Nigerian Grammy Award-winning artist Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, known professionally as Burna Boy, has thrilled over 200,000 attendees of the annual music festival, Glastonbury 2022, as he joined leading music stars across the globe.

Odogwu’s 30-minute performance on Saturday, June 25, 2022, left the audience cheering.

The singer performed his hit song ‘Last Last‘ amongst others with a live band that had fans excited beyond ramifications. His album ‘Love Damini’ which is scheduled for release in July 2022, is something fans can not wait for either.

The African Giant’s performance was applauded by many who couldn’t help but praise his energy on the stage.

On the same stage, American rap act Kendrick Lamar closed the Glastonbury 2022 with a headline set where he repeatedly chanted ‘Godspeed for women’s rights.’

Other international acts that shared the same stage with Burna Boy include Billie Eilish, Lily Allen, Olivia Rodrigo, and Lorde.

Burna Boy on the 26th of January shared the artwork of his ‘Outside‘ album and thanked those who supported the project.

He wrote;

“3 solid years and still doing numbers!! Big Love to everyone that supported this project”

‘Outside’ is Burna’s third studio album. It was released on January 26, 2018, through Spaceship Entertainment, Bad Habit, and Atlantic Records. The album is the follow-up to his debut extended play Redemption (2016).

Described by the singer as a mixtape, Outside consists of mostly Afrobeat, dancehall, reggae, and road rap. It features guest vocals from English musicians J Hus, Lily Allen and Mabel.

One of its popular single, “Ye” saw a 200 percent spike in its streaming numbers after searches for Kanye West‘s album Ye unintentionally caused listeners to stumbled upon it.

The 13-tracks album debuted at number three on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart, spending nine weeks on the chart.

Burna Boy’s Songs: The Love and hatred it has generated

Burna Boy in the month of March was asked how he felt about losing his Grammy Nomination and he said that he felt sick but after Angelique Kidjo spoke to him, he said he became determined to do better and revealed he would be dropping a new album, “Twice as Tall” in July.

Fast Forward to July, no sign of the promised album or any news regarding it from Burna Boy and his team, the only reassurance fans got was the release of a new song, “Wonderful”.

Now, Burna Boy out of the blues dropped the announcement that the album would be dropping on the 14th of August.

Burna Boy announces release date for “Twice as Tall” album

Diddy is the Executive Producer

Burna Boy would be the first Nigerian artist to have an American rap icon and music executive like Diddy become interested in his album.

During the Lockdown, Diddy had organized an Instagram Live show called Dance-a-thon which featured celebrities all around the globe, and Burna Boy was one of them.

It is probably how the two got working together. Diddy speaking to the New York times about the reason he joined the album said,

“I’m on record that I like hit records. If they’re not hit records, I don’t like them,”. He also gave his opinion on how he perceives Burna Boy,

“A lot of times when an artist wants to be coached or pushed to maybe a greater level, that’s where I’ve come in, He, as every artist, he wants his music to be heard by the world. He doesn’t care about crossing over. You know, he’s not trying to get hot. He’s not, like, ‘I want to be a big pop star’ — he’s already a star. He wants his music to be heard, his message, his people.”

His involvement did come with benefits like musical contributions including drums from American Singer/Producer Anderson .Paak and additional production from production legend Timbaland.

Impressive Collaborations

Burna Boy is very specific about how he picks artists to feature on his song. Across the years, has done collaborations with artists like  Wizkid, J Hus, Damian Marley, Angelique Kidjo, Zlatan, Lily Allen, Jeremiah, Serani amongst others.

On this album, Burna Boy took the decision to expand more with unusual but reasonable choices like Sauti Sol, Naughty by Nature, Chris Martins (Coldplay’s frontman), Youssou N’Dour. 

The collaboration choices show that Burna Boy is probably after the Grammys again and this time, he is coming prepared.

Top 10 Favorite songs from Burna Boy

The Songs

Thanks to The New York Times, we are able to get an insight into what to expect from the album. First of all, the album is made of 15 songs and each song carries a purpose with it.

In March before Burna had revealed the Twice as Tall news, he had previewed a song called “Level Up” on his Instagram Live. The song which was soulful had fans begging him to drop it. Though he didn’t, it seems like he would fulfilling their wish as it is expected to be part of the album from a tracklist that recently surfaced.

Most of the album was recorded during the pandemic and Diddy helped put finishing touches to them.

The album contains songs like the Foreboding “Alarm Clock”, the violence-ridden “Wetin dey Sup”, the Chris Martin assisted “Monsters you made” which tells of the repercussion of racism and slavery, the Triumphant “Level Up” where Burna sings of his achievements as a person.

The album according to the New York Times is where Burna Boy takes stock of his accomplishments and his vulnerabilities, and he encourages ambition and perseverance against long odds; he also parties. And he lashes out at racism, exploitation and widespread misconceptions about Africa.

The album also features an eclectic mix: Anderson .Paak’s drumming, a Diddy voice-over, Zulu choir singing, electronic dance music, alt-R&B, and the patterns of West African marimbas and Zimbabwean thumb pianos.

Rockstar

Rockstar was released in 2015 and reproduced by Chopstix. The song was originally produced Leriq which was leaked online by friends a week before the official release.

Dangote

Another Track off his African Giant album, the song makes reference to Nigerian Billionaire, Aliko Dangote who Burna Boy says is still hustling to make money. The singer in the song talks about working harder and smarter and not resting on one’s effort.

Heaven’s Gate

Heaven’s Gate is off Burna Boy’s third album, “Outside” featuring English Singer and Songwriter, Lily Allen. Heaven’s Gate gave us an in-depth into Burna Boy’s reggeaton skills.

Anybody

“Anybody” which is off the “African Giant” is a track with smooth saxophone riff and rhythmic percussion. He sends a message in the song to the naysayers, reminding them that “respect is reciprocal,” and that he has no time for enemies. 

The song was produced by Rexxie.

Odogwu

Odogwu was the first official single from Burna Boy this year. He released the song after dropping a controversial statement calling himself the best African artist after Fela Kuti.

The name of the song, Odogwu means “Big Chief or Big Man” in Igbo.

Ye

“Ye” is from his third studio album, “Outside”. The song could be called Burna Boy’s good luck charm. The song was released in 2018, the same year Kanye West announced that he would be releasing a new album of the same year.

The song sales saw a spike over the name confusion. The song became the street anthem of 2018.

The song was produced by Phantom who said he created the song in two hours.

Wonderful

Wonderful is Burna Boy‘s latest release. The song fuses the Afrobeat and South African kind of tempo. In the song, he praises Nigerian Billionaire, Adebayo Ogunlesi, and says that he hustles like the Billionaire.

2011 – 2017 were pretty much Wizkid and Davido years, all the way. As both of them rose, from Revelation of the Year to Next Rated, up and up until, they literally started winning all the awards. If it wasn’t Starboy, then it was David. The only artist who was up in their rank was Olamide, who himself has emerged on the scene at the same time as Wiz. The three of them were formidable. Really, they still are.

Something magical happened, though. Burna came with the smoke and people started paying attention. At the time, he was known as a dancehall/reggae artist and was often pitched together with Patoranking. But with Wizkid going international Afrobeats needed a new face. And Burna Boy just happened to be right on time.

Before then, he’s dropped two albums under Aristokrat. They were mildly successful, for an artist of his status, but still, nothing compared to the classics Wizkid have wielded. So, “Outside” the next album’s gotta be the thing. The magic. It was!

Within a short time, Burna Boy who was only relatively known as a dancehall star became a household name. As he transitioned into the hottest Afrobeats star, on the planet. His song “Ye” instantly shot him up, beyond imaginations and songs like “Heaven’s Gate” with Lily Allen, we’re there to increase his credibility. The reception afterward was massive.

With that, he conquered 2018 and won all the relevant awards. But as you all know, winning an award is important, but being able to sustain your relevance after winning, is importanter. Burna could either be a one-time star, a one-season wonder. Or he could turn out to be a Legend.

“Killin Dem” with Zlatan Ibile, killed it first. “Dangote” followed, and “Anybody” and “Pull Up.” That’s not all. Not even close. “African Giant”, a 19-track star-studded album hit us like an epiphany. Thing is, any award Burna Boy gets nominated for, in 2019, it doesn’t matter who else is on the list, he’s gotta win. Because he’s done it all.

What’s even amazing is, he didn’t just take over once. No, he did it twice. He could go and win it next year again, and really, that will be history. But now, the story is of a guy who took the baton from Wizkid and ran with it for two years, in a row, dominating the entire African industry. The next generation will write songs about him!

It’s been a rather cool year, in the industry, though. Wasn’t as half as loud as 2017, but it will be notable, especially for many un-expected collabos, the shaku-shaku wave, invasion of Killertunes, the surprise albums and every thing else!

What are the best albums that have been released this year though? Here, we make a list of the best 10 albums released since the year began. From the ones we always anticipated, to the ones that came as a surprise, to the EP’s that spurred out hits. The list ranks the albums, according to how successful they were, both commercially and critically. Here we go;

10. Mr 2Kay – Elevated

Mr. 2kay hasn’t sort of been that whiz everyone wants to be in the industry, but the Flavour (pun intended, of course) he adds to his music, has made him an irresistible part of this big industry.

His album, “Elevated,” is a strong indicator of just how big and legendary his brand will become in a few years. The high-profile collaborations are something to look into. Efya, Lil Kesh, Reekado Banks, Cynthia Morgan, and Harrysong were all on the project. The single “God Can Bless Anybody,” featuring Idahams has been enjoying airplay. And, yeah, the whole album is worth checking out!

9. Loose Kaynon x A-Q – Crown

The joint LP is really something the hip-hop culture needed. Loose Kaynon, a Chocolate City exec and A-Q, one of Nigeria’s foremost underground rappers teamed up with M.I Abaga (who produced the album), for the album.

“Crown” birthed a new conversation about the culture, in the industry circle. And, for the first time in a while, people actually came out to support real hip-hop. Massive airplay, features on various platforms, and social media trends!

8. Skales – Mr Love

Skales does good music. Infact he’s good with albums. You can’t get bored listening to any of his album. And he’s got three, already.

On each of the albums, he’s re-worked the same formulae, juggling between dropping a significant message and making big hits. And that explains why Sarkodie and Phyno, who were on his previous albums were on “Mr Love,” too.

The lead single “Pass” featuring Yung L & Endia, was a mild hit, and “Body” with Sarkodie helped push the album. Phyno and Vanessa Mdee, too.

But the album is ‘generally’ dope!

7. Brymo – Oso

It will go down in history that in 2018, Brymo, dropped an album full of alternative music. No Afro, no pop, no highlife (but the album has life!)

Since he exited the M.I-led Choc City, he’s been focused on pushing the brand with unique music. Music that’s different from what he blew up with. So, after five albums, he announced “Oso,” in November 2017, and dropped the single “Do You Know Me?”

Brymo was then playing shows, all over, and gearing up for the release. The album arrived in March, it was with full hype. Everyone was waiting. No one was disappointed! “Oso” met positive reviews, and it was a critical success.

A controversial video was shot for “Heya,” back in March and recently, a video was dished out for “Banuso.”  And then “Patience & Goodluck,” which got people talking. Brymo got it right!

6. M.I Abaga – Rendezvous

After his single, “You Rappers Should Fix Up Your Life,” went viral, last year, M.I’s been actively back to making music. So, once again, we were expecting an album from the ‘Rap Messiah’. It was “Yxng Dxnzl” he teased, but… he dropped “Rendezvous,” a playlist project that is mostly full of collaborations and songs that weren’t made for any album.

The album had Falz, Cassper Nyovest, AKA, Chillz, Nonso Amadi, Wande coal, Dice Ailes and more. With radio hits like “Lekki” and “Playlist,” M.I was once again atop of the game!

5. DJ Neptune – Greatness

“Greatness” is DJ Neptune’s debut album, and the hype before the release was a hunny. When it came, it was all worth it. Neptune is the only DJ that will put M.I Abaga and Jesse Jagz on the same track, in 2018. “Tear Rubber” with Mayorkun was a big hit, too. There was Burna Boy on “Shayo,” and we had Niniola and Runtown, too. God bless May!

4. Adekunle Gold – About 30

For many, this is the album of the year. Since Adekunle exited Olamide’s YBNL, everyone’s been wondering what will become of him. He’s tried a couple times to make hits, but most of the songs he dropped were nothing compared to “Pick Up,” “Orente,” “Sade” or “No Forget.” So, what?

Adekunle dropped “Ire,” the song that made him our darling again. It was off the “About 30” album. If for nothing else, for that single, we’re grateful for the album!

3. Maleek Berry – First Daze of Winter

Having three hits from a 20-track album is an enviable feat, in today’s over-saturated industry. What can be better than that? Having three hits from a 5-track EP! What Maleek Berry did.

The EP, had “Pon My Mind,” “Been Calling” and “Sisi Maria,” just incase you’re wondering why it was nominated for “Album Of The Year,” at the NEA!

2. M.I Abaga – Yxng Dxnzl

There’s no too much thing to say ’bout the project, because M.I killed it. Wasn’t looking for no hits, wasn’t tryna explore distant genres, nah. He simply took some hip-hop beats and went personal on it.

I don’t think we’ve had anything like “Yxng Dxnzl” ever before. And, even tho’ it was released, just a few weeks ago, it’s one of the good tidings 2018 brought us!

1. Burna Boy – Outside

Burna Boy sings like a rebel, on every note he sounds, he reminds you of the fact that he’s a villain. But, he’s not. In 2018, everybody loves Burna Boy!

“Outside” is an album that critics will have to listen to over and over again, just to discover there’s ain’t anything bad to say ’bout it. From the Afro beat “Ye” to the ragga “Heaven’s Gate” featuring Lily Allen, then “More Life,” “City Vibration,” and “Outside,” everything just sounds perfect. Burna Boy is a legend!
