The Recording Academy has announced a series of significant updates ahead of the 69th Grammy Awards, unveiling five brand-new categories alongside several revisions to voting procedures and eligibility requirements.

The changes, which will take effect for the 2027 edition of the prestigious awards ceremony scheduled for February 7, reflect the Academy’s efforts to better represent the evolving global music landscape and recognize a broader range of artistic contributions.

Five New Grammy Categories Added

Among the most notable developments is the introduction of five new award categories spanning multiple genres and regions.

The newly created categories are:

Best Asian Pop Music Performance – Recognising outstanding performances in Asian pop genres, including K-pop, J-pop, C-pop, and songs featuring one or more Asian languages.

Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance – Honouring exceptional collaborative performances within contemporary R&B music.

Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance – Celebrating excellence in traditional pop recordings distinct from modern mainstream pop.

Best Traditional Folk Album – Recognising outstanding traditional folk projects. As part of this change, the existing Best Folk Album category has been renamed Best Contemporary Folk Album.

Best Latin Song – Awarded to songwriters of newly written Latin songs featuring at least 51 percent Spanish-language lyrics.

According to Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr., the additions are designed to reflect the continued expansion and increasing diversity of the international music industry.

Major Voting Reforms Introduced

Beyond the new categories, the Academy has also approved several adjustments to its voting structure.

A new initiative known as Ballot Plus will allow eligible voting members with expertise across multiple genres to vote in up to 15 peer-related categories. This replaces the previous 10/3 voting model for qualified participants and is expected to provide broader representation across specialised music fields.

Best New Artist Eligibility Expanded

The Academy has also relaxed eligibility restrictions for the highly coveted Best New Artist category.

Artists can now be submitted a maximum of four times before becoming ineligible, an increase from the previous limit of three submissions.

Album Qualification Rules Updated

Another notable revision concerns album eligibility requirements.

Projects will now need to contain 66 percent newly recorded material to qualify, down from the previous 75 percent threshold. The adjustment is expected to accommodate a wider range of creative projects and release formats.

Digital-Only Releases Gain Recognition

In a move reflecting modern consumption habits, internet-exclusive releases will now be eligible for consideration in the Best Album Notes and Best Historical Album categories, provided they include the required supporting materials with their commercial download.

Greater Recognition for Songwriters and Composers

The Academy has also expanded recognition for songwriters and composers. Going forward, writers of newly created material on winning albums across most genre album categories will receive Grammy statuettes and achievement certificates, placing them alongside producers and engineers who have traditionally been recognised for their contributions.

The latest changes signal another step in the Grammys’ ongoing evolution as the organisation adapts to shifts in music creation, distribution, and global audience engagement. With new categories, broader eligibility standards, and increased recognition for creatives behind the scenes, the 2027 ceremony is set to be one of the most inclusive editions in the award show’s history.

The 69th annual Grammy Awards ceremony is scheduled to be held on February 7, 2027, at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

One of the biggest changes announced for the upcoming edition is the Grammys’ move to ABC — marking the first time since 1972 that the ceremony will air on the network.

The show will also be streamed on Disney+ and Hulu, signalling what the Recording Academy described as “a new home and a bold new chapter” for the awards.

For artists hoping to secure nominations, the eligibility window has now been confirmed. Only projects released between August 31, 2025, and August 28, 2026, will qualify for consideration at the 2027 Grammys.

Another major date to watch is November 16, 2026, when the official nominations will be announced. That reveal is expected to shape conversations across the global music industry, especially as Afrobeats, pop, hip-hop, R&B, and international categories continue to expand in global relevance.

Voting for the awards will happen in two phases. First-round voting is set for October 12 to October 22, 2026, allowing Recording Academy members to decide the final nominees across categories.

The final round of voting will then run from December 10, 2026, through January 7, 2027, before winners are announced live during the February ceremony.

As conversations from the awards ceremony continued to trend on social media, fresh data from X (formerly Twitter) showed that the Nigerian hitmaker was among the Top Mentioned Artists at the Grammys. Davido’s name featured prominently alongside global superstars such as Bad Bunny and Lady Gaga, underscoring just how much attention he commanded throughout the event.

While chart-topping records like “APT.” by ROSÉ and Bruno Mars dominated streaming conversations, Davido dominated the timeline. From his red-carpet appearance to his presence inside the Crypto.com Arena, fans and critics alike kept his name in circulation all night long.

Reacting in his signature laid-back style, the Unavailable crooner chose humour over hype. Taking to social media, Davido posted, “E FIMILE JARE KILODE!”

The Yoruba expression, loosely translated as “Please, leave me alone, what’s the issue?”, quickly caught on online. For many fans, the message perfectly captured Davido’s state of mind: calm, unbothered, and focused on peace rather than pressure.

The post has since gone viral, with members of the 30BG fanbase applauding his carefree attitude in the middle of intense global attention.

Many noted that even without a Grammy win, Davido still managed to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with international heavyweights, including Bad Bunny, who made history with the first Spanish-language Album of the Year win.

Once again, Davido proved that beyond awards, influence is measured by presence and at the 2026 Grammys, his presence was impossible to ignore.

On February 2, 2026, the DMW boss finally broke his silence after missing out on the Best African Music Performance award, marking his third Grammy nomination without a win.

The category was claimed by Tyla, whose hit song “Push 2 Start” off her album Tyla edged out other strong contenders, including Ayra Starr and Wizkid’s “Gimme Dat,” Burna Boy’s “Love,” Davido and Omah Lay’s “With You,” and Eddy Kenzo & Mehran Matin’s “Hope & Love.”

Davido attended the star-studded ceremony alongside his wife, Chioma Adeleke; his siblings, Sharon Adeleke and Adewale Adeleke; his manager, Asa Asika; his cousin, Tunji Adeleke, and other close associates, holding on to hope for a historic win.

However, after the ceremony, the singer shared a heartfelt moment with fans on Instagram, posting elegant photos with his family and revealing that he almost skipped the event altogether.

“I said baby listen we lost again let’s not go,” Davido wrote, referring to a private conversation with his wife. According to him, Chioma encouraged him to rise above disappointment, telling him, “Be humble in victory and gracious in defeat.” He ended the caption simply: “We outside.”

Afrobeats superstar Davido has finally spoken out following his loss at the 68th Grammy Awards, offering fans a rare glimpse into the emotions that followed the high-profile ceremony and explaining why he still chose to attend the event.

In what has become a moment of honesty mixed with quiet strength, the singer addressed the outcome of the 68th Annual Grammy Awards, where expectations were high but the coveted trophy slipped away.

Rather than dwell on disappointment, Davido turned the moment into a lesson on grace, leaning on the support of his wife, Chioma Rowland.

Taking to Instagram after the ceremony, the award-winning artist shared a set of elegant photos of himself and Chioma, both dressed in regal outfits befitting the global stage. While the images drew admiration, it was Davido’s heartfelt caption that truly resonated with fans.

The “Timeless” hitmaker revealed that he briefly considered boycotting the ceremony altogether after learning he would not be winning on the night. “I said baby listen we lost let’s not go,” Davido wrote, opening up about his initial reaction.

He then highlighted Chioma’s calming influence, quoting her words that quickly changed his mindset: “She said be humble in victory and gracious in defeat. We outside.”

The post quickly went viral, drawing an outpouring of praise from fans, members of the 30BG fanbase, and fellow musicians, many of whom applauded Chioma’s wisdom and Davido’s openness in sharing such a personal moment.

By choosing to attend the ceremony despite the loss, Davido once again underscored his role as one of Afrobeats’ leading figures on the global stage.

For many observers, the moment went beyond awards, serving as a reminder that celebrating African music and its growing influence sometimes matters more than individual trophies.

The Grammy ceremony took place on February 1, 2026, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California. It proved to be a tough night for Nigerian artists, as South African star Tyla clinched her second Grammy in the Best African Music Performance category.

Tyla’s hit record “Push 2 Start” from her album Tyla edged out stiff competition, including Ayra Starr and Wizkid’s “Gimme Dat,” Burna Boy’s “Love,” Davido and Omah Lay’s “With You,” and Eddy Kenzo and Mehran Matin’s “Hope & Love.”

Reacting to the loss, Teni, known for her comic personality and outspoken nature, took to her Instagram page on February 2, 2026, to vent her frustration humorously, particularly over Davido’s defeat. The singer has often spoken openly about how supportive Davido has been to her over the years.

In recent weeks, Teni made headlines after publicly begging Davido for his Lamborghini to use in a music video, a request he eventually granted. She also jokingly appealed to Grammy winner Burna Boy for his Ferrari, though that request is yet to receive a response.

Clearly amused yet exasperated by the Grammy outcome, Teni joked that had she attended the award ceremony, she might have ended up being arrested.

She also revealed that she is currently in Paris, France, for a show, adding that her manager had reminded her they needed money. With Davido and Burna Boy both losing out at the Grammys, she wondered aloud who would now come to her rescue.

She accompanied her video post with the caption:
“DEM DON ROB MY HELPER!!!!!!!! GRAMMY WHYYYYY!!!! 😫😫😫🥹🥹🥹😢😢😢😢😢😢😢.”

Teni’s reaction quickly caught the attention of fans online, many of whom praised her humour while echoing disappointment over Nigeria’s Grammy shutout on the night.

While addressing the audience on the night, the comedian made a sarcastic reference to Minaj’s perceived support for former U.S. President Donald Trump, joking that she could not attend the event because she was needed at the White House. The comment, though brief, appeared to strike a nerve with the rapper.

Shortly after the ceremony, Nicki Minaj took to her X (formerly Twitter) account, where she posted a series of explosive messages aimed at Trevor Noah. In her posts, she made several allegations, including claims about his sexuality.

She accused the comedian of refusing to “come out of the closet,” a phrase commonly used to describe someone who is believed to be hiding their sexual orientation.

In one of her posts, she wrote:
“Your favorite artist has been practicing rituals in a satanic cult where they take babies from other countries & mutilate & kill them as a form of a blood sacrifice to their God. You see, when your master is Satan, you must constantly shed blood. However, the JIG IS UP. Trevor refuses to come out the closet when everyone in the industry knows his boyfriend. Allegedly,” she wrote.

The comments have since sparked widespread reactions online, with fans and critics debating the appropriateness of Trevor Noah’s joke as well as the nature and tone of Nicki Minaj’s response. As of now, neither the Grammys nor Trevor Noah has publicly responded to her claims.

In a recent interview, Davido shared that the song wasn’t initially a favourite during internal listening sessions, and he even considered leaving it off the album entirely.

“Man, it’s so crazy because that song almost didn’t make the album. ‘With You’ was not in anybody’s top five,” he said.

He added, reflecting on the track’s unexpected success: “And now look at it go. Every time I was performing it, my heart would just start beating like, what if I didn’t put this song?”

Davido also recalled the moment he learned of the Grammy nomination, describing it as a surprise while he was in Dubai, just before his birthday. “I was in the car, actually, checking a car, and then my phone rang. They were like, ‘Oh yeah, another nomination.’ I was like, wow. Thank God,” he said.

Since its release, “With You” has become one of Davido’s most successful tracks, topping charts and surpassing 100 million streams on Spotify, in addition to earning a Grammy nod for Best African Music Performance. However, the award ultimately went to South African singer Tyla.

Looking ahead, Davido revealed that his focus is now on touring and releasing new music. The Nigerian star is confirmed to perform at Coachella 2026, becoming the only Nigerian artist on the festival’s lineup, with appearances on both Saturdays, April 11 and April 18, in Indio, California.

“Going back on tour, definitely more music. I’m about to do Coachella. Big plans,” he said, signaling that 2026 promises to be a busy year for the Afrobeats powerhouse.

Pop sensation Justin Bieber returned to the Grammy stage on Sunday night for the first time in four years, delivering a performance that had fans buzzing long after the lights dimmed.

With four nominations heading into the ceremony, Bieber took the spotlight with his hit track “YUKON.”

Justin Bieber Delivers Show-Stopping Performance At the 68th Grammy Awards

Supporting him in the audience was his wife, Hailey Bieber, beaming with pride as she watched the show unfold.

Bieber’s performance was strikingly minimalist yet bold. The singer appeared onstage wearing only a pair of shorts, playing the guitar, and delivering the song solo. The daring outfit quickly became a talking point, but it was his vocal prowess and stage presence that truly captured attention.

This marked Bieber’s first live Grammy performance since 2022, when he performed “Peaches” alongside Daniel Caesar and Giveon.

This year, he commanded the stage alone, effortlessly blending his signature vocal finesse with confidence and charisma.

Fans took to social media immediately, reacting with a mix of shock, admiration, and applause for Bieber’s unapologetic style. While the outfit made headlines, the performance itself reminded everyone why he remains one of pop music’s most formidable stars.

Love it or cringe it, Bieber’s appearance became one of the night’s most memorable moments, proving once again that he knows how to make a lasting impression on the world’s biggest stage.

The milestone came during a night where several artists aimed at the Trump administration’s immigration policies, blending music and advocacy on a global stage.

Bad Bunny also claimed the Best Global Music Performance award for his track EoO, prevailing over a diverse group of nominees including Ciro Hurtado, Angélique Kidjo, Yeisy Rojas, Shakti, and Anoushka Shankar. The accolade highlighted the song’s international appeal and Bad Bunny’s ever-evolving musical style.

The 31-year-old musician’s sixth studio album, Debí Tirar Mas Fotos, earned the night’s top honour, besting heavyweight competitors Lady Gaga and Kendrick Lamar.

The album, a deeply personal reflection on Puerto Rico’s musical heritage, showcased Bad Bunny’s ability to merge storytelling with cultural commentary.

In his acceptance speech, Bad Bunny dedicated the award to immigrants, paying tribute to those who “leave their home, land, their country, to follow their dreams.” His message resonated with the night’s broader themes of resilience and global solidarity.

However, Cubana Chief Priest did not hold back in the comments section, deriding Tyla with a sharp critique. Labelling her an “Industry Plantain 🍌,” he implied that her success was not entirely due to talent but rather the result of backing from influential figures within the Grammy setup.

The term “Industry Plantain” is a play on “Industry Plant,” suggesting that Tyla’s rise, despite now being a two-time Grammy winner, may have been aided by hidden industry support rather than purely organic recognition.

Cubana Chief Priest’s comments have since sparked online debates, with fans divided between defending Tyla’s accomplishments and echoing the nightlife impresario’s criticism.
