Juventus are set to bolster their defensive ranks with the loan signing of Chelsea defender Renato Veiga until the end of the season.

The Serie A club has agreed to cover the Portugal international’s wages and will pay a loan fee of £3.8 million (€5 million). However, the deal does not include an option for Juventus to make the move permanent.

Veiga, 21, joined Chelsea last summer in a £12 million move from Swiss club Basel, but he has struggled to cement a regular role in Enzo Maresca’s squad. Primarily a centre-back, Veiga has grown frustrated with being deployed as a left-back, a position he played in Chelsea’s 5-0 FA Cup win against Morecambe.

This season, he has made just one Premier League start, accumulating only 177 minutes in the league, with most of his playing time coming in the UEFA Conference League.
