Konga has chastised Don Jazzy, the CEO of Mavin Records and a prominent music producer, for refusing to recognize his contribution to being able to get Wande Coal on his label.

In response to a recent interview Don Jazzy did, Konga stated that he introduced Wande Coal to the Mavin Boss but has yet to be rewarded by the music entrepreneur

Narrating how he introduced the ‘Oloufe” crooner to Don Jazzy and D’banj, Konga wrote:

”I did what I did to help WC being a young talented student of UNILAG to achieve his dreams which I knew will definitely uplift Mohit records to attain another level in the entertainment industry as at then and having him on Mohit actually boosted their brand in all ramifications.

So after 17 years of no compensation, nor gratitude from your record label, this is what I get in return from @Donjazzy.

Note this has been happening in the entertainment industry for a long time.Where a fellow artist will not want to give his/her colleague credit. Reminisce is undoubtedly one of the forerunners and conveners of street hop in the Nigerian music industry.

In the late 2000s, the Nigerian hip-hop scene was booming with names like Naeto C, M.I, Mode 9, TerrythaRapman, RuggedMan, and quite talented others who carved heavily on global hip-hop pleasantries and infusion of their own local derivatives.

However, all of them created a blueprint or template for what rap music sounded like in the country and what could be generally and consciously accepted or played to the mainstream.

The diversification also saw a new ‘street sound’ which also trapped heavily on hip-hop serenity was growing in the ghetto and would soon hit the mainstream with full force.

It all birthed in early 2010 with the launch of one of Nigeria’s most talked about and praised rap figures DaGrin; with his total confidence of flows, and melodic delivery in Yoruba, and Pidgin English fused with Western slangs, he opened the doors to a new playing field.

The ‘Local Rapper’ reception was critically acclaim while grasping to his roots, DaGrin album C.E.O transmitted something new.

His tragic passing in 2010 left the reins of the paradigm shift he steered open for worthy successors.

A new era was unlocked and in 2011 came artists like Olamide, Jahbless, Konga, and Reminisce.

These new voices took the sound to the next level and made hit singles that made it acceptable.

What was now termed ‘Street Music’ was an evolution of hip-hop, mashed with fast-paced afrobeat drums and layered with heavy-hitting lyrics.

Also, it was slowly taking over nationwide, in front of everyone’s eyes.

Nine years later one of the sound’s leading voices, Reminisce, is still at the top of his game. With the emergence of younger figures like Zlatan, Lil Kesh, Mojo, who’ve all contributed to the new age identity of what ‘Street Music’ has become.

Reminisce has held his own with four top-selling and award-winning albums, countless successful hit singles, and also an acting credit on one of Nigeria’s highest-grossing films, King Of Boys, he’s undoubtedly become what one would call an OG.

123 (Remix)- DJ Neptune

This was one of the best tracks that Dagrin ever featured on. “123” is still one of the best rap songs to come out of the Nigerian rap community. Despite being surrounded by other prolific English rappers like M.I Abaga and Naeto C, Dagrin didn’t fail to deliver.

Turn Me Around- Kenny St Brown (KSB)

Dagrin might be street but just like most artists, he has reverence for the divine being. Produced by Sheyman, “Turn Me Around” shows Dagrin paying reverence to God for his success. I wish he was featured on more gospel songs before his death.

Mercies Of The Lord Remix-Oritse Femi

Dagrin’s verse on this song is one of his best. It’s as good as any verse Dagrin ever dropped. It had everything and in his usual manner, he never strayed from the central theme and topic of the song.

Lowkey, ‘Mercies of the Lord Remix,’ was bigger than the original because of Dagrin.

Ako Mi Ti Poju-Naeto C

Ako Mi Ti Poju is the second song Dagrin and Naeto C collaborated on. For some reason, this song is one of Dagrin‘s underrated collaboration. But when it comes down to it, it displays his ability to discuss the vanity with his trademark roots in archetypal Hip-Hop.

At the beginning of Dagrin’s verse, the beat switches to announce his arrival on the song to which he doesn’t disappoint with lyrical wordplays

The part of, “Mo lo sa ATM, mo gba gbem, Mo mu Sagem, so I call all of them…” will always be impressive.

Owo Ati Swagga- Cartiair

In 2009, Nigerian rapper, Cartiair dropped what is now clear was a trap song. It was the smash hit single, ‘Owo Ati Swagger,’ with the beat sampled from Lil Wayne’s 2008 “Milli” song, the song glorified all things prim, proper and bougie.

While the song was a successful hit the remix was unsurprisingly not as big. However, Dagrin’s verse on the song is unforgettable. While the song dropped in December 2009, it did not really take off till after Dagrin passed.

He took the beat and dropped a delivery that merged the central theme of braggadocio and vanity with impressive bars. It’s hard to forget his wordplay with the metaphors of the crotch, Gucci, Prada, Barbers and Clippers and how he was not, ‘a rapper, but a lyrical tyrant.’

Champion(Remix)- General Pype

The first time most people heard the name Barack O’ Grin was from this song. On this song, Dagrin raised the bar so high with his verse leaving his imprint on the song despite it having artists like Vector, Naeto C, Sasha P and GT on it.

Emi Ni- Ruggedman

Released in 2010 off Ruggedman’s “Untouchable” album, “Emi Ni” is one of the last songs Dagrin did before his death.

“Emi Ni” is a Yoruba phrase word that means “It’s Me” in English. With two strong verses, Dagrin reminds people why he is a lyrical monster. The Music video was released after the passing of Dagrin.

KabaKaba- Konga

On “KabaKaba“, Fuji and Hip-Hop meet to produce an eargasm. Dagrin opens the song with a fire verse.

Efimile-YQ

Produced by the late Dokta Frabz, Dagrin raps about envy and how people are on his case to explain his source of wealth.

Kosorombe-Dipp

While Afrobeat and Afropop is currently the main genre dominating the Nigerian Music Industry, in the late 90s to early 2000s, Rap/Hip-Hop was the reigning genre.

Thanks to the influence from the American Hip-Hop genre, a lot of Nigerian Artists as of that time produced songs that fused Hip-Hop and R’n’B sung mostly in English or the artist’s local dialect.

Today, we look back at those songs that rocked the dancefloor and changed the music industry.

Catch Cold- Maintain

At the time of its release, if you weren’t rocking to this song, you wouldn’t be seen as cool. Maintain was made of cousins, Tolu Maintain and Olu Maintain who were popular in the early 2000s for their catchy rap songs.

‘Catch Cold’ released in 2002 was one of their popular hit songs, the song sampled Ludacris’ “Area Codes”.

Mr Lecturer- Eedris Abdulkareem

Conversations on the success of the rap industry won’t be complete without the inclusion of Eedris Abdulkareem. The music Activist irked a Whole sitting President with his socio-political song, “JagaJaga”

In 2006, the rapper released a song titled “Mr Lecturer,” a song that tells the story of the act of lecturers having S*x with the student to make them pass. Years later the song became relevant after the popularity of BBC’s “Sex for Grades” documentary.

Pon Pon Pon- Dagrin

Late Dagrin is remembered for his impact on the rap industry in just the short time he spent, most especially making Indigenous rap songs commercial success. One of the songs that made him popular was ‘Pon Pon Pon’, off his sophomore album “C.E.O.”

Producer, Sossick provides back up vocals, while DaGrin runs into bar after bar about his innate confidence and well-versed rap skills. The result is what perhaps became Nigeria’s first viral hit with quips and references spawned off Da Grin’s cheeky lyrics on social media and everyday conversations.

Shakamo- Remedies

Comprising resident rapper Eedris Abdulkareem and singers Tony Tetuila and Eddie Remedy, the Remedies were a Hip-Hop group that dominated airwaves between the late 90s and early 2000s.

“Shakomo” released in 1997 was one of their big hits that rocked the dancefloor. The hook is mostly sung in Yoruba is handled by Eedris, and the melody leans into the smoothness of R&B.

Nobody Test me- Jess Jagz ft M.I Abaga, Ice Prince

Former Chocolate City artists, M.I Abaga, Jesse Jagz, & Ice Prince have had a huge impact on the evolution of Naija Hip-Hop.

This 2010 released single “Nobody Test Me” by Choc Nation featuring M.I Abaga, Jesse Jagz, and Ice Prince is a clear testament to that.

Kabakaba- Konga ft Remi Aluko, Dagrin

Released in 2011, ‘Kabakaba’ was the first single off Konga’s Album of the same name.  Featuring Fuji artist, Remi Aluko and Late Dagrin, this song showed how the Fuji genre and Hip-hop are of the parent and blend well.

Baraje -Ruggedman

Ruggedman was one of the men who shaped the Nigerian Hip Hop/Rap Music Industry. Though he was known for his controversial style of pushing hip hop music (which includes “beef” and firing shots at other rappers/artists), it’s kinda like his own way of giving it an identity, he also released some hits that rocked the dancefloor back then.

Released in 2005, “Baraje” was one of such songs that got people dancing at the time of its release. It was produced by the late music producer, OJB Jezreel.

Ten over Ten- Naeto C

“Ten Over Ten” is the third single from Nigerian rapper Naeto C‘s Super C Season album. It was released on August 16, 2010.

The song is produced by Nigerian producer Ty Mix. It is an up-tempo track and its rhythm and lyrics have a good laid back feel to it.

Yebariba Samboribobo- Sauce Kid

Sauce Kid who now goes by the alias ‘Sinzu’ now was one of the rappers who had the clubs banging with their groovy tracks.

His instant hit song “Yebariba Samboribobo“ (a spin-off Remy Ma’s Conceited and produced by Scott Storch) was a national anthem and later on, parlance now commonly used amongst Nigerians.

DJ Stramborella – Efrebor

Stramborella undoubtedly is one of Nigeria’s foremost DJs who engineered the music artship alongside his wheel-spinning prowess.

Together with Slim and Jimmy Jatt, they pioneered the trend that has become a game-changer for Deejaying industry.

This throwback takes us to the time when his dance hall track Efrebor (built on Beenie Man’s Dude instrumentals) reigned supreme.
