Afrobeat was originated in Ghana in the early 1920s Before Nigeria joined the wave in the late 1960s, pioneered by Fela Kuti who explored different fashionable music at the time, he was at the forefront of the genre, popularizing the style both within and outside Nigeria.

Afrobeat was pushed by Femi Kuti, Seun Kuti in the 90s, a bit of juju music led by I.K Dairo and J.O Araba even though it has been in existence pre-independence.

Thus, we have decided to share with you the Nigerian artistes whose parents are also musicians.

Truly, some of your favourites in the music industry weren’t only born with their talents, but also into the home of musicians who have helped and groomed them into becoming the shining star we all celebrate today.

Here, we state the artistes whose parents are or were musicians during their time.

Femi and Seun Anikulapo-Kuti

Fela, Femi, and Seun Anikulapo Kuti

Notably, almost everyone must have heard the name “Anikulapo-Kuti” before. Whether in a bar, street, park, wherever.

However, not everybody may be familiar with the lineage of the name and its impact on the music industry.

Well, the great man to promote that name is no other than the legendary Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

While addressing the originators of Afrobeats in Nigeria and the world at large, he is considered a founding father.

However, he did not only stop at making good music but also passing the gene to two of his children, Namely Femi Anikulapo Kuti, and Seun Anikulapo Kuti.

Both of them are part of Nigeria’s finest Afrobeat music makers we have today.

Likewise, to their record, they have released various albums and bagged nominations and awards, both locally and internationally.

As the saying goes, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, such is the case of this talented singer.

I am sure the name Sikiru Ayinde Barrister sounds familiar, well if it doesn’t I am sure this song “Reality” will help. However, he is the father of the fast-rising singer Barry Jhay.

No wonder, he has that fuji-like tune and a blend of Afro Juju, like his dad.

Additionally, punch reports he is also the grandson of I.K Dairo. However, we don’t know how the connection lies.

Prior to the contemporary music that dominates today’s world, there have been series of creative genres that promoted the Nigerian music industry, and as such we have decided to take a look at the top 6 Afro Juju musicians in Nigeria.

Tunde King

Tunde King was identified as the founder of Jùjú music in Nigeria.

He was born on the 24th of August, 1910 in Lagos Island.

He alongside a couple of his friends formed music named “Palm Wine” that combined Yoruba folk music with musical idioms from countries such as Brazil and Cuba.

On the other hand, Juju was a type of music that originated from the “Palm Wine” music.

Moreover, King groomed a lot of the popular Nigerian juju stars including Prince Adekunle.

Initially, the juju beat originated from when he got a tambourine, Tunde said.

From there, he started adding other musical instruments before turning them into a refined tune.

Born as Sunday Adeniyi on the 22nd of September 1946 in Oshogbo, to a royal Yoruba family.

Like every artiste, the roots of their talent and artistic prowess could always be traced back to their background.

Such is the case of our famous “Merciful God” singer, as his father was a church organist.

At a tender age, he displayed his love for musical instruments and was blessed with a melodious voice to compensate. In fact, it was under the disguise of coming to study at the University of Lagos, he left Ondo to Lagos to pursue his music career.

Having begun his music career with Victor Olaiya‘s highlife band, he came off pretty well.

After completing his time there, he went on to form his own band named The Green Spots, in 1967.

In particular, the evolution of his highlife style to Juju music was influenced by Tunde Nightingale.

As a matter of fact, he borrowed his stylistic elements from his ‘So wa mbe’ style of juju.

With his Afro genre of music, King Sunny became the first African to be nominated twice for a Grammy.

Also, he has released numerous tracks and albums of which the evergreen Syncro System stands.

Categorically, he is one artiste who has taken Nigerian music across borders.

Afrobeat generations is a group or set of afrobeat musical genre with a shared common characteristic, lets span through the highlight of the three Generations of afrobeat movement.

The characteristics thereof are based on Statistics (career records, achievements and impacts).

The three (3) notable generations of afrobeat are The Fela’s, The D’banj/2Baba/Psquare’s and The Wizkid/Davido/Burna Boy’s generations.

Each of the generations plays important role in the growth and globalization of the afrobeat movement, from the pioneer to the record-breaking new generations.

The Fela’s (1960s-1990s)
