Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher outlined the Reds’ deficiencies and said why he does not think the team will win the league title this year.

Luis Diaz’s last-minute heroics lifted Liverpool out of a 1-1 draw with Luton Town in the Premier League on Sunday, sparing his team’s blushes.

Former Liverpool player Carragher concluded that the squad is still not good enough to contend for the Premier League championship this season after reviewing the team’s performance against the Minnows. In addition, he offered the recruiters some guidance that may benefit the team in the upcoming months.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher said: “What Liverpool have had in the last 18 months, they’re a lot better at it this season, they’re still not as good as Manchester City at stopping counter-attacks.

“People always think about Liverpool pressing from the front, but Liverpool are a team who dominate possession, have a lot of the ball. They’re not quite as good as City in possession so there are more turnovers when they lose the ball. Opponents seem to find spaces a lot more to get in behind and attack Liverpool. Luton didn’t have the quality to really punish them except for the goal that we saw.”

While the club signed Alexis Mac Allister during the summer, the former Reds star believes they still need one more holding midfielder in their team to bolster the squad, adding: “Liverpool in midfield are a lot improved than we saw last season but they still haven’t got a top holding midfield player. Mac Allister’s not a holding midfield player. He’s good on the ball in terms of receiving but defensively he finds it really tough and lacks a bit of pace for that position, so I still think they can improve there.”

He also urged the club to sign a backup for Trent Alexander-Arnold, which will allow Jurgen Klopp to use the English international in multiple positions.

He added, “I think in the back four Liverpool could do with not so much a player for a specific position but almost just a great defender who can play a couple of positions. They went with [Joe] Gomez today at left-back instead of [Kostas] Tsimikas, they thought he’d be stronger defensively. I still think Liverpool could do with another player in that position, probably on the other side at right-back and maybe release Trent at different times maybe into midfield, against certain opposition you play someone there who’s maybe stronger and tougher defensively.

“I think Liverpool are not ready to win the league, I think Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool supporters know that right now. They want to get back in the top four but in terms of challenging again I think they need another midfield player and a top-class defender.”

The next Europa League matchup for Klopp’s team is against Toulouse on Thursday.

The Frenchman was kept quiet the whole game as Bayern romped to a comfortable 2-0 triumph and a 3-0 victory overall. Messi, the Frenchman’s attack partner, was nearly struck by a fan after the final whistle.

Carragher thinks Mbappe’s best chance of winning the coveted Champions League medal is at a different club as his quest for one continues.

“You can lose to Bayern Munich, of course you can, a big name was always going to go out,” the pundit told CBS Sports after the match. “But to be involved how long they’ve had Qatari ownership, state ownership, more money than anyone else in the world, buying the best players… to go out five times in the last 16 is a joke. It really is.

“There’s a lot of criticism at times for Liverpool’s ownership, they need someone with more money, they need the Qataris to come in. It doesn’t mean anything if there’s no expertise with what you’re doing. I’ve said before about Kylian Mbappe, he’s got to leave. They’re nowhere near winning the Champions League, I don’t think it’s going to get better next season if that squad stays. I just think the quicker he’s at Real Madrid the better.”

“I’m delighted PSG have gone out,” the former Liverpool defender added. “I just don’t like the whole set-up, everything about it. It’s not a team, they’re just a mess. Five years out of seven they’ve gone out at the last 16. They spend more money than anyone, they’ve got the best players in the world. It just tells you how important it is to be a team. Virgil van Dijk of Liverpool has dismissed criticism of new Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez, believing that despite his lack of height, he has demonstrated what a good player he is.

The Argentine international joined United from Ajax in a £57 million deal over the summer, but he got off to the worst possible start, losing back-to-back games against Brighton and Brentford.

In both games, Martinez – who is 5ft 9in – was criticised for struggling to deal with the height & power of Danny Welbeck and Ivan Toney, with some pundits suggesting the player’s stature would not work in the Premier League.

Van Dijk, who remains the Premier League’s standard for centre-backs, saw Martinez up close when the Red Devils beat Liverpool this season and seem unconcerned about how excellent he is, responding to criticism.

Asked about Martinez and the backlash he faced so far this season, Van Dijk told The Overlap: ‘The height difference is something everyone wants [to make something of]. You shouldn’t even mention it.

‘Obviously it can help if you’re a bit taller, but also it can not help you in certain ways

‘So I think he did fantastic against us. He is a good signing for United. Very passionate, good on the ball, so I can only speak positively about him. I’ve got respect for what he’s achieved so far and hopefully he’ll be doing well for United – but not getting [too] successful!’

Probed further on whether he disliked how Martinez was attacked by pundits, Van Dijk added: ‘I think in England everyone has to say something about everyone. That’s just it. But that’s fine, you can’t change that.

‘But he’s shown already many good performances, and he shouldn’t even think about all this other stuff.’

Van Dijk also named Olivier Giroud as the ‘bogeyman’ striker he has had the most trouble against, saying: ‘He was the striker I’ve struggled against the most. I always felt like I had him, but somehow, he always managed to score against us.

‘Whether it was for Arsenal, Chelsea or France, he always scored. The year we won the Premier League in the 2019/20 season, we beat Chelsea 5-2. We were winning 3-0 and he scored a scrappy goal, and I thought to myself, “We’re winning comfortably, but he’s still scoring against me!”’

Carragher, writing for the Daily Telegraph, cannot compute how City could have taken umbrage with Klopp’s assessment of the financial advantage they enjoy.

He wrote: ‘To equate what City and Paris Saint-Germain have done – and what Newcastle United intend to do – with what is possible for other clubs is an insult to everyone’s intelligence, no matter how much ‘net spend’ or salary figures are twisted. Three clubs stand apart because they are backed by sovereign wealth which means there is no prospect of their cash reserves running out.

‘City will always be in running when the next Haaland is on the market. If for some reason their signing of the Norwegian did not work, they would use their resources to sign another striker next summer, continuing to invest to protect their status. Long-term, the stakes are not as high for them when compared to the majority who know if they get it wrong it may take years to rebuild.

‘That is why clubs embarking on a slow and steady build – like Liverpool and Arsenal – are hailed as a more realistic and sustainable template for everyone else. Liverpool cannot afford to buy another £85 million striker next summer if the Darwin Nunez deal fails.’

Carragher also accused City of paranoia and revealed he was declined the opportunity to speak with Silva ahead of his departure from the club after a decade of lighting up the Premier League.

He added: ‘Since working in the media, I have experienced City’s paranoia.

‘Over the years I have used my platform on Sky Sports and in this column to show my respect for City managers and players. As recently as last week I wrote De Bruyne could be the Premier League’s greatest midfielder and said Haaland terrifies defenders.

‘Prior to David Silva’s City departure, I wrote how he was one of my favourite ever Premier League players. I wanted to interview Silva before he left English football, well aware of City’s belief that their rivals receive more favourable media coverage.

‘When told of my request, City’s response was they would grant no such interview to me because ‘I wear red pom poms’. Every ex-player in the media wants their team to win but no other club has reacted to me in this way.’

Rio Ferdinand and Jamie Carragher got into a Twitter argument after the Liverpool legend called the former United player a “Cristiano Ronaldo fan boy.”

The argument broke out after Carragher claimed Erik ten Hag was correct to sit Ronaldo during Sunday’s 6-3 loss for United to Man City.

The 37-year-old remained on the bench at the Etihad, with the Dutchman admitting afterwards that he didn’t bring Ronaldo on in the second half out of ‘respect’ for his career, due to the scoreline.

Carragher has been a critic of Ronaldo and said from the outset of his return to Old Trafford that United were wrong to bring him back.

“The top teams who go on to notoriously win titles very rarely do what maybe Manchester United teams did in the past and almost wait for the second half of the season,’ 

“I think those days have gone. I think if you go back to [Jose] Mourinho at Chelsea where it was like, “right we’re out the blocks”, and United learnt at the time that they had to go with them.

“[Manchester] City are the same and that’s why it’s a big worry for Liverpool where they find themselves right now because once you let top teams get away from you it’s very difficult to claw them back.”
