The nominees for the Premier League’s Player and Manager of the Month awards for 2024 September have been announced.

Eight players have been recognized for their outstanding performances during the month, and a combination of an expert panel and fan voting will determine the winners.

After reaching an agreement on a new one-year contract at Craven Cottage, Willian has re-signed for Fulham.

The 34-year-old had a medical with Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest, who were offering a two-year deal and higher pay, but he decided to stay in west London where his family feels at home.

Forest also gave him the option to complete his career at Olympiacos, a Greek powerhouse also controlled by shipping tycoon Evangelos Marinakis. However, Willian recently underwent a new medical at Fulham and agreed to new terms.

After allowing Willian to succeed upon his return to the English top division last season, Fulham manager Marco Silva is thought to have played a significant role in Willian’s choice to stay.

Willian led Fulham to a top-half finish in the league after they were promoted from the Championship with five goals and six assists in 27 games.

“I’m completely happy. Happy to sign one more year with Fulham,” Willian told FFC TV.

“Happy to continue the work that I did last season with all my teammates and the whole club. I think it’s a club that can do even better this season, so I’m happy to continue this amazing adventure.”

Willian is now anticipated to travel to the United States with the Fulham team for their preseason tour, where they will play Brentford, Aston Villa, and Chelsea over a two-week span.

Aleksandar Mitrovic has been given an eight-game ban for grabbing referee Chris Kavanagh during his team’s FA Cup loss to Manchester United.

The FA confirmed their verdict on Tuesday evening, with Cottagers manager Marco Silva being punished with a two-game touchline suspension for his emotional reaction to the incident.

Silva reacted angrily after his teammate Willian was shown a red card for handball on the line. After Kavanagh pointed to the spot, Mitrovic also confronted the official, eventually pushing him and earning a red card of his own. Later, he would bizarrely claim he was simply trying to get the referee’s attention.

“We claimed the standard punishment which would otherwise apply to Aleksandar Mitrović for the sending-off offence of violent conduct that he committed towards the match referee around the 72nd minute was clearly insufficient. The forward denied this, but it was upheld by the Regulatory Commission, and a three-match ban was imposed,” an FA statement read.

“This is in addition to the three-match ban he had already received for the red card offence. The forward separately admitted that his behaviour and language after being sent off was improper, abusive, insulting and threatening, and the Regulatory Commission imposed an additional two-match ban and £75,000 fine. In total, the Regulatory Commission has suspended Aleksandar Mitrović for eight matches. One of these has already been served, and therefore the forward will be unavailable for Fulham FC’s next seven matches.”

The announcement is a major setback for the Cottagers, who are presently in with a remote chance of playing in Europe next season.

Their offensive talisman is now set to miss games against the likes of Aston Villa, Manchester City and Liverpool. Responding to the decision, the FA indicated their desire to appeal the sanction, likely as they feel Mitrovic should face an even longer ban for his action.

Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic has expressed regret for the conduct that resulted in his dismissal after the team’s FA Cup quarterfinal loss to Manchester United.

At Old Trafford, Mitrovic gave Fulham the lead, and the Cottagers needed just 20 minutes of stoppage time to advance to the last four.

But then it all spectacularly collapsed for them. Willian was sent off for a deliberate handball on the goal line, which eventually led to a Manchester United penalty after a VAR review because the initial ruling from referee Chris Kavanagh was a corner.

Fulham manager Marco Silva lost control and was escorted from the field before a decision was reached one way or the other. Willian was sent off when Kavanagh noticed the handball and pursued Mitrovic after he had furiously addressed and shoved the official.

The Serbian striker then gave a slightly bizarre explanation as to why he did what he did.

“I was trying to get the referee’s attention,” he said. “But I appreciate that I should not have put my hands on him and I understand why he showed me a red card, my first in-game sending off for Fulham and my first since the 2015/16 season.

“I have accepted the three-match ban for my red card, I have spoken to Chris Kavanagh to apologise, and I have volunteered to accept a club fine. I now want to do what I can to put this incident behind me and get back to helping my team-mates on the pitch as soon as possible.”

Fulham’s nine-man defence crumbled after Bruno Fernandes‘ equalizing penalty kick for Manchester United. With his debut goal in English football, Marcel Sabitzer almost immediately gave the home team the lead before Fernandes added a second goal late in the game.

Manchester United are likely to receive punishment from the FA after being accused of improper conduct during their comeback victory over Fulham.

The Football Association has punished Manchester United after players swarmed referee Chris Kavanagh during their 3-1 comeback win against Fulham on Sunday. That happened when Willian used his hand to stop a Jadon Sancho effort, resulting in the Brazilian receiving a straight red card following a VAR review and surrendering a penalty.

As United players called for a penalty, the Video Assistant Referee reviewed the footage and advised that a spot kick should be awarded. Willian was then sent off, along with manager Marco Silva for his protests and then Aleksandar Mitrovic for his subsequent reaction in a manic few minutes.

The FA earlier this week confirmed they have charged both Mitrovic and Silva. Mitrovic faces a long ban for pushing the referee.

A statement released on Monday night read: “Fulham, Marco Silva and Aleksandar Mitrović have been charged following the incidents that took place in or around the 72nd minute of their tie against Manchester United in The FA Cup on Sunday 19 March.

“It’s alleged that Marco Silva used abusive and/or insulting words and/or gestures and/or behaviour towards the match referee; that he used abusive and/or insulting words towards the fourth official prior to his dismissal; and that he also used abusive and/or insulting words and/or gestures and/or behaviour towards the fourth official after being sent off.

“It’s further alleged that in throwing a water bottle in the direction of the assistant referee his behaviour was improper.”

The governing body also stated that Fulham failed to ensure that its players would act appropriately, and it has not yet made an announcement regarding the penalties that will be imposed.

The Dutchman led United to an undefeated month of February, defeating Crystal Palace, Leicester, and Leeds while also drawing with Leeds.

Cedric Soares, an Arsenal defender who has had very few playing opportunities at the Emirates, has agreed to join Fulham on loan for the rest of the season.

The 31-year-old has made just two substitute appearances in the Premier League so far this season, and he has only made two additional appearances in cup competitions.

ESPN report that a deal has been agreed for Soares to move across London on a six-month loan with no option or obligation to buy in the summer.

The defender’s Arsenal contract is up in 2024, and his future with the club will be decided after the end of the current season.

According to an ESPN report, Fulham will pay Soares‘ entire salary, which is close to £100,000 a week.

In January 2020, Soares made a temporary loan move to Arsenal from Southampton. He then made the move permanent that summer and made 59 appearances for the team in all competitions.

His opportunities have been more constrained than ever this season due to competition from Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu for the right-back spot and Kieran Tierney and Oleksandr Zinchenko for the left-back spot.
