Super Eagles shot-stopper Maduka Okoye has been officially appointed as an ambassador of Enugu State by Governor Peter Mbah in recognition of his achievements on the football field and his commitment to empowering young people through sports.

The honour was announced during Okoye’s courtesy visit to the Lion Building on Tuesday, June 24, 2025. During the meeting, discussions centred on collaborative efforts to use sports as a catalyst for youth development and economic transformation in the state.

Governor Mbah praised the Udinese goalkeeper for his outstanding performances on both local and global stages, describing him as “a proud son of Enugu.” He further revealed that Okoye intends to establish a charitable foundation and a football academy in the state initiatives the government fully supports.

“It was a pleasure welcoming Super Eagles and Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye to the Lion Building today,” the governor shared. “A proud son of Enugu, he continues to shine on both national and international platforms, and he is eager to give back to his roots.”

Governor Mbah also pledged to allocate land for the proposed football academy and extended a personal invitation to Okoye to participate in the upcoming Enugu International Marathon.

“In honour of his accomplishments and his commitment to youth development, I am proud to appoint him as an ambassador of Enugu State. He will be a role model for our children, especially in our Smart Green Schools,” he added.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have unveiled a powerful squad for the November 2024 international break, gearing up for crucial matches against Benin Republic and Rwanda. With only one point needed to secure their place in the upcoming AFCON tournament, coach Austine Eguavoen has assembled a lineup of seasoned talents and emerging stars.

Among the notable inclusions is Sadiq Umar from Real Sociedad, marking his return to the national team alongside Gabriel Osho of Auxerre. Osho steps in to cover the absence of West Brom’s Semi Ajayi, who is sidelined due to injury, while Umar fills in for Taiwo Awoniyi, who didn’t make this squad.

In a significant development, Victor Collins of Nasarawa United has earned his first national call-up, creating healthy competition for the left-back position with Bruno Onemaechi.

The Super Eagles are set to capitalize on the three points they have been awarded from the previously abandoned Libya fixture, placing them just a step away from AFCON qualification.

Goalkeepers: Stanley Nwabali (Chippa United, South Africa); Maduka Okoye (Udinese FC, Italy); Amas Obasogie (Fasil Kenema SC, Ethiopia)

Defenders: William Ekong (Al-Kholood FC, Saudi Arabia); Bright Osayi-Samuel (Fenerbahce SK, Turkey); Bruno Onyemaechi (Boavista FC, Portugal); Gabriel Osho (AJ Auxerre, France); Calvin Bassey (Fulham FC, England); Olaoluwa Aina (Nottingham Forest, England); Victor Collins (Nasarawa United)

Midfielders: Wilfred Ndidi (Leicester City, England); Raphael Onyedika (Club Brugge, Belgium); Alhassan Yusuf Abdullahi (New England Revolution, USA); Fisayo Dele-Bashiru (Lazio FC. Italy); Frank Onyeka (Augsburg FC, Germany); Alex Iwobi (Fulham FC, England)

Forwards: Samuel Chukwueze (AC Milan, Italy); Victor Osimhen (Galatasaray FC, Turkey); Ademola Lookman (Atalanta FC, Italy); Kelechi Iheanacho (Sevilla FC, Spain); Victor Boniface (Bayer Leverkusen, Germany); Moses Simon (FC Nantes, France); Sadiq Umar (Real Sociedad, Spain)

Super Eagles goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, recently disclosed his musical inclinations in an interview where he was asked to choose between two Nigerian music heavyweights, Davido and Burna Boy. Okoye revealed that he prefers Davido’s music over Burna Boy’s, citing a personal preference for Davido’s songs.

While acknowledging the greatness of both artists, Okoye admitted that he listens more frequently to Davido. He emphasized that there are songs from Burna Boy that he loves, but overall, Davido’s tracks dominate his playlist. In his own words, “I listen more to Davido than Burna Boy. But there are songs from Burna Boy that I love. There’s just more of Davido’s music on my playlist.”

Okoye’s preference adds to the ongoing discussions among music fans about the distinct styles and appeal of Davido and Burna Boy within the Nigerian and global music scenes.
