Napoli coach Antonio Conte has shared his frustration over the club’s failure to retain its top players, Victor Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, during his short tenure.

The shortlist for the world’s most prestigious individual football award has been unveiled in anticipation of the ceremony scheduled for October 30 in Paris. Leading the pack are Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland, two of the standout contenders for this coveted accolade.

The 2022–23 UEFA Champions League player of the year is Manchester City midfielder Rodri.

Rodri scored a beautifully hit side-footed strike past Andre Onana in the 68th minute of the game to give Man City the victory in the closely contested final on Saturday against a determined Inter team.

The 26-year-old midfielder has been named the 2022–23 Champions League’s standout performer by UEFA’s Technical Observer panel as a result of his game-winning contribution in the final and his overall excellent play for Man City in Europe.

Last week, Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti was questioned about Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Victor Osimhen, both of whom are lighting up Serie A for Napoli this season and have turned the club into a possible dark horse in the Champions League.

Unsurprisingly, affluent European goliaths have taken an interest in both Kvaratskhelia and Osimhen, with Real among those following the development of the former this season.

As reported last month, excessive spending in Chelsea has made Osimhen their main summer target. Manchester United have also been connected with the Nigerian, while Real Madrid may require a new ‘number nine’ as there is no viable replacement for 35-year-old Karim Benzema.

“Kvaratskhelia is a great player, he is doing well with Victor Osimhen, they are very efficient,” Ancelotti enthused, praising both without saying anything concrete.

“Italian clubs are doing well in the Champions League. There could be three clubs in the quarter-finals, which would be a strong signal to Europe,” he added, referring to Milan and Inter already making it through from the last 16 this month – Napoli hold a 2-0 lead over Eintracht Frankfurt.

Napoli is confident in keeping Kvaratskhelia for at least one more season beyond this one. There is anticipation that he will sign a new deal with a significant pay increase despite the interest from other parties.

Every significant club in Europe is keeping an eye on the status of “Kvaradona,” including Manchester City, Newcastle, and Paris Saint-Germain.

Napoli is also hoping to maintain star centre-back Kim Min-Jae by offering him a new contract for more than double his current €45 million.

Osimhen is the most likely of the club’s three most significant assets to be sold before the start of the next season, however, president Aurelio De Laurentiis has said that Napoli won’t be saying goodbye to their top players anytime soon.

“It won’t be difficult to keep our best players, we’re good with contracts – but never say never in case of crazy proposals. I think they will stay for long time,“ he said last month.
