King of Queens is Yemi Alade’s debut studio album. It was released under the Effyzzie Music Group on 2 October 2014.

The album was produced by Selebobo, Sizzle Pro, Shady Bizniz, Philkeyz, Young D, GospelOnDeBeatz, DIL, OJB Jezreel, Mr Chidoo, Fliptyce, EL Mcee, and Beat Nation.

The album was preceded by three singles—”Johnny”, “Tangerine” and “Kissing”. It features guest appearances and skits from Bovi, R2Bees, Phyno, Chidinma, DIL, Selebobo, and Diamond Platnumz.

Johnny

Produced by Selebobo, “Johnny” was the song that properly introduced Yemi Alade to the Nigerian Music scene.

The song was a successful hit not just in Nigeria but also in Tanzania, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa, Liberia, Uganda, Zimbabwe, The United Kingdom, and others.

Kissing 

Kissing was the third official single released from the album. The song borrows lyrics from a popular schoolyard rhyme/playground song of the same name that is used in the USA and in the UK.

The groovy mid-tempo love song is produced by raved hit-maker Fliptyce with an enriching guitar by seasoned instrumentalist Fiokee, while Yemi armed with her honeyed voice sings about the beauty of enduring love.

Tangerine

Tangerine is also produced by Selebobo and features his vocals on the song. The song is a continuation of their collaboration on “Johnny”.

The upbeat song is Packed with infectious harmonies and melodies that have one dancing.

Taking Over Me ft Phyno

Taking Over Me features indigenous hip-hop heavyweight Phyno, he and Yemi go back and forth over an attraction that seems to pull them together despite their commitments.

It was produced by hit producer GospelOnDeBeatz.

Why

One of the underrated songs on the album, “Why” sees Yemi sing about unrequited love over a reggae/dancehall beat.

Sometimes last week,  Mp3bullet.ng reported that Winner of the Best World music album category at the Grammy Award teamed up with Nigerian Afro Pop Artist Yemi Alade to create a culture rich video for Yemi Alade’s 2019 release ‘Shekere’.

The duo paired to create the music video for  ‘Shekere’ not long after the Benin national picked the 2020 Grammy award for the best world music album ahead of Nigerian Songster, Burna Boy.

Taking Advantage of the spotlight on the Legendary Benin singer,Yemi Alade chose to release the music video for the hit track when conversation on how Kidjo beat Burno boy to scoop the  Grammy Awards was still very much alive.

Shekere which has a mixture of contemporary African style and a little bit of highlife adopted a mixture of Pidgin English and the Yoruba Language which is the native language of the South Western Nigerians.

The song  portrayed the beauty of African Culture in terms of dressing and tune, it  also did not disappoint in term of dancehall and rhythm as the new Jam will make anybody who loves dancing to ‘Shake body’.

Named after the tambourine-like instrument played in various regions of the continent,  both Alade and Kidjo deliver at their best on  the song’s string-filled production.

The upbeat song also includes interpolations of Kidjo’s 1996 classic “Wombo Lombo,” as noted in Pulse Nigeria.

The music video is a colorful celebration of the continent that opens with a shot of Maasai warriors. The Ovie Etseyatse-directed song sees the artists highlighting various African cultures through dance and dress.

Alade was   seen in various beaded looks and ankara prints, while Kidjo was captured wearing  an eye-catching Zulu headdress.

Dressed in full African attire, the dancers imitate steps from African traditional dance.

the duo were also are dressed in African attire and neck graced with pieces of jewelry, a beautiful view.

In terms of vocals and Sound quality, the duo did not disappoint as they are famous for having great vocals which they utilized in the song execution.

Legendary Angelique Kidjo

known for her song that featured in Lion’s king ‘we are one’  in 1998  and  her 1996 hit track ‘Wombolombo’ amongst other popular releases, Kidjo has been in the Grammy nomination as far back as 1995, but won her first Grammy award in 2007 in the best contemporary world music category.

Her Grammy fame did not just stop in 2011 as she was won the best world music album category in 2014 and 2015 respectively.

Multilingual Yemi Alade

Yemi Alade who gained prominence after winning the Peak talent show in 2009 disrupted the Nigeria music scene in 2015 when she dropped her popular single ‘Jhonny’ that aired on different Music channels.

Releasing her debut album in 2014, Alade collaborated with producers such as Selebobo, Sizzle Pro, Shady Bizniz, Philkeyz, Young D, GospelOnDeBeatz, DIL, OJB Jezreel, Mr Chidoo, Fliptyce, EL Mcee and Beat Nation.

The album was preceded by three singles: “Johnny”, “Tangerine” and “Kissing”. After her debut album release, the multi lingua artist has released two other albums; Mama Africa in 2016 and Woman of steels which featured  Shekere in 2019.

Is Shekere a ‘Remix’ to Kidjo’s 1996 ‘Wombolombo’?

It will interest you to know that the Benin Legendary artist had done used one of the major lines in Yemi Alade’s Shekere as far back as 1996 in her hit track wombolombo where she did not only .

Many feels that the 2019 release was in a bid to remake the song just like when 2face collaborated with PA Victor Uwaifo to remake Baby Jowo.

This might not be exactly a remake as it might only be an attempt by the Afro Pop singer to gain international relevance with the influence the Legendary Kidjo.

It is however  important to note that both songs did not only portray  the the beauty of African Culture in terms of dressing in the music video and tune.

it also adopted a mixture of Yoruba language,even  though pure English was used in the former,  the phrase ‘Wombolombo’ remained a constant word used in both tracks.

Can the track be said to be the remix to Kidjo’s 1996 wombolombo because of the phrase use and it’s its potrayal of the beauty of African Culture?

DMW’s Peruzzi is one of the hottest kids on the block, right now. I think that doesn’t call for any argument, in October 2018. The hot jams he’s serving, the collabos, the recognition, the Headies “Rookie of the Year” Award, earlier, this year, and every other thing, are pointers to the fact that Peruzzi is industry’s Next problem.

With songs like “Mata,” “For Your Pocket,” “Aza,” “Amaka,” the DMW collective “Mind,” “Aje” and the rest, we need not stress it, Peruzzi has found his way into the hearts of many music lovers in Nigeria, with his urban Afro vibe. What more do you need to be called a “star”?

In what is the first installation of our “Facts You Probably Don’t Know” series, here are seven things you (probably) don’t know about DMW’s cat, Peruzzi.

• IGBOTIC LASGIDI BOI

Yeah, Davido is from a Yoruba aristocratic family, and his involvement with people in the Industry has been somewhat around Yoruba guys. OBO even sings in Yoruba sometimes. And then, at a point DMW was filled with budding Yoruba guys. The Ibadan boy, Dremo, Mayorkun, also a Yoruba guy, there were Dammy Krane and Lola Rae talks at some point in time. They are Yoruba, too.

But guess what? Peruzzi ain’t Yoruba. He may have become a Lasgidi boy by naturalization, but then he’s Igbo. While we’re not sure where he’s from exactly, his name is Tobechukwu Victor Okoh, and, your guess is as good as mine.

• DROPPED OUT FROM MEDICAL SCHOOL

It’s not everyday we see guys who could have been doctors, breaking into the Industry. But, according to some of his interviews, Peruzzi dropped out of school, to pursue music.

He was a student of Odessa State Medical University, where he was supposed to be studying Medicine and Surgery. He dropped out, and the rest, as they say, is history.

• GHOSTWRITING FOR DAVIDO

Peruzzi was signed to Davido’s imprint in November, 2017. But In fact, records from various sources shows that he may have been with the DMW family as a ghostwriter, before the signing happened.

This year, when fresh war broke out between the camps of Peruzzi’s former label (Golden Boy Entertainment), Patrick Anyaele in some interview said Peruzzi wrote “FIA,” “Mind” and a couple DMW songs. And that got us thinking? FIA? Oh, maybe he wrote Aza? What of Aje? What of Assurance? You can never give me an assurance he didn’t write them. No wonder he’s always featured alongside Davido.

• JOINT VENTURE WITH FORMER LABEL

Peruzzi used to be signed to a certain label called Golden Boy, and that’s no news again. Then Davido came into the picture, and picked up the boy, signed him. There must have been some misunderstanding.

But then, it must have been settled too. So, next time you think Davido is taking all of Peruzzi’s money, know that there is also a Golden Boy. It’s a joint venture thing, for now.

• TOP NOTCH COLLABOS

OK, I know you know this. But it’s worth talking about. Honestly. Since Peruzzi came on the big scene, he’s been all over the place. He’s performed in the biggest cities, and most importantly, he is on some of the hottest songs on town. Wanna talk of the “Collabo of the Year” contender, “Amaka” with Legendary 2Baba or the Duncan Mighty-assisted “Aza,” or “Run Am” with Davido, produced by GospelOnDeBeatz. There is “Mind,” “Aje,” “Kilode” by Prime, the DMW “Twisted“, Ice Prince‘s latest, “Yawa” and the just released “4U” by DJ Ecool. Different tunes, that have one thing in common – the Peruzzi vibe!

• EP WITH DAVIDO

Part of what we’re expecting from the DMW camp is, a joint album from Davido and Peruzzi. Yes, that’s true. Not quite long ago, David took to his Twitter to ask “Who’s ready for that OBO X PERUZZI EP??” Well, we’re ready!

• ANGELO PERUZZI

The name Angelo Peruzzi, should strike a chord in your head if you’re a fan of Serie A football league. Angelo, is an Italian goalkeeper, who used to play for AS Roma, and is now a coach at Lazio.

That is to say, the “Mata” singer probably got his stage name from the keeper. You never can tell. But if it happens that’s not it, we’re still sure “Peruzzi” is an Italian name.

But then, who’s even more deserving of the recognition, Ceeza or Peruzzi?

Peruzzi is the OBO’s boy. These days, whereever Davido goes, Peruzzi follows, too (except the NYSC programme, of course.) Is Davido on Tour? If yes, Peruzzi’s on Tour, too. Did someone feature Davido? He probably featured Peruzzi, too. And that’s ’cause he was a songwriter for David, before he got signed officially to the DMW imprint, this year.

He’s new to the industry, yes. And although he doesn’t have a long list of songs that he owns, he’s been featured on many hits. There’s “Mind,” there’s “Aje,” and “Aza,” they’re all DMW collectives. “Aza” which is the most recent of all, features Duncan Mighty, by the way. He was also featured on 2Baba’s viral hit “Amaka,” one of his best guest appearances, till day. His “For Your Pocket,” single got its Davido remix, recently and he was on Percy‘s “Tatashe.” Not forgetting GospelOnDeBeatz’s “Run Am,” which features him and his boss, Davido. By all standards, Peruzzi deserves the Next Rated!

Ceeza Milli on the other hand, is not confirmed to be signed on Wizkid’s Starboy imprint, yet. But, Wizkid really put him on, this year. He was on Wizkid’s mega hit, “Soco,” and on “Commando,” another hit with Wiz. Duncan Mighty came through for him on “Sabi,” so the Starboy influence is there for him. And last year, Masterkraft had featured him on “Olohungbo,” where he shone alongside Tinny Entertainment rapper, Ycee and Chocolate City singer, Dice Ailes.

Unlike Peruzzi, though, Ceeza has songs of his own. “Rotate,” “There She Goes,” and the popular, “Yapa.” While we can say Ceeza’s relatively new, too, he actually deserves some accolades. What accolade can be more deserving than the Next Rated.

It’s probably a Starboy vs DMW war now, hence a Wizkid vs Davido. So, for die-hard fans of Wiz, it’s Ceeza, and for the fans of Davido, it’s Peruzzi. But for people like me who sitting on the fence, we’ll let the Awards decide. NEA don fuck up, let’s just hope The Headies will come through!
