Speaking at the 13th edition of the Ake Arts and Books Festival held at Bon Hotel, Ikeja GRA, Lagos, Made explained that stepping back from social media helps him resist the constant pull to seek attention.

The conversation took place during a panel discussion featuring his father, Afrobeat icon Femi Kuti, centred on Remilekun Kuti’s memoir, Mrs Kuti. The session was moderated by award-winning poet Dami Ajayi.

Reflecting on life as a child born into a famous family, Made acknowledged that he shared similar experiences with his father while growing up, but learned early how to navigate them on his own terms.

“But back to what he(Femi) said as well, about growing up as a child in a famous family. So I had similar experiences as he did, but I learnt to sort of manage those experiences at a very young age,” he said.

That self-awareness, he explained, shaped his relationship with visibility and validation.

“So for example at this moment, I don’t have social media on my phone because I prefer to stay away from not so much limelight, but more so the desire to always be the subject of attention. So, I really believe that what I should do as a musician is practice my music as best as I can and deliver music to the best of my abilities. And that is what should define me,” Made stated.

The musician also drew a clear contrast between his upbringing and that of his father. According to him, while Femi Kuti grew up in a household where national struggle and activism came first, his own childhood was rooted firmly in family values.

He credited this difference for the stability he enjoys today and for the principles that guide his personal life, including his outlook on love and commitment a revelation that earned him applause from the audience.

“This kind of thinking, my philosophy in life, the fact that I can say I love one woman and want to stay with her for the rest of my life. That’s not him (Femi). So it’s a totally different life. I grew up in a home where family was priority. My father grew up in a home where the country was priority. So it’s a totally different, polar opposite upbringing. I did grow up in the shrine as well but with a lot of mediation by him.

“Myself and my siblings have had a great upbringing, that I truly have nothing to complain about, from love, teachings about life, my academics, my passion, what I want to pursue, myself, so much so that I am quite a stable person,” Made noted.

In a world where attention often feels like currency, Made Kuti’s reflections offered a quiet reminder that for him, mastery of craft — not constant visibility — is what truly matters.

The countdown to the 2025 edition of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) has officially begun, with this year’s competition tipped to be one of the fiercest in the history of the continental showcase.

On Wednesday, August 27, the International Committee of AFRIMA, in partnership with the African Union Commission, released the nominees’ list, spotlighting African music heavyweights and rising stars across the continent.

Global Afrobeats icons Davido and Burna Boy will face off against Congolese legend Fally Ipupa, Moroccan hitmaker El Grande Toto, South African DJ Maphorisa, and Egyptian superstar Amr Diab. They will also compete with a fresh wave of emerging acts including Shallipopi, Himra, Moliy, Ayra Starr, Tanzanian crooner Juma Jux, and Senegal’s Mia Guissé.

Organizers revealed that AFRIMA 2025 received a record-breaking 10,717 submissions, the highest in its 12-year history. After 10 days of rigorous screening, a 13-member jury trimmed the entries down to 343 nominees spread across 40 categories, representing Africa’s regions and its diaspora.

Speaking on the unveiling, AFRIMA jury member Delani Makhalima hailed the growth of African music: “For years our voices were not heard, but today African music is global. This is AFRIMA, the biggest music entity on the continent.”

The 2025 awards ceremony is scheduled to hold in Lagos from November 25 to 30. The week-long programme will feature signature events such as the AFRIMA Music Village, the Africa Music Business Summit, the Nominees Party, and will climax with the grand finale on November 30.

The prestigious awards night will be broadcast live to audiences in more than 84 countries.

Afrobeat singer Made Kuti has taken to social media to shower praise on his father, music icon Femi Kuti, for achieving what many consider an extraordinary milestone, performing 24 concerts in just one month across Canada and the United States, all at the age of 63.

In a post shared via X on Sunday, August 17, 2025, the Grammy nominee highlighted Femi’s remarkable energy, musicianship, and dedication, while expressing disappointment that such a feat had not received adequate recognition in the media.

“Femi Kuti just finished 24 shows in 1 month on his Canada/US tour at 63 years old as a multi-instrumentalist/composer/singer/songwriter,” Made wrote, before adding: “But we won’t hear anything about that anywhere.”

He later clarified that his frustration was not aimed at fans but at entertainment journalists, who, in his view, often sideline landmark accomplishments in favor of controversy and negativity.

“If something bad/negative happened to him on the tour, he wouldn’t need to pay anyone to mention it,” he added.

For Made, the tour is more than a series of performances — it is a testament to Femi Kuti’s resilience and professional longevity.

He described it as a powerful example of what discipline and consistency can achieve, especially for younger artists looking to build lasting careers.

“Not many musicians over 60 are still touring the world,” he emphasized, framing his father’s success as both newsworthy and inspirational.

In a recent interview, Made shed light on the contrast between Fela’s global reverence and the domestic challenges he faced.

Made Kuti Reflects on Fela’s Lifetime Struggles and Misunderstood Legacy in Nigeria

“During his lifetime, Fela was more appreciated abroad than at home,” Made said, pointing out the lack of recognition from Nigerians at the time.

He also shared how his father, Femi Kuti, bore the brunt of the Kuti name’s controversial reputation. According to him, being a Kuti once carried social stigma rather than pride.

“My dad used to tell us how difficult it was for him growing up—he couldn’t even date because girls saw the Kuti name as a red flag. Back then, Fela wasn’t considered financially successful, and that image tainted the way people saw our family,” he recalled.

"During Fela's lifetime, he was appreciated more internationally than he was locally."

Made also discussed how Fela’s defiant stance against Nigeria’s military regimes led to continuous arrests, police brutality, and a long-running government-driven smear campaign.

“He was painted as a drug addict, a womanizer, and an immoral man. These narratives especially took root among the middle class, and the propaganda machine worked overtime,” he said.

Despite the towering legacy of Fela Kuti today, Made expressed frustration at the misconception that his father, Femi, had an easy ride to fame.

“People think my dad’s success came easily because of Fela. But the truth is, he succeeded in spite of all the baggage that came with being Fela’s son,” he stated.

Now 28 and a Grammy-nominated artist alongside his father, Made Kuti continues to push the boundaries of Afrobeat while honoring and defending the true story behind his family’s name a legacy rooted in resistance, resilience, and a love for African music and truth.

Marking a significant evolution in his artistry, the new project unpacks themes of personal growth, national identity, emotional well-being, and societal responsibility.

More than just an album, it serves as a reflective journey, one that asks hard questions while nudging listeners toward collective self-awareness and accountability.

Each track on Chapter 1 acts as a lens into the mind of a generation grappling with disillusionment, inequality, and the search for meaning.

Rather than simply condemning the system, Made Kuti presents this body of work as a rallying cry urging young Nigerians to reconnect with core values, demand more of themselves and their society, and ultimately redefine progress.

“This album isn’t just a critique,” Kuti explains. “It’s a mirror. A message. A reminder that happiness, both personal and national, starts with awareness, with asking the right questions.”

Set for a special live listening party on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at the legendary Afrikan Shrine, the album’s launch promises to be a landmark moment for Afrobeat enthusiasts and socially conscious music lovers alike.

This release follows his impactful 2022 debut, For(e)word: A Modern Afrobeat Manifesto, which was paired with his father Femi Kuti’s Stop the Hate under the joint project Legacy+ — a bold generational collaboration that earned a Grammy nomination for Best Global Music Album.

With Chapter 1, Made Kuti begins a new era, one that continues the Afrobeat legacy not just through sound, but through purpose, introspection, and the courage to challenge the status quo.

Nigerian singer and Afrobeat musician Made Kuti has revealed that, unlike the generations before him in the legendary Kuti family, he has no interest in pursuing activism, a stance that marks a significant shift from the legacy of vocal resistance associated with his lineage.

In a recent interview with Pulse Nigeria, the grandson of Fela Anikulapo Kuti and son of Femi Kuti expressed a deep sense of disillusionment about the cost of activism in Nigeria, saying his family has “done enough” and paid dearly for standing up to injustice.

“When you look at Nigeria, you see how many years Fela fought. My Dad fought; Uncle Seun is speaking out now. Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti—she was thrown from a storey building. She gave everything, and they killed her for it,” he recounted.

Made spoke candidly about the emotional toll of witnessing decades of activism yield little visible change, questioning the value of sacrificing oneself in a system that seems resistant to transformation.

“Sometimes you just reflect and say, ‘Well, what’s the point of it if all these people couldn’t bring change? What’s the chance that my song or my performance can really bring change?’” he said.

Although he distances himself from active protest, the For(e)ward singer clarified that he still believes in the power of collective action. He stressed that real change only happens when communities act in unity, rather than relying on individuals.

“I believe it’s not in the power of one person. It’s the collective—when the right people do the right thing at the right time, that’s when change can happen. But whether that’ll happen in my lifetime, I don’t know.”

Despite choosing not to walk the same activist path, Made made it clear that he still strives to “play his part,” even if his approach is different from his iconic predecessors.

“I want to be able to look my children in the eyes and say I did my best. But I’m careful about selflessness—giving everything and receiving nothing in return. I believe we’ve already given enough.”

For Made, the decision is rooted in preserving the well-being of his family and loved ones while still living with integrity. His comments reflect a more cautious and introspective view on what it means to fight for a better Nigeria.

“I’m happy to be on the right side of history—but not at the cost of the people I love.”

Femi Kuti, the renowned Nigerian Afrobeat musician and son of the legendary Fela Kuti, has voiced his views on the ongoing “japa” trend, where many Nigerians are emigrating in search of better opportunities abroad.

Speaking at the 2024 Celebration Festival, Kuti emphasized that rather than fleeing to other countries, Nigerian youth should stay and fight to improve their homeland.

Kuti questioned the notion of emigrating to places like Europe and America, highlighting that these regions achieved their current state through struggles, including civil wars, not by running away.

He pointed out that Europe faced numerous civil wars and America underwent a brutal civil war, which has influenced their societies to this day.

In his speech, Kuti urged Nigerians to take responsibility for the state of their country, reminding them that lasting change would come only if people are willing to stay and fight for it.

He also referenced the Fela Shrine, the cultural landmark his family built in Lagos, as a symbol of pride and commitment to Africa, stating that it was not built abroad but in Nigeria.

Kuti further highlighted that even his son, Made Kuti, who holds British citizenship, remains in Nigeria because of their dedication to their home country.

He stressed the importance of ensuring that the legacy they have built continues, underscoring his desire to retire while leaving Nigeria in capable hands.

The documentary sheds light on how this system works, with young individuals being placed under the mentorship of experienced traders, artisans, or professionals to learn a trade or skill.
In an exclusive interview on Nollywood actress and entrepreneur Iyabo Ojo’s Goldroom show on Sunday, December 17, 2023, Afrobeat artist Seun Kuti firmly asserted that the success and recognition he, along with his older brother Femi Kuti and nephew Made Kuti, have achieved are not solely attributed to their lineage as the descendants of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti.

During the interview, the Grammy-nominated saxophonist emphasized the importance of deliberate efforts and dedication in the music industry, debunking the notion that their familial connection to Fela Kuti played a significant role in their accomplishments.

Seun Kuti pointed to the achievements of his older brother, Femi Kuti, aged 60, and his nephew, Made Kuti, in his 20s, highlighting their dedication to the craft as the driving force behind their musical triumphs.

Drawing attention to his family’s musical heritage, Seun mentioned that Fela’s father, Reverend Israel Ransome-Kuti, was also a musician. Despite Reverend Ransome-Kuti’s contributions to music, Seun noted that he never received recognition for his son Fela’s success.

Further exploring his family’s rich musical lineage, Seun highlighted his grandfather as a musician who recorded albums and wrote numerous hymns. Additionally, he pointed out that his great-grandfather holds the distinction of being the first person in Nigeria to record a song.

Dismissing the idea that their success is solely tied to being Fela’s children, Seun Kuti challenged the perception, stating, “It is not because of our dad that we are successful in music. My brother, Femi Kuti, is 60. I am 40. My nephew, Made Kuti, is behind us now too, and he is in his 20s. And he is actually the best of all of us. That’s what it means; it continues to progress because we are really dedicated to it.”

“It’s not just because we are Fela’s children. I mean, nobody says Fela is a musician because his father was a musician. Nobody knows that Fela’s father was a musician. My grandfather was a musician. He recorded albums, and he wrote a lot of hymns. My great-grandfather was the first person in Nigeria to record a song. We came from a lineage of musicians,” he added.

He illustrated a point by mentioning a brother who grew up in Australia, unaware of his Kuti lineage until his 50s. While not a musician, this brother excelled as a creative art director, underscoring the family’s innate creativity.

He said, “We even have a brother that grew up in Australia that didn’t grow up with the family, he didn’t even know that he was a Kuti until his 50s, he’s not a musician but he is a creative art director. It’s what we are. We are creative people. So, when people say we are successful musicians because we are Fela’s children, they are just being half clever.”
