Nigerian singer and founder of Creele Animation Studios, Nissi Ogulu, popularly known as Nissi, has revealed why she joined her brother Burna Boy’s record label.

The singer, says she at first didn’t want to be a part of Spaceship Records, the record label owned by Burna Boy, her brother.

In a recent interview with Chude Jideonwo, the 29-year-old singer said she at first didn’t want to work with Burna Boy’s record label Spaceship Records but later realized that creating a legacy with her family is “priceless.”

While insisting that there’s no perfect label, Nissi explained that having people who believe in you and are ready to fully support and understand your vision is priceless.

She said: “I think for me at that time, it was a good decision. You have to always weigh the pros and cons and select what you think is best for you,” 

“There’s no label that is perfect but having people who believe in and are ready to fully support you, understand your vision, where you’re going and draw a plan that you can align with is priceless.

“You can rest easy. You trust the people around you and at the same time, you are building a legacy.

“At some point, I didn’t want to be a part of the label, then I thought to myself why not try something different?

“You’re running away from your blood, these are the people you love the most in the world and no one else will have your back as much as your family.

“So how do we make it work in a way that can help us all shine in the way that we deserve but also help us build something together? It has never been a competition and it will never be.”

In 2015, Burna Boy establish Spaceship Records. The Grammy-winning star and Nissi are signed to the label.

The label also houses producers LeriQ and Telz. BNXN was also formerly signed to the label.

In 2020, Nissi dropped her EP titled ‘IGNITE’.

She followed it up with singles like ‘Hold’ in 2021; ‘Gravity’ and ‘Overthinking’ in 2022.

Rexxie

In 2020, Rexxie released his first studio EP – “AfroStreets“, a 7-track project featuring Naira Marley, Zlatan, Barry Jhay, Poco Lee.

Then, in 2021, he debuted his 17-track studio album, A True Champion – where he flexed his chops as he featured the talents of a dynamic group of artists including Oxlade, Teni, Sarkodie, Ms Banks, Kida Kudz, Bella Shmurda, and more.

Sarz

In 2019, Sarz commenced a joint project with WurlD titled, ‘I Love Girls With Trobul‘. The body of work housed eight songs including the popular ‘Sade‘.

Further, in 2021, Sarz returned with a collaborative project with Lojay, which contained the popular ‘Monalisa’ tune. Still, in 2021, he dropped an R&B 4-track collaborative EP with Obongjyar.

Pheelz

The renowned producer started off with the YBNL label, producing almost every hit song Olamide dropped from 2012 to 2015. Inclusive of Olamide’s albums like Baddest Guy Ever Liveth, Rapsodi, etc.

Commencing his journey as a singer, he released his debut EP in 2021, ‘Hear Me Out’ – a 5-track project.

Young Jonn

This is another talented producer who started off from YBNL Record Label. Accoladed with the production of Olamide‘s top songs like ‘Bobo‘, Science Student, Confam Ni, and others, Young Jonn ventured into his music career in 2018 releasing ‘Oshey’.

He continued his career with songs in 2019, 2020,2021 and finally released his debut project, Love Is Not Enough EP in 2022. The project consists of five tracks.

Sess

Sess started off with a 2017 mixtape EP titled, ‘PRBLM Instrumental Mixtape‘. Then in 2018, he released his debut album, ‘Omo Muda’ – an Afropop rendition of 11 tracks!

Lastly, in 2021, Sess returned with another album titled, ‘Spotlight‘ – a classic display of pop sound featuring Teni, Falz etc.

Sess is accredited with some of Falz’s hit songs like Soft Work, Bahd Baddo Baddest, Wehdone Sir amongst others.

Drey Beatz

This is another recording producer who has graced the spotlight with blissful projects. He kicked off in 2020 with Riddim & Luv EP – a 6-track Afrobeat delivery! In 2021, he released his debut studio album, ‘Blessings & Light‘ – a sonorous display of Afrobeat sounds, housing 7 tracks.

Then, in March 2022 he released a classic love-themed 4-track EP, ‘4ever & Always‘.

1da Banton (Nigerian producers)

Just like Pheelz, 1da Banton started off as a producer. He has worked with Tiwa Savage and top music moguls in the industry. Keying his space into the mainstream, he released his first project in 2017 titled, ‘The Banton‘.

Then, he continued his career with a 15-track studio project, ‘Original Vibes Machine’, which was released in 2021.

Kddo (Nigerian producers)

Popularly referred to as Kiddominant, Kddo started off by producing most of Davido’s songs.

Then, in 2021 he unlocked his 8-track studio body of work titled, ‘Too Late Too Lit’. Being his debut EP, he featured the likes of Davido, Mayorkun, The Cavemen, and others.

LeriQ

Last on our list is LeriQ. This popular producer has worked with top dogs like Burna Boy, Wizkid, 2Baba, Timaya, and many others. He released his debut album in 2015 titled, The Lost Sound’, which consisted of 20 premium tracks.

Then, in 2018, he released Luv Wav EP – an R&B infusion of 6 tracks! Progressively, in that same year, LeriQ released a joint EP with Tomi Thomas titled, ‘Illusions‘. Lastly, in 2019, he released another collaborative project with Maddtonic titled, Dutty Love. The project consists of 5 tracks!

The Grammy ceremony is not restricted to artistes alone, as producers also contribute to the makeup of tracks and albums – thus, here is a compiled list of Nigerian producers who have won the Grammy certifications.

The certificates are presented to those ineligible for a Grammy award but who did contribute to a winning recording. These certificates are known as Participation Certificates or Winners Certificates

P2J

The Nigerian-British recording producer started his journey to the Grammys through his collaborations on Beyonce’s The Lion King: The Gift album; producing 6 tracks on the album. The album was nominated for the Best Pop Vocal Album, however, it lost!

P2J furthered his works on Burna Boy’s album Twice as Tall, which earned him his first Grammy award for Best Global Music Album in 2020.

LeriQ

This is another talented producer who has been in the music spotlight for a couple of years.

Signed into Spaceship Records, LeriQ produced three songs off Burna’s Twice As Tall album and secured his first Grammy certification.

Rexxie

Ezeh Chisom popularly known as Rexxie is also on Nigeria’s top production list. Associated with Marlian Records, Rexxie has earned two Grammy certifications so far.

He produced the ‘Comma‘ & ‘Bebo‘ off Burna Boy’s Twice As Tall project and won his first Grammy certification.

Likewise, he produced Do Yourself off Angelique Kidjo’s Mother Nature and secured his second Grammy certification.

Mother Nature won the Best Global Album Category at the 64th Grammys ceremony.

Telz

Kel P

The owner of the popular trademark, Kel P-vibes has finally achieved this feat through his contribution as a co-producer on Angelique Kidjo’s  Mother Nature album.

The beatmaker, Kel P also infused his sounds on Burna’s African Giant album, and Wizkid’s Made In Lagos Deluxe – both were nominated for Grammys.

Vtek

Lastly, there is Vtek who produced Angelique’s Dignity featuring Yemi Alade on Mother Nature album.

As a matter of fact, this talented beatmaker was P-Square’s former recording producer.

Anticipation is similar to expectations, some artists announce the release of their song or project way before the date, thereby causing much anticipation, this can actually overrate a song with low quality.

Impromptu

This particular factor is responsible for a song being underrated and likely given less attention, releasing a song without prior notice or anticipation, some artist wakes up and just drop a song because they are already big and doesn’t need all that buzz while some are just because they feel to.

Visuals

Visuals treatment to a song enhance the song to be recognised properly, a song with a video tends to reach a wider audience than just audio, some songs are underrated because it lacks a video to push it more.

Kizz Daniel – For You feat. Wizkid

This the most underrated Kizz Daniel songs of all time, it was released in 2018 featuring Wizkid, a great song with perfect delivery by both artists but there were no visuals and low promotional turnout.

Phyno – Ride For You feat. Davido

It is an underrated song that received little attention compare to the quality, the combination was impressive, both deliveries were epic, davido even expressed his verse in Igbo language, it was released in 2019 on ‘Deal with It‘ album by Phyno.

Yemi Alade – Do as I do feat. DJ Arafat

A great song that was released in 2016 and produced by Selebobo, a great collaboration with the Ivorian Dj Arafat,  it’s was given less attention.

The song was released on November 24, 2017, and is arguably among Davido‘s top 10 best songs of all time, the song was given less attention because of lack of adequate hype, mainly because 2017 was phenomenal to him, prior to numerous hit releases and hence wasn’t promoted properly.

Wizkid – Lagos Vibes 

The song was released unofficially as a leak in 2018, it was intended perhaps to not be officially released rather dash it out to the fans, but it turns out to be a great song, arguably also among his best songs of all time.

Burna Boy – Say So

Burna Boy was always up to his game when it comes to making a quality song, the chord created by Leriq on the song was amazing both taking the chorus simultaneously, it was released as an album song on L.I.F.E album in 2013 and wasn’t given much attention, perhaps not promoted as a single.

One of 2baba’s most underrated songs, it was delivered with Idoma language but has a powerful message, it is also an album song from ‘Grass 2 Grace‘ it was given less attention and was not promoted.

Burna’s first album, “L.I.F.E” had a lot of gems like “Like To Party”, “Run My Race”, “Yawa Dey,” “Tonight,” e.t.c., however, it also has some slept on tracks like “Remember Me”

On “Remember Me” Burna signs out of the album which is a good way to end this excellent album with a very engaging pace.

Oluwa Burna, as he is affectionately known by fans, references his hometown of PH city, where he was raised.

The Realest

Burna’s Sophmore album, “On a Spaceship” isn’t his best project but the album had its memorable moments like the groovy “The Realest“.

On the Simba Tagz-produced beat, Burna shows us in “Realest” that he is a one-of-a-kind musical genius who stays faithful to his art.

Pree Me

“Pree Me” is a beautiful song off his 2016 “Redemption” EP. This song came at a tumulous time in Burna’s life and the lyrics give an insight into how felt about the issues then.

The bouncy mid-tempo beat produced by Leriq alongside the lyrics is a well-served dish. LeriQ connects with Burna’s inner sombre creative area to create music guided by a specific mood, and this minimalist beat runs throughout the production.

‘Pree Me‘ keeps that riddim going, albeit at a faster speed, and talks about the ups and downs of an artistic career. “I have a lot of enemies, some of whom used to be my friends,” Burna sings.

Deja Vu

Devil In California

Burna published his third album, “Outside,” in 2018, and one of the album’s exquisite gems that don’t get its due flowers is the sensuous “Devil in California.”

In the song, Burna Boy is speaking about a special connection he has with a woman, and how he doesn’t fully comprehend the relationship. On a soothing groove, he says, “I don’t even know where I’m bringing ya.”

“Devil in California,” is a slick track that pushes into late-night overindulgence as Burna delivers dizzy phrases about intoxication and a lingering devil on his shoulder.

Calm Down

“Calm Down” is another underrated gem from Burna’s “Outside” album. Burna Boy addresses concerns from people who advise him to cool down on his social habits that he isn’t taking his feet off the throttle in this groovy track.

The song starts with a harmonized “do, do dodododooooo” and Burna Boy sings over it, sharing his personal experience of sorrow and numbing his anguish by drinking from a Styrofoam cup.

Ph City Vibration

If there’s one thing Burna Boy is known for in his music, it’s dropping piece-by-piece insights about himself and his upbringing. On “Ph City Vibrations,” he goes into more detail.

On “Ph City Vibration,” he is most assured. It serves as both a mini-biography (“I was born inna the teaching hospital/The 2nd of July of 1991”) and a love letter to his hometown of Port Harcourt, Nigeria’s River States, with references to roasted plantains and fish, as well as the city’s soccer stadium, Yakubu Gowon Stadium (which he still refers to as Liberation Stadium).

Rockstar (The Leriq version)

Before Burna Boy released the official version in 2015 which was produced by Chopstix, there was the OG produced by Leriq which was leaked.

While the Official version is beautiful, I feel the Leriq-version is amazing and hold its forte even against the Official version.

Rock Your Body

Rock Your Body is a testament to Burna Boy’s flow, melody, songwriting (if you can understand his vernacular), voice, and rhythm mastery all in one. Julz deserves credit for a fantastic soundtrack. Outside has “more life” thanks to the song, which was released in the summer of 2017.

Burna Boy confesses his carnal desire to make love to his partner in the dancehall-highlife single. The song’s melodies are a mid-tempo mix of highlife, dancehall, and Afro-fusion.

Taking to his Instagram page on the 10th of June, Burna Boy posted pictures and a video of him holding his Grammy Award revealing the award was recently delivered.

Recall that the Odogwu crooner became the first Nigerian Afrobeat artist to win the Best Global Music Album at the 63rd Grammys which was held in the month of March 2021.

He won the award thanks to his 2020 “Twice as tall” album which featured an impressive list of both American and African artists.

Celebrating the Award again, Burna explained what the award meant to his family and the various accomplishments of his siblings.

The artist-producer duos have been an essential part of the Nigerian music industry. Many of our favourite Afropop hits were crafted from the prolific relationships formed through frequent collaboration by artists and their producers.

When you listen to a certain artist’s song, you can almost guess the producer of the song, this is what an artist-producer relationship can lead to.

Don Jazzy and D’banj

These two held the Music Industry for almost a decade in their palms. The story of how they came to start from the UK where Don Jazzy was a producer working for JJC and D’banj was a security guard with dreams of becoming a superstar.

The story goes that after becoming friends, the two came back to Nigeria to pursue their music careers with D’banj as the frontman and Jazzy as the magic fingers. Their first release was “Tongolo” which was a smash hit.

Over the years, their partnership churned out more hits than any artist in their time could boast of. The two were also founders of one of the biggest labels at that time, Mo’hits records that gave artists like Wande Coal, D’Prince, Dr Sid and the rest a platform to shine.

It also birthed great international acclaim and one of their songs, ‘Scape Goat” caught Kanye West‘s eye who decided to sign them to G.O.O.D Music. But what should have been the beginning of new things in their partnership led to the end of a decade long fruitful collaboration.

ID Cabasa and 9ice

In the early 2000s, 9ice was the poster boy for ID Cabsa’s Coded Tunes record that also housed artists like Seriki, 2Phat, Reminisce, Lord of Ajasa.

9ice and ID Cabasa’s relationship is more of a brotherhood than an artist-producer relationship. 9ice’s first two albums, Certificate and Gongo Aso were produced by ID Cabasa.

“Gongo Aso” was however the album that showed more launched both of them’s career to another phase. The album remains one of Nigeria’s best albums to be released.

Although the two of them rarely collaborate on projects, their relationship still remains great. 9ice named his seventh album after ID Cabasa.

Olamide and Pheelz

Just like Don Jazzy and D’banj’s story, Olamide and Pheelz became friends while under ID Cabasa. Olamide released his first album, “Rapsodi” under Coded Tunes while Pheelz was an interning producer in the label.

When Olamide left coded tunes to establish YBNL, he took Pheelz with him. Their relationship can be described as Mutualism (A symbiotic relationship in which both species benefit.

The both of them became a major driving force in each other’s career. As Olamide’s popularity rose, so did Pheelz’s own too.

As a matter of speaking, Pheelz has produced almost 80% of Olamide’s songs. Olamide’s third album, “Baddest Guy Ever Liveth” was entirely produced by Pheelz.

For every Evolution process, Olamide achieved, Pheelz was there in charge of the soundboard and sonic directions.

2Baba and OJB Jezreel

One would argue that OJB Jezreel is Nigeria’s best producer to ever exist and they won’t be wrong. OJB was a versatile producer and an artist at the same time, of which many many music producers apart from Don Jazzy can’t boast of.

His music relationship with 2Baba would always remain relevant given the impact it had on the industry, and they were a perfect fit.

From 2baba‘s classic “Face to Face” album that produced hits like “African Queen“, “Ole“, “Nfana Ibaga” to the ever-flourishing, “Grass to Grace” album, these two had us feeling every emotion possible.

This is one relationship that had a strong impact on contemporary pop even with the arrival of Don Jazzy and D’banj.

Dagrin and Sossick

Dagrin and Sossick were like Batman and Robin. These two would have made more impact on the Hip-Hop scene if not for the death of Dagrin.

Sossick started working with Dagrin in 2006 but it wasn’t until 2009 that their partnership produced fruit with the release of “Pon Pon”

Although Sossick didn’t entirely produce Dagrin‘s popular album, “CEO,” one can’t deny the impact he had on it.

Burna Boy and Leriq

Burna Boy and Leriq have been partners back from their days in Aristokrat label. In fact Leriq produced the whole of Burna’s debut album, “L.I.F.E” which produced hits like “Like To Party“, “Run my Race“, “Yawa Dey.”

Although Leriq hasn’t produced a full album for Burna after “L.I.F.E”, he produced Burna’s “Redemption” EP.

He is also responsible for the production of some of Burna’s hit songs like “Rockstar”, “Monsters You Made“, “Way Too Big“, “No Fit Vex“.

Davido and Shizzi

Shizzi is Davido’s most credible and dependable producer. The first time the two worked on a project was on “Dami Duro” which was initially produced by Davido himself until Shizzi came on board and made changes.

This move would be the beginning of their fruitful relationship which would see the birth of hit songs like “Overseas”, “Skelewu”, “Gobe”, “Ekuro“, “Tchelete (Good Life)”, Fans Mi”, “The Sound”, “Gbagbe Oshi”, “Like That”, “Blow My Mind”.

Wizkid and Sarz

The reason why these two are on the list isn’t about the number of songs they have worked on but because of the magic they always make whenever collaborate.

While Samklef was the main guy on Wizkid’s first album, “Superstar“, Sarz made his entrance into Wizkid’s second album, “Ayo“, producing just two songs off the album.

The biggest fruit to come out of their partnership was Drake’s “One Dance” song which was initially produced by Sarz and written by Wizkid.

Though it could be argued that Wizkid’s “Sound From The Other side” is one of their best collaboration.

Masterkraft and Flavour

Flavour popularized Afro Highlife with his songs and Masterkraft was one of the major driving force behind this.

These two have together crafted quality album that has gone to become cult classics. Despite the fact the Nigerian industry has unofficially seen Lagos as its capital, these have managed to break into the mainstream scene.

Falz and Sess

Falz and Sess relationship started with Falz’s second album, “Stories that Touch” and continued unto “27” and “Moral Instructions” which is the highest point of their relationship so far.

The two have undeniable chemistry when it comes to songs. Their synergy is easy to spot with the ease at which Sess matches Falz tempo by tempo.

Reminisce and Sarz

Reminisce and Sarz have come a long way. Although Sarz is yet to produce an album for Reminisce, the longevity of their working relationship is a cause for envy.  The first song they collaborated on was on Jahbless‘ Joor Oh. “Kako Bi Chicken” was their second partnership.

In their 10 years of working relationship, the two have churned out hits like “Asalamalekun“, “Oja“, “Instagram“, “Ogaranya”

Naira Marley and Rexxie

While their relationship is still one of the youngest on this list, their less than five-year relationship has managed to establish both of them in the limelight.

Although Rexxie was a result of Chinko Ekun‘s “Able God” and Naira Marley‘s popularity was as a result of “Issa Goal“, their partnership in songs helped established them in the street-hop scene.

This partnership has birthed songs like ‘Am I a Yahoo Boy?’, “Soapy“, “Tesumole“, “Pxta“, “As E Dey Go’, “Idi Oremi“, “Chi Chi“, e.t.c
