Nigerian superstar Davido recently celebrated his appearance as a featured guest on ABC News. In the interview, he was labeled the ‘King of Afrobeats,’ and the conversation revolved around his journey to achieving this status.

Davido shared a video of the interview, during which he discussed his growth over the years in the music industry and how he became known as the King of Afrobeats.

The DMW boss noted that while his lifestyle reflects Western culture, about 80 percent of his music is immersed in African culture.

He mentioned that during his upbringing in Atlanta, he enjoyed listening to artists like Ludacris, Ja Rule, and Nelly, who influenced his style. Davido added that his interest in African music began to develop when he was around 14 years old.

Sharing the clip, Davido wrote, “Seeing the way Afrobeats have changed the world and the impact we’ve had in music is beautiful!

To see how respected and cherished our culture has become makes me so proud. Let’s make sure we protect it and keep building a borderless music world 🌎 ⏳ @abcnews”

Lil Wayne believes he should be ranked first on Billboard and Vibe’s lists of the 50 Greatest Rappers of All Time.

Lil Wayne sat down for a live interview on Thursday’s episode of The Zane Lowe Show on Apple Music.

Weezy spoke for an hour about his upcoming album, Tha Carter VI, his new single, “Kant Nobody,” which Swizz Beatz produced, and his career as a whole.

The hip-hop scene has taken notice of one particular tidbit, meanwhile, in which Lil Wayne appears to be upset with his recent placement on the list of the 50 Greatest Rappers of All Time compiled by Billboard and Vibe and released earlier this month.

Although Lil Wayne is ranked among the top 10 rappers on the list, the legendary rapper from New Orleans adamantly stated that he is not satisfied with anything less than being the best rapper of all time.

In fact, Weezy went so far as to claim that even the most accomplished rappers “knew” that the “Right Above It” MC is the greatest in the industry.

“Man, who the hell is before me?” said Lil Wayne when asked about Billboard and Vibe’s list.

“Was the list including ALL hip hop? Like, before and after as well? I can deal with that. I will tell you that I am a motherfucking one. Everybody whose names you named, they also know I’m number one. Go ask ’em. They know what it is.”

Wayne’s belief that he is the supreme G.O.A.T. of the rap game comes after he was placed No. 7 on the list, trailing The Notorious B.I.G., Eminem, Tupac Shakur, Nas, Kendrick Lamar, and Jay Z, who is ranked first.

Lil Wayne is far from the only seasoned rapper that is dissatisfied with Billboard and Vibe’s rankings.

Early in February, only one day after the list was out, Ja Rule responded in a way that was consistent with someone who takes their profession seriously, especially in light of the fact that Ja was actually excluded from the rankings entirely.

“There ain’t 50 rappers dead, alive or waiting to be born better than me,” tweeted Ja Rule on Feb. 9. “@billboard congrats to everyone on the list well deserved but check my resume… #ICONN #Vibes.”

DMX who was born in Mount Vernon, New York began rapping in the early 1990s and released his debut album “It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot” in 1998, to both critical acclaim and commercial success, selling 251,000 copies within its first week of release.

The Rapper had a career that was both prolific and controversial, but generally, DMX was a legendary rapper whose style of music earned him a large following.

Here are a few things you should know about DMX:

DMX had a rough childhood

DMX was the first and only child of Arnett Simmons and Joe Barker. He had a half-sister, Bonita, but after DMX was abandoned by his father as a baby, he and Arnett were forced to live in a home for single mothers, while Bonita was taken care of by his aunt.

Growing up, DMX life at home wasn’t easy. He came from a troubled home, which resulted in him leaving his mother when he was a young boy. He spent a great deal of time living in group homes and surviving on the streets via robbery.

How he got into music and his name

DMX got into music as a young teenager when Ready Ron, another young rapper, who was impressed with Simmons’ beatboxing skill, asked him to become his partner.

The two produced a lot of music together and made names for themselves in the underground hip-hop scene.

However, this relationship with Ready Ron was also what led him to his lifelong struggle with addiction to crack cocaine.

Simmons chose the name “DMX”, which came from an instrument he had used at the boys’ home, the Oberheim DMX drum machine. It later was also interpreted as “Dark Man X”.

DMX wanted to be a Firefighter

Although DMX made a name for himself as a talented hip-hop artist, he didn’t always want to be a musician. In an interview with Talib Kweli on People’s Party that he wanted to be a firefighter when he was a little boy.

The rapper had bronchial asthma and used to suffer asthma attacks as a child, causing firefighters to be called in to help calm him down.

He stated he liked firefighters in particular because they were just there to “save your life,” adding, “They’re not concerned with what other crimes may or may not be happening or anything of that nature.” Unfortunately, his Asthma didn’t allow his Firefighter dream to come true.

DMX also wanted to become a pastor

DMX wanted to be a pastor and became a certified deacon. He first indicated his interest when he gave an interview while in prison in 2009.

In an interview with Fox 10 News at the time, he revealed that being a pastor was his “true calling in life” and that being in prison helped him “[actualize his] true calling.”

When DMX was asked what he was going to do when he left prison, he said he wanted to “give [his] first sermon in a church.”

“That’s gonna be like incredible for me and I hope it’ll be incredible for the congregation of that church,” he said. “I hope I’m able to reach somebody you know and touch somebody and bring them closer to the Lord.” He also had plans to release a gospel album.

The “Ruff Ryder Anthem” crooner is survived by 15 children.

DMX was married once and had four children with his former wife, Tashera Simmons. They got divorced in 2012. He also had an additional 11 children from several different women, taking the total amount of kids DMX had to 15.

DMX welcomed his 15th child, a boy named Exodus Simmons, with girlfriend Desiree Lindstrom, in 2016.

Here are also other notable facts about him;

• He once belonged to the same musical group with fellow rapper JAY Z and Ja Rule before they split in the 1990s.
• DMX has also pivoted into acting alongside his music. He was featured in films such as Belly, Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds, Cradle 2 the Grave, and Last Hour. In 2006, he starred in the reality television series DMX: Soul of a Man.
• In 2003, he published a book of his memoirs entitled, E.A.R.L.: The Autobiography of DMX.
• In 1986, DMX was first sent to prison after he stole a dog from a junkyard. He was sent to prison again in 1988 for carjacking and was later moved to a higher security prison after attempting to extort a fellow inmate for drugs.

According to GQ, the rapper had actually been arrested “some 30 times.” His charges were a wide variety which included drug possession, robbery, animal cruelty, probation violation, and driving without a license.

Unfortunately, X’s troubles with the law “grew simultaneously” along with his career. The more popular he got, the more the law seemed to come after him.

• He was the first artist to debut an album at No. 1 five times in a row on the Billboard 200 charts and has sold over 74 million records worldwide.

• The rapper had a life-long connection with and affection for dogs. In an interview, he admitted that he loves Dogs better than he does humans.

In comes The LOX, a group comprised of Yonkers’ Jadakiss, Styles P, and Sleek Louch, who were signed to Bad Boy before jumping ship Ruff Ryders in 2000. How’s It Goin’ Down (It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot, 1998)

For an entire generation of hip-hop fans, nothing will be as instantly transportive to the summer of 1998 than the fat bass and smooth electric keys hitting on the intro to “How’s It Goin’ Down. It was released as the fourth single from his debut studio album, It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot. The song features R&B singer Faith Evans.

The song would go on to be a modest hit, peaking at #70 on the Billboard Hot 100!

 Go to Sleep (Eminem featuring DMX and Obie Trice) (2003)

Beef is a part of hip-hop, so Eminem tagged in DMX and labelmate Obie Trice for a triple-team attack on Ja Rule and fellow rapper Benzino, who infuriated Eminem by calling him “2003 Vanilla Ice”.

The rapper encourages Slim Shady as he tells Ja Rule to “die nameless” on one of Eminem’s greatest diss tracks.

Ruff Ryders’ Anthem

Ruff Ryders Anthem’ should be the first song you think of when you hear the name DMX. This adrenaline-fuelled ‘It’s Dark And Hell Is Hot’ track takes you back to the golden age of MTV, a time defined by highly produced, strobing ’00s music videos such as the one that accompanies this classic. Surprisingly, X originally didn’t rate the Swizz Beats-produced track, dismissing it as “rock’n’roll” and insisting “it’s not hood enough”.

What’s My Name (1999)

Before “Party Up” became the breakthrough hit from DMX’s blockbuster 1999 album …And Then There Was X, it was preceded by lead single “What’s My Name,” an absolutely ferocious chest-thump that followed a dominant run to mainstream hip-hop’s mountaintop in the late ‘90s.

The single peaked at #67 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S and was produced by Self and co-produced by Irv Gotti.

 

X Gon’ Give It To Ya (Cradle 2 the Grave, 2003)

This is the quintessential DMX anthem. As a matter of fact, everybody knows who X is and what he’s going to do. As the lead single on the Cradle 2 the Grave soundtrack, DMX delivers his signature bark and to-the-point bars. The song saw a major resurgence in 2016 when it was featured in Marvel’s Deadpool.

Who We Be (The Great Depression, 2001)

This is a song about relentless struggle, with each new obstacle faced by underpaid people of color replacing the one that preceded it before the listener can fully process the tension.

With his flow transformed into a list of the issues beating down upon his community every day, DMX tries to both represent the voiceless and explain the systemic conflict to the millions buying his albums that had been shielded from it.
