‘Better’ Lyrics by Jaido P

Told them all I’ll be fine
But I’ve been crying in silence
See nobody helping when I tell my problems
They be telling me some common lies
Kept on telling me lies
Tell me who gave them license
If you no fit help me

Shallipopi, an aspiring Afrobeats rapper, has been named the next featured artist in Apple Music’s Up Next artist development program in Nigeria.

Shallipopi was born and bred in Nigeria’s Benin City, Edo State, and his ascension has been nothing short of exquisite, with his raw ability and identifiable slang spawning his viral song ‘Elon Musk‘.

His hit song, “Elon Musk,” gave rise to the slang name “Pluto Boy,” which is now affectionately referred to by his followers as “Plutomanian citizens.”

Following the release of a number of standout singles showcasing his range, such as the groove-based “Gra Gra” (2021) and the lyrically astute “Power” (2022), it was Shallipopi’s “Elon Musk” (2023) and the subsequent “Elon Musk Remix” with Nigerian superstar rapper, Zlatan, that catapulted him to enormous viral success, which was further enhanced by his alluring persona on TikTok.

Shallipopi will be on Apple Music’s Nigeria’s Up Next playlist as the newest Up Next act to be featured in Nigeria. The genre-neutral playlist features a collection of musicians that our global editors are keen to introduce to a wider audience.

As part of Apple Music’s expanding lineup of Up Next Artists from Nigeria, Shallipopi joins Winny, Pawzz, Novemba, Ogranya, Majeeed, Khaid, Ninety, Young Jonn, T.I. Blaze, Browny Pondis, Ajebo Hustlers, Jaido P, Wavy The Creator, and SGaWD.

When it comes to the artists who are helping in giving upcoming acts a platform whether by features or signing to a label, Olamide is one name you can mention.

His generosity has gone beyond signing artists to his label to just featuring in their songs and their music videos.

This in a way has done a lot of the artists involved as having a superstar such as Olamide on your song is already a guarantee that it would be successful.

• RELATED: Reasons why Olamide deserves more respect
• RELATED: How Olamide is helping to shape the future of Nigerian music

Here are some of the artists Olamide has aided to limelight without signing them to his label

Phyno

The indigenous rapper was already a producer who had worked with artists such as Illbliss and was signed to Capital Dreams Records.

However, he made his mainstream debut as a rapper with Ghost Mode, a song on which he collaborated with Olamide Badoo, they would go on to be one of the best collaborators in the Nigerian music scene.

The two are one of the few friends in the music Industry dropping countless hits together such as Fada Fada, Ladi, Onyeoma, and others.

Ycee

Ycee, who was signed to Tinny Entertainment rapper at that time, had released his popular song Jagaban in 2015

However, the song did not go on to become a major smash until he recorded a remix with Olamide, which propelled him to mainstream popularity in Nigeria and elevated him to stardom status.

Zlatan

The Zanku crooner earned his big break in 2017 when he featured Olamide on his hit song “My Body.” The song was a smash hit that even drew the notice of Davido, who made it even bigger by dancing to it on his Instagram page.

Bella Shmurda

This bright young act initially released his new single Vision 2020, for which he made a tiny video and shared on his Instagram story.

The video caught the attention of Poco Lee, who introduced him to Olamide, resulting in a remix of the song that became a popular success in 2019.

Jaido P

Jaido P, a fast-rising talent in Nigeria’s music industry, is another beneficiary of Olamide’s assistance to up-and-coming artists.

During a period when fans were expecting something from Baddo, he tweeted a tiny snippet of Jaido P’s street-related song “Tesinapot,” in which he was featured.

This song was a huge boost for Jaido P’s music career, as it has gained a lot of plays and streams on various sites.

The two reconnected for another hit titled “Survive” in 2021.

When it was finally released, the song began acquiring thousands of streams and has become of hits on the streets. With the title even becoming a trending slang.

However, Olamide’s influence on Portable’s life didn’t end there as he was instrumental in helping the upcoming singer make amends with his management after a drama that ensued over the rights of the song.

The Nigerian-birthed street hop subculture has come a long way since it was created some 6 years ago through a blend of indigenous rap and Afropop and here in 2021 the top 10 Nigerian street hop musicians that shook the industry

This blend is one largely credited to being pioneered by indigenous rap veteran, Olamide. Back then, it was a musical affair characterized by beats faster than the already up-tempo pop songs Nigerians danced to.

Top 10 Nigerian street hop musicians that shook the industry in 2021

Naira Marley

Azeez Adeshina Fashola, known professionally as Naira Marley, is a British-Nigerian singer and songwriter.

He is known as the president of his controversial fan base, “Marlians”

Zlatan Ibile

Omoniyi Temidayo Raphael  known professionally as Zlatan Ibile, is a Nigerian rapper, singer, songwriter, musician, and dancer. From Ijurin Ekiti, Ijero local government area, Ekiti state

He is the CEO and founder of Zanku records.

In 2014, he won the Airtel-sponsored One Mic talent show held in 2014, Abeokuta, Ogun State

Bella Shmurda

Like a prophetic singer, the big break for Akinbiyi Abiola Ahmed or Bella Shmurda, came following the Olamide-bearing remix to his Vision 2020 single.

From that moment on, he’d gone from being another student musician in Nigeria to being the street-hop singing voice of his generation after his friend Poco Lee, a dancer and street hop personality, had connected him with the Nigerian rap icon.

Bella Shmurda, like a man on a mission, then released his debut project, High Tension to critical acclaim

Zinoleesky

Before June 2019, Zinoleesky, full name Azeez Oniyide, had been an Instagram sensation who thrilled his fans and viewers with short clips where he freestyled acapella in his style which is fresh, soulful approach to Fuji music.

His status changed later that year following the favorable release of his Zlatan-featured single, Money, that catapulted into a street music favorite, blared from speakers and barbershops in popular slum areas all over Lagos.

He then got signed by Naira Marley to his Marlian Music record label which has been responsible for pushing out his debut EP Chrome Eccentric, with the hit single, Kilofeshe.

Mohbad

Christmas in the pandemic-riven 2020 was a different and marginally less festive affair from what we’ve all come to know but Mohbad and Rexxie’s KPK was one of the December jams that helped retain that air of festivity during the season.

That is however not Ilerioluwa Dimeji Aloba or Mohbad’s only hit as, before that, he’d given the streets an anthem with Naira Marley and Lil Kesh on Ponmo Sweet, and is currently running the airwaves with his profound storytelling on Sorry and vibrant delivery on Jafafa.

Seyi Vibes

While the Bariga-bred Seyi Vibez born Oluwaseyi Balogun is yet to have a mainstream hit single to his name, the singer is a fan-favorite on the streets of Lagos where the core elements of street-hop are birthed. p0;\

This love for his vivid and moving storytelling laced over mostly trap-influenced instrumentals has translated to the artiste who has referenced his humble beginnings as the son of a plumber, getting at least 6 million streams each on Audiomack on his more popular songs such as Pay Day, God Sent and Catalyst. With other records averaging 2 million streams.

Candy Bleakz

In 2020, a Nigerian prestigious record label and home to some of our favorite rappers, Chocolate City, bought into the street hop scene by not only signing a rising act from the scene but a female pink-haired rapper, Candy Bleakz full name Akiode Blessing.\\

Self-described as ‘Ladies Dragon’ her alias is an uncontested one as her fire bars and energetic flow on records like her recent Baba Nla with Teni, her standout track Owo Osu with Naira Marley and Zlatan, as well as her street-banging Kelegbe, have proved.

Balloranking

Away from the fast-paced side of street-hop music that gives focus to themes of young, wild, and free-living, exists a pensive and deeply prayerful side, with the singer lifting their voice up to God with requests for wealth and long life.

For Balogun Olamilekan or Balloranking, the son of a welder, whose voice is one that conveys depth from the moment he states his name, this is the sort of song he’s dedicatedly created.

With singles like Never Die Poor to Never Stop Trying and recently, Holiday— which is an evocative tune currently circulating playlists in corners of Lagos, the street-hop musician continues to steadily mark his vocal imprint on the corridors of the genre.

Jaido P

Sometime in 2020, Jaido P’s Olamide-featured Tesina Pot hit the airwaves with all the potential that banger tracks come with.

It had served as his breakout single, introducing the airwaves to one of the many sounds of Taiwo Olajide or Jaido P whose style ranges from Afro-pop to rap, with street-hop serving as the platter on which he presents these sides. Since then he’s put out another club-banger record, Brokoto, and is set to put out his debut project, Shopla which already has a single titled Survive with Olamide, out.

We are spotlighting the rising Nigerian Artists Who Are Reinventing the Street Hop Sound.

Since its inception years ago as a hybrid of indigenous rap and Afropop, the Nigerian-born street hop subculture has come a long way. Olamide, an indigenous rap veteran, is largely credited with popularizing this sound.

It was a musical affair back then, with beats that were quicker than the already fast-paced pop tunes that Nigerians were dancing to.

Tempos and sonics vary these days, but the lines remain their hard-hitting, a cheekily written character that is refreshingly gritty and raw as it touches on the singer’s hardships as a part of the disadvantaged society or as a young Nigerian.

As a result, street hop songs sometimes fused with Amapiano, trap music elements, RnB, dancehall, and even hip-hop have recently dominated the Nigerian airwaves, all with fascinating storytelling and seamless Lamba in check.

The creative and dare-devil crop of musicians who make up Nigeria’s new-age of street-hop has steadily propagated and brought about this transition. As a result of this expansion, street-hop has started to approach the great heights that Nigerian pop music continues to achieve.

• RELATED: Top 10 Naija street songs that dominated 2020
• RELATED: From Buju to Omah Lay, the New School Acts dominating the Industry

As a result, we’ve endeavoured to highlight 10 new-age street hop artists in Nigeria who are changing the sound with this list;

Bella Shmurda

Following the Olamide-assisted remix to his “Vision 2020” hit, Akinbiyi Abiola Ahmed a.k.a Bella Shmurda got his big break, much like a prophetic singer.

Bella has gone from being just another Nigerian student musician to being the generation’s street-hop vocal voice.

Bella Shmurda then released his debut album, High Tension, to mainstream popularity.

While his tremendous growth is the stuff of dreams, it was only possible thanks to his ability to capture the strength and struggles of young Nigerians through his lyrics, vocal range, layered on a revamped version of the popular Fuji sound from the 1980s alongside his decadent self-aware mentality.

Since then, Bella Shmurda has continued to outperform himself, from heavyweight collaborations with Runtown, Davido, Masterkraft, and others, to hit singles like Rush and World.

His dedication landed him a slot as a nominee for the coveted title of Next Rated artist at the Headies Award show.

Zinoleesky

Zinoleesky, real name Azeez Oniyide, was an Instagram phenomenon before June 2019 who wowed his fans and viewers with short clips of him freestyling acapella in his style, which is a fresh, soulful take on Fuji music.

Later that year, his fortunes shifted after the successful release of his Zlatan-featured single, Money, which became a street music hit, blasting from speakers and barbershops in prominent slum neighbourhoods around Lagos.

Naira Marley then signed him to his Marlian Music record label, under which he released his debut EP Chrome Eccentric, which included the smash tune ‘Kilofeshe‘. All of these qualified him for the Rookie of the Year award at the 2020 Headies.

Mohbad

Mohbad and the Rexxie-produced KPK was one of the December jams that helped keep the spirit of the season alive during Christmas in the pandemic-ravaged year 2020 which was a little less festive than we’re used to.

However, it was not Mohbad’s first hit; prior to that, he had given the streets an anthem alongside Naira Marley and Lil Kesh on “Ponmo“, Fabian Blu’s “Instagram” and is currently ruling the airwaves with his insightful storytelling on “Sorry” and vivid delivery on “Jafafa“.

Jamopyper

While Jamopyper’s full name remains a mystery, it is undeniable that the Nigerian musician is one of the voices propelling street-hop to new heights.

He was nominated for the Headies Rookie of the Year award earlier this year, and he delighted his fans with a rousing performance of his breakout song with Mayorkun, If No Be You, proving that he hadn’t just happened to be there by chance.

‘Jamopyper of Lagos,’ as he is known, has earned an increasing reputation as one of the new school tastemakers of the scene, with his enticing melodies laced with hip hop elements, as evidenced by his recent track Better Better.

Bad Boy Timz

Bad Boy Timz is another talented act that has established a hold on the music industry. He started out with skits and freestyles for which he received nods from industry giants (including J Hus ) caught the eye of the record label and early in 2019, he signed a deal with Anonymous Music.

He began his Anonymous Music career with the track “Check and Balance” which garnered positive feedback, and it has only been better since then. He released his self-titled EP “TIMZ” in August of 2019, which has received over 10 million listens across all platforms.

In 2020, he catapulted his career to new heights with the global success of his hit single “MJ,” which received over 5 million streams in its first month. He wasn’t satisfied, so he collaborated with Mayorkun on a remix of ‘MJ.’

Jaido P

In 2020, Jaido P introduced himself officially with his Olamide-featured Tesina Pot which hit the airwaves with all the potential that banger tracks come with.

It was his breakthrough track, presenting the world to one of Taiwo Olajide’s or Jaido P’s many sounds, which span from Afro-pop to rap, with street-hop serving as the palette on which he showcases these sides.

Since then, he’s released another club banger, Brokoto, and is getting ready to release his debut album, Shopla, which already has a single out called Survive featuring Olamide.

Candy Bleakz

Chocolate City, a prominent Nigerian record label and home to some of our favourite rappers, entered the street hip hop scene in 2020 by signing Candy Bleakz, a female pink-haired rapper with the stage name Akiode Blessing.

Her alias, “Ladies Dragon,” is undisputed, as evidenced by her fire bars and energetic flow on recordings such as her latest Baba Nla with Teni, her outstanding tune Owo Osu with Naira Marley and Zlatan, and her street-banging Kelegbe.

Seyi Vibez

While Seyi Vibez who was born in Bariga, has yet to have a mainstream hit record, he is a fan favourite on the streets of Lagos, where the essential ingredients of street-hop were developed.

This appreciation for his evocative and moving storytelling laced over mostly trap-influenced instrumentals has converted to the artiste, who has mentioned his humble beginnings as the son of a plumber, receiving at least 6 million streams on Audiomack from his more popular songs such as ‘Pay Day‘, ‘God Sent‘, and ‘Catalyst‘.

Other records have averaged 2 million streams. Indeed, he is an artist to keep an eye on due to his consistent growth and abilities.
