Nigerian star singer, songwriter, and performer Adedamola Adefolahan, known as Fireboy DML, has shared the inspiration behind mirroring Wande Coal on a track from his latest album, “Adedamola.”

In an interview with Apple Music, Fireboy discussed his studio session with the legendary Lagbaja.

The YBNL/Empire artist recently released his 14-track fourth studio album, featuring iconic Nigerian Afrobeat and Traditional Folk musician Lagbaja, Grammy-winning American soul singer Jon Batiste, Afrobeat veteran Seun Kuti, Afrobeats star Lojay, and award-winning Nigerian DJ Spinall.

The album also includes a track that pays tribute to Nigerian Afropop star Wande Coal.

Speaking with South African media personality Nandi Madida on Apple Music Africa Now, Fireboy explained why he dedicated the song titled “Wande’s Bop” to Wande Coal.

The track, co-produced by DJ Spinall and Semzi, is one of the standout hits on the album, perfectly capturing the essence of Wande Coal, whom Fireboy, along with other new-age Afropop and Afrobeats artists like Wizkid, Oxlade, and Joeboy, often refer to as “the source.”

Fireboy noted that the song and the album as a whole are a tribute to the legends who have shaped African music over the years, which is why he collaborated with high-profile names like Lagbaja, Seun Kuti, and Wande Coal on this project.

He said:

“I recorded that in 2021 I think, in SPINALL’s studio in Lagos. I was like, “When the time is right, this record will come out”—it just made a lot of sense. I listened to the beat once and it just immediately took me back to 2015-2016, when I was listening to one of Wande Coal’s records. It just sounded like something Wande Coal would love, something he would have loved to have spit on. I was like, “What would Wande of 2016 do? Let me just try that.” It’s sort of like a tribute to him; [everyone] knows I respect him so much.

This whole album is more like a tribute to all the legends that shaped African music over the years, and also a testament to myself, of course, and my growth over the years.”

Fireboy discussed his collaboration with Lagbaja, revealing that he never saw Lagbaja’s face during the recording of their track “Back & Forth” due to Lagbaja’s famous mask. Fireboy expressed his admiration for Lagbaja and his intention to bring a sense of nostalgia to the album by working with legends.

“That’s a special record right there,” Fireboy said. “It means a lot to me getting a legend like Lagbaja on that record at this time. One major theme around the album is nostalgia, and it was important for me to involve legends in the game to help convey this message. Fireboy also recounted an amusing detail about Lagbaja’s masked presence: “I did not get to see his face. I had some interesting thoughts about asking if I could see it! But what matters is that we made the music. Lagbaja’s anonymity is part of what makes him special.”

On working with Seun Kuti, Fireboy credited Olamide, the album’s A&R and YBNL label boss, for suggesting Kuti for the track. He described Seun Kuti as an “amazing and funny person” and enjoyed the collaboration.

“Big shout out to Olamide,” Fireboy said. “When we were in the studio, he suggested, ‘I hear Seun Kuti on this,’ and it immediately clicked. I pictured Seun Kuti in a dark room with a spotlight and his sax blowing away—it just made perfect sense. He’s a very cool guy, very funny, and down-to-earth. Working with him was a lot of fun.”

The album also includes a track named after the seminal Afropop star Wande Coal. Fireboy explained that the song and the album are tributes to legends who have shaped African music.

“I recorded that track in 2021 in SPINALL’s studio in Lagos,” Fireboy said. “It made a lot of sense to release it now. The beat took me back to 2015-2016, a time when I was listening to Wande Coal. It sounded like something he would love. It’s a tribute to him, reflecting the deep respect I have for him.”

Overall, Fireboy views “Adedamola” as a tribute to the legends of African music and a testament to his own growth as an artist.

The song “Aimasiko” from Simi’s “Simisola” album is among the album’s most sentimental tracks. It is a straightforward excerpt from the timeless masterpiece “Aimasiko” by Chief Ebenezer Obey. The record, along with a few others, was released in 1987.

Obey, on the other hand, is well known for his use of Christian spiritual themes in his songs and has since retired into a ministry of Nigerian gospel music in the early 1990s.

Jaiye Jaiye- Wizkid feat. Femi Kuti

Sample: “Lady” by Fela Kuti (1972)

WizKid looked determined to pay full respect to Fela with his 2013 track, in which he sampled an apparently random Fela track.

Without caring whether or not it fits with his song, Starboy incorporated Fela Kuti’s “Lady” into his 2013 hit track “Jaiye Jaiye.”

Mercy- Adekunle Gold

Sampel- Dem Go Pose by Baba Fryo (Mid 1990s)

Adekunle Gold kicked started his 2022 with the melodious song, “Mercy” off his album, “Catch Me If You can”. “Mercy” is a pop record that samples Baba Fryo’s Denge Pose lyrics.

On it, Adekunle Gold prays for God’s mercy in order to identify fake friends with fake love and overcome his enemies.

Opotoyi(Marlians) – Naira Marley

Sample: “Papa Worldwide” by Obesere

Naira Marley’s “Opotoyi” was released during the time the singer was having arguably the biggest challenge of his career.

At this time, he was fighting a battle to avoid going to jail after being arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in relation to internet fraud. This challenge, however, did not deter him from going about his primary duties as he dropped “Opotoyi” on June 7, 2019.

The song which was a hit despite its vulgar lyrics has an interpolation of Obesere’s hit track, “Papa Worldwide”

PBUY- Asake

Sample: “Shakomo” by The Remedies (1998)

Asake is currently one of the Nigerian music Industry’s favoured sons as he keeps rising out hits after hits. One fo his hits, “Peace Be Unto You(PBUY)” is an uptempo Afro-Amapiano tune produced by Asake’s favourite producer, Magicstick.

The song samples “Shakomo” by the defunct Hip-Hop music group, The Remedies which was one of the biggest songs in Nigeria in the ’90s.

My Love- DJ Tunez ft Adekunle Gold

Sample: Can’t Just Stop Thinking about You by KWAM 1

In this collaboration with DJ Tunez, Adekunle Gold sings about happiness and love in a song titled ‘My Love” that samples KWAM 1’s Can’t Just Stop Thinking about You.

Anifowose- Olamide

Sample: “Orin Abode Mecca Medley” KWAM 1

Off Olamide’s Baddest Guy Ever Liveth Album, “Anifowose” is a sombre melodious track that draws listeners in whether or not you understand Yoruba.

The song was sampled off KWAM 1′s 1989 hit record, “Orin Abode Mecca Medley”.

Baby Answer- Runtown

Sample: “Eddie Quansa” by The Peacock highlife band

In 2014 at the peak of his career, Runtown dropped the song, ‘Baby Answer‘. Runtown samples Peacock highlife band’s The Masquerade soundtrack and brought in more flavour, modernizing it to fit with the recent times.

Temper remix – Skales ft Burna Boy

Sample: “Sorrow, Tears and Blood” by Fela Kuti

One of the hits of 2017 is Skales’s Temper remix featuring Burna Boy. The song which is on his “Never Say Never Guy” samples Fela Kuti’s “Sorrow, Tears and Blood” song.

Bank Alert- P-Square

Sample: Iyogogo by Onyeka Onwenu

“Bank Alert” is a 2016 song by Nigerian pop duo P-Square. It was recorded in Igbo and Pidgin English and samples lyrics from “Iyogogo” by Onyeka Onwenu.

Nigerian singers, DJ Cuppy and Rema have shared their favourite classic Nigerian songs respectively.

The two were guests on the #WhoWeBe Podcast where they asked about their favourite Nigerian oldies.

When the host stated that hers was Olufunmi by the music group, Styl-Plus, Cuppy jumped in stating it was also her favourite.

She and the host sang part of the song in excitement while Rema looked on.

Rema on the hand stated that his favourite oldie was Joroni by the late Sir Victor Uwaifo who is also from Benin like him.

He stated that the song made his childhood while Cuppy advised him to sample the song one day. Cuppy also revealed another favourite of hers was “Konko Below” by Lagbaja.

The host in response revealed she used to be scared of him because of his mask.

Lagbaja- Native mask and ankara

Lagbaja was one unusual fellow who had people trying to figure out his persona.

He kept music lovers on their toes and eager to see the mastermind behind the mask thanks to his fascinating music and different interesting masquerade looks.

Lagbaja serenaded us with tunes like Koko below, Never far away, Gra gra, Suuru Lere, and Nothing for you while wearing an Ankara frilled-ski mask, native two-piece, and his saxophone. Years later, his unusual characteristic appearance still makes him stand out.

Naeto C- Traditional hat

Naeto C made an immediate impact with Kini Big Deal, standing out for a variety of reasons.

As he frequently reminded us, he was the only MC with an MSC, delivering many hits like 10 over 10 and iconic phrases like “Yes Boss” that are still engrained in our mainstream culture.

Aside from his great music, he was a fashion trailblazer with his undeniably stylish appearance. We saw him in a trilby (a narrow-brimmed hat), fila (a traditional Yoruba cap), but it was his re-invention of the hula (a traditional Hausa cap) that became one of his defining looks.

Before Naeto C made the cap his signature look, hulas only went with traditional garb for men but the rapper rebranded the hat and gave it a contemporary feel that went with everything from tees and jeans to gowns.

Naeto C’s style included sunglasses, tuxedos or business suits, and recognizable T-shirts imprinted with slang from his songs. Everyone attempting to be as cool as him immediately absorbed his general laid-back swag.

Don Jazzy- Walking Stick

Don Jazzy, who produced the majority of Mohits and Mavin’s early songs, made boss-like cameo appearances in their videos with his ornate walking stick.

The walking stick, which he didn’t simply use for video shoots, gradually became his hallmark look, following him almost everywhere. The walking stick was a perfect match with his persona as “Don.”

Over the years, Don jazzy ditched his walking sticks to rebrand and he is now focused on managing young Mavin signees.

Falz- Empty Glasses Frames

Falz first wore standard spectacles before switching to lensless glasses, which sparked a fashion trend in which many young Nigerians wore glasses with no lenses. Even as his sonically evolved, he has remained consistent with the lensless glasses.

Wurld- Blue Hair

Wurld has had blue hair since his debut and has kept it that way without sacrificing versatility. He states that his blue hair has been his natural color since he was reborn. It’s unclear whether he’ll ever go back to the color of his hair before he was reborn, or if he’ll change it from blue to a different color.

Rema- Ski Mask and Teddy Bear

In 2019, he entered the game as a thief in the night, donning a knitted ski mask and brandishing a teddy bear he referred to as his “best friend” in a Twitter outburst.

Rema’s hits under this guise include Ginger Me, Bad Commando, and Dumebi. In 2020, he shaved his dreadlocks as a tribute to the EndSARS movement, and they appear to be growing back.

DJ Cuppy- Pink hair/pink everything

Cuppy’s trademark pink hair is something you’ll almost certainly never see her without. From her hair to her interior decor to her Porsche, Cuppy has embraced a world of pink. There’s clearly more to her wig than meets the eye.

Yemi Alade- PAN African look

When it comes to style, we already know Yemi Alade is all African. From her haircut to her Ankara, she creates intriguing ensembles, and her African essence extends to her music—stunning it’s to watch. She has no plans to stop advocating for Africa anytime soon.

Ruger – Eye patch

When he first appeared on the scene in 2021, his eye patch drew a lot of attention and inquiries.

Ruger said he wears the eyepatch out of respect for someone in an interview. His pink hair is another distinguishing feature that adds to his Ruger-flair.

We are not sure if his hair colour will change very soon, but his eye patch appears to be permanent.

Pepsi Nigeria, a leading soft drink company in Nigeria, has announced that iconic Afrobeat performer Lagbaja and popular singer and rapper Rema will perform at the 8th Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA) in a first-of-its-kind collaborative performance.

Pepsi said in a statement released in Lagos on Friday that the star artists will perform live at the awards presentation on May 14, 2022.

The performance will bring a fresh and unique dynamic to the AMVCAs,” Ogunleye said.

Lagbaja, a singer, songwriter, saxophone wizard, and performer is famous for being masked on the stage.

He was at the peak of his powers in the 90s through the early 2000s when he sold-out concerts around the country.

Even now, he continues to deliver vintage quality performances across the world.

Rema, unveiled as a Pepsi brand ambassador last September, is a singer and rapper who rose to stardom with the release of “Iron Man”, which even appeared on Barack Obama’s 2019 summer playlist.

Rema is known for his unique brand of music known as Afrorave, a subgenre of Afrobeat with Arabian and Indian musical influences.

He is one of the country’s most-followed artists, with his fans self-identifying as Ravers.
