The 52-year-old Dane is set to oversee his first training session with the squad on Wednesday and will make his dugout debut on Friday when Leverkusen host Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga.

“I’ve always regarded Bayer 04 as a very well-structured and ambitious club,” Hjulmand said after his unveiling. “That impression has been reinforced in recent days. To be entrusted with this team is a great honour. The challenge excites me — shaping the future of Leverkusen with both established players and emerging talent, while building on the successes achieved in the past.”

The managerial change comes just a week after Erik ten Hag was dismissed, following only three competitive games in charge. Ten Hag, who took over in the summer after leaving Manchester United in November 2024, departed after a poor start to the Bundesliga campaign despite a promising pre-season.

Leverkusen’s season began with a DFB Pokal win over Grossaspach but quickly faltered in the league with a 2-1 home defeat to Hoffenheim and a 3-3 draw against a 10-man Werder Bremen.

When the defending world champions France resumes Group D responsibilities against Denmark at Stadium 974 on Saturday night, they can guarantee a spot in the final rounds of the 2022 World Cup.

The French national team, led by Didier Deschamps, overcame a deficit against Australia on Tuesday night to begin their championship defence with a resounding victory.

For the second tournament in a row, Denmark was held to the first 0-0 draw of the World Cup. While Tunisia took a share of the spoils earlier in the week, France was on the other side of the stalemate in 2018.

Before Deschamps selected his team, after Deschamps selected his squad, and again during their World Cup journey, France have been beset by injuries. On Tuesday, left-back Lucas Hernandez tore his anterior cruciate ligament during the buildup to Australia’s goal by Goodwin.

Similar circumstances to Hernandez’s have befallen Denmark, as Sevilla midfielder Thomas Delaney, who was substituted against Tunisia at halftime due to a knee injury, has also been forced to withdraw from the competition in order to rehabilitate for a month.

Other than Delaney’s injury, Hjulmand has no new worries heading into Saturday’s game. As a result, he should think about moving Eriksen and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg into a deeper role, which would free up either Mikkel Damsgaard or Jesper Lindstrom to join the attack.

The 29-year-old Andreas Cornelius should only be considered for a substitute role here alongside the injured Yussuf Poulsen after producing one of the worst misses in World Cup history against Tunisia when he miraculously hit the post from a yard out.

Denmark will aim to emulate their emotionally charged run to the Euro 2020 semifinals in Qatar, minus the drama of Christian Eriksen’s horrifying collapse as they announced their official 21-man squad from the 26-man squad for the Qatar World Cup.

In choosing 21 of the 26 players who will represent Denmark at the World Cup in Qatar on Monday, coach Kasper Hjulmand showed loyalty to the players who contributed to recent successful World Cup qualifying and Nations League campaigns.

The final list must be submitted to FIFA by Monday, November 13, with the World Cup scheduled to begin on Nov. 20, and the last five players will be announced following the final round of European matches before the competition.

Eriksen made his international comeback in March after suffering a heart attack during Denmark’s opening game of Euro 2020 and the Manchester United midfielder has been named in Kasper Hjulmand’s final squad for the tournament in Qatar.
