Cameroon has dropped two spots to 53rd place, while South Africa (59th) and Ghana (70th) have each fallen two and six places, respectively.

On a positive note for African teams, Algeria has climbed five spots to 41st, just two places behind Nigeria. Meanwhile, Congo (58th) and Burkina Faso (63rd) have moved up by two and four positions, respectively.

The Super Eagles will be hoping their recent performances will boost their standing in the next FIFA rankings.

Jose Peseiro, the head coach, revealed that striker Kelechi Iheanacho of Leicester City would be joining the Super Eagles team on Saturday.

Iheanacho was absent from Nigeria’s pre-2023 Africa Cup of Nations training camp in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, due to his recuperating from a muscle issue.

The 27-year-old will now go to Abidjan this weekend instead of joining the Super Eagles in Lagos on Tuesday, as originally planned.

Peseiro also gave an update on Terem Moffi, the forward for OGC Nice.

Moffi entered the game late to replace Victor Boniface of Bayer Leverkusen, who is out of the running due to a groin injury he suffered during training.

Moffi will reunite with his colleagues at camp on Sunday, the Portuguese said.

Our players try to do what I ask them to do in training, It is possible you lose in football, I’m sad we lost. I don’t like to lose matches, but I am very happy with the performance of my players. They did well in the game.”

Peseiro, however, thinks that in future games, his team will need to strengthen their offensive play. He said:

“We didn’t do well in attack at times, I think we can do better. We can improve our game generally,” added the former Saudi Arabia and Venezuela coach. We do well defensively but we can do more offensively and control the ball more,”

Assistant captain, William Troost-Ekong returned to England last Saturday after sustaining an injury in the test game against Algeria’s home-based team. The midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi spent only two days in camp before returning to his club over a hamstring issue.

The likes of captain Ahmed Musa, Leon Balogun, Samuel Chukwueze and Emmanuel Dennis all pulled out of the game as a result of injury.

Former Venezuela and Saudi Arabia tactician, however, insisted his side can cope with their absence.

“We believe in the players that are here, we believe in their abilities. They know what to do and we believe in them.

“I have confidence in them that they will do well. We have enough quality in our team to cope with the absence of those who are not here,” he added.
