Premier League giants Arsenal FC have bolstered their goalkeeping department with the signing of Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea on a permanent deal, bringing an end to the Spanish international’s eventful spell at Stamford Bridge.

The North London club officially confirmed the acquisition via its website on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, stating that Kepa would join the squad ahead of the new season.

The 29-year-old shot-stopper arrives following consecutive loan spells at Real Madrid and AFC Bournemouth, where he regained form and consistency.

Kepa, speaking after completing his move, expressed excitement over the new chapter of his career and revealed the influence of Arsenal’s project under manager Mikel Arteta and goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana.

 “I am really, really happy to be here, really excited, and looking forward to what is coming. The ambition that is shown in this club, when I talk with Mikel Arteta and Inaki Cana, how much they show me their desire to win… I think we are so close to winning and, hopefully, altogether, we can achieve it.”

His signing is expected to intensify competition in Arsenal’s goalkeeping ranks, which already includes David Raya, who joined permanently from Brentford earlier this year.

Kepa made headlines in August 2018 when he became the most expensive goalkeeper in football history, completing a record-breaking move from Athletic Bilbao to Chelsea for £71.6 million.

During his time at Stamford Bridge, he was part of title-winning squads that lifted the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.

In the 2023/24 season, Kepa returned to Spain on loan with Real Madrid, featuring in key matches as the club secured both the Champions League and Spanish Super Cup titles.

He spent the 2024/25 season with Bournemouth, impressing with solid performances that helped him regain attention from top clubs.

Mauricio Pochettino has revealed whether Kepa Arrizabalaga or Robert Sanchez will be Chelsea’s new No.1 goalkeeper.

After losing Edouard Mendy this summer, the Blues recruited Sanchez from Brighton for £25 million ($31.68 million) in order to compete with Arrizabalaga for the No. 1 spot at Stamford Bridge.

The signing raised speculation over who would wear the gloves between the posts, as the former Athletic Bilbao keeper has had some nerves since joining in 2019 for a club record £71 million ($91m).

 However, Pochettino has no doubts over his No. 1 choice as he backed Arrizabalaga to be the preferred custodian.

“Sanchez and Kepa know they are going to fight for the No. 1 position. At the moment, Kepa is a little bit ahead. With time, we will see if Robert is there and can challenge Kepa,” he told reporters.

Pochettino’s announcement also puts an end to Bayern Munich’s hopes to pursue Arrizabalaga as the German giants seek protection for Manuel Neuer.

According to reports, the Bundesliga champions made an initial bid for the shot-stopper that included a season-long loan agreement with a buy option.

However, with Pochettino stating his ambitions for the Spaniard, a move to Germany seems unlikely in the near future.

Spanish goalkeeper Sanchez was unveiled as Chelsea’s latest summer signing on Saturday in a £25m deal from Brighton.

The 25-year-old has agreed to a seven-year contract in west London after making 23 Premier League appearances for Brighton last season before losing his starting position to Jason Steele.

Mauricio Pochettino was keen to sign a new shot-stopper to provide cover and competition for current No. 1 Arrizabalaga after Chelsea sold Edouard Mendy to Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli.

But after his ‘exciting’ transfer to Stamford Bridge, Sanchez wants to take over as Chelsea’s starting goalkeeper and has no intention of warming the bench there.

‘I’m really excited,’ he told Chelsea’s official website. ‘It’s an amazing opportunity to work with a coach of that level.

‘We’ve all seen what he’s done at his previous clubs. I think what he brings to clubs is really good and hopefully I suit his playing style.

‘I want to contribute and help the club win trophies. I know it will be a big challenge but I’m ready for it.

‘The opportunities this club will give me are amazing, to develop more as a goalkeeper, to keep learning and to compete for the No. 1 spot and show everyone how good I can be.’

Since Sanchez played with Colwill and fellow Blues defender Marc Cucurella at Brighton, he will run into a few old faces at Chelsea.

Colwill, who impressed while on loan at Brighton last season, is anticipated to play a significant role for Chelsea this year, while Cucurella, an ex-Seagulls star, finished a £60 million transfer to West London around this time last year.

‘I spent last season with Levi and we’ve got a really good friendship now,’ Sanchez said. ‘I think the spell at Brighton was really good for him, it got him ready for what he’s going to face at Chelsea.

‘He’s a top player and still only 19, so the sky is the limit for him.’

Sanchez, who has two Spain caps, joined the team in 2013 at the age of 15, and made 90 appearances for Brighton.

Chelsea have announced the signing of goalkeeper Robert Sanchez from Brighton.

After looking for a new goalkeeper to compete with Kepa Arrizabalaga, the Blues settled on Sanchez and immediately agreed on a deal for the 25-year-old that is expected to be about £20 million.

Having passed his medical, Sanchez has put pen to paper on a seven-year contract to become Chelsea’s seventh signing of the summer.

“We’re very pleased to welcome Robert to Chelsea and he adds further quality to our goalkeeping unit,” said sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, the latter of whom also joined from Brighton last summer.

“Robert has repeatedly proved himself in the Premier League and been capped by his country. We are excited to watch him work with Mauricio and his coaching team during the season ahead.”

Ben Roberts, the goalkeeping coach for Chelsea, who served as a coach under Graham Potter at both Brighton and Chelsea before being elevated to a more prominent position at Stamford Bridge this summer, worked closely with Sanchez.

Chelsea’s current lead goalkeeping coach is Toni Jimenez, who joined as part of Mauricio Pochettino’s backroom staff.

Sanchez departs Brighton with 87 Premier League matches to his name, and it was that experience in England that endeared him to Chelsea’s recruiting team, who were looking for an experienced name to compete with Arrizabalaga.

Reports suggest that Chelsea is nearing the signing of goalkeeper Robert Sanchez from Brighton as they seek to strengthen their goalkeeping options following the departure of Edouard Mendy.

Chelsea has been in search of a capable backup for Kepa Arrizabalaga since Mendy’s move to Al Ahli earlier in the summer. The club has now set its sights on Sanchez.

Chelsea’s goalkeeping coach, Ben Roberts, who initially worked with Sanchez at Brighton and then followed Graham Potter to Chelsea, has played a significant role in the club’s pursuit of the goalkeeper.

At the start of the summer, Chelsea explored a deal for Andre Onana in their search for a top goalkeeper to challenge Kepa. However, Onana ultimately joined Manchester United. A bid for Mike Maignan was also rejected due to AC Milan’s high asking price.

Chelsea have confirmed goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has officially left the club in order to join Al Ahli in the Saudi Pro League.

Under previous manager Thomas Tuchel, Senegal was the Blues’ primary goalkeeper and was vital to their successful Champions League run in 2020–21, allowing only twice in seven games.

The 31-year-old Senegal international is the newest player to leave Stamford Bridge during the Premier League club’s ongoing summer of change.

After Kalidou Koulibaly and N’Golo Kante left for teams in the Saudi Pro League, Al-Hilal and Al-Ittihad, respectively, he is the third player to leave Chelsea for a side in the Saudi Pro League.

A statement from Chelsea said: “Edouard Mendy has left Chelsea after three seasons and completed a permanent transfer to Saudi Professional League side Al-Ahli.
“The 31-year-old will be best remembered at Stamford Bridge for the key role he played on our run to Champions League glory in 2021.
“Having started his career in the lower tiers of French football – and even spending several months without a club – Mendy rose to the pinnacle of European football with Chelsea.

Mendy initially joined the Blues in 2020, moving from Rennes, and helped the team win the Champions League that year while compiling a club-record nine clean sheets.

Due to his incredible save during Arsenal’s thrilling 2-2 draw with Liverpool at Anfield, Aaron Ramsdale has been awarded the Castrol Save of the Month title for a second consecutive month.

In April, the Arsenal starting goalie was at the top of his game to deny Mohamed Salah a signature goal that would have given his team a crucial point against Liverpool.

In the closing seconds of a hotly contested encounter on April 9, Ramsdale stretched to jump across his goal line and touch a deflected curling attempt from the Liverpool star barely around the post.

Ramsdale has become the first goalie to win the Castrol Save of the Month award twice. The English goalkeeper also won the award in March after a spectacular save to deny Dango Ouattara what appeared to be a definite goal in Arsenal’s 3-2 triumph against Bournemouth at the Emirates Stadium.

Ramsdale is now just the second player to have won the Castrol Save of the Month twice in a single season, joining Nick Pope, who did it in August and January.

The 2022–23 season has seen an overall English goalkeeper dominance, with Ramsdale, Pope, and Jordan Pickford taking home the trophy in five of the first eight months of the campaign.

David de Gea, Lukasz Fabianski, Daniel Iversen, Kepa Arrizabalaga, and Bernd Leno were all up for the April award.

Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga has acknowledged that the team’s performance this season has been negatively impacted by the significant turnover in both players and coaching staff.

In a season in which Chelsea has spent a record amount on transfers to recruit a sizable number of new players, current manager Frank Lampard is the fourth to lead the squad, whether temporarily or otherwise.

The turbulence off the field has affected Chelsea, who are now 11th in the Premier League, and their tenuous chances of winning the Champions League following a 2-0 loss to Real Madrid in the first leg of the quarterfinal match, which might have been much worse.

After that game in Spain, in which the Blues finished with 10 men after Ben Chilwell was sent off, Kepa acknowledged that handling the activity behind the scenes had not been simple.

“There have been three changes of coach, there have been changes in the squad during the season and it is costing us,” Kepa acknowledged.

After the game, Lampard was adamant about finding the positive; he said Chelsea had their chances and still had time to make things right; but, Kepa was unafraid to point out the scale of the task before the Blues.

“We leave with the feeling that they have been superior, it has cost us a lot to play in the opposite half and to create chances,” he said. “It could even have been worse after the expulsion, because 30 minutes with one less [player] at the Bernabeu in the Champions League is a lot.

“They have had more chances, we have a lot to improve for the second leg. The feeling is that we are not at our level, we look at ourselves and the players are the first to be responsible.”

Chelsea’s next match is against Brighton on Saturday before hosting Real Madrid for the second leg of the quarterfinal.

Due to his outstanding save in Manchester United’s 3-0 victory over Leicester City, David de Gea has been awarded the Castrol Save of the Month for February.

De Gea won the Carabao Cup with Manchester United in February, and with his 181st clean sheet for the Red Devils, he broke Peter Schmeichel’s record for the most clean sheets in a season.

One of those 181 shutouts was during Man Utd’s convincing 3-0 victory against Leicester on February 19 at Old Trafford.

On that particular day, goals were scored by Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, but De Gea was as significant, making two saves that were deserving of Castrol Save of the Month nominations.

Both of them were exceptional enough to win the Castrol Save of the Month award, with one being a rapid reaction save to halt Harvey Barnes when the striker was clean through on goal.

As Kelechi Iheanacho headed the ball down into the bottom left corner of the goal, David De Gea was able to dive over his goal line and somehow palm the ball out of harm’s way with his right hand. This save earned him the trophy.

Alisson Becker, Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale, and Kepa Arrizabalaga were among the other contenders for the Castrol Save of the Month title for February.

The past few months have been rather good for Emiliano Martinez, who won the World Cup and the Golden Glove award at the competition.

The World Cup winner contributed to Villa’s victory over Leeds United in January by producing yet another outstanding save.

Martinez was in the ideal position to stop Jack Harrison from scoring from only three yards out after sprinting across his own line to follow a low cross from the right side.

• Aaron Ramsdale vs Tottenham (15/1/23)

In January, Ramsdale gave maybe his best performance of his career in Arsenal’s important victory over Tottenham in the north London derby.

The best of his saves during the contest was unquestionably the one he executed with his left foot, deflecting a drilled Ryan Sessegnon shot just wide of the post.

Edouard Mendy has reportedly turned down a six-year contract offer from Chelsea because he feels he deserves wage parity with Kepa.

The Senegal goalkeeper has reportedly rejected the Blues’ offer of a new long-term contract two and a half years before the conclusion of his current contract because he feels the team is not treating him with enough “respect” regarding salaries, according to the Sun.

The 30-year-old reportedly earns £100,000 a week but he wants a sum close to his rival Kepa Arrizabalaga who is said to be earning almost double.

“Edouard is back at Chelsea and he is ready to play,” a club insider told the Sun. “But there is a feeling that the contract situation is just going nowhere.”

“Edouard has won some huge trophies for Chelsea, but there is a sense that he is not being shown enough respect by the club over a new deal.”

Mendy joined Chelsea from Ligue 1 team Rennes in the summer of 2020, quickly becoming the team’s uncontested No. 1 as they won the 2020–21 Champions League and Club World Cup.

Before winning the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal in Cameroon in February of this year, he was chosen as Fifa’s Best Goalkeeper of 2021.

Mendy began the season as Chelsea’s starting goalkeeper, but Kepa eventually took over after he sustained an injury in September.

It wasn’t until Kepa’s injury during the Blues’ 4-1 Premier League loss to Brighton Hove Albion at the end of October that Mendy was able to reclaim his starting position.

Mendy, who featured in all four matches for Senegal in their run to the World Cup round of 16, is reportedly a transfer target of Serie A champions AC Milan as well as French sides Monaco and Nice.

It will be intriguing to see which goalkeeper Graham Potter chooses for the team’s Premier League encounter against Bournemouth on December 27 given that Mendy has resumed training with Chelsea and Kepa is healthy.
