Afrobeat singer and outspoken social critic Seun Kuti has once again launched a scathing attack on Nigeria’s political establishment, accusing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of deliberately hindering political progress and branding the country’s politicians as extremists consumed by religion.

During a recent Instagram Live session, the youngest son of late Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti expressed frustration over the electoral body’s failure to reopen its voter registration portal since 2019. According to Kuti, this ongoing delay serves as a tool to disenfranchise Nigerian youths and block the emergence of alternative political voices.

“Brothers and sisters, since 2019, INEC has not opened any registration portal. Instead, they register people up and down. INEC has refused to open the portal. They don’t want Nigerians to grow politically,” he lamented.

He further criticized Nigeria’s lopsided political space, which he believes is entirely dominated by ultra-conservative figures, with no room for progressive or leftist ideologies to flourish.

“With the three political systems that are there, INEC cannot change anything. We need more political voices. Nigeria has no left. Nigeria is full of conservative right-wing politicians. We have right-wing fascist politicians only,” Kuti said.

"Since 2019, INEC hasn't opened any registration portal…"

– Seun Kuti pic.twitter.com/CpbiD1Skq7

— @𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗷𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗯𝗼𝘆 (@OneJoblessBoy) June 4, 2025

The activist didn’t mince words as he took aim at the country’s ruling class, accusing them of fanaticism and violence. He cited the volatile political climate in Rivers State as an example of what he described as authoritarian rule under the guise of democracy.

“Mad people that would kill people! I mean, look at Rivers State. That’s a fascist way of governance. That is a right-wing government style. ‘My way on the highway’ – they start killing people, shooting certain states, and bringing military administration,” he stated.

Condemning the religious fervor that, according to him, blinds political leaders from rational governance, Kuti said:
“All our politicians are religious nutjobs. All of them, religion don scatter their brains. Rivers State is the symbol of right-wing fascism in Africa. INEC has brought us into right-wing fascist politics. They are all right-wing. Right, totally right-wing. None of them are Pan-Africanists.”

Seun Kuti, who has long used his platform to challenge Nigeria’s political status quo, remains one of the most vocal critics of the government and its institutions. His latest outburst continues a legacy of bold political commentary that echoes the revolutionary spirit of his father, Fela.

According to Google’s top search trends, a riveting fusion of politics, popular culture, and curiosity swept across the Nigerian digital landscape in the first quarter of 2023.

Political intrigue reached a fever pitch as Nigeria’s general elections unfolded, captivating the nation’s attention. Held on February 25th, these pivotal elections determined the president, vice president, members of the Senate and House of Representatives, as well as state governors in 31 out of 36 Nigerian states.

Among the most searched individuals, Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate, captured the top spot, outpacing even Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the president-elect of Nigeria. Atiku Abubakar, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, claimed the fifth position.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) emerged as the most searched entity between January and March, with Peter Obi and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) closely following. The CBN’s currency redesign prior to the elections undoubtedly contributed to its prominence.

In the realm of music, homegrown talent took center stage as Nigerians avidly sought out the latest tunes. Spyro’s infectious hit, ‘Who is your guy?’ claimed the top spot, with Ruger’s ‘Asiwaju’ and ‘Carry me go’ by Boy Spyce and Khaid securing second and third places, respectively.

The nation’s collective curiosity was also evident in the top trending questions, which ranged from ‘When is Easter 2023?’ and ‘When is WAEC 2023 starting?’ to ‘How to check my polling unit?’ and ‘Who is the President of Nigeria?’. Unsurprisingly, the popularity of Spyro’s song sparked the question, ‘Who is your guy?’, further showcasing Nigeria’s deep-rooted love for the tune.

Nigerian rapper, Ladipo Eso, popularly known as Ladipoe, has reacted to INEC’s announcement of Bola Tinubu as Nigeria’s president-elect.

Like many others, the Mavin rapper expressed his thoughts on the outcomes of the recently held presidential election in Nigeria.

Bola Tinubu of the All Progressive People’s Congress was declared the winner of the 2023 presidential election by the Independent National Electoral Commission in the early hours of March 1, 2023, an announcement that was regarded by many as questionable due to the numerous instances of vote-rigging in various states.

In response, Poe shared a video showing Tinubu and his supporters celebrating after INEC chairman Mahmood Yakubu declared them the winner of the election.

The award-winning rapper used a ‘zipped-mouth’ emoji to suggest that the election was rigged and wrote:

A fan has raised doubts as to why Burna Boy’s warning to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) did not affect the result of the presidential election.

Recall, Mp3bullet.ng reported that the Afcian Giant had issued a warning to INEC to allow the will of the people to prevail.

He urged the electoral commission to respect the choice of the electorates who turned out in large numbers to vote in the presidential and National Assembly elections on February 25 during the compilation of results.

Burna Boy advised INEC to resist being an instrument for rigging or manipulating the 2023 election.

He issued the warning via his social media page after being called out by Nigerians who expected him and his colleagues to lend their voice to the demand for free and fair elections.

Burna said; “Let Nigeria decide o! @inecnigeria. No try any result magic”.

The INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, declared the APC candidate the election’s victor notwithstanding his remarks and the protests of the opposition candidates.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday at the Unity Fountain in Abuja, The singer made the call.

The singer, speaking in response to a gathering of some youths at the Unity Fountain, stated that the gathering was intended to protest the allegedly phoney election results issued by the Independent National Election Commission (INEC).

According to him, we cannot afford to be seen as overreacting because we know how the enemies will use that against us, so we need to use our heads.

Oputa was pleased with the behaviour of Nigerian youths during the voting process.

The peaceful walk’s organiser, Mr. Isaac Balami, stated that the demonstration was in response to INEC’s announcement of the 2023 presidential election results.

By failing to fulfill its pledges, he said INEC had violated the political parties’ peace agreement and the code of conduct.

Balami credited the high voter participation nationwide to INEC’s assurances that the election would be transparent and that people’s ballots would be counted.

He said that when INEC realized the APC was losing the election, the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS) ceased functioning.

According to Balami, the lack of joy in the APC victory across the country indicates that the election outcome did not represent the people’s decision.

Veteran singer Bukola Elemide, professionally known as Asa has reacted to reports of violence and tribalism that took place during the presidential and national assembly elections in some communities of Lagos State.

The numerous reports of attacks on voters have gotten people questioning the credibility of INEC’s results.

There have been claims that thugs messed with the actual election on February 25 2023, by destroying ballots and even seizing people’s phones to prevent them from recording.

Remember that there have been several internet comments that are tribal and discriminatory during the voting process. Some internet posts also made the assertion that some voters had experienced physical assault at various polling locations.

A video of a man openly telling people to leave if they don’t plan to vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) was also put online, and it went viral.

The singer said that her vote yesterday was calm in response to the countless depressing stories that are currently dominating the media. Nonetheless, Asa emphasized that she is grieved as a result of the assaults in Lagos. Tribalism is awful, she added.
