The Ghana Football Association has officially ushered in a new era for the Black Stars, confirming the appointment of experienced Portuguese manager Carlos Queiroz as the team’s new head coach with immediate effect.

Ghana FA Appoints Carlos Queiroz as New Coach

It’s a decisive move from Ghana’s football authorities, coming at a time when the national team is under pressure to reset and rebuild ahead of major international challenges. Queiroz steps in to replace Otto Addo, who has been relieved of his duties following a difficult run of results that saw the team struggle in recent months.

The turning point came after a string of disappointing performances, most notably Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, alongside a broader pattern of losses that ultimately forced the federation’s hand.

Now, the focus shifts to Queiroz, a coach with a long résumé at the elite international level, having previously managed national teams such as Portugal, Iran, and Egypt.

He is widely known for his structured, defensively disciplined approach and his ability to organise teams quickly under pressure.

For Ghana, the timing of the appointment says it all. With preparations already building toward the FIFA World Cup 2026, the expectation is that Queiroz will bring immediate stability, clear tactical identity, and renewed confidence to the squad.

The challenge ahead is already mapped out. The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama—a group that promises intensity, experience, and no room for early mistakes.

For Ghana, this isn’t just another coaching change. It’s a reset button pressed with urgency, and all eyes will now be on Queiroz to see how quickly he can turn a struggling side into a competitive force again.

The announcement, made on March 31, 2026, has sent shockwaves through Ghanaian football circles.

Ghana Part Ways with Otto Addo Weeks Before 2026 World Cup

Addo’s dismissal comes after a series of disappointing results that raised concerns about the national team’s readiness. The Black Stars recently suffered consecutive defeats in international friendlies, including a heavy 5–1 loss to Austria and a narrow 2–1 defeat to Germany.

Despite a squad brimming with talent and experience, Ghana struggled to maintain consistency on the pitch.

Reports suggest that the failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations added pressure on the technical team, further influencing the federation’s decision. Addo, who was entrusted with rebuilding the team and leading it into a new era, was unable to meet the high expectations set for him.

During his tenure, Addo managed 22 matches, securing eight victories while enduring nine losses. While there were glimpses of potential under his guidance, recurring inconsistencies ultimately left the GFA with little option but to act decisively ahead of the World Cup.

The immediate challenge now lies in appointing a successor capable of steadying the Black Stars. Ghana faces a tough World Cup group featuring heavyweights such as England and Croatia, and choosing a competent replacement is critical in the race for glory.

The Super Eagles secured the ‘Jollof Derby’ bragging rights with a 2-1 victory over the Black Stars on Friday evening at the Grand de Stade Marrakech in Marrakech, Morocco.

Playing their first game since the 2023 AFCON final, the Nigeria national team displayed a strong performance against Ghana.

The match began with a scrappy affair, lacking rhythm or fluency from either side. However, Nigeria gradually increased their work rate, applying high pressure on Ghana and earning a penalty for a handball inside the box after 34 minutes of play. Cyriel Dessers calmly converted the penalty, deceiving goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi and giving Nigeria a 1-0 lead, which they maintained until halftime.

In the second half, Ghana showed greater purpose and threat in their attacking play. However, their momentum suffered a setback in the 56th minute when defender Jerome Opoku received a red card, leaving spectators puzzled as the reason for his dismissal was unclear.

Despite being a player down, Ghana continued to push for an equalizer, but their efforts were thwarted when Ademola Lookman scored Nigeria’s second goal in the 84th minute.

In the dying moments of the game, Ghana managed to pull one back with a goal four minutes into stoppage time as Jordan Ayew calmly converted from the penalty spot. However, the match ended 2-1 in favor of the Super Eagles.

Although facing defeat, the Ghanaian players deserve commendation for their resilience and determination, resulting in a late goal during the closing minutes of the match.

Bright Osayi-Samuel’s late foul resulted in Ghana scoring a goal, denying Nigeria a clean-sheet victory over their rivals, a situation that could have been avoided.

The Super Eagles are scheduled to play Mali in their upcoming friendly on Tuesday, March 26th, while Ghana will face Uganda on the same day.

The 2023 AFCON has been marked by unpredictability and noteworthy moments, with some managers facing the consequences as their teams failed to advance to the knockout stage. This tournament edition stands out for the unusually high number of coaching changes, as several head coaches were relieved of their duties.

Among the notable coaching casualties are Chris Hughton from Ghana, Djamel Belmadi from Algeria, Adel Amrouche from Tanzania, and Jean-Louis Gasset from the host nation, Ivory Coast. Additionally, Tom Saintfiet of Gambia resigned following his team’s group stage exit. The departure of Kadri marks the sixth coaching change in a tournament filled with surprising outcomes.

As the 2023 AFCON transitions into a critical knockout stage, the spotlight remains on these six coaches who saw their tenure come to an end during the group stage matches.

Popular Coaches Who Lost Their Jobs After 2023 AFCON

Chris Hughton

Chris Hughton

Following the elimination of the Black Stars from the group stage of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) took the decision to terminate the contract of head coach Chris Hughton.

Ghana’s campaign in the 2023 AFCON proved to be a letdown as they failed to secure victory in any of their three group stage matches. The Black Stars concluded their Group B fixtures in the third position with two points. Their performances included draws against Egypt and Mozambique, both ending in 2-2 stalemates, and a 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde in the opening match.

Chris Hughton, who assumed the role of head coach in 2023, guided the team to their first competitive appearance at AFCON. Unfortunately, the tournament marked one of Ghana’s poorest showings in AFCON history, a disappointment considering the esteemed legacy of the Black Stars.

Jean-Louis Gasset

Jean-Louis Gasset

The Ivory Coast Football Federation (FIF) took decisive action by dismissing coach Jean-Louis Gasset following the national team’s significant 4-0 defeat to Equatorial Guinea in their final Group A match at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Despite this resounding loss, Ivory Coast managed to secure a third-place finish in Group A with three points from three group stage matches. The team secured advancement to the knockout stage as one of the best four third-placed teams, offering them an opportunity to redeem their campaign.

The 4-0 defeat against Equatorial Guinea marked the heaviest home loss in Ivory Coast’s history. In response to this setback, the Ivory Coast Football Federation appointed Emerse Fae, one of Gasset’s coaching staff, to serve on an interim basis as they navigate the challenges ahead in the tournament.

Djamel Belmadi

Djamel Belmadi

The Algeria Football Federation has decided to part ways with coach Djamel Belmadi following the elimination of the two-time winners from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Algeria’s unexpected 1-0 loss to Mauritania resulted in the 2019 champions finishing at the bottom of Group D.

This disappointing outcome marked Algeria’s second consecutive group stage exit, with their previous elimination occurring in the 2021 finals. Walid Sadi, president of Algeria’s football federation, announced the decision, stating, “I met with Djamel, and we reached an amicable agreement to dissolve the association. We thank Djamel for everything he did for the team and wish him good luck in the rest of his career.”

Djamel Belmadi, 47, had taken charge of the Desert Foxes in August 2018 and had extended his contract just a year ago, committing to remain in the coaching role until 2026.

Jalel Kadri

Jalel Kadri

Jalel Kadri has stepped down from his position as coach of Tunisia in the wake of the team’s unexpected early exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast. Tunisia concluded their campaign at the bottom of Group E with just two points.

Kadri, who had previously guided Tunisia to success in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where they notably defeated France, announced his resignation during a post-match television interview following the 0-0 draw with South Africa. This result confirmed Tunisia’s elimination from the 2023 AFCON.

In his statement, Kadri expressed, “My mission at the head of the Tunisian national team is now over.” Tunisia’s disappointing group stage performance included a surprising opening loss to Namibia and a subsequent draw with Mali, contributing to their bottom-place finish with two points from three games.

Adel Amrouche

Adel Amrouche

The Tanzanian Football Association took the lead in announcing the dismissal of their head coach, who had been handed an 8-match ban by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) due to controversial comments made about Morocco during the 2023 AFCON.

The CAF disciplinary committee had previously suspended Amrouche for eight matches and imposed a $10,000 fine in response to offensive remarks directed at Morocco. The disciplinary action came after officials from the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (RMFF) lodged a complaint with the CAF regarding the comments made by Amrouche.

Tom Saintfiet

Tom Saintfiet, the head coach of the Gambia national team, has resigned from his position following the team’s exit from the group stage of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.

The Gambia began their 2023 AFCON campaign with a challenging 3-0 defeat to defending champions Senegal, followed by a 1-0 loss to fellow West Africans Guinea. The 50-year-old Belgian coach announced his decision after the Gambia’s 3-2 loss to Cameroon in their final Group C game, a defeat that left his team at the bottom of Group C with no points, despite the excitement they brought to the tournament.

Saintfiet, who has coached various African national teams, had been in charge of the Gambia team since 2018. Under his leadership, the Gambia, situated on the west coast of Africa and surrounded by Senegal, achieved its first-ever Africa Cup qualification in 2021, reaching the quarterfinals of that tournament.

In response to his resignation, the Gambia Football Federation expressed gratitude, stating, “Thank you for your service, gaffer. Gambia will indeed miss a great tactician.”

Ghana has decided to part ways with coach Chris Hughton following the team’s group-stage exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The Black Stars finished their campaign in Group B with two points, drawing 2-2 against both Egypt and Mozambique and suffering a 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde in their opening match.

Ghana had slim hopes of progressing as one of the four best-ranked third-placed teams, but those hopes were dashed on Tuesday when other results did not favor them.

Chris Hughton, who took over as Ghana’s head coach in February of the previous year, will no longer continue in the role. The decision to part ways with Hughton comes after the team’s disappointing performance in the AFCON, failing to advance to the knockout stages.

“Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect,” a Ghana Football Association (GFA) statement said., external

“The executive council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars.

“The GFA will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars.”

Former Newcastle United and Brighton boss Chris Hughton took on the role of technical adviser for Ghana, a four-time continental champion, in February 2022. He assumed the managerial position after Otto Addo stepped down following Ghana’s performance in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where the team finished at the bottom of Group H.

Ghana’s recent history in major tournaments includes exiting the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon at the group stage and facing a similar fate in the Ivory Coast tournament.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) initially expressed full support for Hughton after a fan reportedly had a “verbal altercation” with the coach following the team’s defeat to Cape Verde.

Despite Ghana’s promising position in Group B and a 2-0 lead over Mozambique in their final group game, the Black Stars suffered an unexpected setback. Mozambique managed to score twice in second-half stoppage time, securing a draw that eliminated Ghana from the tournament.

Hughton’s tenure also saw a mixed start to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, with Ghana securing a stoppage-time victory against Madagascar but facing a 1-0 defeat in Comoros. The decision to part ways with Hughton comes in the aftermath of these disappointing outcomes in major competitions.

Liverpool fans received an unsettling update as Mohamed Salah spoke out for the first time since sustaining a hamstring injury during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. The incident occurred in Egypt’s 2-2 draw with Ghana, with Salah leaving the field just before halftime.

The Egyptian Football Association confirmed in a statement that while the 31-year-old did experience a hamstring strain, it is not as severe as initially feared. Salah will be sidelined for Egypt’s final group game against Cape Verde and, if they advance, the round-of-16 match. However, he is expected to recover in time for a potential quarter-final clash.

The extent of Salah’s absence depends on Egypt’s performance in the tournament without their captain and star player. The team has drawn both of their games 2-2 so far. A victory against Cape Verde will secure their spot in the knockout stage, but if they fall short, their progression will hinge on the outcome of the Ghana vs. Mozambique match.

Discussing his fitness ahead of the crucial game, Salah told reporters on Sunday: ‘My injury is still there but the most important thing now is to speak about the game.

‘We are very positive, we have great players and a great team, and we just need to fight and see what will happen.’

Egypt have not won the AFCON since 2010, but did reach the final in 2017 and 2021.

Salah added, ‘I would love to win it, absolutely. I have won everything possible but this one not yet.

‘It will happen somehow, that is what I believe, and whatever I believe I achieve, so sooner or later it will happen. Everybody knows what it means to any player to win an Africa Cup.

‘We were unlucky at the last one and also in Gabon. The players are very motivated to win the tournament. We all want to win it.

‘At the end of the day we are not doing great at the moment but we have a fantastic team and a great coach, so we just need to stay focused. I believe that with hard work everything is possible, so we just need to win one game to qualify and we go from there.’

Nigeria, who last hosted the finals of a major international tournament in 2009, which was the Under-17 World Cup, and Benin, would be prepared to convince the CAF officials when inspections begin from January 5 to 25 next year.

The bid to host the 2025 AFCON has reopened a few months ago after initial hosts Guinea was stripped of the hosting rights, with CAF citing the inability of the country to meet the deadline to get facilities ready for the tournament.

The West African nation is currently struggling with political instability following a military junta that ousted former civilian president Alpha Coundé in September 2021.

Meanwhile, Nigeria faces stiff competition from other countries including Zambia, Algeria, Morocco and South Africa, who have all expressed their interest in hosting the finals, with the winner expected to be named in February next year.

The three-time African champions have lost AFCON hosting bids four times in 2010, 2012, 2013, and 2019, but would be looking to overturn the outcome this time around.

Penalty spot kicks in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar have been quite important. The best feeling in football has to be when you score a penalty in a hostile environment when the pressure is unbearable but the ice in your veins tells you that you can do it.

Few players can thrive under pressure and resist playing mind games with opponents or goalkeepers in order to win a decisive penalty for the team.

This World Cup has seen a lot of these situations, and the players that stood up to take the penalty will be remembered. Others who were pressed into action and missed it will be reflecting on their situation.

Here are the top five players who have missed decisive penalties that could have altered the outcome of games:

5. Marquinhos

The PSG defender will have a bad memory of that day because his rebound helped Croatia score an equalizer, and he also missed a crucial penalty that could have kept Brazil in the game. Marquinhos missed the final penalty of the shootout that sealed his nation’s exit from the tournament.

Marquinhos came up to take the fourth penalty with Brazil down 4-2 after the shootout, and if he had made it, it would have kept them in the match. However, the player’s shot struck the bottom right corner bar, agonizingly ruining Brazil’s hopes of winning a fifth World Cup.

Croatia qualified for the tournament’s semi-finals for the second time in a row thanks to the victory. In 2018, they reached the finals before losing to France.

4. Sergio Busquets

He wasted his chance to keep Spain in the game by taking the third penalty rather than the first. Busquets had the chance to boost his nation’s spirits as Morocco had a two-penalty lead. But because of his lack of force in the penalty shootout, Bounou accurately predicted his penalty and denied Spain a spot in the shootout, sending Spain home from the World Cup.

The Barcelona midfielder was one of three players who failed to convert from the spot. After Spain was eliminated from the World Cup on penalties by Morocco, Sergio Busquets lamented a “cruel way to lose.” Busquets was one of three Spaniards to fail from the spot as La Roja crashed out of the competition in the last 16.

3. Robert Lewandowski

When one of the best goalkeepers in the world, Ochoa Mexican, anticipated Lewandowski’s shot and parried away his penalty against Mexico, he was named the best penalty taker in football. Poland advanced to the knockout stage when the match ended in a tie, although if they had won, they would have won the group and avoided playing a strong team in the round of 16.

Everything hinged on Poland’s final match against France, who eliminated them from the competition and allowed Poland to advance on goal differential.

Robert Lewandowski’s world cup penalty miss

Robert Lewandowski missed his first penalty for his country. With 76 goals overall, Poland’s all-time leading scorer has yet to record a World Cup goal.

2. Andre Ayew

Ghana appeared more interested in vengeance than winning the game. But it all started well for Ghana when they were awarded a penalty and Andre Ayew, who was part of the 2010 World Cup when Suarez ruined their hopes by saving a shot with his hands and was given a red card, was given a red card and Uruguay won on penalties.

Ayew seemed to be suffering from a hangover from that match because Rochet saved his penalty. Uruguay took advantage of the break by scoring twice, but neither of them counted because South Korea’s goal in the dying seconds ensured that they would advance to the round of 16.

The outcome of the game would have been radically different if Ayew had successfully converted his penalty.

Andre Ayew’s world cup penalty miss

1. Harry Kane

This was Kane’s most important penalty miss, and it will torment the Three Lions captain for months to come because his penalty would have kept England in the game.

Mason Mount of Chelsea was pushed into the box immediately after coming on as France had a 2-1 lead. Nevertheless, the referee disregarded the decision. Referee Wilton Pereira indicated toward the penalty area when VAR requested another review, and it was a well-deserving penalty.

England were one penalty away from tying the game in the 82nd minute. Kane, who had scored the previous penalty, took the risk and appeared at ease. However, it appeared like Kane had capitulated under pressure and skied his penalty, resulting in jubilation from France’s fans and players as England was unable to find an equalizer and were knocked from the competition.

Luis Suarez has refused to apologize for his handball against Ghana in 2010, claiming that it was not his responsibility that the resulting penalty was missed.

In Suarez’s career thus far, the quarterfinal match between Uruguay and Ghana at the 2010 World Cup was one of many contentious occasions.

Ghana had the possibility to become the first African team to ever make it to the tournament’s final four, and because it was the first time the tournament had ever been held in Africa, the entire continent was rooting for them.

When the ball was headed past Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera with the scores tied at 1-1 in the final minute of extra time, it appeared as though the fairytale would come true.

However, Suarez was behind Muslera and deflected the ball with his hand.

He was sent off and Ghana had the chance to claim victory from the spot, but Asamoah Gyan fired his penalty against the bar. In the shoot-out that followed, Uruguay prevailed.
