Respected Nigerian music journalist and cultural critic Joey Akan has weighed in on the escalating online clash between Wizkid and Seun Kuti, offering one of the most pointed criticisms yet of the Grammy-winning Afrobeats star.

Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) page, the Afrobeats Intelligence founder argued that the ongoing chaos surrounding Wizkid FC is not accidental but rather encouraged by the artist himself.

According to Akan, the latest drama has stripped Wizkid of any claim to innocence regarding the conduct of his fiercely loyal fan base.

In a strongly worded post, Joey suggested that Wizkid has long benefited from and subtly fueled the bitterness his fans direct at other artists while publicly distancing himself from the fallout.

”The best part of this Wizkid and Seun drama is, without a doubt, we now know that FC’s ceaseless campaign of bitterness is endorsed from the top. I’ve always suspected it, but I believed Wiz to be better than directly grooming and feeding a divisive horde. But he isn’t. This episode strips him of plausible deniability when they go on attacks against his colleagues, and destroy sacred altars in his name. It is what he wants. I can’t respect that. I can’t respect formatting chaos using a monkey paw to do your dirty work. A sharp contrast to Burna Boy who doesn’t really put his 11 outsiders to task. He even kicks them. That, I can respect,” he wrote.

Joey’s comments come amid days of heated exchanges between Wizkid and Seun Kuti, a situation that has spilled beyond the artists themselves into fan communities, dragging industry figures and legacies into the mud.

Beyond fan behaviour, Akan also aimed at Wizkid’s perceived detachment from Nigeria after attaining global success. Drawing a sharp comparison with Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, he accused Wizkid of abandoning the very culture and people that shaped his career.

”When Fela got international acclaim, he still fought for his people. When you got international acclaim, you denied your people, and the music culture that nourished you. I know my goat,” he added.

Joey Akan’s intervention has further intensified conversations online, with fans split between defending Wizkid and applauding the journalist for saying what many believe has long gone unsaid.

As the Wizkid–Seun Kuti saga continues to dominate timelines, it is clear that the debate has moved beyond music — touching on legacy, responsibility, and what true greatness should represent in Nigerian pop culture.

Celebrated Nigerian music journalist Joey Akan has delivered a blistering takedown of Burna Boy, accusing the Grammy-winning star of abandoning the very African identity that fueled his rise to global stardom.

The commentary follows Burna Boy’s cryptic social media post earlier this week, where he declared that the “African Giant” had died and was now replaced by a new persona: “Big 7,” described as a self-protective creation born from heartbreak. The message shocked fans and stirred intense debate, but Joey Akan’s response has taken the discourse to another level.

In a fiery thread posted on X, Joey challenged Burna Boy’s claim that he was “betrayed” by his people, calling it a revisionist narrative.

He argued that the African Giant’s demise was self-inflicted, the result of what he termed “an overdose of success.”

“The ‘African Giant’ wasn’t killed by his people. It was suicide,” Joey wrote. “Success came, and with it, a superiority complex. Slowly, Burna Boy distanced himself from the very culture and fanbase that gave him a platform.”

Joey revisited several controversies in Burna Boy’s post-fame journey—from publicly insulting Nigerian fans and calling local culture ‘substance-less’ to aggressive altercations at concerts and blaming audiences for his frustrations.

He argued that the singer’s behavior has grown increasingly narcissistic, portraying criticism as betrayal and alienating the local audience.

“You cut yourself and bled on Nigerians. And when we protested, you called us poor,” he added, referencing Burna’s now-infamous online jabs.

Once lauded as the voice of African resilience and pride, Joey suggests Burna Boy has turned his back on that identity.

His current phase, marked by selective concert performances and cryptic branding, is described as guarded, aloof, and detached from his roots.

The journalist concluded his commentary with a poignant observation:

“You used to sing for us. Now, you sing despite us.”

Joey’s critique has sparked heated conversations online, with fans split between those defending Burna’s artistic evolution and others echoing the journalist’s concerns over fame’s alienating effects.

As Burna Boy leans deeper into his Big 7 era, the rift between local loyalty and global ambition seems more visible than ever—raising the question: Can you be a global giant and still stay grounded in the soil that raised you?

"African Giant" was not killed by 'his people.' It was suicide. Suicide induced by an abundance of success.

Nigerian singer CKay recently opened up about the public’s perception of his smile, sharing insights into why he doesn’t feel compelled to project constant happiness.

In a conversation on the ‘Afrobeats Intelligence podcast with Joey Akan, CKay acknowledged that he often receives compliments on his smile, with many people suggesting he should smile more.

When Akan asked about how people typically react to his smile, CKay responded, “A recurrent review of my smile is that I have a nice smile and I should smile more, like I don’t smile enough.” He speculated that the perception might stem from fans mostly seeing him in pictures, where he doesn’t always smile.

This, he believes, could lead people to assume he’s less cheerful than he might be in person.

CKay linked his reserved demeanour to the creative process behind his upcoming album, revealing that he wasn’t in a particularly happy place while working on it. For him, music should capture the full spectrum of human emotions—both positive and negative.

“I wasn’t smiling when I started working on this album; the mood was reality,” he explained, adding that always smiling isn’t realistic and that creating art involves embracing both highs and lows. “Making music only about the positive things, it won’t be realistic,” CKay stated.

He emphasized that for him, authenticity in music means reflecting life’s full range of emotions, allowing his art to resonate deeply with listeners who experience similar ups and downs.

Others believe it could be a genuine homage, with Odumodublvck acknowledging Akan’s role in his career.

The music community eagerly awaits the release of the single, curious to unravel the true meaning behind the dedication. Will it be a light-hearted jab, a sincere tribute, or something entirely unexpected?

Recall, During a recent freestyle session, Odumodublvck impressed fans with his lyrical prowess as he confidently declared his ties within the music industry.

In a line that sparked curiosity, he rapped, “I got a co-sign from Burna, co-sign from Skepta, co-sign from Wizkid, co-sign from Davido, and I am not all that. Co-sign from Baddo.”

In his assertion, Odumodublvck emphasized his credibility by mentioning his connections beyond Nigeria’s music scene, including British-Nigerian rapper Skepta.

According to Ayra Starr, when she was barely 14 years old, her math teacher predicted she would pursue a career in music.

She claimed that her Muslim teacher was impressed by her curiosity and love of music when she brought up this topic on the most recent episode of “Afrobeats Intelligence” with Joey Akan.

According to Ayra Starr, the instructor inspired her to join the choir and get better at singing.

She claims he explicitly guaranteed she would sign with Mavin, where she now is, and he also urged her to post her videos online for others to watch.

“I have a teacher that literally inspired me. He said I was going to be signed to Mavin. It’s crazy. He was my math teacher.”

She also discussed her upbringing. Despite not coming from a religious home, the singer spoke of going to a deeper life school. She discussed various instances in which her curiosity resulted in trouble.

She cited particular instances where she contended that God never said that women shouldn’t wear trousers and was rebuked for doing so. Starr also related a time when she painted her nails pink and received criticism from the tackers for it.

The Mavin signee persisted in pursuing her passions, penning songs and giving performances at school functions, despite frequently receiving beatings at her Christian school for asking too many questions.

Nigerian entertainment analyst and music journalist, Joey Akan has revealed how Afrobeats maestro, Davido was instrumental to his career success in the early stage.

He claimed that when he originally launched his podcast Afrobeats Intelligence and was somewhat unknown, an interview with OBO provided him with a boost.

Joey claims that despite being weary from trying to organize a conversation during Davido’s “A Better Time” tour, the FIA singer still found time to talk to him.

He explained that the DMW founder stated that “I don do American interviews, Na my Nigerian brother own. Make we do am.”

Joey shared the amazing incident on Twitter, noting that he needed Davido’s support at the moment.

He said; Little story about Davido. During the early stages of building Afrobeats Intelligence, I was seeking an interview for the platform.

I had called his people for an interview at the end of the day, with Davido drained of every energy. You could hear the strain in his voice.

But once he heard it was me, he quickly snapped back into action, telling his people: “I don do American interviews, Na my Nigerian brother own. Make we do am.

He proceeded to stay on the phone with me for over an hour, talking music, process, creativity and breaking new markets. I was touched.
I was touched by his gesture, because my platform was new and unknown, and could provide little leverage as justification for that interview.
In an interview, singer Tekno revealed how Wizkid had influenced and inspired his massive hit song “RARA.”

In an exclusive conversation with Joey Akan, Tekno explained how Wizkid’s smash single “Ojuelegba” served as the inspiration for his record-breaking song “RARA,” which dominated the airwaves after its release.

The vocalist admitted that although the final production’s instrumentation was different, the acapella for the two songs actually sounded similar.

According to him, the difference is not obvious, but if you strip the beats of RARA, you will definitely get the vibe of OJUELEGBA.

Tekno opened up on how he is strongly influenced by something he liked and that was what gave birth to ‘RARA.’

He admitted that he had actually made “RARA” because he had appreciated “Ojuelegba” so much.

“I enjoyed Wizkid’s OJUELEGBA so much, I made RARA out of it. The character of beat is very different”

The Headies award show’s organisers have received an apology from Habeeb Okikiola, better known as Portable.

This followed after the ‘Zazoo’ crooner tackles the organisers for disqualifying him as one of the nominees of the award show over an alleged death threat.

Recall that on May 24, Portable received a nomination for Best Street Artist and Rookie of the Year at the Headies Awards.

The Nigeria Music Award publicly announced that they have disqualified the musician following his admission to being the leader of the lethal cult known as One Million Boys.

In response to the disqualification, Portable posted a message on his Instagram page. He made it clear that he had no regrets about what he had done.

However, going by his recent post, he seems to have made a u-turn about his stance on the issue.

Yesterday, July 27, he shared a video apologizing to the organizers as he urged his fans to continue voting.

Social media users expressed their thoughts as they took to his comment section.

Netizens and music lovers have aired their opinions as regards why Burna Boy was not disqualified from the 2022 Headies Award following the disqualification of Portable.

Music fans on the Bird app are voicing their concerns about the portable’s 2022 headies disqualification.

The conversation sprung after popular journalist Joey Akan called out the headies academy for choosing to disqualify Portable because he is a smaller artist.

According to the award-winning music writer, the headies academy is meant to honour artistic achievement rather than function as a moral tool to regulate their behaviour.

Your job is to cast shiny trophies, and hand them over to people who have shown artistic distinction, while making your own bank.

It's a music award show. A platform to celebrate artistic brilliance. Not a moral tool for censoring behaviour.

You're not the police or NBC.

Recall, mp3bullet.ng reported that Burna Boy was in the news recently after his security aide allegedly shot people in the club, an investigation that the Nigerian police also promised to investigate.

Joey Akan took a stance on that point, slamming the headies academy for disqualifying Portable and leaving Burna Boy due to what he regarded as a small vs big artist situation.

As a result of the tweets, there has been a flurry of discussion on Twitter about a variety of subjects involving Burna Boy, Portable, and the headies.

Rapper M.I Abaga has taken to Twitter to respond to what he considers a disrespectful statement to rappers from music journalist, Joey Akan.

Joey Akan had taken to Twitter to shade rappers over none of them meeting with Dababy when he came into Nigeria.

According to the Journalist, Nigerian rappers were entitled who refused to work and only complain.

M.I who came across the tweet didn’t take well to it as he dragged Joey, claiming that the Journalist was insecure and insulting people to feel better.

In his words;

“You have a small mind.. so not sure you understand what false equivalency is..

What’s d point of dis tweet? To insult rappers for wanting respect?

I guess self respect would be an offensive idea to you.

Insecure little Joey insulting people to feel better ♥️ grow up”

In another tweet, he declared Joey as the enemy of Hip-Hop who ‘continuously spits on our efforts and debases the Hip-hop community.’

Still, on his rant, Abaga said that one ‘can always tell a deeply insecure person when the main thing they are known for is speaking ill of others.’
