In an unprecedented and unexpected collaboration, Nigerian singer Kcee and American pop band One Republic have announced their partnership for a remix of Kcee’s hit song “Ojapiano.”

The collaboration was revealed through social media channels, with Kcee sharing a video snippet of their recording sessions.

During a discussion on Naija Info 102.7 FM, Kcee delved into the narrative behind the joint project with One Republic. He recounted how the American pop ensemble reached out to him and invited him to their recording studio, which he found impressive.

Additionally, Kcee shared an encounter with the renowned American DJ and Major Lazer producer, Diplo, who expressed interest in collaborating with him. Diplo even provided Kcee with a beat and expressed a desire to include him on a track, further highlighting the growing international recognition of Nigerian artists.

The Nigerian singer recounted the story saying, “Ojapiano was blowing up and becoming viral. I was in America doing one or two shows. I checked my DM and I saw a message from One Republic. Titled “Koo Koo Fun,” the single which sounds like an Amapiano banger was first announced by Major League DJz via Instagram Reel posts with one featuring what looks like behind the scene clips of a music video for the record.

On the 14th of July, Wizkid dropped “Sounds from the Other Side“, his third and most underrated studio album.

In 2017, there was tangible concern about Wizkid’s career trajectory. T

he world had become Starboy’s domain following the massive success of “One Dance,” the Drake-headlining chart-topper, and a landmark major label deal in the making. In a typical Nigerian manner, we wondered what would come next.

Wizkid had a significant challenge. On the one hand, he needed to live up to the expectations and present himself in a way that would appeal to audiences all over the world.

On the other hand, he was also trying to please us, the home crowd that had propelled him to international fame.

Having established himself as the leading voice in African pop music with his legendary first album, “Superstar,” and a slew of subsequent hit singles, Wizkid’s sophomore album, “Ayo,” was not well received.

It received harsh criticism for lacking imagination, with reviewers highlighting the lack of depth and praising the uplifting song “Ojuelegba” as the album’s primary saving grace.

However, the album managed to side-step the much dreaded sophomore slump thanks to hits like “Jaiye Jaiye”, “In My Bed” and “Show you the Money”.

Wizkid’s third project, “Sounds from the Other Side,” followed an experimental path, and it received a similar response to his previous album.

Wizkid broadened the scope of his musical inspirations, which include highlife, reggae, modern, and electronic dance music.

He refined the alchemy and collaborated with a wide spectrum of strong hitters to deliver a well-combined blend.

Years later, Wizkid added to his discography with an EP, “Soundman Vol 1” and a fourth album, “Made In Lagos”.

“Made in Lagos” was a better project than SFTOS but it built on the foundation laid on SFTOS.

In 2022, SFTOS clocks 5 years and to celebrate the moment, Mp3bullet.ng compiles a list of 5 songs from the project to put on replay.

Sweet Love

“Sweet Love” opens with a guitar thumping amid shakers and wooden drums.

The arrangement is changed with a drum roll and a bass guitar humming beautifully through the set piece as Wizkid bellows ‘All I Need Is One Love.’

Although the sway is not explicitly stated, the lure is melody, and the charm is refinement, as is typical of African music, even when the themes repeat themselves.

Wiz expertly combines the two, using Bob Marley’s notorious appeal for world peace for conceited self-aggrandizement in a way that only Baba Nla can.

Wiz moves through the song with glee the entire time, producing a feel-good tune that is designed for sipping a great pina colada someplace in Lagos Island.

The sound of this song is unlike anything else on the album.

African Bad Gyal

With a raucous beat to work with, WizKid shines bright on this song and proves to be the badass we all know and love.

Chris Brown delivers these powerful vocals to complement the loud music, matching (and possibly surpassing) the energy of WizKids. You were mistaken if you believed Chris would have trouble capturing the authentic Nigerian vibe of the song.

One for Me

On ‘One For Me’, the self-proclaimed StarBoy recruited American rapper Ty Dolla Sign.

In this song, Ty channels his classic R&B persona and sounds just like the lead singer of an old-school R&B band. Since he is in charge of creating the chorus for this song, he made care to create something unforgettable.

Throughout this song, WizKid sounds like he is celebrating as he tells his sweetheart that she makes him incredibly happy.

Since Wiz usually writes his own songs, it sounds really good to hear him this time around sort of taking on the role of the guy getting set up.

Naughty Ride

The tenderness of “Naughty Ride” makes it suitable for playing in a variety of situations. The song has a fantastic rhythm and is quite addictive to listen to.

This song has a lot of Naija swagger, but it also has components that make one think of a great R&B song.

More than anything, this song demonstrates WizKids’ capacity to combine a variety of musical genres to produce a cohesive sound.

Come Closer

This is not just the best song on the album, but it is also one of the best songs of 2017.

The way Wiz moves through the Dance-hall-inspired composition “Come Closer” with such a carefree disposition gives the impression that there were positive feelings present throughout the entire recording process.

The cadence he uses in his verses is one of the song’s strong points, as he effortlessly convinces his lady of his superstar status.

Drake was not necessary for this song, but the good news is that he did not in any way overshadow Wizkid. This is ‘Controlla’ Drake, so people will find his part very enjoyable.

Yemi Alade, a Nigerian singer, received two Grammy nominations, one in the “Best Global Music Album” category for Angelique Kidjo’s “Mother Nature” and another in the “Best Latin Rock Album” category for Bomba Estero’s “Deja.”

Nigerian singer Tems also got two nominations in the “Best Global Music Album” category, with Wizkid’s ‘Made in Lagos Deluxe” and the “Best Global Music Performance” category, with Wizkid’s ‘Essence’.

A Summer classic, “Own It” followed the massive success of Burna’s fourth album African Giant and also served as the first single off Stormzy’s own project, Heavy Is The Head. 

Pop Smoke ft. Burna Boy – Enjoy Yourself [Remix] (2020)

American Drill superstar Pop Smoke passed at the age of 20, ending a life and career that was headed for greatness.

However, family and friends have made efforts to immortalize him, and one of such is the release of his first posthumous album Shoot For The Stars, Aim For The Moon which featured iconic artists and buzzing names like 50 Cent and Roddy Ricch.

On the deluxe, Nigerian stars Davido and Burna Boy feature, the latter putting in an impressive shift with his rapping on “Enjoy Yourself,” a chill bop driven by the baritones of Pop and Burna.  

Jorja Smith ft. Burna Boy – Be Honest (2019)

British R&B and Pop artist Jorja Smith collaborated on African Giant’s “Gum Body,” a fan favorite that flexed Burna’s prowess with romantic bops.

The favor was then returned on (again, a love duet) “Be Honest,” released weeks after AG.

It was the singer’s first single after the Grammy-nominated album Lost & Found (2018).

In June, the song went platinum in France, hours after it was announced that Burna Boy had topped Billboard’s list of 15 Sub-Saharan African artists, based on global views.

Major Lazer ft. Burna Boy – All My Life (2018)

Major Lazer has long revealed an interest in the sounds coming out of Africa. Two years ago, they concretized this with the release of Africa Is The Future, a tape that featured some of the best artists from Africa.

Burna Boy –who since then has featured on Beyoncé’s tape similarly, on a track of his own– featured on that tape, on “All My Life,” a gritty record which espoused on his unique life experiences (“before I turned twenty one I was already savaged out), sung authoritatively over the electronic flourishes of Major Lazer.

Mahalia ft. Burna Boy – Simmer (2019)

Off UK singer Mahalia’s debut EP Love and Compromise came “Simmer,” a song that’s been described as “effortlessly infectious, diaphanous, and iridescent.”

Over a warm production with splashes of Reggaeton and Reggae, Mahalia and Burna Boy play opposite ends of a lover duo, detailing a relationship that will be less than ideal if more’s demanded than given.

J Hus ft. Burna Boy – Play Play (2020)

When J Hus came out of prison to release an album, that body of work was ostensibly personal, packing minutes of introspection via Hus’ trademark delivery.

Although a marked difference from his earlier fusions with Afro Pop, J Hus still teamed with collaborator and friend Burna Boy for “Play Play,” a record which, as the title suggests, is a breezy fun record held down by two of the most commanding musical voices we know.

DJ Snake ft. Burna Boy– No Option (2019)

Rihanna might have wanted the beat for DJ Snake’s “No Option” (from Carte Blanche) but there’s no doubt Burna Boy rode the production perfectly.

No doubt Reggae is a most influential genre to Burna and over a thumping Dubstyle beat with visceral drums and bass, the Nigerian superstar excites, talking his sh*t as usual.

DADJU ft. Burna Boy – Donne-moi l’accord

Late 2019, French singer and songwriter DADJU put out a record with Burna Boy, off his Poison album.

“Donne-moi l‘accord” is produced by Kel P and on the bouncy beat, both artists trade braggadocio lines, a narrative held on the video. For context, the French title loosely translates to “give me the agreement.”

Fall Out Boy ft. Burna Boy – Sunshine Riptide

Now, this is one collaboration that stunned virtually everyone. I mean… Fall Out Boy…and Burna Boy…? It turns out Pete Wentz (band vocalist and bassist) was a Burna fan.

In an interview with HMV.com, Pete explained: “I’m a big fan of the scene that’s happening with hip-hop in Lagos, with him and Mr Eazi.

So we hit him up and just let him know that we are fans. The rest came together pretty easily.
