Why does the Nigerian music industry need to explore beyond Lagos?

Lagos is considered the hub of African music, where artistry goes mainstream in the Nigerian music industry, in fact not only art but almost everything along the lines of Nigeria

Also regarded as the highest level of everything, the media, money, the biggest concerts happen in Lagos, so are the opportunities for growth.

Davido

Over the past five years, music has been the latest trend in Nigeria, regardless of the genes, hip hop, rap, afrobeat, gospel, cultural and traditional music.

Music is one of the most entertaining forms of art, it cuts across all forms of human feelings, the; emotional, social as well as physiological well-being of humans.

In fact, some people believe music is a form of therapy used to uplift the spirit and heal wounded hearts.

We now have young Nigerians that want to take the position of old Nigerian musicians, even though some have successfully taken the position and changed everything about music in Nigeria and Africa as a whole.

Wizkid

In a summary, it is the headquarters of Nigeria’s entertainment, Nigeria’s version of US Hollywood.

While New York City/Long Island is regarded as the regional scene that has received international attention in the US, many cities abroad also have vibrant local Hip Hop cultures as well.

Olamide

Some Nigerian artists dwelling in certain geographical proximity are being marginalized and Unaccordingly rated in the Nigerian music industry, but then I’d let it slide to avoid misconception in the context.

This is drawing us to the point of the topic in the conversation, it’s high time the industry decentralized to include other regions in the standard music conversation.

Burna Boy

Moreover, it is very interesting and thought-provoking to have the musical luminaries across Nigeria, Eastern (Phyno, Flavour, Zoro, Tekno, Patoranking, Psquare), South-south (Timaya, Burna Boy, Omah Lay, Duncan mighty, Mr 2Kay), the middle belt (Terry G, 2Baba, Joe EL, Bella Alubo) and the north-central (Ice Prince, Jesse Jagz, M.I Abaga), but still, the region has no pivot in the industry yet these regions steadily churned out artistry creatives.

Phynofest

However, expanding the spotlight to those regions will enable more growth and development in the Nigerian music industry.

All the Nigerian regions have produced some major players in the industry yet they are left out in conversation, I will highlight some factors that can aid decentralization of the Nigerian music industry below;

The need for Nigerian music industry to look beyond Lagos in Nigeria

Tiwa Savage

Expansion of music festivals to other regions

Music festivals are a relatively recent addition to the independent arts festival scene in Nigeria and account for 15% of all festivals in the country.

Why Nigerian music industry needs to look beyond Lagos in Nigeria

Based on the international popularity Nigerian musicians have, the music festivals are able to adopt a commercial model offering a variety of revenue streams which include entry tickets, concessions, merchandise, advertising, VVIP tables and hospitality areas.

Rema

Music-led festivals are able to attract significant government and corporate support because of their ability to draw audiences in the thousands and generate high levels of local, regional and international media exposure.

Extension of Record Label

The fastest and easiest method to blow as an upcoming artist in Nigeria is to sign a record label deal with popular and successful music records.

There is a need for a renowned record label to extend to other regions, in other words having YBNL, Mavins, DMW, Kennis music, etc in other regions will serve a long way in decentralizing the Nigerian music industry.

Phyno

The Media

The media plays important role in centralization, there isn’t much debate about it, they focus only on the mainstream, extending or engulfing other regions will channel the spotlight to other regions as well, from radios, TV channels, magazines, and other media outlets.

Flavour

Show Promoters/Organisers

show promoters can also play important roles in billing and allocating big stage concerts regularly to other regions, it will bring the spotlight and other investors around the region.

Apart from Phyno and flavour, no other artists play a major concert outside Lagos, or any show promoters hosting one.

These are the top 10 states in Nigeria that produce the best musician according to the number of mainstream artists they produce in the space of popular music.

Nigeria is officially the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is a country in West Africa, and here are the top 10 states in Nigeria that produce the best musician.

It is the most populous country in Africa and in Sub-Saharan Africa before South Africa, Kenya, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Ethiopia; geographically situated between the Sahel to the north, and the Gulf of Guinea to the south in the Atlantic Ocean; covering an area of 923,769 kilometers (574,003 mi), with a population of over 211 million.

Nigeria Flag

Opinion

First and foremost, to be able to analyze the top 10 states in Nigeria that produce the best music, it has to be regionalized and refined by the number of mainstream artists in the Nigerian music industry produced by the state.

Shout out to another genre of traditional music and instrumentation, but then, this post revolves around mainstream contemporaries.

So! which region in Nigeria produces the best musicians? I’m from the Southeast, and as much as I love our beloved Chief Osita Osadebe, I have to say those Yoruba artists have been giving everyone else a run for their money for way too long

If we’re talking of contemporary Naija music in genres like hip-hop, rap, and R&B, it is an understatement to say the Southwest part of Naija top the chart of quality musical artists but, to be more precise, the Middle-belt region with states like Benue, Plateau, Nassarawa and the FCT, in particular, are also inclusive, Southeast holds very tight too.

In summary, Nigerians are great talented people!

Nigeria’s music industry has grown to the point that needs expansivity to include other geographical regions.

Lagos is considered the hub of African music, where artistry goes mainstream, in fact not only art but almost everything along the lines of Nigeria.

Why Nigerian music industry need to be decentralised

Also regarded as the highest level of everything, the media, money, the biggest concerts happen in Lagos, so are the opportunities for growth.

In a summary, it is the headquarters of Nigeria’s entertainment, Nigeria’s version of US Hollywood.

While New York City/Long Island is regarded as the regional scenes that have received international attention in the US, many cities abroad also have vibrant local Hip Hop cultures as well.

Some Nigerian artistes dwelling in certain geographical proximity are being marginalized and Unaccordingly rated in the Nigerian music industry, but then I’d let it slide to avoid misconception in the context.

This is drawing us to the point of the topic in the conversation, its high time the industry decentralized to include other regions in the standard music conversation

All the Nigerian regions have produced some major players in the industry yet they are left out in conversation, I will highlight some factors that can aid decentralization of the Nigerian music industry below;

Extension of Record Label

There is a need for a renowned record label to extend to other regions, in other words having YBNL, Mavins, DMW, Kennis music etc in other regions will serve a long way in decentralising the Nigerian music industry.

The Media

The media plays important role in centralisation, there isn’t much debate about it, they focus only on the mainstream, extending or engulfing other regions will channel the spotlight to other regions as well, from radios, TV channels, magazines and other media outlet.

Show Promoters/Organisers

show promoters can also play important roles in billing and allocating big stage concerts regularly to other regions, it will bring the spotlight and other investors around the region.

Apart from Phyno, no other artistes play a major concert outside Lagos.

Like it or not, Rema is here to stay. All the signs indicate that and depending on what deal he has with his label, Jonzing World and Mavins.

He’s got at least five years of being in the mainstream, even if things don’t pan out, the way we think they will. But that’s even the worst-case scenario. Now, let’s talk about the best.

It’s easy to sound like someone else, so much easy. Skales sounds like Wande Coal, Joe EL sounds like 2baba, Terri is a Reekado Banks soundalike. Oh, there’s more. Lyta can vibe like Mayorkun, Sean Tizzle used to sound like Davido, T Classic sounds like Kizz Daniel, Fireboy DML sounds like Adekunle Gold and so on. But it’s just one thing to sound like an already popular artist, it’s another to actually exhibit the potential of that artist. Rema doesn’t only sound like Wizkid, he’s also demonstrated that he’s got what it takes, to stand on the best day.

Rema

If Rema goes on to win the Next Rated award at The Headies, this year, he’d have won the same major award Wizkid won. Only eight years after. That’s kind of the point, Wizkid has been here for so long. Long enough we can start scouting for guys who can also give the industry joy like he did in the past. Guys we can hold against a bar, guys we can actually criticize and assess, without sounding bitter. And for many years, we’ve been waiting for that someone, that young kid that will pop up with a shine like Wizkid’s, maybe bigger and disturb the industry.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B3ZkUybJY9R/

If we consider what he’s been up to, lately, Rema seems like that guy that could make Africa proud, while making the fans happy. He’s talented, for sure, but a million other artists also are. So, it apparently takes more than talent to become what Wizkid has become, it takes some ‘extra’ which includes a platform on which to deliver, a huge budget, consistency. Guess good looks and fashion won’t hurt, too. Rema’s got it all!

Months ago, when he first hit us, he had a hit single, “Dumebi” and a whole lot of Instagram freestyles. Our guess then would have been said, a trapper who’s got vibes. No one would quickly have considered him suitable for the Afrobeats thingy, not really. He didn’t seem like a good fit. But another thing that made Wizkid what he is today is constant evolution. His sounds just evolve. That did happen to Rema, when all of a sudden we had “Iron Man.” He dropped a short EP, “Freestyle”, much like a distraction and a pointer to what’s coming next. Then there was his part on “All Is In Order.”

Wizkid

“Iron Man” was the first time Rema got the Wiz comparison, and that early, it sounded like a disrespect to the Starboy name. But, now, after the “Bad Commando” EP project and the Headies nomination, it’s all starting to make sense. Okay, what if this guy isn’t (because he can never be) competition to the Starboy? What if he’s just more like the new guy, the next generation is gonna love like Wizkid? Now, that makes sense.

Most of his fans are still kids in their teens, and the rave is much. He’s not a street artist and Twitter may not understand, but he’s the perfect celebrity for the TikTok and Snapchat babies. He sounds promising, he sounds like the future of Afrobeats. Plus, he’s a fine boy!

Music is about sounds, how good the artist is with sounds, how he can tweak his voice to make melodious sounds. Usually we can’t really control how we sound, in reality. But what of in the booth, can another artist intentionally try to sound like some other artist? The short answer, yes.

The long one? Be my guest.

Maybe it is influence or just coincidence, but arts just tend to be copies of other arts that came before it. And that includes musical pieces, too. What makes it unique though, is how broad influences can be. Wizkid will definitely cite Fela as a big inspiration to his music, but he doesn’t really even sound like Fela.

That’s primarily because his art has been influenced by other people other than the afrobeat legend. Including Banky W, who mentored him for years. So, all those influences, with a few 2Baba there, a few Naeto C there, makes him have a unique sound.

In 2014, thereabout, I heard of a guy named Joe EL, for the first time. He sounded exactly like 2baba, you’d probably think they’re related. Not that it mattered, but he was bald, too, I guess. Kennis signed him, a rational thought was, as a replacement to 2baba, who had left the label.

That scenario, like many others in the past turned out to be an interesting coincidence. Or so we were made to believe.

But, in recent times, it seems kind of a good thing to have the same style as a celebrity, cause it almost certainly means you’re one step ahead of others trying to achieve success, in this over-crowded industry. Everybody can sing about girls, but not all can re-work their lyrics and voice to sound like Wizkid. So, it’s definitely a selling point.

Rema

Rema, a new kid on the block is getting all of the rave (a little troll, too) because his music makes him sound like he intentionally wants to sound like the pop star, Wizkid. Picking words only Wiz would use, and singing inaudibly, would definitely make us think you want to sound like the Starboy. Let’s say, it has paid off for him.

Fireboy DML

What about Fireboy DML? He had quite a number of songs, on the YBNL Mafia album. Some were pop elements, some were just dancehall, but “I’ll Be Fine” quickly became ultra-visible. Why? Fans thought he reminded them of what Adekunle Gold would do. Right. There were so many people who would do inspirational stuffs, in this industry, but Adekunle had a unique pattern. The same pattern fans now saw in Fireboy DML. Again, it was like Olamide wanted to brew a new and latest and more trendy version of the “Ire” singer.

LYTA too, at first got all those Mayorkun comparisons. People think it’s ridiculous because Mayorkun will always be a bigger act than the kid, but it is not ridiculous. He did sound like Mayorkun.

Are you starting to think perhaps it’s not just coincidence, after all? Maybe it’s really for clout. I don’t blame them, or anybody. Trend or no trend, the question remains, who wants another version of their favourite artist, who is actually just on vacation and is still coming back hotter ?
