.

With these life instances, they prove themselves to be die-hard fans, ready to go any length for him.

It is no surprise they came through for him, despite it was just a Twitter poll with no award to it.

On the other hand, other artistes are not left out, as they also have a great fanbase, and that is the reason they were on the poll.

Now, Davido who came third on the poll may come as a surprise to many, well it shouldn’t be.

Reasons are;

His fanbase is not as radical and rugged as that of Wizkid, and Laycon.

While the 30BG goons are classified as the soft and wealthy boys, icons, and Wizkid FC are a product of the street.

This has been expressed over time in shows, functions, and in all manners/ forms.

However, Davido has proven to be a master in the game with many hit songs and albums produced.

The second poll:

This is where YBNL boss Olamide, and Marlian boss Naira Marley fall on.

Mp3bullet’s second poll is a result of the demand from fans who feel the need to put up those artistes, as they are counted worthy.

Although the poll was almost predictable, the outcome was a close count, with Olamide winning with 43% and Marley coming behind with 36.9% votes.

The two are street lords who have constantly delivered.

Moreover, Olamide is part of the people who assisted Marley to stardom, yet he competes strongly with him.

For Olamide, the streets have been with him since the Street OT days, YBNL days, and at some point was termed the voice of the street.

However, many people assume these “streets” are not on social media, but the result of the poll says it all.

On the other hand, Marley whose Marlians shut down Eko Convention some years back for his show depicts what they mean to him.

Though he is not the first artiste to shut down a show, the presence of his fans made more headlines that year.

However, with this poll, we know better that his supposed street fans are online and offline.

Moreover, much wasn’t expected from Rema considering he is just growing in the game.

While for Tiwa Savage, the presence of her soldiers was felt a bit, but not compared to the heavyweights.

This is the most important part, especially in the digital streaming era, streams metamorphose into coins directly to the artist’s bag, so more fans are equal to more money, it also a metric to measure how big a song has become.

Award;

Some awards categories are won via popularity contests, having a big fanbase simply helps in carting awards in a voting category, every artist at some point dreams to have as many awards to its name for the records or just as bragging rights.

Defense;

An artiste with a huge fanbase doesn’t need to talk or stress over trolls or unwarranted critics, the stans are there waiting to feast on anybody that comes close, for example, Wizkid FC or Icons can practically send someone into depression or deactivate from social media.

The rise of the Marlian fanbase could be attributed to the publicity that EFCC brought Naira Marley when they arrested him on alleged fraud charges.

Naira Marley who is known for his controversial behavior and music got himself a hardcore fanbase known as Marlians or No Belt Gang which surprisingly includes celebrities like DJ Cuppy, Toke Makinwa.

However, this fanbase has often been criticized as being an immoral one with no respect for law and order. They have also been criticized for their love of drugs, women, and rebellious lifestyle.

The fact that a large percent of this fanbase are people who either support or are into cybercrime doesn’t help much.

Their loyalty manifested a few days after Davido announced his social absence. They got Davido trending on social media even with no song, begging him to return to social media.

Wizkid rarely needs to do much promotion on his songs in Nigeria as he is certain his fanbase are always ready to do the job for him. One dare not criticize their fave, as they would come at you like a swarm of bees. Davido is a testament to that fact. On so many occasions, the DMW boss has being a victim of their vicious nature.

It looks harmless- just ordinary dancing steps. Great legwork and body movements. Very rhythmic and colorful. It’s just a fad. And like all other fads, it will come, be around for a while and then expire. Ar least, we’ve had other fads and none lasted forever. Fads come and fads go. Another one will soon replace this Marlian Fad. Inside life. Right?

I’m not willing to accept this Marlian craze as just a fad. It’s not only banal but it actually plays down social vices such as fraud and debauchery. It goes beyond some seemingly harmless dancing steps. There is a very subliminal but subtle indoctrination going on that encourages rebellion and makes a fraudulent lifestyle acceptable.

Just listen to the lyrics of Am I A Yahoo Boy and lines like “Maga to fun mi lowo steady se Karin wa ko ma daru” (my victim pays me steadily and our relationship should not be disrupted) and then wonder why we have young people adopting the yahoo lifestyle? Or the debasement of womanhood in his song Yanyanyan with lines like “Your bi*ch calling my phone, tell that bi*ch leave me alone, See your girlfriend is a loose girl…That’s why I don’t trust her o, Anything wey you do with am, Make you use your rubber” and wonder how guys will respect ladies? Or his song Mafo with lines such as ” Mo shi fe high, after one original tramadol extra” (one original tramadol extra is not enough, I still want to be high) and wonder why we have a drug epidemic among the youth?

On his song Tingasa, he sang” Obo meiji fun eyan kan, Oyan merin two Nikan, eyin meta bed Kan, prostitute yato si porn star, killer yato si gangster, government yato si fraudster ” (I shudder to translate this- it celebrates orgy which is bad enough but the real subliminal message here is how a killer is different from a gangster- in other words, it’s okay to be a gangster than be a killer while it’s ok to be a fraudster than be in government the same way it’s okay to be a pornstar than be a prostitute).

Wait for his song aptly titled Bad Influence and hear the lyrics ” Can’t tell me what to do, smoke weed, fuck girls, what the fuck I want, I just want to be happy that is all I want”. Or his track Bang Bang that glorifies gun violence with lyrics as ” Safety off, no taking time, I’ll take your life cause word you ain’t taking mine, them nights send shots and they move back, my niggas send shots and they shoot back, boom boom, bang bang for your boom bang”. Can you see this cannot just be a harmless fad? Or is it the song Soapy that glamourizes masturbation while referring to everybody as ‘ole’ ( Ole l’everybody)?

Opotoyi is one of his worst. It’s a song that promotes debauchery, drugs and debases womanhood. Just imagine “Kilo femu, o ni kin fun on ni coke, Coke ke!, Mi or dealer mi, oun sniff, emi gbegbo senu, Ganja” ( I asked him what he wanted and he said Coke. My dealer is sniffing, as for me, I have my marijuana”. The same song also has ” Awon omo soak away, won ni ki n suck am well if I go the club, mo ma take away” (using derogatory words for women -omo soakaway). I guess I’ll just stop here.

We can all see the Marlians rules all over. Marlians don’t use belts. Marlians don’t graduate. Marlians don’t take instructions. Marlians don’t have home training. Very subtle but potent messages. It looks like fun but the effect will be very visible soon- young people who drop out of school, people hooked on drugs, gun violence, and a very rebellious generation.

If all these are not enough for anyone who wants to salvage the next generation to show some umbrage, then maybe we are too far gone on our journey to a totally damaged society. This is why I can’t simply understand well-respected people (and even brands) identifying as Marlians and inadvertently supporting a deranged music artist’s mission to destroy what is left of the next generation.
