Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes stands out as one of the leading contenders after producing a sensational performance in his side’s 5-2 victory over Ipswich. The Portuguese midfielder scored a hat-trick and provided an assist as United secured their first league win of the new campaign.

Manchester City’s Rayan Cherki has also enjoyed an impressive start and earns recognition for his contributions during the opening weeks of the season.

Chelsea have two representatives on the shortlist, with Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro both making the cut. Palmer has continued his strong form under new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, while Joao Pedro has also impressed early in the campaign.

Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori is another nominee, joining Brentford midfielder Mamadou Sangaré and Newcastle United forward Yoane Wissa on the eight-man list.

Wissa has made an immediate impact since joining Newcastle, registering a goal and an assist in his opening two Premier League appearances. His contribution included a goal during Newcastle’s 2-0 victory away to Tottenham Hotspur.

One of the standout stories, meanwhile, comes from newly promoted Hull City. Goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis has been rewarded for helping the Tigers make a perfect start to life in the Premier League, keeping clean sheets in each of their first two matches.

The eight nominees are:

Riccardo Calafiori — Arsenal

Rayan Cherki — Manchester City

Bruno Fernandes — Manchester United

Cole Palmer — Chelsea

Joao Pedro — Chelsea

Mamadou Sangaré — Brentford

Konstantinos Tzolakis — Hull City

Yoane Wissa — Newcastle United

With several players already making strong statements at the beginning of the campaign, the outcome promises to be a closely contested battle for the first individual Premier League award of the new season.

While several teams across the continent made major moves, the Premier League once again dominated the spending charts. English clubs accounted for all five of the biggest spenders, led by Manchester City, whose summer investment surpassed the €500 million mark.

Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and Aston Villa also crossed the €300 million threshold, highlighting the financial strength of English football ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Here are the five clubs that spent the most during the summer window:

1. Manchester City — €526.2 million

Manchester City emerged as the biggest spender of the summer after splashing approximately €526.2 million on new arrivals.

The club embarked on a significant rebuild following Pep Guardiola’s departure, with Enzo Fernández becoming the headline signing after joining from Chelsea for a British-record-equalling £125 million.

City also invested heavily in Elliot Anderson and several other additions as they look to reshape the squad and return to the top of domestic and European football.

2. Chelsea — €406.7 million

Chelsea maintained their reputation as one of Europe’s biggest spenders, committing around €406.7 million to new players during the window.

Their most expensive move was the reported £117 million acquisition of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, while a number of other additions were made as the club sought to strengthen several areas of the squad.

The spending comes after a disappointing 2025/26 campaign and reflects Chelsea’s determination to bounce back strongly in the new season.

3. Tottenham Hotspur — €366.35 million

Tottenham were also heavily involved in the summer market, spending an estimated €366.35 million on reinforcements.

The North London side made several eye-catching additions, with Sandro Tonali, Savinho and Mateus Fernandes among the players brought in.

Their aggressive approach signals a clear desire to transform the squad and give the club a stronger chance of competing for major honours during the 2026/27 campaign.

4. Newcastle United — €313 million

Newcastle United rounded off the list of clubs spending more than €300 million, with the Magpies investing approximately €313 million in their squad.

The club undertook a major recruitment drive as it looked to strengthen after losing key players to some of Europe’s biggest sides.

The level of investment further underlines Newcastle’s ambition to remain among the Premier League’s leading clubs while also making an impact on the European stage.

5. Aston Villa — €300.2 million

Aston Villa completed the top five after spending roughly €300.2 million on new signings.

Villa faced the challenge of replacing Morgan Rogers following his big-money move to Chelsea but responded by making significant investments of their own, including the signing of Johan Manzambi.

Their spending shows that the club remains serious about competing at the upper end of English football and building a squad capable of sustaining its ambitions across domestic and European competitions.

Manchester City have completed the blockbuster signing of Enzo Fernández from Chelsea in a £125 million deal that matches the British transfer record.

The move brings an unexpected twist to the final stages of the transfer window, with Chelsea agreeing to part ways with the Argentina international despite their own efforts to secure a replacement before the deadline.

Manchester City Complete British Record Deal for Enzo Fernández

Fernández has signed a five-year contract with City, joining a midfield that has already undergone significant investment this summer. His arrival follows the additions of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116 million and Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille for £86 million, taking City’s spending on midfielders to a staggering £327 million.

The situation became even more complicated for Chelsea after their attempt to bring in Lamine Camara from Monaco collapsed late in the window. The Blues had reportedly reached an agreement worth £47 million for the Senegalese midfielder after previously seeing an offer rejected earlier in the day.

Camara was expected to sign a six-year deal with an option for another season, but Monaco ultimately pulled out of the agreement as the deadline approached. The development left Chelsea scrambling for alternatives after their plans to replace Fernández were thrown into uncertainty.

The drama was further complicated by Everton’s efforts to complete a deal for Folarin Balogun. Despite prolonged negotiations, that transfer also fell through shortly after midnight, leaving Chelsea unable to bring in the midfielder they had identified as Fernández’s replacement.

None of that, however, was enough to derail Fernández’s move to Manchester City. The 25-year-old now becomes one of the most expensive players in British football history, matching the £125 million fee Liverpool paid Newcastle for Alexander Isak last year.

For City, the signing adds another high-profile midfielder to an already heavily reinforced squad and represents another major statement of intent ahead of the new campaign.

Fernández now has the chance to work under Pep Guardiola and compete for more major honours, while Chelsea are left to deal with the consequences of losing one of their key midfielders without securing the replacement they had lined up.

It has been a dramatic deadline-day story, but Fernández’s next chapter will now unfold in Manchester, where expectations will be enormous from the moment he steps onto the pitch.

Arsenal Set the Tone

The Premier League champions looked determined to carry their momentum into the new campaign. Arsenal’s intensity and organisation repeatedly disrupted City’s rhythm, while their efficiency in front of goal turned the match into a comfortable victory.

Calafiori Makes Instant Impact

Riccardo Calafiori enjoyed a dream start after finding the net just 24 seconds into the game. His early goal immediately put Arsenal in the driving seat and gave the Gunners the confidence to dictate the remainder of the contest.

Maresca Gets an Early Reality Check

The defeat provided Enzo Maresca with a difficult introduction to competitive football as Manchester City manager. City struggled against Arsenal’s high press and compact defensive structure, highlighting several areas the new boss will need to improve before the Premier League gets underway.

Arsenal’s New Arrivals Deliver

Arteta’s summer additions also made their presence felt. Christos Tzolis marked his debut with an assist for Kai Havertz, while Calafiori capped his performance with the opening goal, suggesting Arsenal’s recruits could quickly become important pieces of the squad.

Momentum Ahead of the Title Defence

While the Community Shield alone cannot predict how the Premier League season will unfold, Arsenal’s performance offered an encouraging early signal. The champions looked sharp, confident and tactically prepared, giving their title rivals plenty to think about before the league campaign begins.

The Premier League side released a detailed statement shortly after Manchester City unveiled Maresca as Pep Guardiola’s successor, insisting they were disappointed by the manner of his exit and the timing of his decision.

According to Chelsea, concerns first emerged in the autumn of 2025 after Maresca informed the club that he could have an opportunity to replace Guardiola at the Etihad. The Blues claimed it soon became obvious that the Italian was determined to take the job despite still being tied to a long-term contract.

The club maintained that Maresca’s unexpected resignation in December forced an unwanted managerial change during a crucial stage of the season, something they believe contributed to a disappointing 2025/26 campaign.

The statement read:

“In Autumn last year, the Club was informed by our former Head Coach that there might be an opportunity for him to succeed Pep Guardiola at the end of the season. It became clear to us that it was his strong desire to succeed Guardiola and that he was fully committed to pursuing the opportunity, despite the fact he was under a long-term contract which he had no right to terminate. In December 2025, our Head Coach unexpectedly and abruptly resigned from his position.

Obviously, we felt let down as we believed that his head and heart were focused on another club and another opportunity, despite having just arrived at Chelsea the year before. No club wants to change its head coach midway through a season. However, in light of his decision not to continue fulfilling his responsibilities through to the end of the season, the Club was left with no choice but to protect our players, our supporters, and the Badge and accept his resignation.

In the circumstances and given the mutual respect between clubs, a confidential settlement has been reached with Manchester City, which includes the payment of compensation. A confidential settlement has also been reached with the former Head Coach under which he will pay compensation.

Looking forward to next season, in Xabi Alonso, we have a Manager who has an exceptional football mind and is a professional of the highest integrity. He has all the attributes to deliver the success the Club’s supporters deserve and expect.”

Chelsea also confirmed that confidential compensation agreements had been reached with both Manchester City and Maresca following his departure.

Meanwhile, Maresca has accepted responsibility for his exit, admitting that the decision to resign was entirely his own. The Italian also apologised to Chelsea supporters, acknowledging that leaving in the middle of the season disrupted the club’s plans, while expressing his excitement at returning to Manchester City, where he previously worked as Guardiola’s assistant.

Attention now turns to the 2026/27 campaign, with Chelsea preparing for a fresh chapter under Xabi Alonso, while Manchester City begin life after Guardiola with Maresca tasked with building on the club’s recent era of success.

He said:

“At the end of December 2025, I made the difficult decision to leave Chelsea. The decision was only mine. My resignation from Chelsea opened a path for me to join Manchester City, which is a club I knew very well. I am ecstatic that I have now joined Manchester City. I recognise that my departure from Chelsea in the middle of the season caused disruption for the club and I apologise for that. It was neither my intention nor my wish. I was treated well by everyone at Chelsea and together we achieved great success and memories that I will always treasure. I am grateful to the club, the owners and the fans for giving me the opportunity.”

Maresca stressed that the decision to resign was entirely his own, while thanking Chelsea’s owners, players, staff and supporters for their support during his spell in charge.

He added that the memories and achievements from his time at Stamford Bridge would always remain special to him.

Chelsea, however, offered a different perspective in their official response. The club claimed Maresca’s attention had shifted towards Manchester City months before he eventually stepped down, insisting his resignation played a significant role in the team’s disappointing campaign.

The London club also disclosed that both Maresca and Manchester City agreed to pay compensation as part of a confidential settlement reached following his exit.

Maresca now returns to the Etihad Stadium, where he previously worked as Pep Guardiola’s assistant, with Manchester City handing him a three-year contract as Guardiola’s successor.

The breakthrough comes after several rounds of negotiations, with City increasing their proposal to bridge the gap between the two clubs. The 23-year-old has now been granted permission to travel to New York on Friday for a medical, although the transfer remains subject to the completion of personal terms.

Anderson is currently with the England national football team at the FIFA World Cup being staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico, making the tournament his immediate priority before completing the move.

Nottingham Forest had been determined to maximise the value of any deal, reportedly seeking a guaranteed transfer fee that would surpass the £125 million British transfer record paid by Liverpool F.C. to Newcastle United F.C. for Alexander Isak last summer.

Earlier this month, reports revealed that City had tabled a verbal offer worth £106 million upfront, with performance-related add-ons capable of pushing the overall package beyond £120 million. That proposal followed an opening bid that had already been rejected by Forest.

Anderson has enjoyed a remarkable rise since joining Nottingham Forest in 2023 in a deal valued at £35 million, which also saw Odysseas Vlachodimos move in the opposite direction, with the goalkeeper valued at £15 million as part of the transaction.

Since arriving at the City Ground, the midfielder has made 92 appearances, featuring in every Premier League match during the 2025/26 campaign while contributing four goals and four assists.

His impressive club form has also translated onto the international stage. After making his England debut in September, Anderson started World Cup fixtures against Croatia and Ghana and is expected to retain his place for Saturday’s meeting with Panama.

Forest are already planning for life after the midfielder’s departure, with reports suggesting Lucas Bergvall of Tottenham Hotspur F.C. has emerged as one of the leading candidates to replace him should the transfer be completed.

Real Madrid have officially confirmed the signing of Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva, completing one of the most surprising and high-profile transfers of the summer window as the playmaker departs Manchester City on a free transfer.

Real Madrid Complete Free Transfer Signing of Bernardo Silva

The 31-year-old joins Los Blancos after nearly a decade at the heart of Manchester City’s dominance in English football, bringing his experience, creativity, and winning mentality to the Santiago Bernabéu.

The move also signals the beginning of a new project under returning manager José Mourinho, whose presence reportedly played a decisive role in convincing Silva to choose Madrid ahead of other European giants.

Sources suggest that Mourinho’s appointment earlier this month accelerated Madrid’s recruitment plans, with the club eager to rebuild after two consecutive seasons without major silverware.

Silva was understood to be a target for several top European sides, including FC Barcelona and Atlético Madrid, both of whom reportedly held interest in the Portuguese star. However, neither club pushed forward with improved offers once Madrid entered pole position, effectively clearing the path for the deal.

In an official statement, Real Madrid announced:

“Real Madrid C. F. and Bernardo Silva have reached an agreement for him to become a Real Madrid player for the next two seasons, until June 30, 2028.”

The club views the signing as a key step in reshaping the squad around experienced, elite-level winners capable of delivering immediate impact in both domestic and European competitions.

👋 ¡Bienvenido, @BernardoCSilva ! 👋 pic.twitter.com/FYU1TiqJAS

— Real Madrid C.F. (@realmadrid) June 17, 2026

Silva’s arrival is expected to add technical quality, versatility, and leadership to a midfield already undergoing transition. Known for his intelligence on the ball and consistency in high-pressure matches, the Portuguese international arrives with a reputation as one of the Premier League’s most reliable performers over the past decade.

For Real Madrid, the signing represents both intent and ambition — a clear statement that the club is moving aggressively to return to the top of European football.

As the Mourinho era begins to take shape, Bernardo Silva now becomes one of its first major centrepieces, with expectations already high at the Bernabéu.

The speculation emerged after comments attributed to Real Madrid presidential hopeful Enrique Riquelme suggested that Haaland had already agreed to join the Spanish giants.

The reports quickly gained traction across Spanish media, sparking fresh debate about the striker’s future despite his recent contract commitments at the Etihad Stadium.

Manchester City, however, have moved swiftly to shut down the rumours.

In an official statement, the Premier League champions insisted that no such agreement exists and stressed that Haaland remains fully committed to the club under a long-term contract.

The club statement read,

“The stories which have emerged from Spain regarding the future of Erling Haaland are false. There is NO chance of this happening and there is no contractual clause to enable it. We are considering legal action.”

Adding further weight to the club’s position, Haaland’s representative, Rafaela Pimenta, is also understood to have rejected the claims, maintaining that no discussions or agreements involving Real Madrid have taken place.

The response leaves little doubt about City’s stance. Having secured Haaland on a landmark contract extension running until 2034, the club views him as a cornerstone of its long-term sporting project and has no intention of entertaining transfer offers.

Since arriving in Manchester, Haaland has established himself as one of world football’s most feared forwards, playing a pivotal role in the club’s domestic and European successes.

His goalscoring exploits have naturally attracted interest from some of the sport’s biggest clubs, but City remain adamant that the Norwegian international is staying put.

For now, the message from the Etihad is clear: Haaland remains central to Manchester City’s plans, and talk of a move to Madrid is being treated as nothing more than speculation.
