Seun Kuti, a well-known artist and the youngest child of Fela Anikulapo Kuti, the father of Afrobeat, has criticized comedian Ayo Makun, often known as AY, for not turning down his national award.

Recalls, Through the Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs on Sunday, former president Muhammadu Buhari announced the names of 337 Nigerians who will receive national honours on June 1st, 2023, including the comedian AY, singer Davido, actor Kunle Afolayan, Super Eagles and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, and other celebrities.

AY responded to those who questioned him for not refusing the honorary award from the Federal Government in a tweet on Monday in response to the announcement. claiming that the highest honour somebody could receive is a national award.

Explaining why he will not reject the award, AY said, “Those of you shaming or asking me to reject ‘A National Honour’ are clearly missing a vital point. Our country is bigger and more important than any president or political party awarding it. National honour is the highest recognition anyone can get for his or her contributions to nation-building.

”So my allegiance is to a country where I have contributed my own quota, and I am more than happy to be rewarded by the same nation.”

Seun Kuti called AY’s explanation superfluous in a post on his Instagram profile and story in response to the comedian. He teasingly told the comic to accept his “Buhari” award and end his justifications.

“Let me reiterate. No be public opinion poll them take dey choose national award na by presidential committee then the president will accept the nomination of certain people. In as much as it’s a national honour, it’s a presidential appointment. Biko, receive your BUHARI award and stop to dey Shalaye.

“This is what I hate about sellouts. Is it that you don’t have a chest, or you can’t do anything with the chest? Resist the URGE to SHALAYE (explain), Don’t try and dress HYPOCRISY as NATIONAL LOYALTY OR PATRIOTISM. With una 2 Homes and 2 Passports,” Seun Kuti said.

Seun Kuti, a well-known artist, has expressed his deep displeasure with opponents of the Buhari government who gladly accepted national awards conferred upon them by the departing president’s administration.

The Afrobeat musician is disparaging the recipients of the national honours.

As he nears the end of his term, President Muhammadu Buhari recently presented national honours to 339 deserving Nigerians.

Popular artist Davido and three eminent Nigerian filmmakers, Kunle Afolayan, Charles Opaleke, and Ayodeji Richard Makun, often known as A.Y., were among the honorees.

Kuti has harshly criticized these people for receiving the accolades, questioning their consistency and mocking them for what he sees as their double standards on his Instagram page.

He is adamant that Buhari’s government is one of the worst the country has ever seen and should not be supported.

Kuti questioned the sincerity of people who continuously criticize the government while accepting praises from the same administration.

He asked why no one would refuse the awards on principle, or if they actually felt Buhari had changed as a leader.

Nigerian Afrobeat superstar David Adedeji Adeleke, who is professionally known as Davido, has reacted by expressing joy as he gets listed for national honours.

The celebrities from the entertainment sector that are nominated for the national award honours include Davido, Victor Osimhen, and Kunle Afolayan.

The Ministry of special duties and Intergovernmental Affairs announced the award in various cadres.

Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) was given to Davido.

The performer has amassed enormous influence in the Nigerian music scene, helping to establish Nigeria’s distinctive musical style on a worldwide scale.

The OON was also given to Afolayan, a talented filmmaker whose works are recognized for having pioneered the road for the new Nollywood.

The US streaming service Netflix and Afolayan agreed to a three-picture contract in March 2021, establishing a good example for other participants in Nigeria’s rapidly expanding film industry.

Charles Okpaleke, a filmmaker who received an OON, is another somebody from the entertainment business who has received an award.

Victor Osimhen, the Nigerian footballer whose goal earned Napoli its first Serie A title in 33 years, was awarded an MFR (Member of The Order of Federal Republic).

Terry Waya, a businessman and the father of reality TV star Kiddwaya, was also inducted into the OFR (Order of the Federal Republic) cadre.

All award winners were asked to provide the ministry with a soft copy of their commendation or CV by May 31.

They are also expected to be physically present on June 1, 2023, for the presentation of their medals and diplomas.

Taking to his official social media page, Davido tweeted; “David Adeleke OON 🇳🇬.”

In Kunle Afolayan’s new Netflix film Swallow, Niyola will star opposite Ijeoma Grace Agu, Chioma Akpotha, Eniola Badmus, Mercy Aigbe, and others.

On Wednesday, September 1st, 2021, the teaser was posted to Netflix Naija’s official Instagram page.

Netflix released the first teaser along with a brief explanation for the audience on their Instagram page, announcing the new film. They penned;

Niyola makes her feature film acting debut in Kunle Afolayan’s upcoming Netflix film Swallow as Tolani Ajao, the lead character. Tolani is a bright-eyed young woman trying to make it in Lagos, which is riddled with stumbling blocks.

Swallow is a film adaptation of Sefi Atta’s best-selling novel.
