After joining Manchester City for £100 million in the summer of 2021, Grealish had a challenging transition. The England international has now stated that Guardiola consistently starting him in crucial games last season helped him feel “loved” at the club, which greatly enhanced his confidence.

Speaking on Manchester City’s podcast, Grealish said, “I’m a big confidence player, I want to feel loved. I came back from the World Cup and my first game was against Leeds and I should have scored at least two goals in the first half and at half-time, I was dwelling on that. But in the second half, I made two assists for Erling. A week later, I was on the bench at Chelsea, as me and Riyad [Mahrez] came on at the same time and I got another assist for his goal. I was feeling the love of Pep – not because he’d said so, but because he was playing me in all those big games. ‘It’s okay the manager going; ‘You’re so important to the team, Jack’ – then not picking you. Then you’d think; ‘Yeah, you’re just saying that’. Pep didn’t say anything at all, but he picked me for the big games, and that said everything.”

The 28-year-old winger played 50 games for the Cityzens last season in all competitions, contributing 11 assists and five goals. Grealish is presently out due to a thigh injury.

“In my head I thought I was going to the team sitting top of the league and I was going to get so many goals and assists and obviously it isn’t the case. A lot of teams tend to sit in against us and that wasn’t the case at Villa. Dean Smith would tell me to go and find the weak link in the defence, whether that was on the right, the middle or whether I wanted to hug the touchline – and at Villa, I always had an overlapping full-back.

“I came into City, having been at Villa my whole life, and I’ve never had to change. I’ve always been used to that. I didn’t realise how hard it is to adapt to a different team and manager.”

In his debut year at the Etihad, Grealish started 22 games for City, and under Guardiola, he has once more been a regular rotation player. Grealish has participated in 11 of the 17 games they have played so far in 2022–2023, only starting eight of them.

Grealish can consider himself unlucky not to have scored himself. The English attacker attempted six shots in total, three of which Kamil Grabara, the in-form goalkeeper for Copenhagen, saved.

He was content with his performance, though, and he acknowledged that he is beginning to feel optimistic about his form for Pep Guardiola’s team once more. In his word:

“I am loving it at the moment. My last three or four games I have loved it and feel back to myself and playing with that freedom and confidence and it would probably help if I got on the scoresheet tonight, I was desperate in that second half but it is all about enjoying it and winning and we are doing that at the moment.

“Do you know what, when the luck just isn’t with you? I am going through one of those patches at the moment, but like I said, I am enjoying it at the moment and playing a lot of games recently and thankful to the manager for that.
