The club have confirmed Manchester United midfielder Marcel Sabitzer has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a knee injury.

Sabitzer, who transferred from Bayern Munich to United on loan in January, has three goals in 18 games for the team in 2023.

Initially, the Austrian international was brought in to serve as a backup for Christian Eriksen, who had an injury of his own during the FA Cup victory against Reading in January.

Given that his loan agreement ended at the conclusion of the season and there was no provision for a buyout when the transaction was finalized, Sabitzer may have played his final match for United.

He has pleased boss Erik ten Hag since coming, but it has not yet been decided if United would attempt to make the signing permanent.

Thomas Tuchel, the new Bayern Munich coach, and Sabitzer are scheduled to speak, although United may revisit the issue as they attempt to bolster their roster during the summer. To finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League again the following year, United needs two victories.

United confirmed the news of Sabitzer’s setback with a statement posted on the club’s official website on Monday, stating: “Marcel Sabitzer has suffered a meniscal injury which will, unfortunately, rule him out for the remainder of the season.

“Everyone at the club is disappointed to lose Marcel’s services, as the Reds chase a strong finish to the season in the Premier League and FA Cup, and we are grateful for his contribution to our progress so far.

“We would like to wish Marcel well in having a speedy recovery.”

In Thursday’s 2-2 draw with Sevilla, Erik ten Hag claimed he was forced to substitute both Bruno Fernandes and Antony because the referee had informed him both players were on the verge of receiving red cards.

With two goals from Marcel Sabitzer in the first 20 minutes, United quickly took control of the game and raced to a 2-0 lead. However, late own goals from Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire forced a 2-2 draw, setting up a tense second leg away from home the following week.

Fernandes, Antony, and starting striker Anthony Martial were all replaced during the second half, and during the game, fans angrily questioned the three substitutions.

In his post-match press conference, Ten Hag argued he was left with no choice but to withdraw Fernandes and Antony after the referee warned him that the duo were close to being shown second yellow cards.

“I had to make them,” Ten Hag argued. “There was no other way. Rapha [Varane] was injured, that was the first I had to make. And then Anthony Martial, first start after a long period, so we had to make him on the 60.

“Then Bruno: I got the warning from the refs, he was short before a second booking and the same for Antony dos Santos. So I had to make the subs, I had no other choice.”

When Lisandro Martinez fell late in the game and was carried off the field by the Argentine’s international colleagues from Sevilla, United had no replacements left after also seeing Varane limp off at halftime.

All the unwanted changes took their toll on United, with Ten Hag telling BT Sport: “We had the game in our hand. We were 2-0 up and should’ve scored three or four – the game was totally on us. Unlucky moments with injuries, we had to make some subs with injuries then we lost the control.

“We conceded two own goals, that’s bad luck but we have to deal with it. We have to learn and have to kill the game but everything is open.

“When we didn’t get the third and got some injuries we lost the rhythm in the game. We played well in the first half with a lot of belief, scored two great goals for Sabitzer and we could’ve scored even more, then after half time we lost control of the game.

“I know we can do better with these players in the last part of the game and we needed to be more composed, it was not a nice night.”

Having the six-time Europa League champions down 2-0, United collapsed horribly in the second half by giving up two odd, late own goals. After the game, Sabitzer, whose goals had given his team what appeared to be a dominant advantage, cut a dejected figure.

 The Austrian told BT Sport: “It’s difficult to find the words. We should have finished them off. We had the chances. Unfortunately we gave easy goals away. We can’t concede these type of goals. Two stupid goals and that’s not what we wanted. Very frustrated. You cannot concede like this. It’s not focusing until the end. 2-0 up at home and you have to get it done.”

Sabitzer was one of the stars of the game as he carried on his incredible run of form. While he concentrated on United’s poor game management that evening, there was undoubtedly an element of bad luck at work as Sevilla scored twice with shots that were clearly off-target after Lisandro Martinez’s injury reduced the Reds to 10 men.

Because of United’s busy schedule, there isn’t much time to reflect. They go to Nottingham Forest on Sunday for a league match before flying to Sevilla on Thursday night to complete their quarterfinal match.

Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag has revealed that influential midfielder Christian Eriksen is nearing a comeback from injury.

The Danish international has been sidelined since January after being tackled by Andy Carroll during United’s FA Cup victory against Reading at Old Trafford.

Eriksen was previously expected to be sidelined until the end of April, potentially into May, but has recently shared positive anecdotes on social media about his progress in rehabbing the injury.

Although the 31-year-old is unlikely to face his old team Brentford on Wednesday, Ten Hag acknowledged in his news conference before the game that Eriksen is back in full squad training and will soon return to offer some much-needed talent in the midfield.

“Not for tomorrow but he’s returning on the pitch. He’s returned to team training today, so we have to see now how quickly he can make the progress,” the Dutchman said.

“Two quality players,” he continued when asked about Eriksen’s return coinciding with Casemiro’s four-match suspension ending. “The midfield department, games will be decided always in midfield, when you miss two quality players it’s clear. “But you have a squad, if you don’t have them you still have to win.”

Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic has expressed regret for the conduct that resulted in his dismissal after the team’s FA Cup quarterfinal loss to Manchester United.

At Old Trafford, Mitrovic gave Fulham the lead, and the Cottagers needed just 20 minutes of stoppage time to advance to the last four.

But then it all spectacularly collapsed for them. Willian was sent off for a deliberate handball on the goal line, which eventually led to a Manchester United penalty after a VAR review because the initial ruling from referee Chris Kavanagh was a corner.

Fulham manager Marco Silva lost control and was escorted from the field before a decision was reached one way or the other. Willian was sent off when Kavanagh noticed the handball and pursued Mitrovic after he had furiously addressed and shoved the official.

“I was trying to get the referee’s attention,” he said. “But I appreciate that I should not have put my hands on him and I understand why he showed me a red card, my first in-game sending off for Fulham and my first since the 2015/16 season.

“I have accepted the three-match ban for my red card, I have spoken to Chris Kavanagh to apologise, and I have volunteered to accept a club fine. I now want to do what I can to put this incident behind me and get back to helping my team-mates on the pitch as soon as possible.”

Fulham’s nine-man defence crumbled after Bruno Fernandes‘ equalizing penalty kick for Manchester United. With his debut goal in English football, Marcel Sabitzer almost immediately gave the home team the lead before Fernandes added a second goal late in the game.

“It’s alleged that both clubs failed to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and/or refrained from provocative behaviour, and it’s also alleged that Manchester United FC failed to ensure its players refrained from violent behaviour. Manchester United and Crystal Palace FC have until Monday 13 February to respond.”

On Saturday, Crystal Palace will play host to Brighton in the Premier League, while on Sunday, Manchester United will play at Elland Road against Leeds United.

“Of course, he did only one session but you can see he’s a very fit player and I didn’t have different expectations coming from Bayern Munich, German, their fitness is always good,” Ten Hag said. “I think he is ready to play.

“I think he’s a really smart player and I think we gave him some guidance but he knows what to do, he knows the job.”

Ten Hag added that United must do better against Palace, who they recently fell to a late 1-1 draw against after Michael Olise netted a stoppage-time free-kick, and went as far to ‘demand’ a better showing.

“We know a lot [about] them, they know a lot about us, we were really unhappy with our game at Crystal Palace so I demand a much better performance than in London, so we have a good chance to win.”

United announced Sabitzer’s squad number on Thursday, with the No15 most recently worn by Andreas Pereira.

The good news for Sabitzer is that number 7 is now available at Old Trafford following Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure, and number 24 is also available.

9 is occupied by Anthony Martial, 10 by Marcus Rashford and 18 by Casemiro.

If none of those strike Sabitzer’s fancy, he may choose to wear number 13 or number 15, the latter of which was last worn by Andreas Pereira prior to his departure to Fulham last summer.

It then becomes a matter of whether Sabitzer wants to take on a number of 40 or higher because United have a number of other numbers filled by youth players on loan.

Manchester United have announced the loan signing of midfielder Marcel Sabitzer on loan until the end of the 2022–23 season.

The Red Devils were forced to enter the market late in the January transfer window as it was revealed that Christian Eriksen will be out for up to four months with an ankle injury.

According to sources, the club began talks with Sabitzer on Tuesday about a possible loan move to Old Trafford for the duration of the season and were able to complete the deal before the 12 pm deadline after gaining an extension.

Speaking to the club’s official website after completing the move, Sabitzer said: “Sometimes in life you have to make quick and important decisions. From the moment I heard about this opportunity I knew it was right for me. I am a competitive player; I want to win and help the club achieve its aims this season.
