Nigerian Afrobeat and Highlife duo, Ajebo Hustlers, has revealed that some of their friends urged them to give up music because they weren’t originally making a fortune from it.

On the most recent edition of the Shopsydoo-hosted Afrobeats podcast, the “Barawo” singers made this revelation.

The Port Harcourt-born couple claimed that before they ultimately achieved popularity, they had to accept accommodations from several family members and friends as a result of their battle for fame.

They said that at one point they lived with K-Switch, the younger brother of musician D’banj.

They said, “We squatted with K-Switch in 2016. I’m no playing. 2017 nothing was popping. It was 2018, we were still trying to push and then we made a record in 2019 with King Perry. I think we were squatting somewhere then.

“That time we were squatting because music was not working and you now have friends that are telling you, omo, thus music is not working, you sure say you try enter street,”

Hundreds of albums have been released per year for the past two decades, I estimate and here are the top 10 Nigerian albums with no bad song

However, only a small percentage of those ever become hits. Some become hits and become well-known for a period of time. Then only a small percentage of those become classics.

There’s a small percentage of albums that are all hits and no misses among that group. That is extremely uncommon. That’s something we only receive once in a while.

An album on which every song is a banger and there isn’t a single moment of silence? It has to be really rare.

But, without a question, we’ve been fortunate enough to have those once or twice. And it’s virtually always enchanted.

Anyway, without further ado, here are eleven modern Nigerian albums with no poor songs on them. Which one is your personal favourite?

 Kizz Daniel — No Bad Songz (2018)

This happens to be the album that solidified the very concept of ‘no bad songs.’ After his successful debut, Kizz Daniel felt it’d make sense if he did one album with no single filler. Then he did “No Bad Songz.”

An eclectic album with diverse experiments, Kizz Daniel made one of the best albums of the decade in 2018.

Neither we nor him have been able to recover from that, I daresay.

Fireboy — Laughter, Tears, and Goosebumps (2019)

After “Laughter, Tears, and Goosebumps” in 2019, Fireboy left all of his peers behind to join the big leagues. Seriously, that’s a mad album.

How a rookie could manage that is still a mystery to every one of us. An album some have called the best debut since “Superstar,” it was bangers all through.

Every track was literally a hit! In 2019, nobody could touch Fire. Not really, no.

2Baba — Grass 2 Grace (2021)

2Baba released his debut solo album Face 2 Face (2004), which established him as a viable solo artist.

Following the release of his debut album, he released his second album Grass 2 Grace in 2006, which contained hits likes “One Love”, “True Love, “4 Instance”.

2face is the founder of Hypertek Entertainment.

Sean Tizzle – The Journey

The Journey is the first studio album by Nigerian Afro-Pop artist Sean Tizzle.

It was released on April 17, 2014, on Difference Entertainment.

which was released in 2014. The album features guest appearances from Olamide, Reminisce, 9ice, Ice Prince, Naeto C, Kcee and Tiwa Savage.

The album was supported by four official singles— “Mama Eh”, “Komole”, “Kilogbe” and “Kilogbe (Remix)” along with the promotional singles “Mama Eh”.

 Adekunle Gold — Afro-Pop Vol. 1 (2020)

Maybe it’s because of how brief Adekunle Gold kept it. Or maybe it’s because the guy is just too sabi.

“Afro-Pop Vol. 1” was supposed to be an experiment. But damn, look what it became. All ten tracks, bangers! No skips.

 Wizkid — Superstar (2011)

Back in 2011, what Wizkid did with “Superstar” was impossible. But he did it.

How can a new boy make an album and all the songs on it are bops? Heavy bops that hit everywhere? How? Wizkid somehow managed it, though.

9ice — Gongo Aso (2008)

The era of album supremacy in contemporary Nigerian music began with 9ice’s classic, “Gongo Aso.”

Nobody could have done what 9ice did that year sha. Nobody.

 Wande Coal — Mushin 2 Mohits (2009)

Mushin To Mo’Hits (M2M) is the debut album by Nigerian singer Wande Coal.

It was launched on April 12, 2009, under Mo’ Hits Records now Mavin Records.

The album was produced by Don Jazzy and it featured a number of other artists including D’banj, Dr SID, D’Prince, K-Switch!

Brymo — Yellow (2020)

In 2020, one of Nigeria’s finest musicians release his magnum opus.

What Brymo did on “Yellow,” not only will no one else be able to repeat, even he will not be able to do it again.

Asa — Asa (2007)

This is by far the best Nigerian contemporary album of all time. This eponymous album is why Asa is regarded as one of the best to ever do it.

What the “Asa” album did a decade and a half ago, simply cannot be recreated. The whole album is fire.

No single song is not hard. Straight pure bangers. Asa did that!

In 2007, the defunct Mo’hits Records were dominating the industry with its league of talented artists led by Don Jazzy and D’banj, the two founders of the label. The label released its compilation album which set a trend thanks to its success.

A compilation/Collaborative album comprises tracks, which may be previously released or unreleased, usually from several separate recordings by either one or several performers.

The term is used mostly in Nigeria to refer to albums put out by a Label featuring its artists or by two or more artists who are bonded by Friendship.

Mo’Hits- Cirruculum Vitae

Mo Hit Records was a label formed in 2004 by the duo of Don Jazzy and D’Banj upon their return to the country from the United Kingdom.

Thanks to D’banj‘s success in the music industry, the label started to expand, and other artists like Wande Coal, D’prince, KSwitch, Dr Sid joined the imprint.

In 2007, the label released its compilation album, “Curriculum Vitae“. Don Jazzy had first revealed plans for a label collaborative album in 2006.

Curriculum Vitae birthed some hit singles like “Why Me” (Remix), “Pere”, “Ololufe”, “Booty Call”, and “Move Your Body”.

Mavin Records- Solar Plexus

In 2012, after its was confirmed that Don Jazzy and D’banj had gone their separate ways, Fans hoped for reconciliation between the two. In the midst of this, Don Jazzy announced the establishment of Mavin Records on Twitter.

Solar Plexus is a compilation album released by Mavin Records on May 8, 2012. Produced entirely by Don Jazzy, the album comprises 13 tracks

It contains solo tracks from D’Prince, Tiwa Savage, Wande Coal, and Dr SID. “Take Banana” was released as the album’s lead single.

D’Prince remixed the song for his debut studio album Frenzy which he also released in 2012. “Omo Ga” was released as the album’s second single.

EME- Empire Mates State of Mind

Empire Mates Entertainment (abbreviated as E.M.E) was a Nigerian record label founded by Banky W and Tunde Demuren in 2002.

On June 18, 2012, the label released its compilation album Empire Mates State of Mind.

The album’s production was handled by Legendury Beatz, Sarz, Masterkraft, Cobhams Asuquo, Kid Konnect and Spellz.

It was the first collaborative album from the EME crew; featuring Banky W, Wizkid, Skales, Shaydee, Niyola, and Dj Xclusive.

It also features collaborations with X.O Senavoe, Rotimi, and Basketmouth. It the 22-track album produced hit singles like, “Baddest Boy”, “Dance for Me”, “Get Down Tonight”, “Ko Mo Le”, “Sun Mo Mi”, “Don’t Delay Me (Don’t Go There)” and “Change”.

YBNL- YBNL Mafia Family

Yahoo Boy No Laptop Nation, popularly known as YBNL Nation or simply YBNL, is an independent record label founded by Olamide in 2012.

In 2018, the label has dropped a collaborative album titled “YBNL Mafia Family”. 

The album houses 14 tracks done by Olamide, DJ Enimoney, Limerick, Temmie Ovwasa, Picazo, Fireboy DML, Yomi Blaze with additional collaboration from Kizz Daniel, LK Kuddy, Kranium, and Lil Kesh.

Pheelz, Killertunes, Cracker Mallo, and 2Kris all get credit for the production on the album. The album was instrumental in the popularity of Fireboy DML.

“Baddest Boy” is a song by E.M.E acts Wizkid, Skales, and Banky W. It was released on April 2, 2012, serving as the lead single from the label’s compilation album ‘Empire Mates State of Mind‘ (2012).

After the disbandment of Mo’Hits records, Don Jazzy went to establish Mavin Records under which the 2014 hit song, ‘Dorobucci’ was released.

The song was a street anthem that was praised for its production, instrumentation, and composition.

The song featured then Mavin artists, Tiwa Savage, Reeekado banks, Korede Bello, Dr SID, D Prince, Di’Ja, and Don Jazzy himself.

Everybody knows Psquare as one of the most popular music group to have ever blessed  Nigeria with good music.  the duo of Rudeboy and Mr. P who used to be together as a music group Psqure decided to part ways after having some disagreements which involved their elder brother Jude Okoye in 2017.  The duo who came up with the name Rudeboy and Mr.P after splitting has been having an amazing ride with their solo music career.

• Don Jazzy and D’Prince

Worthy to be on this list is music tycoon Don Jazzy and his younger brother, D’Prince. The duo who have been together since the era of Mo’hits records are siblings who have managed to stay relevant win the music industry. While D’prince music career has not been at his peak, his elder brother Don Jazzy seems to be one of the most successful music icons that have spent a very long while in the Nigerian music industry. D’prince is currently part of Mavins records, a record label headed by his elder brother.

• Teniola and Niniola

Topping this list are the Apata children Teniola and Niniola. the two siblings who have had a successful ride in the Nigerian music industry are part of the big female musicians who are currently rocking the Nigerian music space.

Though the duo hardly acts like siblings because of their totally different lifestyle, the duo is, however, part of the few siblings that have emerged in the Nigerian music industry.

According to him, the label ushered in the era of good music and taught other record labels on the power of unity.

He thanked Don Jazzy, D’banj, and the rest of the team for motivating him.

Mo Hits Records was a label that was founded by Nigerian artistes, Don Jazzy and D’banj. The label boasted of artists like Wande Coal, K-switch, D’prince, Dr Sid. The label was later disbanded due to D’banj and Wande Coal leaving the group. Don Jazzy established a new label called Mavin Records.

Mo hits still one of the best thing to ever happen to NIGmusic industry . Gave us good music and thought us how to carry our brothers along. Even if they never come back together, still I say thanks to jazzy n banga n rest of the team for motivating us.
