• Telecel Ghana Music Awards 2025: Full nominee list officially announced

After weeks of eager anticipation, the nominees for the 26th Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) have finally been unveiled, setting the stage for one of Ghana’s most prestigious music events in 2025.

The grand announcement was made on Saturday, March 15, 2025, through a live broadcast on TV3 and streamed across the official social media pages of the Ghana Music Awards, ensuring fans worldwide could tune in.

Scheduled for May 3, 2025, at the Accra International Conference Center, this year’s TGMA promises fierce competition as Ghana’s top artists battle for the most coveted accolades in the industry.

The road to TGMA 2025 officially kicked off on January 21, 2025, when nominations opened. Charterhouse, the event organizers, received an overwhelming response, with over 1,500 submissions from more than 130 artists and music groups, spanning a variety of genres. A panel of industry professionals meticulously reviewed the entries, ensuring a rigorous and transparent selection process.

However, the most coveted awards—referred to as the “Big 5″—always spark the most excitement and debate. This year’s nominees for these highly anticipated categories are:

Reimagined histories

Hiplife and Highlife from Ghana, rooted in the country’s rich cultural history, remain highly exported due to their fusion of traditional Highlife melodies with contemporary beats that keep them globally relevant.

Artists like King Paluta, Fameye, and KiDi are leading the way in blending traditional Highlife melodies with modern sounds. Fameye’s Very Soon and King Paluta’s Aseda—a heartfelt song of gratitude—are examples of how the genre is evolving. Their fresh take on Highlife has helped drive a 54% increase in global streams, a sign of the genre’s appeal to both local and international audiences.

In Kenya, Arbantone is mainly characterized by beats from samples of  Kenyan old-school hits. This sound combines elements of Gengetone and old Jamaican riddims, led by a wave of young rappers who bring the raw lyricism of Gengetone. Captivating young audiences, Arbantone is quickly rising on local music charts.

Arbantone grew significantly in 2024, partially thanks to viral dance challenges on social media. Artists like Dyana Cods’ “Set It”, harnessed the genre’s infectious beats and catchy lyrics to connect with her fans. The song became one of the most popular Arbantone tracks in Kenya, securing the number 3 most streamed Arbantone track in Kenya as revealed by the 2024 Spotify Wrapped data.

Embracing experimental sounds

Nigeria’s Alté is becoming more popular abroad, where it’s now the country’s fourth-most exported genre in 2024. Pronounced “uhl-teh,” a shorthand for alternative, you may have heard the experimental mix of Afrobeats, R&B, and hip-hop, with electronic influences on tracks like Soh-Soh by Odeal or Amaarae’s Wanted. The likes of Amaarae, Lady Donli and Odunsi (The Engine) paved the way for a new generation of artists like DEELA, DETO BLACK and brazy to tap into Alté’s rebellious, bold and unconventional brand of self-expression. The global success of Alté-influenced musicians like Tems, Rema and Odeal symbolises how the genre is taking its place in mainstream music culture. Countries like Ghana have embraced the sound with over 60 billion Spotify streams, and Alté now has 41% more global plays than it did a year ago.

South Africa’s Afro House, known for its deep rhythms and soulful vocals, has become a favourite in electronic music circles around the world. DESIREE and DJ Shimza have been instrumental in influencing the growth of Afro House. DESIREE sets blend African rhythms with modern electronic sounds, while DJ Shimza’s electrifying global performances have propelled the genre to new heights. As more artists from around the world incorporate African sounds into their music, the genre has influenced global dance floors.

Household names

Afrobeats continues to lead Africa’s music revolution, evolving rapidly and driving the movement forward. In 2024, the genre saw a significant 28% increase in global streaming. Tracks like Santa by Ayra Starr, Rauw Alejandro, and Rvssian highlight the genre’s versatility, while Calm Down by Rema and Selena Gomez underscore its widespread international appeal. Collaborations like Skillibeng and Tyla’s Jump, Gunna showcase Afrobeats’ adaptability and its growing dominance on global charts.

Amapiano, meanwhile, has emerged as Africa’s fastest-growing genre, with a phenomenal 59% increase in global streaming in 2024. Another sign that the future of global music will undoubtedly feature even more beats, grooves, and melodies from the continent

At the 2024 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), numerous Ghanaian musicians were honored, showcasing their talents amid fierce competition.

In a self-recorded video, Emmanuel Kofi Botwe, popularly known as Kwaw Kese, a prominent figure in the Ghanaian entertainment scene, humorously advises self-proclaimed dancehall king Shatta Wale to gracefully exit the music industry and explore new avenues.

Kwaw Kese asserts that Shatta Wale’s era has come to a close, urging him to admit it and retire gracefully, while also discouraging unnecessary attacks on fellow industry players.

The renowned “Gyimii” hitmaker points out that in today’s Ghanaian entertainment landscape, prominent names like Stonebwoy, Kuami Eugene, Kidi, Kwesi Arthur, and Black Sherif dominate the conversation when discussing great musicians.

“Now we dey talk about Kwesi Arthur, Kuami Eugene, Kidi among others. They don’t mention your name. Because your time has passed”, he said.

Kwaw Kese questions Shatta Wale’s self-proclaimed status as an unmatched musician, highlighting that many of his songs lack substance, using “Wo maame Tw3” as a prime example of this.

“The stupid songs that you did. That your “Wo maame tw3″ and others you did where did you think you could go with it?”, he added.

“Stonebowy is doing big things with the world. If you claim you be dancehall artist and you are doing kpuu kpaa then you be jon”, he added.

KiDi, whose full name is Dennis Nana Dwamena, developed an early interest in music and began singing at a young age. He was part of the MTN Hitmaker competition in 2015, where he emerged as the winner, providing a significant platform for his music career.

KiDi is signed to Lynx Entertainment, a Ghanaian record label known for nurturing the talents of various artists in the country. The label has been instrumental in the success of artists like KiDi and Kuami Eugene.

He released his debut studio album titled “Sugar” in 2019. The album features a blend of Afrobeat and highlife music and includes popular tracks like “Sugar Daddy” and “Gyal Dem Sugar.”

KiDi has produced several hit songs that have gained popularity not only in Ghana but also across the African continent. Some of his well-known tracks include “Odo,” “Say You Love Me,” “Adiepena,” “Touch It” and “Enjoyment.”

Ghanaian musician KiDi spoke candidly about how stardom has impacted his mental health in an interview with BBC Africa’s Daniel Dadzie for World Mental Health Day. Destigmatizing and emphasizing mental health in the music business is greatly enhancing Africa’s music scene.

The Afrobeats singer stated, “It’s good for things to not always be flawless. His open discussion of how stardom has affected his mental health sends an important message to his followers and other musicians.

KiDi has previously discussed how his struggles with popularity and success have been publicized.

The Ghanaian superstar opens out about his health issues in the song I Lied.

He acknowledged lying about his health by claiming to be OK when he wasn’t. The musician discusses developing a secure and healthy attitude for himself in his interview with BBC Africa’s Daniel Dadzie. The musical phenomenon remarked about how everyone needs solid support networks, regardless of their industry.

The Ghanian music awards Artist of the Year winner, advised himself and other artists to learn to live in the moment, “I’m one of those people that when good things happen, like you said I won artist of the year; the next morning I wake up and I’m like ‘what next’?”.

KiDi talked about his treatment sessions when asked how he battled to keep his mental health. Additionally, he talked about how his friends and family had helped him along the process.

Ghanaian artist, KiDi, has expressed his dissatisfaction with the frequent comparison of the Nigerian and Ghanaian music industry.

He thinks it’s disappointing and counterproductive for Ghanaians to constantly complain on social media about how great Nigeria’s music business is doing.

KiDi asserted unequivocally that just because Nigerian musicians are gaining global and local success does not imply that Ghana’s music industry is falling behind.

The ‘Girl dem sugar’ held that both sectors should be valued for their distinctive contributions because they each had qualities and potential.

KiDi argued for a more proactive strategy as opposed to engaging in endless comparisons.

He advised Ghanaians to take the time to research and learn from the success story of Nigeria by comprehending the elements that Nigeria’s music industry has benefited from and that Ghana can apply to further enhance its music scene.

Ghanaian high-life artist Dennis Nana Dwamena, better known as KiDi, spoke openly about the upsetting incident he went through when it was reported falsely that he had had a stroke while unwell.

KiDi discussed how the false allegations affected him as well as his family, friends, and the brands he works for in an open interview on Daybreak Hitz at Hitz FM.

As you may recall, KiDi expressed his frustration when he discovered that the reports were false and that they were quickly going viral on social media and other platforms.

His discomfort during the event was increased by the overwhelming amount of worried calls, including one from his frightened mother.

The singer didn’t take the situation lightly and considered taking legal action against the bloggers responsible for spreading the false news.

He confided in Richie, the CEO of Lynx Entertainment, questioning the continuous recurrence of such malicious stories. It was evident to KiDi that certain individuals were taking advantage of such situations for their benefit

After deliberating about the best course of action, KiDi and his team opted against filing a lawsuit and made the decision to ignore the bad news. Instead, they concentrated on finding responsible solutions to the problem.

Without going into detail, KiDi said in February that he had to postpone his North American tour, which was supposed to take place in March 2023. Sadly, this sparked suspicions and speculative claims, with some saying he had a stroke. Richie Mensah from Lynx Entertainment quickly refuted these assertions, highlighting the fact that they were clickbait.
