Speaking on the Afrobeats Intelligence Podcast, the artist, born Kingsley Chinweike Okonkwo, reflected on a time when he felt unseen despite putting in consistent work and building a growing fanbase.

As he put it: “I grew up in an industry that wasn’t fair to me. There wasn’t any attention given to me at any moment. I was doing a lot that the industry wasn’t recognising.”

He went further to explain how emotionally draining it became at the time: “The fans were the ones who were behind me. I did a lot of work; they were not nominating me for awards. And I cried; I was pained.”

Looking back, KCee said things only began to shift after his split from his former music partner, a period that eventually led to a new phase in his career. Although he released several songs afterwards, it was his 2013 hit Limpopo that became a breakthrough and turning point.

Describing that moment, he said: “When ‘Limpopo’ came, oh, I was in tears. I was like, no, God has answered my prayer. He took me to the global market straight. After all the years I’ve worked with Presh, that’s like the biggest record I’ve ever done.”

That experience, he explained, completely changed how he now approaches validation in the industry.

“Right now, when I win awards, or you don’t nominate me, I don’t care. I prefer the rewards to the awards.”

Today, KCee says he’s more focused on impact than trophies, pointing to the success of his 2024 track Ojapiano as proof that his music still resonates widely without traditional industry backing. He noted how quickly the song caught fire online, especially on TikTok.

“I dropped ‘Ojapiano’ like today, the next day, it was doing 120,000 videos on TikTok in one day. And it happened for seven days non-stop. That’s organic. The white people were vibing to it,” he said.

From feeling overlooked to finding viral success and renewed confidence, KCee’s story reflects a full-circle shift—where validation now comes more from the audience than the award stage.

Nigerian singer Kcee has finally spoken on the long-whispered friction between himself and highlife superstar Flavour, revealing that their complicated history stretches back to the early days of Flavour’s career.

In an interview on Yanga FM Lagos, Kcee recounted a moment many fans never knew happened, a time when Flavour was brought to him as an up-and-coming artist seeking a record deal.

According to the “Limpopo” hitmaker, he turned down the opportunity because, at the time, he simply didn’t see the potential.

Kcee explained that the supposed rift between them may have grown from what he described as a “superiority complex,” adding that his own humility often gets misread as weakness.

Despite being consistently successful over the years, he said some fellow artists underestimate his talent simply because he doesn’t brag about his achievements.

“I came into the music industry before Flavour,” he said, recalling how Soso Soberekon had introduced a young Flavour to him. “I was already driving exotic cars and balling before he came to Lagos. I told Soso I can’t sign Flavour because I didn’t see potential in him at that time. It wasn’t because I have something against him.”

Kcee admitted he still doesn’t fully understand why Flavour seems to harbour resentment, especially over past claims of someone “copying” him. But he believes that sometimes, tension arises when people expect you to remain at a certain level only for you to rise beyond their predictions.

“When some people had written you off, hoping that you would be stagnant, and you work hard and get to a level they don’t expect you to reach… that was what happened,” he added.

Despite the whispers and perceived rivalry, Kcee remains unbothered. He says the industry has taught him that time eventually exposes the truth and talent.

“A lot of my colleagues underrate my talent, and my humility also contributed to that. Because I don’t brag. I don’t need it. But time will always prove them wrong,” he said. “Some of those who doubted me in the past have come to apologise and admitted they were wrong.”

For Kcee, his focus remains the same: putting in the work and letting the music speak louder than any lingering tension.

“…person wey Soso bring make I sign? I don dey drive Hummer, Navigator, dey ball before im from East come. I was a freaking big boy… I say I no wan sign. Time go tell.”

The song arrives with high anticipation, following KCee’s playful but confident tease on social media: “You will love it, I promise you,” accompanied by dancing emojis and his trademark “BMK TO THE WORLD” declaration.

It’s the kind of self-assured rollout that reflects both his artistry and deep understanding of his audience.

True to its name, ‘Eburuje‘ draws from Nigerian linguistic traditions that celebrate joy, festivity, and communal spirit.

It’s a deliberate choice that underscores KCee’s long-standing commitment to making music that resonates across generations while staying rooted in cultural authenticity.

From his early KC Presh days to his acclaimed solo career, this balance has been a defining thread in his artistry.

Beyond being another addition to his impressive catalog, ‘Eburuje‘ reinforces KCee’s ability to evolve without losing touch with the elements that have made him an enduring figure in Nigerian music.

His songs often serve dual purposes—sparking life on dance floors while doubling as cultural expressions that honor Nigeria’s linguistic and celebratory heritage.

The track’s release also highlights KCee’s strategic grasp of the industry.

By creating buzz online and timing the drop with precision, he continues to demonstrate the professionalism and savvy that have kept him relevant through multiple eras of Nigerian music.

Ultimately, ‘Eburuje‘ is KCee doing what he does best—crafting infectious, culturally grounded music that unites listeners.

It’s a reminder that his longevity isn’t just about survival, but about consistency, reinvention, and an unshakable bond with his roots.

The track marks another bold chapter in KCee’s evolving sound, blending Afrobeats, hip-hop, and dancehall into a pulsating celebration of success and resilience.

Following the release of his well-received single Abeg, Allota Money sees KCee broadening his artistic horizons by teaming up with two genre-defining figures. Wyclef Jean, whose influence stretches from the golden era of hip-hop to global pop, adds a seasoned lyrical presence and universal gravitas.

His verse not only carries the weight of decades in the game but also reflects the enduring connection between African and Caribbean diasporas in music.

Mr Killa, known for his commanding soca and dancehall delivery, brings the heat from the islands with infectious energy and rhythm. His dynamic contribution adds Caribbean flair to the track’s vibrant, pan-African soundscape, creating a danceable fusion rooted in shared cultural storytelling.

Before dominating the Nigerian music scene, Kingsley Chinweike Okonkwo—popularly known as Kcee—was lacing up his boots with dreams of football stardom.

In a surprising revelation during a recent interview, the “Limpopo” hitmaker opened up about his early passion for football and how it almost led him to wear the green and white of the Super Eagles, following in the footsteps of legends like Jay Jay Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu.

“My first time leaving Nigeria was for football,” Kcee recalled. “I played for Julius Berger and Puma FC. That was before music even entered the picture.”

As a teenager in the mid-90s, Kcee was already making waves on the local football scene. He was part of the generation tipped to succeed the likes of Okocha and Kanu. “Jay Jay and Kanu were ahead of us. After their set, we were supposed to be the next crop of Super Eagles players,” he told Daily Post.

However, his football journey faced a major obstacle: lack of sponsorship. With limited support and mounting challenges, his football dreams started to fade—just as his music ambitions began to take shape.

Everything changed in 2002 when Kcee and Precious John won the Star Quest talent show as the duo KC Presh. The victory didn’t just bring fame; it brought financial reward and clarity.

“I started making money through music. So I had to choose one. That’s why I left football,” Kcee explained.

“The first time I travelled out of this country was football. I was playing for Julius Berger…”

Though he left the football pitch behind, Kcee found his own spotlight, rising to become one of Nigeria’s most recognizable entertainers—proving that sometimes, destiny changes the game plan for something even bigger.

Nigerian singer and Limpopo hitmaker KCee is peeling back the curtain on his personal life, confirming long-rumored details about his past romance with Nollywood star Ebube Nwagbo and giving fans a rare look at his family dynamics.

In a revealing conversation on the Tea With Tay podcast, KCee—whose real name is Kingsley Chinweike Okonkwo—confirmed that he and Ebube were once deeply involved, sharing a relationship that was both public and serious.

“Our relationship was everywhere,” he said. “We were always on the front covers of newspapers, always seated in the front row of every red carpet show. We were close to getting married. Whatever happened, happened.”

Though he’s been married to Ijeoma Okonkwo since 2010, KCee reflected with fondness and humor on his days as a young entertainer drawn to actresses, before the dominance of social media changed the game.

“My scandals were before social media became rampant,” he joked. “I was just a young boy dating one actress. I loved actresses back then—who wouldn’t?”

The eligibility period for this year’s awards spanned from April 1, 2023, to July 31, 2024, during which numerous Nigerian artists released remarkable projects—some of which were recognized, while others were surprisingly overlooked.

However, the Headies faces unique challenges, notably its recurring scheduling delays and execution issues. In this article, we examine some of the most striking omissions from the 17th Headies nomination list.

(Note: This analysis assumes that all omitted works were submitted for consideration.)

Best Recording of the Year

Nominated:

– TEMS—“Burning”
– SEYI VIBEZ—’Different Pattern’
– BURNA BOY—’Higher‘
– AYRA STARR & GIVEON—’Last Heartbreak Song’
– SARZ feat. LOJAY – ‘Billions‘

Notable Snubs:
– Asake—“Lonely At The Top”
– OdumoduBlvck—”Blood On The Dance Floor”

Asake’s ‘Lonely At The Top‘ was arguably the defining track from his sophomore album ‘Work of Art,’ boasting a refined composition that stood out during the review period. OdumoduBlvck’s ‘Blood On The Dance Floor’ was another masterfully crafted record, making its omission surprising.

Producer of the Year

Nominated:

– SARZ—’ Happiness‘
– LONDON—’Ozeba’
– MAGICSTICKS—’Basquiat‘
– REMA/PRODUCER X/CUBEATZ/DEATZ/KLIMPERBOY—’Hehehe‘
– DIBS—’Different Pattern‘

Notable Snubs:

– P.Priime
– Jay Synths
– Blaise Beatz
– KZITO

P.Priime had an exceptional year, contributing significantly to Rema’s ‘HEIS‘ album. Jay Synths, who crafted Flavour’s ‘Big Baller‘ (nominated for Song of the Year), and Kizz Daniel’s ‘Ojapiano,’ also deserved consideration. Blaise Beatz’s work on ‘Twe Twe‘ and KZITO’s contributions to Victony’s ‘Pier 46′ further highlight the gap in the nominations.

Best Collaboration

Nominated:

– Tiwa Savage feat. Asa—’Emotions‘
– OdumoduBlvck, Bloody Civilian & Wale—’Blood On The Dance Floor’
– Shallipopi feat. OdumoduBlvck—’Cast‘
– Chike & Mohbad—’Egwu‘
– Qing Madi & BNXN—’Ole‘
– Kizz Daniel & Davido – ‘Twe Twe Remix‘
– Wizkid feat. Zlatan—’IDK‘

Notable Snubs:

– BNXN & Ruger – “Poe”

The collaborative track ‘Poe‘ by BNXN and Ruger was a standout hit, making its absence from this category quite unexpected.

Afrobeats Single of the Year

Nominated:

– Young Jonn feat. Kizz Daniel & Seyi Vibez—’Big Big Things‘
– Kizz Daniel—’Twe Twe Remix’
– Chike feat. Mohbad—’Egwu‘
– Asake—’Remember‘
– Hyce, Boypee & Brown Joel feat. Davido—’Ogechi Remix‘
– Flavour—’Big Baller’

Notable Snub:

– Kcee—”Ojapiano”

As one of the biggest Afrobeats hits of the eligibility period, Kcee’s ‘Ojapiano‘ had a significant cultural and commercial impact. Its omission is arguably one of the most glaring oversights.

Lyricist on the Roll

Nominated:

– A-Q—’Mogadishu”
– M.I Abaga—’Chocolate City Cypher‘
– Blaqbonez—’Chocolate City Cypher’
– Ladipoe—’Hallelujah‘
– Alpha Ojini—’Efeleme‘

Notable Snub:

– OdumoduBlvck

With tracks like ‘MC Oluomo’ and ‘Saint Obi,’ OdumoduBlvck demonstrated superior lyricism, making his exclusion from this category quite puzzling.

Rookie of the Year

Nominated:

– Llona
– Kaestyle
– Taves
– ZerryDL

Notable Snubs:

– TML Vibez
– Muyeez

Both artists made an impact in the Nigerian mainstream with their breakout projects, and many expected at least one to secure a nomination.

Best Street-Hop Artist

Nominated:

– Seyi Vibez—’Different Patterns’
– Ayo Maff feat. Fireboy DML – ‘Dealer’
– Shallipopi feat. OdumoduBlvck—’Cast‘
– Zhus Jdo—’Johnbull‘
– Mohbad—’Ask About Me’

Notable Snub:

– Kashcoming

With ‘How Low’ and his DJ YK-assisted ‘Oblee,’ Kashcoming left a mark on the street-hop scene, making his exclusion surprising.

Song of the Year

Nominated:

– Kizz Daniel—’Showa‘
– Ayra Starr—’Commas‘
– Chike & Mohbad—’Egwu‘
– Asake—’Lonely At The Top’
– Rema—’Ozeba‘
– Flavour—’Big Baller’

Notable Snub:

– Kcee—”Ojapiano”

Given its immense popularity, ‘Ojapiano’s‘ absence is particularly notable. The track revitalized Kcee’s career and introduced the Igbo flute (Oja) into the Amapiano wave.

Artiste of the Year

Nominated:

– Davido
– Ayra Starr
– Asake
– Rema
– Tems
– Burna Boy

Notable Snubs:

– Seyi Vibez
– Kizz Daniel

Seyi Vibez and Kizz Daniel had stellar years, with their projects delivering some of the biggest Nigerian hits. Their exclusion raises questions about the selection criteria.

Final Thoughts

The Headies, while an essential platform for recognizing musical excellence, continues to grapple with issues of execution and timing. The lack of a fixed calendar year creates eligibility confusion, resulting in inconsistencies.

For instance, Omah Lay’s ‘Moving‘ was nominated despite falling outside the window, and Phyno’s ‘Full Time Job’ was initially listed, then removed after backlash.

Additionally, while new categories were introduced, others—such as Alternative/Traditional Song & Album—were axed without explanation, sidelining a significant portion of Nigerian talent.

For the Headies to maintain credibility and grow in prestige, the organizers must refine their processes, adhere to a structured timeline, and ensure transparency in their selections.

Only then can it truly serve as a definitive reflection of Nigeria’s evolving music landscape.

The track, collaborating with the iconic Theresa Onuorah, showcases Kcee’s ability to blend modern and traditional sounds. Following his earlier single, ‘Netfliss,’ this new project sees him working with celebrated producer Masterkraft to deliver a groundbreaking tune.

‘Champion‘ seamlessly fuses Afrobeats with the traditional Igbo ogene music, offering a sound that bridges cultural and generational gaps. The dynamic mix creates a fresh listening experience, appealing to fans of contemporary music and southeastern Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.

Theresa Onuorah, widely revered as the queen of Egedege music, lends her powerful voice and vibrant energy to the track.

Her contribution not only honours the traditions of Igbo music but also elevates the song to a new level. The chemistry between Kcee and Onuorah is evident, as their unique styles blend effortlessly, creating a synergy that celebrates both past and present musical traditions.

Masterkraft’s production adds a distinct brilliance to the single. Known for his knack for infusing African rhythms into his beats, he masterfully balances the modern grooves of Afrobeats with the raw percussive power of ogene music. The result is an immersive soundscape that transforms *Champion* into more than just a song—it’s a cultural celebration.

As 2024 comes to a close, ‘Champion‘ feels like a triumphant anthem for Kcee’s eventful year. The song celebrates resilience and victory, encouraging listeners to embrace their inner champions.

Nigerian singer Kingsley Okonkwo, better known by his stage name Kcee, recently opened up about the serendipitous way he met his wife, Ijeoma Okonkwo.

During an interview with VJ Adams, Kcee revealed that it was love at first sight when he crossed paths with Ijeoma while delivering wedding invitations for his younger brother, Emeka Okonkwo, popularly known as E-Money.

Kcee recounted, “I met my wife [Ijeoma] when I went to give Charly Boy E-Money’s wedding invitation. The moment I saw her, I knew I wanted to marry her. I even told my friend Presh, ‘That’s my wife.’ He laughed, but I was serious.”

Determined, Kcee approached Ijeoma and personally invited her to the wedding, adding, “I want to marry you.” Initially, she didn’t pay much attention, not realizing he was the famous singer Kcee. Only after a colleague pointed it out, she agreed to share her number with him.

Their conversation quickly became serious as Kcee told Ijeoma, “I don’t want to date you; I want to marry you. Sometimes, dating leads us to see only faults and distracts us from true happiness.”

The couple married in 2010 and now have two children. Their journey stands as a testament to Kcee’s belief in finding happiness by embracing what feels right from the heart.

A public feud has erupted between Nigerian music stars KCee and Flavour, stemming from KCee’s latest song, which closely resembles Flavour’s hit ‘Doings.’

Flavour seemed to initiate the controversy with a cryptic post on X, writing “Copy copy akaria“—a phrase implying imitation. Though he didn’t mention KCee directly, KCee took the comment as a jab and quickly responded with strong words.

In a series of posts, KCee asserted that Igbo music doesn’t belong solely to Flavour, stressing, “You don’t own this genre of music. My music celebrates our heritage, and I won’t apologize.” KCee reminded fans that he has been an industry fixture longer than Flavour, encouraging his counterpart to focus on his success instead of tearing others down.

He further warned Flavour against “gatekeeping” Igbo culture, stating that it belongs to everyone, not any single individual.

Fans have since been debating the issue on social media, taking sides and sparking discussions on cultural ownership and respect within the music industry.

While Flavour has yet to respond, the conflict has drawn widespread attention.

Fans and industry insiders are eagerly awaiting further developments to see if the two artists will reconcile or if this feud will continue to escalate.
