Veteran Nigerian music executive Olumide Ogunade, popularly known as ID Cabasa, has weighed in on the long-standing belief that age automatically equals wisdom, and he’s not buying into it.

ID Cabasa Shares Bold Take on Age and Maturity

Speaking on a recent episode of The Clarity Zone podcast, the 50-year-old producer challenged the popular notion that growing older naturally makes a person wiser. According to him, that assumption has never been entirely accurate.

“The assumption that the older you get, the wiser you are is an assumption that has never been true. I am not saying older people are not smart or wise.

“But most times, people see themselves as wiser because they are more experienced not competent. But most of the experiences that you are bringing, a lot of them are obsolete,” he said.

Cabasa explained that while experience can be valuable, it doesn’t always translate to relevance or competence, especially in a rapidly evolving world. In his view, growth is the real determining factor.

“If you are growing as a person, there is a tendency that as you get older, you are going to be wiser. But that isn’t the case if you are not growing but just aging.

“We are dealing with a generation that came with computer OS but you learned how to use computer. So, we need to be careful not to demand for respect only on the basis of age.”

Clarifying his stance, Cabasa stressed that he was not dismissing the intelligence of older people. Instead, he urged a shift in mindset, one that measures wisdom by continuous learning, adaptability, and competence, rather than simply the number of years lived.

His comments have since sparked conversation online, especially among younger creatives navigating industries where tradition and innovation often collide.

The result is Unfinished Business, his third studio album, a 13-track journey that feels like stepping into a time capsule and finding the contents glowing brighter than you remember.

ID Cabasa Brings Back the Classics on “Unfinished Business” Album

For many Nigerians, ID Cabasa isn’t just a producer; he’s part of the country’s musical DNA. As the mastermind behind Coded Tunes, he helped shape the sound that birthed giants like Olamide, 9ice, and Reminisce.

Those mid-2000s years were the foundation of modern Afrobeats, and with Unfinished Business, Cabasa pulls from that era, “reimagining” his beloved hits with original voices and today’s brightest stars. He’s not simply dropping an album; he’s curating a moving, breathing museum of Nigerian music history.

At the heart of the project is “Photocopy Reimagined,” a reunion that feels almost cinematic. Hearing 9ice step back onto one of the most important records of his career, now dressed in a 2025 production glow, is goosebump material.

Vector joins him, weaving a verse that respects the original’s message of authenticity while flexing the layered wordplay he’s known for. Cabasa keeps the song’s gritty percussive spirit intact, but everything is sharpened, polished, and tuned for modern speakers. It feels like the “Alapomeji” spirit walked into the future and found its rhythm waiting.

Then there’s “Olufunmi Reimagined,” the track that feels like Cabasa threw a class reunion and a talent show into the same room. Styl-Plus’ iconic ballad is reborn through a powerhouse lineup: BOJ, Joeboy, Fireboy DML, and Odumodublvck.

The contrast is delicious, with Odumodu’s gritty, drill-tinted delivery bouncing off Joeboy’s softness, Fireboy’s emotional depth, and BOJ’s smooth Alté resonance. It shouldn’t work, but it does. Cabasa’s production gives each artist air to breathe, proving just how adaptable his sonic blueprint is.

But perhaps the clearest statement of the album’s purpose comes on “Bere Mi,” where Zlatan and T.I Blaze bring the street-hop energy of today onto a foundation built over a decade ago.

Cabasa uses the collaboration to make a quiet but powerful point: the new wave didn’t appear out of thin air; it grew from roots he helped plant. The album becomes both a reminder and a revelation, linking the past with the present through drums, melodies, and memory.

What makes Unfinished Business shine isn’t just nostalgia. It’s Cabasa’s understanding of his role. He’s not just flipping old records for sentiment; he’s orchestrating experiences. Every feature feels intentional. Every update feels like a respectful dialogue between eras.

The album is warm, cohesive, and carefully crafted the kind of project that makes older fans smile knowingly while giving younger listeners a front-row seat to a history lesson disguised as a playlist.

In the end, Unfinished Business proves a simple truth: great music never really fades. It only waits for the right moment and the right hands to be reintroduced. And for Cabasa, “unfinished” doesn’t mean incomplete. It means the story is far from over.

After years of anticipation and quiet hints, veteran producer Olumide Ogunade, famously known as ID Cabasa, is finally ready to open the vault. This Friday, December 5, 2025, he will unveil Unfinished Business, an album many consider a long-overdue return from one of Afrobeats’ most important architects.

For weeks, whispers about the project have stirred excitement across the industry. And rightly so. Cabasa isn’t just releasing an album; he’s stepping back into the spotlight with a lineup powerful enough to bridge generations.

Long before Afrobeats became the global wave it is today, ID Cabasa helped shape its early blueprint. Through his iconic Coded Tunes label, he nurtured the careers of Olamide, 9ice, Reminisce, and others who would eventually become pillars of modern Nigerian music.

Now, with Unfinished Business, he revisits that legacy but with the energy and voices of a new era riding beside him.

The 12-track project reads like a celebration of Afrobeats’ past, present, and future. Cabasa pulls in some of today’s biggest hit-makers — Olamide, Zlatan, Fireboy DML, Bella Shmurda, Joeboy, Darkoo, Pheelz, Boj, Odumodublvck, and more.

But he doesn’t stop there. He reaches into the archives, dusts off classics, and rebuilds them with fresh faces. “Photocopy” returns with the combined brilliance of Vector and 9ice, while the timeless “Olufunmi” is reborn through Boj and Joeboy.

Cabasa describes the idea as something deeper than nostalgia a way to remind older fans where the sound started while handing younger listeners a refreshed doorway into Nigeria’s musical heritage.

Before music took over his life, Cabasa briefly flirted with a career in economics and banking.

But destiny clearly had other plans. His signature production style a fusion of local melodies, street influences, and modern rhythm made him one of the early masterminds behind the Afrobeats explosion. His fingerprints are still present in the work of many top acts today.

Unfinished Business, released under Coded Tunes/Ziiki Media, carries the weight of both reflection and reinvention. And for many, it is more than an album it is another chapter in Cabasa’s long-standing contribution to defining the sound of a generation.

With nostalgia woven into innovation, this project is poised to be one of Afrobeats’ defining releases of the year a reminder that legends never truly leave; they simply return when the music needs them most.

Veteran Nigerian music producer ID Cabasa has revealed that while he has worked with many of the artists he once dreamed of producing, Burna Boy remains the one act he still hopes to collaborate with.

In a recent interview on Hip TV, the legendary hitmaker reflected on his decades-long journey in the music industry, naming stars like 9ice, Olamide, and Reminisce as some of the standout artists he’s proud to have worked with. But when asked if there’s anyone left on his wishlist, Cabasa responded without hesitation:

“If there’s anybody I would still want to taste out of my music, it would be Burna.”

His admiration for the Grammy-winning singer underscores Burna Boy’s enduring influence across multiple generations of Nigerian music creatives.

Cabasa also hinted at another artist he enjoys musically but would likely never work with due to what he described as a “nuisance value.”

He declined to name the artist, though many fans speculate that he may have been referring to controversial street-hop act Portable, who is known more for his public antics than studio discipline.

“I like the sound of this particular artist, whom I won’t mention, but it’s his nuisance value I cannot deal with,” he remarked candidly.

As he looked back on his early influences, ID Cabasa credited music legends such as Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey, Alhaji Ayinde Barrister, and Chief Ayinla Kollington for shaping his musical ear. He also shared that his time growing up in the Anglican Church deeply nurtured his love for music.

On the production front, he cited Dr. Dre and Scott Storch as global inspirations while also recognising local legends Laolu Akins, Nelson Brown, and OJB Jezreel for impacting his craft.

Through his Coded Tunez imprint, Cabasa played a key role in launching and nurturing the careers of top Nigerian acts like Lord of Ajasa, 9ice, Reminisce, and Olamide—the latter of whom has gone on to become one of the most influential rappers in African music.

Looking ahead, Cabasa announced that he is working on a new project titled ‘Unfinished Business,’ an album that promises to breathe new life into classic Afrobeats records.

He explained that the project would be a reimagining of iconic Nigerian songs, in line with a growing trend that bridges the old and new sounds of Afrobeats.

“The album is more than just nostalgia. It’s a celebration of our roots with a fresh perspective,” he said.

With a storied past and exciting future ahead, ID Cabasa remains a pillar in the Nigerian music scene, blending heritage, innovation, and unrelenting passion for sound.

Veteran Nigerian music producer and label executive ID Cabasa has revealed that his upcoming album is driven by a passion to reinforce the identity and legacy of Afrobeats.

Speaking during an interview on Rubbing Minds, Cabasa disclosed that the idea for the project was birthed out of a deep reflection on the evolution and historical foundation of Afrobeats, which he feels is not adequately understood or preserved.

According to him, a conversation with rap star Olamide further validated his mission.
“Olamide mentioned that we should probably bring back some of the sounds that shaped the Afrobeats, and it resonated with what I was planning to do,” he said.

Cabasa added that their discussion helped expose a gap in the historical understanding of the genre:
“In a conversation with Olamide about Afrobeats and its identity, I found there is a lacuna around its history.”

The respected producer, who has played a pivotal role in shaping Nigerian pop music, emphasized that his motivation is rooted in cultural preservation and the need to educate both new artists and fans on the roots of Afrobeats.

To this end, he has embarked on a creative journey to reimagine iconic classics from the genre. Already, he has released fresh takes on beloved tracks like 9ice’s Photocopy and Styl Plus’ timeless hit Olufunmi.

Cabasa also weighed in on the recent controversial remarks by international singer Akon, who claimed to have “discovered” Wizkid and taken credit for Afrobeats’ global explosion during a chat with Sherri Shepherd.

Reacting to Akon’s statement, Cabasa acknowledged his contribution to Afrobeats’ global exposure but stressed that the genre had already gained substantial traction before Akon’s involvement.

“Akon played his part in aiding the exportation of Afrobeats,” he admitted, but added that its success was the result of the hard work and vision of several Nigerian pioneers over the years.

Furthermore, the music executive highlighted the importance of Nigerians remaining central to the Afrobeats narrative. He emphasized the need for intentional gatekeeping—particularly in how the genre is defined and represented globally.

“While the creative aspect of the music can’t be gatekept, Nigerians need to always be at the forefront of the conversation,” he asserted.

ID Cabasa’s upcoming album is expected to be a thoughtful blend of nostalgia and innovation, aimed at reminding listeners of the genre’s roots while paving the way for its future.

Veteran Nigerian music producer Olumide Ogunlade, professionally known as ID Cabasa, has voiced serious concerns over what he describes as a growing identity crisis in Afrobeats, fuelled by the increasing influence of Western music culture.

Appearing on Channels TV’s Rubbin’ Minds on Sunday, the hitmaker behind 9ice’s iconic track “Gongo Aso” lamented that the genre, once a vibrant representation of African sounds and stories, is at risk of being diluted in a bid to cater to foreign markets.

“There’s a good part to the diaspora effect. Many young Nigerian producers are learning new sounds and improving the quality of production,” Cabasa acknowledged. “But I’m worried about the identity we’re losing.”

He warned that the soundscape is shifting dramatically, with Afrobeats starting to resemble R&B rather than its original African-rooted form.

“The West is now sounding more like Afrobeats, while we’re sounding more like R&B. That’s the real concern. It’s scary. I almost think we’ve already lost part of it,” he said.

Cabasa, 49, also expressed unease over the rising number of Nigerian artists relocating abroad and operating primarily in foreign currencies, suggesting that this disconnect from the local culture could further erode the genre’s authenticity.

Driven by these concerns, the seasoned producer said he has taken it upon himself to reimagine classic Nigerian songs — a deliberate effort to preserve the musical heritage and reintroduce it to a younger audience.

“That’s why I keep doing what I’m doing — reimagining classics — to remind this new generation of artistes not to lose themselves. Don’t abandon who you are just to fit in,” he urged.

So far, Cabasa has reworked timeless hits such as Styl-Plus’s “Olufunmi” and 9ice’s “Photocopy,” bringing a fresh yet nostalgic spin to these classics.

He credited rapper Olamide for inspiring this creative direction, revealing that a conversation with the YBNL boss sparked his decision to preserve and promote foundational Afrobeats sounds.

“It all started from a conversation with Olamide. We were talking about how people abroad are trying to hijack the Afrobeats narrative — saying they named it, shaped it. That’s when Olamide said, ‘Maybe we should bring back the sounds that shaped this thing.’ That idea resonated with me,” Cabasa said.

He also praised contemporary artists like Tems, whose recent hit “Love Me Jeje” — a remake of Seyi Sodimu’s 1999 classic — serves as a powerful example of how sampling Nigerian music can bridge generations and keep cultural stories alive.

“Tems winning with ‘Love Me Jeje’ — that’s cultural. It’s storytelling. Sampling brings familiarity and emotional connection. Instead of sampling foreign music, why not revive our rich catalogue?” he asked.

Cabasa’s advocacy comes at a time when Afrobeats is enjoying unprecedented global attention. Yet, his call is clear: preserve the soul of the genre while embracing its future.

Veteran Nigerian music producer and industry executive Olumide Ogunade, widely known as ID Cabasa, has publicly challenged Akon’s recent assertion that he played a foundational role in creating Afrobeats.

Akon, the Senegalese-American singer and music mogul, made headlines after an interview on The Sherri Shepherd Show where he claimed to be instrumental in pushing Afrobeats to the global stage during the late 2000s.

According to him, his early partnerships with Nigerian artists and executives catalysed the genre’s international breakout.

He specifically mentioned signing Wizkid as the first Nigerian act under his label and collaborating with Banky W, suggesting that these moves were pivotal to the evolution of Afrobeats as we know it today.

However, in a recent conversation on Wazobia FM, ID Cabasa pushed back, questioning Akon’s narrative. He acknowledged that Akon did collaborate with Nigerian talents during the genre’s formative years but argued that this involvement doesn’t entitle him to claim authorship of the movement.

Cabasa emphasized that before Akon’s entry into the Nigerian music scene, homegrown stars like 2Face Idibia, 9ice, and Timaya were already making waves and laying the groundwork for what would become the Afrobeats explosion.

He also took issue with Akon’s remarks about Wizkid, countering the claim that Akon “groomed” the young artist. Cabasa clarified that it was Banky W who discovered Wizkid and signed him to Empire Mates Entertainment (EME), which later entered a collaborative partnership with Akon’s label—contrary to Akon’s claim of being the sole catalyst.

Speaking candidly in Pidgin English, ID Cabasa said, “If Akon wan talk say na him discover Afrobeats, e for still talk say na him find 2Face, Timaya, 9ice and all. Na people wey he meet for here tell am say dem big pass. So he just dey feel say na him pioneer Afrobeats business and branding.”

He concluded by stressing that Afrobeats wasn’t the product of any one individual. “Afrobeats no be one person work. E no be invention; na culture,” he said.

Legendary singer 9ice’s album, Gongo Aso, is still a classic after 17 years, standing as one of the defining sounds of that era.

Many people didn’t think that 9ice, the Nigerian music star, would have such a huge impact on Nigerian music when he released his album, Gongo Aso on March 15, 2008. Even though it’s been 17 years, this record is still a classic in the history of African music. Its sound and cultural significance make it timeless.

9ice

The record Gongo Aso is a big deal in both Nigerian music and 9ice’s career. The release of Gongo Aso was a welcome change. It came out at a time when Nigerian music was shifting from traditional Afrobeat to a more modern mix of hip-hop, highlife, and rap. The 14-track album became a classic right away, connecting with music fans of all ages as it captured the energy of the streets, the knowledge of the leaders, and the thrill of city life.

The main song, “Gongo Aso,” became an anthem and is one of the best songs on the record. It not only topped the charts in Nigeria, but its catchy tune and catchy sounds also got a lot of attention in other countries. The song undoubtedly gained popularity due to its constant play in bars, clubs,tv,radio and the streets. The lyrics of 9ice resonated deeply with fans, capturing the essence of business, partying, and the daily lives of young Nigerians. Rich and poor alike could relate to this song because it was about things they both wanted to achieve.

ID Cabasa was a big part of Gongo Aso’s success. He primarily produced most of the album’s songs and mixed traditional sounds with modern beats to make a unique sound that appealed to a wide audience.

The record also had relationships that stood out. Most of the songs showed off 9ice’s unique skills, but only two features on them. For the first song, “Street Credibility,” 9ice worked with the famous 2Baba (formerly known as 2Face Idibia). Their work together on the single added depth by mixing 2Baba’s signature musical flair with 9ice’s local style. The second relationship was with Fuji artist Pasuma. 9ice’s sound and Pasuma’s unique Fuji style went well together, making for a rich musical experience. His work on the song “Ati je lo’” was a wonderful mix of different types of Nigerian music. The only guest spots on the record were from these two projects. Because of this, 9ice was able to keep a strong sense of who they were while still being willing to work with others.

Other outstanding songs like “Photocopy,” “Party Rider,” and “Wedding day” proved that “Gongo Aso” was an album that could skilfully mix Afrobeat, hip-hop, and highlife. Gongo Aso was famous for more than just its catchy beats and sounds. It was also known for its deep lyrics. There was a mix of sexy lyrics and catchy tunes on 9ice‘s record that made it stand out. His storytelling skills shined a light on love, social problems, and the joy of Nigerian culture in songs like “Gongo Aso”, ‘Wedding day’ and “Photocopy.” His unique voice and unique way of speaking English and Yoruba together made the record seem more real, and it quickly became a favourite in Nigerian homes and cars.

In a song like “Ade Ori,” Nine talks about royalty and how a king can be recognised by his crown and fly whisk. At that age, he says he was the best in the singing business, and he thanks God for bringing him into it. The last track on the Gongo Aso record, “9ice Takes His Time to Praise God,” is a strong and thoughtful way to end the collection.

In addition to making a lot of money, the record received nine times as many awards and nominations, solidifying his place in the history of Nigerian music. The biggest change that Gongo Aso brought about was in the Nigerian music business, but its success also marked a big change in 9ice’s career. It marked the start of a new era for Afrobeats and showed that local artists could become famous around the world.

As it celebrates 17 years of success, Gongo Aso is still an important part of conversations about the history of Nigerian music. You can’t say enough good things about how it has changed artists now and in the future. The record is more than just a collection of songs; it’s a statement of musical genius and cultural pride because it boldly blends traditional and modern sounds and has had a huge impact on Nigerian pop culture.

At the end of the day, Gongo Aso is a wonderful example of what genuine, creative, and close-knit Nigerian music is all about. Even after 17 years, it’s still a powerful piece of music. Great music, like all real classics, gets better with age.

Originally composed by ID Cabasa, Bere Mi became a cultural staple, with rappers 2Phat and 9ice capturing the struggles and aspirations of the everyday Nigerian.

The track’s infectious rhythm and heartfelt storytelling made it an anthem of resilience. Now, with this revamped version, Zlatan’s high-energy delivery and T.I Blaze’s emotive lyricism add a fresh street-hop dynamic, bridging the gap between old-school classics and the modern Afrobeats scene.

Speaking about the project, ID Cabasa expressed his excitement: “Bere Mi struck a chord with so many when it first came out. Bringing Zlatan and T.I Blaze into this reimagination adds a fresh layer to its legacy while honoring what made it special. I can’t wait for longtime fans and new listeners alike to hear this fusion of eras—it’s a celebration of where we’ve been and where we’re going.”

Zlatan, known for his streetwise anthems, and T.I Blaze, who has quickly gained recognition for his soul-stirring melodies, elevate the track’s energy.

Legendary Nigerian music producer and label boss, ID Cabasa, has voiced concerns about the mental health crisis plaguing the Nigerian entertainment industry.

In a series of thought-provoking posts on his X (formerly Twitter) account, the renowned producer shared his perspective on the unaddressed trauma faced by many entertainers.

ID Cabasa, who has been instrumental in shaping the careers of several iconic Nigerian artists, emphasized the urgent need for trauma treatment in the country.

He lamented how entertainers often endure unresolved emotional wounds while being subjected to mockery and judgment instead of receiving the support they desperately need.

“We need to treat trauma more in Naija… A lot of people need closure. Unfortunately, when they speak up, rather than finding healing, *‘People pick side.’* We mock, blame, and judge people for things they need healing from,” he wrote.

The music producer further noted that when entertainers muster the courage to share their struggles, their vulnerability is frequently met with criticism, which only deepens their pain.

“The entertainment industry has many stars that need healing… But commentators deepen their pain by criticising them rather than showing empathy. So a lot is locked in to appear STRONG while dying internally. Even when they cry out for help, we gloss over it as entertainment.”

ID Cabasa’s remarks come in the wake of a recent online feud between musician Spyro and music executive Ubi Franklin. Spyro accused Franklin of owing him ₦10 million and detailed his harrowing experiences during a two-year stint under Paul Okoye’s One Africa Music Fest label.

In an emotional interview with ‘Echo Room,’ Spyro recounted the hardships he endured while signed to the label, shedding light on the challenges many Nigerian artists face behind the glitz and glamour of the industry.

ID Cabasa’s commentary serves as a reminder of the hidden battles faced by entertainers and the pressing need for empathy and mental health awareness in Nigeria’s entertainment ecosystem.

Veteran Nigerian record producer Olumide Ogunade, popularly known as ID Cabasa, has opened up about a “discovery” that made him change his approach to religion as a Christian.

Cabasa said he used to be “a very religious Christian” until he discovered the importance of discerning when God is speaking and when a man is speaking in the name of God in the Bible.

In a recent interview with Echo Room, he explained, “When you are reading the Bible, pay attention to the Jewish culture and pay attention to what God is saying. They are two different things.

“I used to be a very religious Christian until when I was about leaving the university, and I discovered that even the Bible that I am reading, I need to pay attention to when it is God that’s speaking and when it’s man that’s speaking in the name of God.”

Cabasa also shared his opinions on feminism and transgenderism. He said, “Where feminism started from is not where we are now, the meaning has changed. It was meant to fight for the rights [of women], but now it has gotten to the point that you see men behaving like women.

“This thing [transgenderism] is against humanity. It’s meant to stop you from reproducing.”

During the interview, ID Cabasa shared his views on the true purpose of marriage, expressing concern that its original intent has been forgotten in today’s society.

He emphasized that according to biblical teachings, marriage is not solely about personal happiness or emotions.

He stressed, “If I explain this thing, I pray people won’t misunderstand. This is what I practice… in the place of marriage, there is God, the man, the woman, and the kids.”

He further clarified, “Even in the creation of marriage, the purpose of marriage has unfortunately been lost. People need to hear me very well so I won’t be misquoted. I say that the purpose of marriage is not to give happiness or satisfy your feelings.”
