There really is no hyperbole in Bella Shmurda’s music and that is why he’s been able to build such a dedicated fan base built around people of a similar ilk who see their struggles in his struggles and take encouragement from his wins.

From front to back, his debut project ‘High Tension‘ has a distinctively autobiographical feel: whether it’s the growling search for motivation on “Ginger Me” or the hood love tales of “Amope”, there’s a feeling of authenticity that pervades Shmurda’s music and by the time he arrives at “Upgrade”, it is clear that he is on an upward trajectory.

The Bella Shmurda that made ‘High Tension‘ no longer exists, at least not in an artistic sense.

His performance was one of the high points on day 2 of Wizkid’s Made in Lagos concert.

Expressing his excitement for this opportunity, Bella Shmurda took to his Twitter page to thank Ayo Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid, for the opportunity.

The music that we consume is aural repositories of history as much as they are enjoyable tunes that soundtrack our experiences and here is how Bella Shmurda’s transformation into a new voice of the streets.

Whether regaling you with the exploits of a person, the circumstance of a place, or basking in the glow of an event – fictional or otherwise – music continuously offers a first-hand account of the places and people it springs forth from.

In the over 18 months since he dropped that project, his life has changed in more ways than imaginable.

A relative sense of comfort has been achieved, and direct proximity to the street bends that raised him has been greatly reduced by his soaring success.

Starting with a feature on Runtown’s “Body Riddim”, Bella has been summoned to the high table of Nigerian Pop, where women, weed, and hedonism are supreme drivers of what moves the nightclubs and the raucous culture that Afropop thrives on.

Paying Tribute to someone or people who are dead isn’t a strange concept in the Nigerian Music Industry as there are artists who use their songs to express how they feel about the situation.

The 20th of October 2021 marks the one year anniversary of the Lekki Tollgate shooting and many people are in their feelings about the traumatic incident.

To ease the mood, we compiled a list of Nigerian Tribute Songs That still hit hard to date

On April 22, 2010, the Nigerian music world/country as a whole lost a great legend, Olaitan Oladapo Olaonipekun a.k.a. Dagrin. After a gruesome car accident, he passed away.

This traumatic event spawned a song, which went on to become Nigeria’s most popular tribute song.

Artists such as Eldee, Sheyman, Reminisce, Durella, Banky W, Waje, Omawumi, Ruggedman, Lord of Ajasa, Posley, and others collaborated on the song ‘Tribute To Dagrin.’ For months and years to follow, the Hip Hop-based ballad topped charts and hearts.

This song is dedicated to four University of Port Harcourt students who were killed by a mob on October 5, 2012. The horrible occurrence elicited a variety of reactions, but MI’s effort stands out.

You could hear the hurt hidden in the words in between M.I’s inquiries for everyone concerned, the society’s tolerance for such sins, and the dark mood set from the beginning of the song brought to the fore with spoken-word-style narration.

Olorun Mi – Tiwa Savage

Tiwa Savage-Olorun Mi

Many hearts and earphones couldn’t thank Tiwa Savage enough for recording a memorial song for all the great we’ve lost over the years.

With this song, Tiwa gives a whole new meaning to tributes, and the video for the same song is nothing short of heavenly.

To this day, the song is one of the few that both young and old can sing word for word… Let’s just say Tiwa brought her A-game on this single with her voice.

Prior to his death in 2011, MC Loph was known to have a strong friendship with celebrity vocalist, Flavour. It was unsurprising when Flavour dropped a tribute in honour of the Igbo rapper.

The song titled ‘Iwe‘ saw the highly sought after Flavour simply let out his emotions, resulting in millions of hearts flocking to his side.

Burna Boy has garnered fans thanks to his songs which are either love themed or talking about a socio-political problem facing Africa. However, he won hearts after dropping “20.10.20“, a song dedicated to the lives lost at the October 20 Lekki Tollgate shooting.

The Nigerian army had opened fire at innocent citizens protesting against police brutality at the Lekki Tollgate which led to outrage not just in the Country but outside the nation too.

To commemorate that day, Burna on a Micheal Jackson sampled beat pours his heart out and vents his frustrations about the incident.

When Olamide dropped “Voice of the Streets” in 2012, he understood the impact he created and was going to create in the street.

Prior to the 2010s, Rapping in a language other than English used to be considered an abomination, earning you the dreaded ‘wack’ label.

However, Lord of Ajasa and ID Cabasa started laying the foundation of what would become Indigenous rap.

In 2009, Oladapo Olaitan Olaonipekun, popularly known as Da Grin, a young rapper from Ogun State had started making waves on the streets with “Pon Pon Pon”

Before DaGrin, a few rappers had excelled in rapping in their own languages, but he took it to the next level. DaGrin was a rapper who got the common agbero on the street interested in Nigerian rap.

Unfortunately, the cold hands of death snatched away the talented rapper in 2010 sending a shockwave across the music industry.

For the first time in a long time, a musician’s death left a vacuum that many didn’t think would be filled.

Dagrin’s rise to fame and death had opened a door that saw many young ambitious rappers take matters into their hand; one of these men would become Olamide.

Olamide, a young rapper from Bariga, a Lagos State neighbourhood, embodied ambition and skill; his lyricism and punchlines, mixed with powerful rhythms, set him apart from the crowd and rapidly propelled him to national prominence.

Rapsodi, his debut album, was released in 2011, one year after Da Grin’s, proving that indigenous rap was not a passing phenomenon but a genre that was here to stay.

In ten years, Olamide has not only risen to the top of the industry but has transcended from being a King to a Demigod.

Popularizing Indigenous Rap

While Dagrin is credited as the man who made Indigenous rap look cool, Olamide is the man who made it last.

In an industry propelled by fans with short attention spans, there are only a handful of artists that have managed to remain consistent for close to or at least ten years.

For Olamide, being consistent was just one part, aiding a sub-genre remain alive for that long is the main deal.

While other indigenous artists like Phyno, Reminisce, iLLBliss, Naira Marley, Zlatan e.t.c have also found their way to the top of the mainstream on the back of Indigenous rap, Olamide remains King.

Olamide has a strong discography, critical acclaim, financial success, reputation, impact, and awards to his name (as an added advantage).

The only reason he was not named artist of the decade in the 2010s is because of the juggernaut known as Wizkid. Olamide has pushed the boundaries of culture in every manner possible.

Impact on the street

The dictionary defines Impact as ‘a marked effect or influence’ or ‘having a strong effect on someone or something.’

Scientifically, there are different ways to measure the impact of something but in the Music Industry, the impact is measured by many variables which might include, years of reign, commercial success, Influence on a community, amongst others.

Olamide checks all the factors listed above. His rise to the top might have been stained with scandals and controversies but it has never been a hindrance.

he isn’t just the man who gave the streets hit anthems, he is the man whose lyrics were like scriptures to many, indirectly popularizing a lot of slangs.

What about dance styles; Olamide had a number of dance steps going viral because of his songs and music videos.

Thanks to him, we have the ‘Shakiti Bobo’, ‘Akube‘ and its likes going viral.

One reason why Olamide remains love in the music industry is his generous nature and free spirit. he is one artist that has consistently allow upcoming artists to share his platform.

His Label, YBNL remains one of Nigeria’s biggest record companies, consistently producing a host of stars. The likes of Lil Kesh, Adekunle Gold, Chinko Ekun, Lyta, Davolee and Fireboy DML who is currently the star act of the Label.

Aside from the ones he raised the umbrella of his label, Olamide has also been an instrument to the success of some big indigenous stars.

Phyno is one of the many Indigenous stars. The Igbo speaking rapper came into fame after his collaboration with Olamide on “Ghost Mode” become successful.

From there, the two have remained friends, collaborating on more successful singles like “Fada Fada”, “Onyeoma”, “Augment”, “Who You Epp” and even releasing a joint album, “2Kings.”

Apart from Phyno, Olamide has also collaborated with Naira Marley and Zlatan on different occasions.

Alongside him and Lil Kesh, Naira Marley gained fame with his 2017 hit “Issa Goal.” In that same 2017, Olamide was featured on Zlatan’s “My Body.”

He also seems to have laid a blueprint on transforming an upcoming artist into a big star that other big Indigenous rappers are currently copying from.

Albums

Olamide: The Jagaban the street won’t stop celebrating

Aside from his numerous hit songs, Olamide has twelve projects which include, nine solo albums, 2 Joint albums and one EP to his credit.

apart from iLLBliss who has about ten projects to his credit, Olamide is the only Indigenous rapper with a large discography in his arsenal.

He is also one of the few rappers with a perfect trifecta (Raspodi, YBNL, Baddest Guy Ever Liveth) to his credit.

His Evolution

In an interview with CNN African voices, Olamide revealed that the only competition he has is himself. The rapper says he strives to become better than he was the previous day.

This statement is evident in his evolution over the years. If Olamide isn’t starting a trend, he is either leading or revolutionizing it.

His last two albums, “Carpe Diem” and “Uy Scuti” see the 30+-year-old rapper try and push Indigenous rap to the International music scene.

His label YBNL also has a distribution deal with Empire, a notable feat for the rapper which has is one of the many strategies to see his work go beyond the shores of Nigeria.

Mp3bullet.ng illustrates reasons Olamide should not be compared with other rappers.

Carving a niche for himself, Olamide is an established brand and goes with the street tag name, “BADOO“!

Olamide, uniqueness & versatility

The music industry is filled with loads of talents, it’s certainly one of the few hardest industries to crack a hit from!

Nigeria, being the most populated country in Africa also carries one of the largest numbers of aspiring and successful musicians.

As a matter of fact, the competitions vary from the numerous genres sung in the country.

The hip-hop genre which is our focus started gaining momentum over two decades ago, going down the Mode 9, Rugged Man, Eedris Abdulkareem, days, and many more.

Upon arrival into the Nigerian borders, the genre took on the form of its founders in the USA and so, it was usually rap music in English.

However, amongst them was a young rapper by the name, Lord of Ajasa who took it upon himself to establish the indigenous rap game.

Under him erupted the likes of Reminisce, Da Grin (late), 9ice, and also Olamide.

Olamide being the youngest to taste stardom took great advantage of his and became one of the most unique rappers in Nigeria and Africa at large.

Although, he started off as an underground rapper and was involved in rap street battles.

His story however changed when he met Lord Of Ajasa and became a protege under the veteran.

Since then, the rapper has released back-to-back tunes with 12 studio albums to his career.

Many would agree more fans for rap music in the western part of the country tuned in love for Nigerian rap songs because of Olamide.

Another great difference between Olamide and other rappers is the number of awards he has bagged.

With over 40 nominations, Olamide has won well over 20 awards and this includes; City People Entertainment, The Headies, MTV Africa, and many more. Arguably, this one top feat from an indigenous Nigerian rapper.

Also, in his career, he has bagged many ambassadorial deals such as Guinness, Monster, Tekno, and many more.

Like him, not many rappers in Nigeria have as many deals as this. This further proves his worth in the game.

Conclusion

Olamide is a great force whose worth is unmatched. Certainly, he came, he saw, and he conquered!!!

The artist-producer duos have been an essential part of the Nigerian music industry. Many of our favourite Afropop hits were crafted from the prolific relationships formed through frequent collaboration by artists and their producers.

When you listen to a certain artist’s song, you can almost guess the producer of the song, this is what an artist-producer relationship can lead to.

These two held the Music Industry for almost a decade in their palms. The story of how they came to start from the UK where Don Jazzy was a producer working for JJC and D’banj was a security guard with dreams of becoming a superstar.

The story goes that after becoming friends, the two came back to Nigeria to pursue their music careers with D’banj as the frontman and Jazzy as the magic fingers. Their first release was “Tongolo” which was a smash hit.

Over the years, their partnership churned out more hits than any artist in their time could boast of. The two were also founders of one of the biggest labels at that time, Mo’hits records that gave artists like Wande Coal, D’Prince, Dr Sid and the rest a platform to shine.

It also birthed great international acclaim and one of their songs, ‘Scape Goat” caught Kanye West‘s eye who decided to sign them to G.O.O.D Music. But what should have been the beginning of new things in their partnership led to the end of a decade long fruitful collaboration.

ID Cabasa and 9ice

In the early 2000s, 9ice was the poster boy for ID Cabsa’s Coded Tunes record that also housed artists like Seriki, 2Phat, Reminisce, Lord of Ajasa.

9ice and ID Cabasa’s relationship is more of a brotherhood than an artist-producer relationship. 9ice’s first two albums, Certificate and Gongo Aso were produced by ID Cabasa.

“Gongo Aso” was however the album that showed more launched both of them’s career to another phase. The album remains one of Nigeria’s best albums to be released.

Although the two of them rarely collaborate on projects, their relationship still remains great. 9ice named his seventh album after ID Cabasa.

Just like Don Jazzy and D’banj’s story, Olamide and Pheelz became friends while under ID Cabasa. Olamide released his first album, “Rapsodi” under Coded Tunes while Pheelz was an interning producer in the label.

When Olamide left coded tunes to establish YBNL, he took Pheelz with him. Their relationship can be described as Mutualism (A symbiotic relationship in which both species benefit.

The both of them became a major driving force in each other’s career. As Olamide’s popularity rose, so did Pheelz’s own too.

As a matter of speaking, Pheelz has produced almost 80% of Olamide’s songs. Olamide’s third album, “Baddest Guy Ever Liveth” was entirely produced by Pheelz.

For every Evolution process, Olamide achieved, Pheelz was there in charge of the soundboard and sonic directions.

One would argue that OJB Jezreel is Nigeria’s best producer to ever exist and they won’t be wrong. OJB was a versatile producer and an artist at the same time, of which many many music producers apart from Don Jazzy can’t boast of.

His music relationship with 2Baba would always remain relevant given the impact it had on the industry, and they were a perfect fit.

From 2baba‘s classic “Face to Face” album that produced hits like “African Queen“, “Ole“, “Nfana Ibaga” to the ever-flourishing, “Grass to Grace” album, these two had us feeling every emotion possible.

This is one relationship that had a strong impact on contemporary pop even with the arrival of Don Jazzy and D’banj.

Shizzi is Davido’s most credible and dependable producer. The first time the two worked on a project was on “Dami Duro” which was initially produced by Davido himself until Shizzi came on board and made changes.

This move would be the beginning of their fruitful relationship which would see the birth of hit songs like “Overseas”, “Skelewu”, “Gobe”, “Ekuro“, “Tchelete (Good Life)”, Fans Mi”, “The Sound”, “Gbagbe Oshi”, “Like That”, “Blow My Mind”.

Wizkid and Sarz

The reason why these two are on the list isn’t about the number of songs they have worked on but because of the magic they always make whenever collaborate.

While Samklef was the main guy on Wizkid’s first album, “Superstar“, Sarz made his entrance into Wizkid’s second album, “Ayo“, producing just two songs off the album.

The biggest fruit to come out of their partnership was Drake’s “One Dance” song which was initially produced by Sarz and written by Wizkid.

Though it could be argued that Wizkid’s “Sound From The Other side” is one of their best collaboration.

It’s been 11 years since Dagrin passed but not once has the music industry forgotten the music icon that changed the game with his ghetto style songs.

While Lord of Ajasa is credited as one of the first rappers to pioneer rapping in Yoruba, Dagrin is seen as the rapper that made Yoruba rap songs cool and popularized them, paving way for artists like Olamide and Reminisce.

Today we would be looking at the best rap verses from Dagrin on songs in which he was featured on.

This was one of the best tracks that Dagrin ever featured on. “123” is still one of the best rap songs to come out of the Nigerian rap community. Despite being surrounded by other prolific English rappers like M.I Abaga and Naeto C, Dagrin didn’t fail to deliver.

Dagrin might be street but just like most artists, he has reverence for the divine being. Produced by Sheyman, “Turn Me Around” shows Dagrin paying reverence to God for his success. I wish he was featured on more gospel songs before his death.

Dagrin’s verse on this song is one of his best. It’s as good as any verse Dagrin ever dropped. It had everything and in his usual manner, he never strayed from the central theme and topic of the song.

Lowkey, ‘Mercies of the Lord Remix,’ was bigger than the original because of Dagrin.

Ako Mi Ti Poju is the second song Dagrin and Naeto C collaborated on. For some reason, this song is one of Dagrin‘s underrated collaboration. But when it comes down to it, it displays his ability to discuss the vanity with his trademark roots in archetypal Hip-Hop.

At the beginning of Dagrin’s verse, the beat switches to announce his arrival on the song to which he doesn’t disappoint with lyrical wordplays

The part of, “Mo lo sa ATM, mo gba gbem, Mo mu Sagem, so I call all of them…” will always be impressive.

Owo Ati Swagga- Cartiair

Cartiair-Owo Ti Swagger

In 2009, Nigerian rapper, Cartiair dropped what is now clear was a trap song. It was the smash hit single, ‘Owo Ati Swagger,’ with the beat sampled from Lil Wayne’s 2008 “Milli” song, the song glorified all things prim, proper and bougie.

While the song was a successful hit the remix was unsurprisingly not as big. However, Dagrin’s verse on the song is unforgettable. While the song dropped in December 2009, it did not really take off till after Dagrin passed.

He took the beat and dropped a delivery that merged the central theme of braggadocio and vanity with impressive bars. It’s hard to forget his wordplay with the metaphors of the crotch, Gucci, Prada, Barbers and Clippers and how he was not, ‘a rapper, but a lyrical tyrant.’

CDQ’s impact on the sustenance and normalization of street pop in the Nigerian music industry cannot be overlooked.

There is no possible way anyone can talk about the forerunners of the street pop sub-genre or culture pacemaker of the Nigerian indigenous hip-hop rappers without CDQ.

CDQ

Sodiq Abubakar Yusuf popularly known as CDQ launched into the music scene in 2008, prior to being a backup singer for Da Grin before he started rapping.

CDQ

However, CDQ gained proper recognition and prominence after dropping a Masterkraft produced smash anthem titled ‘Indomie’ in 2014 and slightly jumping on the remix with Olamide and Davido.

In addition, the ‘Indomie’ remix featuring Olamide and Davido would safely be added to one of the most viral Nigerian street hop songs archives of all time.

Also, on the verge of making a clearer statement and diverging into a viable household name in the industry, CDQ has scored a series of club bangers with all the top dawgs in the Nigerian music industry.

Analyzing his debut album titled Quality, which was released on 22 August 2016 via Masterkraft’s owned General Records, fortifying the album with six (6) singles which also include Wizkid‘s assisted track ‘Nowo E Soke’ that also turned into an anthem across the nation and Africa at large.

Another scintillating moment in 2017, when he dipped on the track ‘Say Baba’ with the remix enlisting South Africa superstar record producer and singer DJ Maphorisa, therefore, becoming arguably a common knowledge that CDQ defined a viable era in the Nigerian street pop and the Nigerian music industry as a whole.

CDQ contributing a whole lot to the acceptance and inclusions of the sub-genre at the early stage on the global level, and paving way for the younger generation of the sub-genre.

It is normal and inevitable for an artiste to fade or disappear gradually and completely in the scene.

As an artist, shaping appreciated and respected benefaction or legacy is very tough to achieve in the music industry, and relevance and pertinence are even harder for artists to sustain

Why Nigerian music artiste inevitably fade

Newton’s 3rd law of motion states that ‘what goes up must come down’ in a general application, it is therefore considered that everything has a beginning and an end.

In this case, there are some Nigerian artistes who once took the pivot stage but nothing much is heard of them again, artistes like Eedris Abdulkareem, Olu Maintain, Tony Tetuila, Black face, Lord of Ajasa, 2shotz, Mr Raw etc.

in a clear sense, it is normal to fade as a musician, it only takes time, while some are practically caused by physical factors.

Nigeria has had a lot of musicians that are no more on the radar for years, the predominance of streaming in modern music consumption still add a coin to their bag regardless.

According to Joey Akan on Why artistes fade, he stated some reasons why artistes eventually fade, which is;

It’s your time to fade

Artistes under personal things

They become arrogant

They fail to be curious

They fail to learn

In his actual words, he said and I quote;

‘you can’t ride a wave forever, you can ride on lots of waves but you can’t ride on one particular wave, it disappears’

Affirming in his words, it’s very understandable to note that it is unpreventable and unavoidable as an artiste to fade.

In the foreign scene, musical artistes still face the same fate, eventually bound to fade but they perhaps have more career span sometimes, artists like Snoop Dogg, Dr Dre, 50 Cent, Celine Dion, Shakira, and so on.

However, their creative content still lives on but they are technically off the musical conversations.

ID Cabasa started music back in the 80s as a teenager but professionally started in 2003 after leaving the university.

He started his record Label, Coded Tunes in his house that same year but before the record label came to be, he was in a music group called Smiling Head Soldier which was headed by 2phat and comprising of him, 2phat, Lord of Ajasa and MC Spako.

Under Coded Tunes, Cabasa helped contribute to the success of some indigenous rappers that laid the foundation of the sub-genre.

He has been responsible for producing songs for artists like Lord of Ajasa, Olamide, Reminisce, Banky W, Faze, Durella, Ruggedman.

The reserved beat-maker is instrumental in adding musicality to sounds emerging from the Bariga side of Lagos.

Just like Iconic Music personalities like Kenny Ogungbe of Kennis Music, Don Jazzy, Obi Asika of Storm records, ID Cabasa is one of the few Music icons that played a huge role in Nigerian Music scene.

Lord Ajasa

Lord of Ajasa

ID and Lord Ajasa are credited as the people who helped lay the foundation of Indigenous rap in the Nigerian Music scene.

English/Pidgin rappers were the frontliners of rap in The Nigerian Music scene in the 90s until the 2000s when Lord of Ajasa started gaining prominence with Yoruba-fused rap songs.

Born Segun Osaniyi, he was given the stage name ‘Lord of Ajasa’ (Lord of Flavor) in his polytechnic days in Ondo State, where he majored in Quantity Survey.

As a potent lyricist, Lord of Ajasa made hip to rap trendy in Yoruba dialect, inspiring many upcoming acts to follow in his footsteps. Ajasa hit the limelight with the track, “Ma yi lo” in 2000.

Lord of Ajasa then came through with hit singles, Otiya, Esa lo bade, Ara Awe, Otiya and Le fe nuso, featuring Nigerian singer, 9ice

Most of his songs back then were produced by ID Cabasa.

9ice

9ice had met Cabasa through Lord of Ajasa and got signed to Coded Tunes. He also founded his own label, Alapomeji Records but this did not kill his relationship with ID.

ID produced 9ice’s sophomore album, ‘Gongo Aso‘ which is one of Nigeria’s best albums of the decade.

The success of the album did not only shoot 9ice to fame but also Cabasa one of the hottest music producers of that time.

The relation of the two went beyond friendship to brotherhood with 9ice naming his 2016 after the iconic music producer.

Owoloye Olatunde Oluwabukunmi popularly known as Jah Bless stormed the music scene with his absurd/unique style of rapping.

Just like his friend, 9ice, Jahbless was ambitious to make music. He released his first single titled ‘Like This, Like That‘ featuring Lord Of Ajasa. Cabasa was essential to Jahbless’s music career.

He recorded an album that was never released due to parental pressure, the rapper had to take a temporary break from music.

In 2008, Reminisce marked his return with his appearance on his old pal, 9ice’s ‘GONGO ASO’ album.
